Thomas Beatie and his wife Nancy are a happily married couple and are expecting their first child. But it’s the husband, Thomas, who’s pregnant.
Despite having his gender changed from female to male, Thomas, 34, kept his female sex organs intact because he hoped to have a child some day.
“I actually opted not to do anything to my reproductive organs because I wanted to have a child one day. I see pregnancy as a process and it doesn’t define who I am,” Thomas told Oprah. “I feel it’s not a male or female desire to have a child. It’s a human need. I’m a person and I have the right to have a biological child.”

I think this whole issue is a little misleading. Yes he is legally a man…but he was born a woman and still has ovaries, a uterus and a ******. So it’s not really a man having a baby, its a transgendered man (born female) using the equipment he was born with. When I first read the headline, I thought that they somehow managed to implant a uterus/fetus in a guy and administer the necessary hormones that enabled him to maintain a pregnancy to term….that in my eyes would actually be the first pregnant man
I like to think I’m a pretty open person and all, but this one is a challenge. I’m not saying he doesn’t have the right or anything. It’s just something… it’s a really new concept to wrap my brain around. Wow.

You either get to be a man or a woman. If you wanna chop yourself up and become a man, fine, but being a man means you lose that gift of birth. How can you say you feel like a man if you’re not willing to give that up? How selfish is it to bring a child into a family like that and submit it to torture from its peers for the rest of its life.

He said he went public to control the way the story got out. I think since he is working on a book about his life, he may be doing this for the publicity to boost sales. Usually you would think they would protect their privacy for the sake of their children. I admit when I first heard this story, I was curious to know the details and mentally felt it was not humanly possible if he was born a man.

Thanks Sophie. This just angers me. I know people with Gender Identity disorder and it’s clearly a disorder for them. Then I’ve met people at school who are seemingly healthy and making the transition, too. But if you want to claim it isn’t a mental disease you have to be clear about what you feel like. If you really feel like a man, then you shouldn’t be giving vaginal birth.

If you watch the video, it explains it all. He went to 9 different doctors before one decided to help him with this. If I remember correctly I think he said it was In vitro fertilisation. He said that although he knew he wanted to be a man and had his breasts removed, he decided to keep his female organs because he one day wanted a baby. I won’t go in to all detail about what was said but that’s just some of it.

I read about it first in March…..I think the reason they say pregnant man is that legally she became registered as a man once he had all the changes made to his body……..Its weird to wrap your mind around this topic , if a girl feels as though she wants to date women and become a lesbian and have a child its fine, but to go the extra mile and become a man and still wants to become pregnant and have a child….is TWISTED!!! It’s funny, but who cares if they want to have a kid together, we as a society have no problem with single moms, gays adopting or living together so I don’t really see what the problem is. If they want them, let them have them - it’s no skin of your nose what they do with their lives as it doesn’t impede on what you do. What is the common denominator with all homosexuals and transexuals? Each one of them was either abused when they were a child, had no parent/s growing up or lost their parent early on in their life, witnessed abuse, murder, or any other traumatic event in their life. These people are ill and I can’t believe our society just accepts it and doesn’t put money into researching and finding a cure for these poor individuals.
I saw the Oprah show. To answer some questions. He didn’t fully become a man, so I don’t even know if he can even be considered transgender. He had his female breasts removed and started taking testosterone which made the c l itoris grow into a mini p enis. He said that he can have sex with that. I believe he still has a ******. They got a sperm donation and then injected it themselves. So it was artificial insemination and not in vitro because he still has his female reproductive organs.
The testosterone also gave him hair on his face and chest and made the outside body more male. His doctor said he’s been off testosterone for 2 years, so there shouldn’t be any effects on the baby.
Is the end of the world to me. That’s too much.
Well, after this transgender story, I think the ovaries will not be left fertile or intact in the next sexual conversion patient!
Why would a woman who wants to be a man keep her ovaries to become a freak show? I suspect the doctor who performed her/his surgery is not too pleased with what is now occurring!
Actually, I was impressed with the articulation of the “wife’s” daughters by a former marriage but found the mother and her own story as peculiar as the “pregnant husband’s”. As the neighbor said, I can’t wrap my mind around the pregnancy and find myself “sexually dyslexic”. As regards these people, whom I sense are doing it more for publicity and monetary gain than any other reason, I just cannot find the appropriate level of compassion. “He” has been in the process of writing a book since the age of 17 years, known his “wife” for 10 years, they married five years ago, had a miscarriage last year, and now pregnant again (with use of a veterinarian’s turkey baster) and donor sperm! Does “he” still have a ****** to deliver a child or will it be a C-Section baby? IMO this “guy” (along with his “wife”) has planned all this publicity for a very long time along with the “creation” of the book! No way are they making any money off my family!

I, too, was confused and curious when I first heard about this story, but having watched the interview on Oprah, I have a completely new perspective. This is a couple, completely in love, and a person who identifies, acts, speaks completely as a man. Had I not known he was born a woman, I would have never questioned it. Surprisingly, they seem like a very normal family that wanted to expand their family. The wife had a hysterectomy leaving the childbearing to the husband. Before you judge, I suggest you watch the clips. While it is a deviance from the norm, these people are just that, PEOPLE, who are very excited about their new baby. There are much worse situations babies are born into everyday, this baby is going to have two capable parents who wanted her and will love her. What’s so wrong with that?

