No but thank goodness the baby was saved, things happening to babies means someone may not have been watching. My Priests would have never tried that stunt(the balloons), and I do feel bad for animals forced into show business(the bear killed the trainer sad). WTG postman, Eric Clapton’s boy fell out of a window and I am still scarred by it.

The numbers refer to the physical year 2007 for all the tabs except People. People’s numbers are for their fiscal year of July 2006 to June 2007.

SOME CELEB WEEKLIES MISSED RATE BASE IN ‘06 Janice Min

April 23, 2008 — AUDIT reports for the celebrity weekly magazines are in for the calendar year 2006, and the analysis proves that when auditors come knocking, they always find something.

In this case, it was the number of times the magazines missed their rate bases, the amount of circulation a magazine promises advertisers it will deliver each issue.

In Touch and Life & Style missed the mark 11 times, while Star missed 24 times. All three have since lowered their rate bases.

Us Weekly, which is edited by Janice Min, missed its rate base 28 times that year - the most of any of the celebrity magazines. And not too surprisingly, it was the last of the magazines to get its audit completed by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The one exception was People magazine, which showed a squeaky-clean audit report with no missed rate bases. It averaged 3,770,809 between June 2006 and June 2007.

When Us Weekly originally released its so-called “pink sheets,” with un-audited results, the title reported that it expected to show it had missed its rate base 16 times. The audit showed the magazine in fact missed its rate base a dozen more times, for a total of 28, the most of any in the field.

The auditors found that Us Weekly had fallen below the promised rate base by about 5,000 copies a week on average, delivering only 1,745,011 copies a week, instead of the 1.75 million that it promised to deliver.

“It’s an art, not a science,” said Us Weekly Publisher Vicky Rose.

She said Us Weekly every January for the past six years had put through rate-base hikes, the most aggressive of which was a 250,000 boost in 2006.

At the same time that year, Wenner Media boss Jann Wenner had raised Us Weekly’s cover price to $3.49. Price hikes can often lead to a dip in newsstand sales.

“We only missed by 0.3 percent,” said Rose. “Our take was that it was a damn good statement, despite a few more misses than we would have liked.”

Since the rate base is used to set advertising rates, a missed rate base usually forces a magazine to come up with some form of compensation for an ad buyer.

“Advertisers say it’s important, [and] they’ll come back and complain, but in the end, they still buy the ads,” said John Harrington, editor of New Single Copy, a newsletter that tracks newsstand circulation.

How big a problem a missed rate base is often depends on how the original ad buy was set up and the size of the shortfall.

“Each publishing house operates differently,” said Robin Steinberg, senior vice president of print investment at MediaVest, an ad-buying agency. “Some of them will give money back, others will give credit.”

For Us Weekly, one of the misses was huge. The Oct. 9, 2006, issue missed its rate base by 175,549 copies. However, on average, the magazine was off by fewer than 5,000 copies, and some issues exceeded the rate base by hefty margins.

Most of the other weeklies in the category seemed to be safely over their rate base number when the full-year average was considered.

OK!, which is backed by British media mogul Richard Desmond, said in its earlier pink sheet report that it had missed its rate base 15 times in 2006. In reality, it missed 16 times.

However, its rate base at the time was 575,000, even though for the period, OK! was delivering an average of 703,510 copies - a bonus of 128,500 copies a week. It has subsequently raised its rate base to 900,000.

Bauer Publications, which publishes In Touch and Life & Style, acknowledged its rate-base problem in 2007 when wholesalers forced the company to raise its cover price by $1 to $2.99.

Life & Style’s rate base is now at 550,000, while In Touch has rolled its rate-base back to 1 million.

Back in the days when it was still selling for $1.99, In Touch was promising to sell 1.1 million a week, while Life & Style was at 625,000.

In Touch said in its pink sheet it would miss 11 times, and the auditors found that was exactly the number. Life & Style said it would miss the mark nine times; the auditors found it missed 11 times.

“At Life & Style, we missed a few toward the end of the year when we did not have all the scan data back at the time we first reported, but we make every effort to make sure that the numbers are accurate,” said Ian Scott, president of Bauer advertising sales.

