Ashley Tisdale Shares About High School Musical 3

Currently working on High School Musical 3, Ashley Tisdale has had her hands full with various projects, including producing a second album. She spoke to TVGuide.com about High School Musical, her previous television experiences, and her campaign with Degree Girl deodorant. Here are some of the highlights of the interview:

On High School Musical and her scariest and most exhilirating moments. “I think every single moment with High School Musical was nerve-racking and exciting as well. It was a whole snowball effect, starting with the ratings themselves, and then going into the Billboard charts and getting a Billboard Award for the No. 1 album of the year. Every single moment of High School Musical was an OMG moment. It’s been a crazy ride.”

On what we can expect from her character in High School Musical 3. “I don’t know much, because I haven’t read the script yet! But I have recorded the songs, so I do know a little bit about it. It is senior year, so there’s going to be graduation and prom, but I can’t spill much else.”

On the songs and music of High School Musical 3. “All the music is great. They’re much bigger productions this time — they’re huge — so it’s going to be really exciting.”

In an Extra interview, Ashley also commented on possible cameos. “I would love for Johnny Depp to be in it. He did say in an interview that his kids love High School Musical and he wouldn’t mind doing a cameo. We should really jump on that one.”

I understand what you’re saying but at this moment in Hollywood I doubt that they will be offered anything but teenage roles. When you look at most movies the teenagers are played by people in their 20’s because there are laws about what teens under seventeen are allowed to do. I’m sure all the cast will have success after HSM but you have to understand that they will probally take roles that you see as not making progress because as I stated before there are thousands of actor vying for the same roles. A working actor will sometimes have to take a lesser role.Once they have achieved universal fame then they can pick and choose roles.

Yes, tee, I agree with you. Considering the age of this gang I would see them working in some movies where they will be playing younger characters. When John Travolta and Olilvia Newton-John did Grease they were WAY past the age of High School kids yet they were playing a role for that age group. Looking back at the movie now—-even though it is a great movie—I laugh in comparing it to HSM. In some cases things are a little more realistic now in movies. LOL

Yep I agree teenage roles is what the HSM cast will most likely be playing (minus maybe Monique, considering she is a few years older) BUT what I’m saying is that you can take a challenging teenage role. For instance, Vanessa’s role as Sa5m - who is a teenager in high school - but she has a stutter, which means the role will be challenging and will prove her acting ability, much more so than the character of Gabriella.

People like Ashley have been able to prove themself more, as Karen said, because playing the mean girl has more depth to it than simply playing an average teenage girl, who is nice to people - which is what the majority of teenage girls are.

LOVE HER!

#32 So you know Zac personally do you? You know for a fact that this is all about the money for him? That he feels no gratitude towards the fanbase that paved the way for all the opportunities he’s recieved? If the answer to any or all of these questions is “No” then I respectfully suggest that you refrain from “telling” us anything.

I have to say I question this $3 million business. This movie is budget at $13 million and I calculated one time that if you take away Zac’s $3 million dollar paycheck that leaves $10 million dollars then figure in the raises for Vanessa and Ashley and I’m sure for Corbin, Lucas, Monique and the rest of the Wildcats, what with is a budget that completely went to paying the cast. With virtually nothing left over for the other expenses that go into moviemaking. So as I say I really question that figure.

Also I’m tired of this “riding his coat tails” nonsense. All of the Wildcats have done their own thing since the first movie and have met with some successon on their OWN. Nobody is riding anybody’s coat tails. NOBODY.

Anyway to bring this back to Ashley since she’s the subject this thread I found the interview interesting. She seems to be really gounded and has a good head on her shoulders. Like Malia I found it curious that we’re just weeks from the start of filming and she hasn’t the script yet. That was probably just a way to avoid answering any detailed follow-up questions.

I so agree with you both, karen and Tee.

About Vanessa, I must be one of the few that think she did a fantastic job with Gabriella. The character itself along with Taylor and other characters were not well developed by Disney. I blame them squarely for that, however, Vanessa gave that character essence and personality. When I started respecting her as an actress was when I got to know more about her and discovered how different her real personality is from Gabriella. She is quite outgoing, very confident and self-contained with a flash of sass and spontaneity. Yet she was so able to portary Gabriella with such subtle acting that kids all over the world fell in love with the character, just check how many fanfictions her character has inspired. Gabriella is not Vanessa and is not Sharpay. She is a distinct character that was so well portaryed that people are still struggling to differentiate the character fron the actress. Where I come from, it’s called talent with a capital T!

