OlderZac Efron Meets Young Cancer Patient
High School Musical fan Connor Steventon meets star Zac Efron as a special surprise for his birthday on March 1.
Sadly, Connor, 13, died on March 19 after a two-year battle with cancer. His memory will live on with plans to form a charity in his name.
Connor’s mom Tracy Mason shared a little about how Connor got to meet Zac: “About six weeks before his birthday I thought, ‘He is going to be 13, what can I do that’s really special?’ He had everything, didn’t want or need anything and was mad about High School Musical. When I saw on iomtoday (Isle of Man Today) that Zac was coming over I thought we have got to make that happen somehow. Before his birthday he had started to go downhill, sleeping a lot, and I thought we would have a High School Musical party and asked Zac to come and surprise him. [When Zac agreed to come,] Connor’s little eyes nearly fell out of his head.”

Lighten up everyone. Connor is in a good place now surrounded by kindred spirits/souls and Angels. Sadness is in those he left behind who feel his absence. There’s always a reason for everything that happens. It is how we make out of it that matters.

So late! My heart goes out to Connor’s family. What a brave boy he must have been. These are the kind of lives we would love to see immortalised in fims. I’m sure they treasure the 13 years they had of him.
What I find really sweet about what Zac did is that he did this a month ago not realising Connor’s mum was going to speak to IOM about it. He kept it private. No ’sources’ leaked the info. If she hadn’t mentioned it, nobody would be the wiser about what he did. He didn’t do this as a ‘celeb’. He was just a 20 year old boy going out of his way to give a 13 year old sick boy the birthday of his life. Well done!
Like Go sox mentioned, I’m sure Zac would have learnt a lot about the brevity and preciousness of life from meeting Connor. Hopefully, he’ll maintain that perspective in the illusion that is hollywood.

I agree with you Naomi, my heart goes out for Connor’s family. I couldn’t begin to imagine the pain of losing a child. That Zac took time out of his schedule to visit without looking for publicity speaks volumes on his character. My thoughts are with the mother and her struggle.

Thanks for the shout-out, Naomi. I worked as an oncology nurse for a long time, and I can tell you, people would always say “how good” I was for working in that field, but let me tell you, it was the patients that taught ME so much. You have no idea the strength and courage they have, and how they know how precious life is. I could never look at life the same way again after caring for cancer patients!
I truly believe Zac learned an awful lot from his young fan!!
Yes, go sox, I’m sure Zac got much more from that short time being with Connor than Connor got with Zac. Cancer is a terrible thing to have to watch someone die from—but when it is a child there is no words to describe it. My heart goes out to those parents.