Most of the audits cover magazines sold during the calendar year, and are released as auditors complete their analysis. People’s study is an exception, covering the period from June 2006 to June 2007.

However, this latest round of audited results was delayed somewhat because ABC was waiting for some data from the publishers.

It becomes a problem when you live by the water, I live across a lake in our subd. & one time we had to call the animal control to catch the alligator. At NASA in Orlando when we toured the place last year, you can see alligators in the lakes & canals. We have Alligators Farms in St Augustine, our destinations most of the time when we have relatives coming for a visit aside from going to Orlando.
May I added, Floridians are very friendly people, that’s why we decided to settle down here after being stationed all over the world.
I hope to see Brad & Angie going out for dinner minus the kids.

irma my mother in law lives in Fla (Clearwater) I visit sometimes, like anoble I think a mouse is a big deal, it was not a dig against the people of Fla at all but really alligators have a scary reputation, and I hope I don’t ever want to meet one when I visit her smile. You know what - I had forgotten all about that Catherine The Great movie.Angie circled that project for about 2 years. Randall Wallace was writing the script and it never got greenlighted. I think Angie like the script and that’s how he wound up being asked to rewrite AS when she signed onto it.

What’s funny is that I could have sworn “Love And Honor” or something like that was the name of that other movie based on the UN chick that the British tabs did a story on 2 weeks ago. Knowing the tabs - they just saw the title and ASSUMED it was the new Bourne-like series and not the CTG movie.

Yes, it’s finished. Hopefully you’ve read that article I just posted. Perelman finished the script a few weeks ago and now they’re basically waiting for everyone to sign off on the script. They hope to start shooting it in Dec.

Here’s the conclusion of the AS article from BoxOfficemojo.com.

Box Office Mojo: How did you move from Wall Street to Hollywood?

Michael Burns: I came out to L.A. with Shearson Lehman Brothers when I married and I ended up starting this company with a buddy named Max, a left-wing fanatic, which I say lovingly—a brilliant guy—when the Internet was taking off. It was the Hollywood Stock Exchange. It was basically a game that turned into a market research company of sorts with ideas about how independent films can be financed over the Net—which still hasn’t been done—but we thought it was an interesting way to do a lot of great things. As that grew, and we were financed, we started making a few independent movies, so I made such classics as the lesbian comedy But I’m a Cheerleader, and a little movie called Six String Samurai. It was a sensation at Slamdance [Film Festival] that year and then Dancer, Texas, Pop. 81 by Tim McCanlies, who wrote The Iron Giant and Secondhand Lions, and Desert Blue, Morgan J. Freeman’s follow-up to Hurricane Streets and then a movie called The Suburbans—boy, I’d like to have that movie back; I sold it to Sony—it had Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Amy Brenneman, Jennifer Love Hewitt. We had a real simple philosophy, which was [making] little movies on small budgets with recognizable casts and, hopefully, good stories. In 1999, I went on the board at Lionsgate because I’ve had a lot of entertainment banking [experience]. In 2000, I persuaded my old friend Jon Feltheimer to become [Lionsgate chief executive officer (CEO)] and I became vice chairman of Lionsgate, which was a small, tenuous company. We thought there was an opportunity to roll up a bunch of film libraries and make a name in independent film and television scripts.

Box Office Mojo: Have you done well?

Michael Burns: Yes. It’s been a good run.

Box Office Mojo: Did you achieve that result by bringing down debt?

Michael Burns: I think that’s true. Where everybody else wasn’t concerned with interest rates, we hedged out our interest rates and started accumulating cash. Our bet was on content and that there would be all these [entertainment] platforms—we couldn’t even visualize what they were—iPod, Pay-Per-View, Video on Demand, DVD, High-Def[inition] DVD, channels emerging everywhere, it was not betting on a specific platform but knowing that all the platforms would [need] content. That was the plan.

Box Office Mojo: Are you still involved with Hollywood Stock Exchange?