I have heard people say the character is boring. Depending on your personality, you find her boring because ordinarily you wouldn’t hang out with someone like gabriella in high school, so the fact that you find her boring points to how well Vanessa has portrayed gabriella as the bookish, boring, shy wallflower which Vanessa is definitely not. On the other hand, those that love the character are those that ordinarily would hang out with that kind of person or identify with her. Which ever way you look at it, with subtle acting (which is harder to pull off as it does not involve drama or over the top acting), Vanessa has managed to bring a scripted character to life. Whether you hate Gabriella or love her, you are responding to a personality that can be recognised in high schools across the world thanks to Vanessa.

Sorry, I had to do a ;ittle rant here. In my days acting skills didn’t have to do with what type of character you were given, it had to do with how well you became that character on screen that the audience only sees the character and not the actor/actress and responds to the character.

The real difference between actors of the past and now is that now there are so many of them and unfortunately they are a dime adozen. The only ones who will truly survive are those with real talent and ability to take it to the next level. Time will tell who of this gang are really talented enough to make it in the grown-up world where celebrity does not equate with talent.

Karen as a John Travolta fan, you need to get your facts straight. He has had enormous success in many roles and chose to remove himself from Hollywood and only do role he deemed challenging and appropriate. That’s what REAL stars have the liberty to do. I believe his passion for his family and the three jets he has parked in his back yard qualify him as a huge success……..I’m just saying.

Okay…for the last time…

Vanessa is my favourite out of the whole HSM cast and I DO think she’s a good actress. I DO think she plays the role of Gabriella as well as the role could be played but what I’m saying is is that the role isn’t as challenging as the role of Sharpay, or the role of Sa5m in Vanessa’s new film - Will.

Because she is my favourite out of the cast, I obviously want her to get recognised for her abilities and talent and for this to happen, I feel that she needs to take on more challenging roles than Gabriella - who, whilst she does play well - is not the most complex character around. I’m proud of Vanessa for taking the role of Sa5m as I feel this is a role that:

1. Will be hard to play
2. Seems a lot more complex as a character
3. Will break Vanessa’s image from the whole giggly, innocent girl characters which if she’s not careful, she could be stuck with just like Ashley could get stuck with the mean girl roles.

I’m not saying there’s anything WRONG with these roles, I’m just saying in order to prove herself as the talented actress we all know she is, she may need to break away from them once in a while which she IS doing. I’m not critising her at all - I’m a huge fan and as I said, I’m proud of her for taking the role of Sa5m.

Naomi
I agree with you, I think that she did a fantatsic job s Gabi, actually, I think she’ve done a fantastic job in every movie/project she have done, she have already proven that she can poytrait characters that are funny, serious, smart, kind, girly, heck, she even did a lot of cool stunts in ‘Thunderbirds’ so she can do that as well.
I also and espcaually find it funny how many bash her and call her bad names and then say that she doesn’t have any talents, I mean, Gabriella is far from any of those words they call her, so why do they claim that she can’t act?

Billie
I think that what Karen, and I, meant when we mentioned John Travolta is that it took him a while to step out of the ‘hot guy’ roles and take on more grown-up roles, that’s it, and that he’s a great example, along with like Leo DiCaprio that it’s possible but it’s hard and it’s easy to give up, and we’re not implaying that he didn’t do other roles, I just meant that with ‘Pulp Fiction’ he played a new kind of role that was so far away from the characters we’re used to see him play.

#57 Actually Karen’s right about John Travalota has slipped under the radar more then once in his career. This of course was before his marriage to Kelly Preston and the three jets. He was superhot post “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever” then he hit a real dry spell in the mid-eighties. This continued until 1989 when he landed “Look Who’s Talking” which was followed by two lackluster sequels and he looked like he was headed back toward washed up hunk territory.

Then Quentin Tarantino cast him in “Pulp Fiction” which landed him an Oscar nomination and he’s been smart (with a few exceptions like any actor he’s made some questionable choices like “Battleground: Earth” and “The Punisher”) and working steady over the past 14 years since that movie came out. But is not untrue or unfair to say he’s had his share of peaks and valleys in his career, he would be the first to admit it.

True words, erica.

Laura, I’m actually not referring to you at all. Those have been simmering for a while so I needed to let it out.

