OlderZac Efron Meets Young Cancer Patient
High School Musical fan Connor Steventon meets star Zac Efron as a special surprise for his birthday on March 1.
Sadly, Connor, 13, died on March 19 after a two-year battle with cancer. His memory will live on with plans to form a charity in his name.
Connor’s mom Tracy Mason shared a little about how Connor got to meet Zac: “About six weeks before his birthday I thought, ‘He is going to be 13, what can I do that’s really special?’ He had everything, didn’t want or need anything and was mad about High School Musical. When I saw on iomtoday (Isle of Man Today) that Zac was coming over I thought we have got to make that happen somehow. Before his birthday he had started to go downhill, sleeping a lot, and I thought we would have a High School Musical party and asked Zac to come and surprise him. [When Zac agreed to come,] Connor’s little eyes nearly fell out of his head.”

One of the hardest thing as a parent is to see your child suffering. I’m truly sorry for your lost. I’m glad you were able to grant Connor one last wish. Zac you are truly an amazing person to bring joy to Connor’s life. I’m sure it meant the world to him for you to visit. Thanks your being you!!

I am happy that the little boy was able to meet somebody he cared so much about. I am sadden by what happened in the end though. Zac is such a wonderful and caring guy who really loves his fans.

Yes, it was very “sweet of Zac” to give this young teen a special memory…… but more importantly, that time he spent with Connor must have been special to him too. I’m sure meeting Connor continues to put life in perspective for Zac, and keep him real, in a business that really isn’t. I’ll bet Zac was as grateful for being able to meet Connor, who battled worse things than paparazzi.

Deepest sympathy to the Conner family in the loss of their son. Zac Efron is a class act who was able to make that one day a happy one for a dying child. Now these are the kind of stories we all love to read about young actors.
I fell silent after reading this. It is always so tragic to hear about young children passing from such an awful disease. But I hope he has found his peace now. Although they most likely would never read this, I wish his family the best of luck and my uttermost genuine condolences. His mother sounds very brave. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost my child like this.

losing a child is the hardest thing a mother/family has to endure, especially a young one who’s been sick for a good amount of time. best of luck to his family and their greiving. but it must be consoling to the mother to know that she granted her son’s biggest wish and he passed in content.

This was not about “Zanessa” this was about Zac taking the time out of his very busy schedule on a day that most likely was his day OFF and bringing joy to a sick kid.

Connor is at a place now where he is at peace and free of pain and suffering. His shortlived life had a purpose in that it has affected and touched the hearts and lives of many.
My condolences to his family who feel the sadness of their loss and may they achieve what they have planned in the aftermath of Connor’s departure.

So late! My heart goes out to Connor’s family. What a brave boy he must have been. These are the kind of lives we would love to see immortalised in fims. I’m sure they treasure the 13 years they had of him.
What I find really sweet about what Zac did is that he did this a month ago not realising Connor’s mum was going to speak to IOM about it. He kept it private. No ’sources’ leaked the info. If she hadn’t mentioned it, nobody would be the wiser about what he did. He didn’t do this as a ‘celeb’. He was just a 20 year old boy going out of his way to give a 13 year old sick boy the birthday of his life. Well done!
Like Go sox mentioned, I’m sure Zac would have learnt a lot about the brevity and preciousness of life from meeting Connor. Hopefully, he’ll maintain that perspective in the illusion that is hollywood.

I worked as an oncology nurse for a long time, and I can tell you, people would always say “how good” I was for working in that field, but let me tell you, it was the patients that taught ME so much. You have no idea the strength and courage they have, and how they know how precious life is. I could never look at life the same way again after caring for cancer patients!

Yes, go sox, I’m sure Zac got much more from that short time being with Connor than Connor got with Zac. Cancer is a terrible thing to have to watch someone die from—but when it is a child there is no words to describe it. My heart goes out to those parents.
