The other woman looked like a sexy 60’s woman shaving, a radical avant garde artsy idea back then.
Jessica Simpson looks like a drag queen getting a last minute shave before going onstage.
The art director & photographer should’ve had her re-create the exact pose…Jessica’s version is not flattering. It would have made more sense and worked better for her. This cover is not good.
In the original pic Virna’s eyes are full of mischief and you know she is just fooling around. In the copycat pic,Jessica’s eyes are dead,her expressions, well expressionless and it looks like she is just doing her daily thing,without interest,just a repetion of of what she did yesterday and the day before and the day before.Like,she rolled out of bed from last night’s secret tranny party and now ready to have a clean shave and head to the office .
This is ,in my opinion, the worst thing she has done so far to her ‘Career’(what is it remind me again)

I am tired of the fifties hair. Nostalgia for that period has been over done. Shaving? nothing relevant to today. This is really a sexist shot. in the 50’s and 60’s this was a way to impose a mans world upon a woman. It would have been considered ironic to have a woman trying to do a mans job or wear a mans shirt or pretend to be a man. Not to be cross gender but to try to say they can do the same as a man. Today women work allong men and have no challenges to break the ceiling anymore. I think that this is really nostalgic for an opressed female world. I am a man and a photographer and this does nothing for me. I think Jessica is one of the most beautiful women in the world. Gullible, She should have never agreed with this shot. Jessica doesn’t have to try this hard to get in the public eye and should do more editorial with concepts that revolve around her instead of a magazines poor attempt to get life into thier subscription. Sadly, I think this will boost their sales, but, should be left on the news stand and left for people that have refused to accept the changes that have taken place in our society.

The stylist’s work for Lisi was exact, exciting and exquisite and that work– coupled with an actress who could command attention without the help of the press or signing handbags at department stores –that is why the image is recognizable 44 years after the fact. The work on this up-coming anniversary cover seems almost random: parody at best, all costume at worst. I guess there’s hope that those Dillard handbags might last 50 years!

I agree with a comment below, the artistic valure of the original is fantastic. It’s very nice actually. The actress still looks pretty and is showing the message well.
However, Jessica’s pose makes her look manly. She’s jutting out her jaw and she shouldn’t have removed all of the cream from her cheeks, it makes her look like she has a moustache. If she posed the same way, straight on, trying to look cute and ditzy as always, the picture would probably have been great.