I agree with you about her need to take other roles which she has done with Sa5m which is great. I don’t really mind whatelse she does as she appears to have a good though limited track record in the diversity of roles she picks. I just want her to leave Disney, period. I don’t watch so I’m not speaking with authority here, however it comes cross to me as if they are very stereotyped in there characters and particularly, the time of actors/actresses they like to promote. In my personal opinion, Vanessa’s personality does not suit Disney. I’m extremely happy that they are not really into her and she is not really into them either. the sooner they part ways, the better for all concerned especially her.

#57–billie:

I did have my facts straight before posting what I did about John Travolta. I happen to be John’s age and I watched him and loved him on Welcome Back Kotter. I watched his career from day one so I know exactly what he did and didn’t do. And I said I commend him for what he accomplished. Because as Troy said he has has more than one peak and valley. I never once said he was not a success. But I wanted to point out that any actor who is a hottie and makes a few blunders in movie choices can be quickly forgotten for the next hottie of the hour. But he came back after it looked like his time in the limelight had dimmed and that is when he got his jets, etc.

Thanks, Troy and erica.

Oh okay Naomi. Because you were discussing the subject that I was also, I thought you were. No problem there then. :)

Yeyyyyy, HSM rocks n so does Ashley.

Hi, everyone! I’ve enjoyed reading all your posts; nice debating going on!! I agree with many of you, especially Naomi, Troy, and Karen. I think many of these actors are going to have very nice careers, if they are smart and choose well. For those of you who think they have no talent, well, think again. As someone mentioned before, these actors were chosen from a HUGE pool of talented kids for a reason!! How anyone can say they don’t have talent is just beyond me!!

I also wonder how long ago this “interview” was, since Ashley had not read the script. Could it be Jared is just trying to keep us HSM fans happy, since there probably won’t be much news for awhile???

tinseltown @ 04/03/2008 at 4:56 pm

i love hsm, i love zanessa, i would love a famous and hot actor like johnny depp participating in this excellent movie

billie I sorry to disillusion you but John Travoltra has said in many interviews that for years he couldn’t get roles in Hollywood because he was typed casted as a pretty boy. He was grateful that Quentin Tarantino cast in in “Pulp Fiction” because that gave him a chance to come back. He was going out on auditions and not get the roles not sitting back waiting for the perfect one.

I think it may be conceivable that Ashley was aware of what the script was about, had confidence in Kenny Ortega and what had been written for her in the previous two movies, and she also had confidence in the other major actors in the movie and signed without reading the completed final script. I’m sure she knew Zac was reading the script and meeting with Kenny Ortega so maybe she thought if he was OK with the script she would be too. I have heard of many actors saying OK to a role in a movie just knowing who the director will be or who else is going to be in the movie. I know it was reported that Vanessa and Ashley had signed to do this movie quite a while before Zac signed but I also think they knew he was OK with the script and he was probably just ironing out other little details like salary and maybe a percentage of the merchandising that comes with these kinds of movies. Actually, I think all the main 10 characters in this movie should reap a little bit from the merchandising aspect. Disney cetainly made money from the HSM dolls, lunchboxes, etc. And they used these kids faces to do it. I think Zac can be smart and maybe is getting good advice from his “people”.

If some of you think Vanessa does not have talent…look again, out of all the HSM cast, she was the only one that appeared on two big screen movies way before HSM. Thirteen and Thunderbird. Thirteen was nominated for an Oscar. Both of these two movies, Vanessa had major substantial roles. Zac first big screen movie was Hairspray okay. Ashley was on Suite Life of Zack & Cody. I am not sure of Lucas or Corbin. The point is that Vanessa has experience on big screen movies way before HSM. Zac just started big screen movie after the first HSM. Vanessa auditioned and gotten roles on those two big screen movies are enough proof for her great acting talents.

I hope all the nay-sayer just leave these HSM casts along and let them enjoy their dream and lives. Be happy for them. They are all equally very talented.

I think the whole Johnny Depp thing was just a joke on his part. He did an interview on “Entertainment Tonight” promoting “Sweeney Todd” and the question was asked if he would do another musical and he said he knew they were going to make “HSM3″ and maybe he could pop up as somebody’s grandfather.

Plus he’s in the middle of filming “Public Enemies” directed by Michael Mann in which he’s playing John Dillenger so I think he’s a little busy right now. But still a cameo would be cool.