Michael Burns: No. It’s a sad story. We didn’t have the money to keep it going. We sold it to Cantor Fitzgerald, the company [based in the World Trade Center] that was decimated [in the 9/11 Islamic terrorist attack on America]. Just about everybody we were dealing with is dead.

Box Office Mojo: What’s your prognosis for Atlas Shrugged?

Michael Burns: We believe this movie could be something great for the company—and maybe something great for the world.

Box Office Mojo: What do you see as the movie’s theme?

Michael Burns: Think about it: the world’s great minds and great contributors to society—which really are the entrepreneurs—are being taken advantage of—and they are; if you make money, you’re giving up pretty close to half of your income, though the United States is still the greatest country in the world, and Ayn Rand would have said that as well—so, what would happen if these great minds went on strike? Would society move forward? It’s a great [dramatic] scenario, like that P.D. James novel, Children of Men, which is about [what would happen] if, all of sudden, everyone is sterile. Atlas Shrugged is as pertinent today as it’s ever been.

Box Office Mojo: Why should anyone care about the story in today’s times?

Michael Burns: When it comes to altruism, there are a great deal of fatal flaws. It’s like communism—it’s a great concept, but it doesn’t work. If people say, well, communism’s working in China, that’s not communism—that’s communism [mixed with] capitalism in a convenient place and, hopefully, all society benefits. Atlas Shrugged does take exception with altruism, which is dead on, and it says that men shouldn’t live for [the sake of] other men and that they should absolutely reap the rewards for that which society embraces [through] inventions and patents. And if we live in a society where that doesn’t happen, where [businesses] like Rearden Metal are nationalized, like is happening in [the dictatorship of] Venezuela, you take a step backwards and end up with a corrupt regime. That is the greatest threat to free society. Ayn Rand spent a lot of time thinking about apathy—look at low voter turnout—and out of apathy rises a very dangerous situation. I’m a Republican, but how the Democrats could not defeat George Bush [during the 2004 presidential election] is shocking. I would argue that the reason George Bush won reelection is voter apathy—or, something else that Ayn Rand spent a lot of time talking about: fear. [Politicians] use fear to their advantage and that’s what’s happened in society—with devastating consequences. Would Ayn Rand appreciate George [W.] Bush? I think that she would deplore him. His administration is the pinnacle of cronyism, which she deplored. She stood for individualism and that the strong survive not at the expense of anyone else.

Box Office Mojo: When you imagine seeing Atlas Shrugged on screen, what images come to mind?

Michael Burns: I haven’t read the book in a long time but I remember Ragnar throwing [solid] gold bars at Hank Rearden’s feet saying “what are these?” And [Ragnar] says these are all the taxes that were stolen from you—or where Dagny’s sitting in a diner watching the efficiency of this one short order cook as he’s working and it turns out that he’s one of the great minds and it made no sense to her that he didn’t want to run the entire Taggart Transcontinental food service until later on—when she steals the train back—and I also like it when she’s taking the train and she doesn’t tell anyone who she is—and I love the scene with the bracelet [made of Rearden Metal] where [Dagny] swaps out the [bracelet] with his wife—this million dollar diamond bracelet—because Dagny thinks it’s priceless.

Box Office Mojo: Any interesting casting planned?

Michael Burns: We’d love to cast the role of Hank Rearden with a man’s man like Russell Crowe.

Box Office Mojo: Angelina Jolie hasn’t exactly had a box office success and reviews of her performances have been mixed—

Michael Burns: Well, look, if you’re going to play [video game figure] Lara Croft—I mean, I go back to Girl, Interrupted, or other pictures where I can’t take my eyes off her. She’s not only breathtakingly beautiful, she has an intensity and, if I could pick one movie star in the world to play Dagny Taggart, it would be Angelina Jolie, Angelina Jolie and Angelina Jolie. She’s it. I don’t want to speak for her and, like me, I’m sure she doesn’t agree with everything Ayn Rand says, but she’s a student of [Objectivism]. As far as box office, I think that Hollywood’s lost sight of the fact that, if you have a great script or a great story, you’re going to get a really talented filmmaker and a great cast. In this particular case, we have a great book [and] a talented actress, so my belief is that we have the goods. It’s like [with] Crash—Crash was a great story, and that’s the reason people showed up.