I think its fine. Its their life. They’re truly in love with each other for who they are, and I don’t feel sorry for the child; he or she will grow up learning that there are no limits to love. Who I do feel sorry for are the people who won’t accept this family.

I am a straight woman and although I wouldn’t choses the lifestyle ( that this couple was born into) for myself… I can respect peoples differences. As a teacher I can honestly say that children need love and guidance and if that is what this couple can give to their child when she is born then she will turn out to be a fine adult. There are many lesbian and gay couples that have adopted children and the child is raised with two moms or two dads. This couple will raise their child with a mom and a dad, and the fact that the dad gave birth will not be the center of their life. The only part of this entire story that bothers me is that they have gone public to make money. It is obviously a way to promote his book and now different magazines will be fighting to be the first to purchase the pictures when the child is born, those pics. will be worth a lot of money! If they wanted less hassle they shouldn’t have gone public.

After watching the show on Oprah, I feel that there is a lot of love between them to be able to raise the child in a healthy way. So many children are born into the world to nasty evil parents, I think this child will have a better life than the children that are born to parents that have no idea what love is all about. I’m happy for them both.

In all fairness, they seem like a loving couple; I have no problem with them having a child. The problem that I have is them exploiting this as a publicity stunt, which is exactly how I see it. The answers to the questions asked in the interview with Oprah really seemed to indicate (to me) that “he” was a lesbian, not a man caught in a woman’s body. He even said that he didn’t feel he was trapped in the wrong body, but that he was more comfortable in men’s clothing, in a more masculine role. So, don’t advertise and exploit the man having a baby thing, and I’m happy with this. You can live your life how you choose, but don’t make money off of a lie and that’s what they’re trying to do by advertising “he’s” having a baby. He’s still a woman, no matter what anyone says.

i’m so glad that there are people still left who have the balls to call a spade a spade. the rediculous farce that these two freaks are parading as a love, acceptance and creation story is by far one of the most disgusting publicity stunts and examples of whoring for money and attention tha i have ever seen. can these two people see past what they want to what their future child might want….or not want? these were probably not even a real consideration to them.
it seems that these days everyone is encouraged now to go along with some sort of anything goes attitude. if you have morals or decency and feel an obligation towards holding up your part as a good example in the world, you are considered uncool and closeminded. it’s neither of those things. what it is is brave, strong and right. every time a member of our society deviates from the path (and that path is pretty wide these days), more chaos is created. this world is not in need of more chaos. all these little “shocking” things do have an effect down the road. it’s called the collapse of civilization. have any of you heard of the fall of rome for god’s sake? only a complete simpleton can’t see that big picture for what it was and relate it to the present. i’m a pregnant woman and i will be honest in saying that my husband and i are very concerned about how we will shelter our child from what this world is becoming. hopefully, the example we set in our home and the examples set by those we interact with will be enough of a support to help our child grow straight and not bend to allow these negative examples color their life.

bejeebus, I think yours is a very brave and accurate statement and I agree with you totally. I am trying to have a very open mind about them having a child at all, and within the context of having a loving family life, I have no problem with it. But in all of the surrounding hype, etc… I really do agree with you. This has nothing to do with love, diversity or tolerance; it has to do with exploitation, decadance and self-absorption, egotism. Unfortunately, they have made this child and their family a side issue. The bigger issue is their ego’s and how far they are willing to go to exploit the miracle of birth and family, to make money and find their moment of fame.
I find the whole thing quite distrubing!!! SHE is not a man, apparently SHE started the change, masectomy, male hormones treatment, but never completely finished the change. Technically, SHE”S still a WOMAN. SHE still has HER FEMALE reproductive organ, if SHE was really serious about being a man, there would have been a hysterectomy. This is not a MAN having a baby!!!
I am usually a very tolerant person but in this case, they both seem like freaks who want attention. They could have very well went through the pregnancy without media attention. She could have shaved and no one really would have given her second look. If she is having gender related issues, the doctor who gave them the invitro treatments should have his licensed taken away. I´m sorry, but this is quite disturbing.
First off, he was injected with sperm from a doner. Now i dont agree with the fact that he is giving birth, simply because he is a man now, well i should say mentally a man now, but none of us should judge because we never know what we would do if we were in his shoes. Yes they are going to go through obstacles as the child grows up, but that something they are going to have to deal with, so get off their back, and let them live the way they want to live, you dont have to live it.

I stand by my statement, mean or not. I don’t wish them any harm for being lesbians and having a child. I may or may not have an opinion on that fact. However, I call this exploitation and pure ego, self-centeredness for money. This is a woman having a baby; not a man. I can have plastic surgery to look like a cat and say I’m a cat, but it doesn’t make me a cat. Look at it this way. If this Tracy/Thomas became ill with some medical condition, what do you think she/he would say to emergency facilities trying to help. Do you think he’d say, I’m male and leave it at that. Do you think if all signs pointed to problems in the ovaries or uterus or ******, he’s going to stand on the fact that he’s male, and have a prognosis overlooked. Or do you think when the emergency facilities are there, he’s going to say, it could be my….. because I was female.
Sorry, most people have to be labeled as male or female…. not both. He can sure say I’m male but by medical terms, he’s not male… she’s a female… and since pregnancy is considered medical… I’d say on those terms, it’s a female having a baby.