Box Office Mojo: Is that your favorite Lionsgate movie?

Michael Burns: I’m partial to it. I’m a big Marc Forster fan and it’s between Monster’s Ball and Crash. We did a movie called Confidence directed by Jamie Foley—it didn’t do any real box office—but it had Eddie Burns, Dustin Hoffman, Rachel Weisz and Andy Garcia and I thought it turned out wonderfully—and I’m so proud of a movie called Akeelah and the Bee, which did only $18 million at the box office. I love that movie.

Box Office Mojo: Did Starbucks drop the marketing ball on Akeelah and the Bee?

Michael Burns: I wouldn’t say they dropped the ball. It was a learning experience. We tried something new. It has unbelievable performances—that Keke Palmer [the actress who portrayed Akeelah] is a revelation—and it has an unbelievable message.

Box Office Mojo: Is it true that Lionsgate held out for casting Palmer?

Michael Burns: Yes, we loved her. You know what it really came down to? She was believable. You believe that girl was going through all of that and we were looking for somebody the audience would root for and, boy, we got it with her. I think she’s going to be a major movie star.

Box Office Mojo: Do you miss Wall Street?

Michael Burns: Wall Street is full of a lot of creative, energetic, smart, fun people and I miss that interaction—in cities such as New York, London and Hong Kong. But I don’t miss the nonstop travel.

Box Office Mojo: Who in Hollywood would you invite to Galt’s Gulch?

Michael Burns: Clint Eastwood for sure, my friend [director] Marc Forster—he’s directing a James Bond movie right now—he’s great human being and Angelina Jolie would already be there because she’s Dagny Taggart.

Curious… people asked this last summer when Angelina was filming Wanted and Brad filmed BAR.

And when Brad was filming TAOJJ and Angelina TGS… well, the concerned were counting the days until Brad ran back to ___ so they didn’t bothered being ‘concerned’ about their schedules.

Oops… I forgot about the fact that Angelina was working on both TGS and Beowulf within the same time period. I assume that because she talked about working on both projects while she was pregnant with Shiloh.

Fighter starts on September. Brad is a support role. It won’t take too long for him to shoot his part. I say at most 2 months. So it fits Angie’s schedule perfect.

#261: But Catherine the Great doesn’t seem to have a lot of scenes in the movie although she is one of the prinicipal characters. The story is about the mercenary, Kieran Selkirk set against the wilderness and the Royal court in Russia. He probably has affairs with the different woman there. It’s the story about his adventures.

The first really big name to be associated with Michigan’s new filmmaker tax incentive is none other than Dirty Harry and The Man With No Name himself: Clint Eastwood.

The Web site for a Minnesota TV station reports that Eastwood declined to shoot his new movie, set in a small Minnesota town, in the state, instead choosing Michigan as the site for his as-yet-unidentified $20 million film.

Janet Lockwood, head of the Michigan Film Office, said she could neither confirm nor deny such news.

If this is true, it leaves us wondering where he’ll be shooting, and what film it could be. Eastwood’s upcoming directorial docket includes:

“Gran Torino,” rumored to be the next “Dirty Harry” picture, and due for a Dec. release.

“Changeling,” a lost-child drama starring Angelina Jolie — but that’s already in post-production for a Nov. release.

“The Human Factor,” a Nelson Mandela biopic starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon.

You’re right, PT, that is one heck of a funny comment. I used to really like Drew in her Wedding Singer movie, and was kind of rooting for her (I admire how she was able to overcome a wild past, much wilder than Angie’s and became a success), but I hate that even with her own production company, she is just shooting one sh!!tty romcom after another. I have had enough of the flops Lucky You (only watched it for Eric Bana, and couldn’t even finish the movie) and Music and Lyrics. At least Sandra Bullock tries with different kinds of movies (Premonition and Lake House).

I can imagine Echo films going the Drew B way, romcom after romcom. I would even root from Goree Girls if only to have the X move away from the romcom genre, she is getting too old for that cutesy boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl finally crap.

I was going to diss Megan Fox for topping the list, but why bother? At least with Angelina, she was unique in terms of looks, attitude, and charisma. The hairstyles alone…

And Megan Fox… she’s a brunette. She got rid of the awful bump on the bridge of her nose (if anyone watched Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, you’ll know what I’m talking about) and probably had some lip work done.

Angelina Jolie has two good reasons to come to Cannes next month.

And maybe three. Or four.

Her animated film, “Kung Fu Panda,” from Paramount, will be premiering at the film festival. Now it’s been announced that Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling,” a 1920s-period mystery about a missing child that stars Jolie, her “Beowulf” co-star John Malkovich, Amy Ryan and Colm Feore, will be part of the competition slate.

This lends further credence to the rumors that Brad Pitt and Angelina — and their expanding brood — will be relocating to France for the impending birth of their twins, perhaps to a spiffy castle/chateau in the South of France they may have just purchased. Buzz is it’s the most expensive home they’ve yet acquired.

Another reason to do Cannes: to do good! Surely Angelina won’t want to miss Madonna at the big AIDS awareness event at Cannes. Their combined star wattage could make the amFAR fund-raiser on May 22 the biggest ever. And there’s also another fund-raiser screening of Madonna’s documentary film on Malawi AIDS orphans — “I Am Because You Are” — the night before.

However, although Angie was with Brad at Cannes last year for “A Mighty Heart” and “Ocean’s 13,” she didn’t show at amFAR. Will she change her mind this year? Or is there a rift? Are Angie and Madonna — both mega-active in helping children — sort of in competition, what with Madonna adopting her very own African orphan? Hey, it could be the A-list activist version of wearing the same dress to a party. Just saying…

However, there are also rumblings that Jolie is experiencing gestational diabetes. So health issues could keep her off the carpets, away from fund-raisers and at home in their new Franco-digs. Angie looked about four months along — or more — at the SAG awards in late January. So she could actually be due in June or July!

How to Manifest Brad Pitt into Your Life…or Restaurant image

One of my cousins claimed that I may just have “the shining” with all the manifestations going on around me.

She reminded me that we were just talking about Anne Northrup and her sister on Sunday, and then I see her and her bumper-stickered car the very next morning. And there was my I Love This Story post…and then, I remembered one of my favorite manifestations of all…BRAD effing PITT.

So a year ago, I was in New Orleans for work, just like Brad Pitt (if think about Brad as often as I do, you gotta check out http://www.PittWatch.com). He and Ange and the kids were living there while he filmed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The week or so before I left, the women in my office and I tracked every picture we could find of Brad and Ange walking around New Orleans or hanging out on their second story deck/patio. For sure, I was going to be able to spot where they lived while I was there.

My plan was to walk in the mornings and evenings, zig-zagging through the French Quarter keeping an eye out for a well kept second story spread. I was fully prepared to run into to the happily un-married couple wearing sunglasses and Gap-like clothing, only more expensive. I imagined running into them at full-speed-walking mode. Maybe act a bit started, like their Peg Perego double-stroller nearly took me out. And then I’d notice the children and comment how beautiful they were, say something like, “I’ve got a three year old at home who falls asleep everytime I put her in a stroller.”

And then I’d be all, “Wait a second, I’m sorry, I totally didn’t realize who you guys were.” Smooth, right? Then I’d be polite and try to let them be, “Well, it’s pleasure meeting you, I’m a huge fan.” But before I could leave them to their peace, Angie would ask what my daughter’s name was and I’d have to tell the story about how she’s named after a motorcycle and then Brad would laugh and say something about how Angie loves motorcycles and then they’d ask if I’d like to get coffee with them since they were heading that way and we’d still be exchanging emails today. But, it didn’t exactly go down like that.

Instead…

It was the last night of my stay in New Orleans and there was a really nice restaurant behind my hotel on Tchoupitoulas Street. The wait for a table was going to be awhile and since I was a party of one, it seemed more appropriate to take a table by the bar, which also happened to be by the hostess stand and entrance. I ordered a beet salad, something I never would have ordered normally, but the waiter claimed it wasn’t going to be what I expected and that I’d love it (he was wrong, it was exactly what I expected). While picking at my beet salad, this guy came in to the restaurant and asked for the owner. Can you imagine what a director’s assistant might look like? Baseball cap, khaki shorts, clipboard-that’s what this guy looked like.

They had a brief conversation and then the guy left. The restaurant owner turned to tell the hostesses something. It appeared that he had just told her she won $1M. Within seconds, there was a buzz throughout the bar staff and dining room servers who kept coming in to talk to the hostess. Something was happening and it was big. Big enough to make up for my beet salad.

Finally, the hostess came over to ask if she could get me anything and I asked her what the big scoop was.

“They’re filming a scene for Brad Pitt’s new movie right outside on the street here and they may have to come in the restaurant for it,” she told me.

“Brad may have to come in here?” I asked.

“I don’t know, but I get the feeling he may.”

Holy ****! I was going to see Brad Pitt up close and at the hostess stand…maybe. Or what if they didn’t come in the restaurant and just did all the filming from the outside. I had finished my beet salad and was trying to decide on getting a full course, dessert, or just going outside. I really did want a dessert, this was one of those places that you knew had yummy, yummy desserts. Then the owner made an announcement to the dining room that in 45 minutes, they were going to have to close the front entrance for about an hour. Anyone wanting to leave the restaurant was going to have to leave from a different entrance.

I was a mess, should I go out and see if I could find him outside or stay put and see if he actually came in. I ordered a dessert as chocolate always helps me with such major decisions. In the end, I decided to take my chances on the outside of the restaurant.

By the time I made it outdoors, a crowd had started gathering to watch the filming. I joined them to see all that went in to setting up a shot…a shot that would eventually be all of five minutes of filming. And then, there he was. So handsome, so utterly cool, so Brad Pitt…and taller than I expected. I watched as he spoke to the director, did a chest bump with one of the assistant-like people who was running around with a bullhorn, telling people where to go.

And then, I watched them set up the beginning of the scene…inside the restaurant. Take, after take, after take, Brad Pitt started the scene by walking out of the restaurant to the street curb to flag a pretend cab. My table in that very restaurant had been less than five feet from that entrance door. I would have been able to see how his shoes were laced if I’d have stayed put (not that I would have been looking at his feet, but you get the idea).

And so, I manifested Brad Pitt right to my dining table, but was too anxious to stay put. There was a real lesson in that night for me. When in doubt, stay put. Don’t move, don’t make any sudden decisions. Stay where you are and you will get what you want.

STRACZYNSKI’S THE CHANGELING TAPPED FOR CANNES

When he’s not busy on The Twelve for Marvel, or his other, upcoming (and yet unnamed) comics project, J. Michael Straczynski is still a busy screenwriter. For those of you who’ve been following the progress of JMS’ The Changeling, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Angelina Jolie, the picture received a true accolade when it was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Variety named it and Steven Soderbergh’s two film biography of Che Guevara as “potential standouts.”

The Changeling is a thriller, in which Angelina Jolie is a mother who prays for the return of her kidnapped son. When her prayers are answered, however, she begins to suspect the boy who comes back is not her child - this according to Straczynskni Project Watch.

“It’s a huge deal since only a handful of films from around the world are invited to compete, it’s a great indicator of quality just to be included,” Straczynski told Newsarama. “It’s right up there with the Oscars. And yeah, I’ll definitely be there.”

The film, which will be released by Universal domestically in November, will be Eastwood’s fifth for consideration at Cannes.

Angelina is a 33 year old oscar winner and she’s pregnant with her 5th child she doesn’t need to be competing with the up and comers for any sexy list. she’s already made it in Hollywood .

looking at this picture reminds me how blessed she is now. i always comment on how hot brad is but really this time i am not talking about how he looks. the real measure of a man is if he is there as a father and a partner. billy bob wasn’t or didn’t want to be a father in that relationship. brad seems to be a wonderful father and partner and angelina knows she has a wonderful man.
