OlderJamie Lee Curtis: I Wish Miley’s Parents Protected Her
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who recently herself got into some controversy for posing “topless” for AARP magazine, weighs in on Miley Cyrus’s semi-topless scandal with Vanity Fair. Here’s an excerpt from her opinion piece:
When these young people get all dressed up for award show red-carpet events don’t we all comment how beautiful, stunning and grown-up they look in their strapless/backless dresses and heels and tousled hair? None of this is new. None of this should be news. But it is news because it is a business. It is all Business. It is called Show Business. Show Abyss-ness! I call it Show-OFF Business. You throw a child onto the jaws of a business and they will get eaten.
I know how Miley feels. I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless “scandal” and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat. I only wish that her guardians had protected her.

Everybody’s making such a big deal over nothing. The photos are hardly s l u t t y. How is a photograph that shows your back make you a s l u t? I’m 15 and if I got asked to take a photograph like this I would do it. It’s a fashion/art photograph not a photograph for Playboy (which this photo would not qualify for anyway, because it’s not trashy).
I know a girl who lives in my neighborhood who just turned 16 and posed topless for Australian Vogue and is now signed to the Viva Paris agency (where Agyness Deyn and everybody is signed to). It’s hardly a s l u t t y career move, it’s a wise career move. Her parents don’t care and why would they? She’s going to go on and make heaps of money and be very successful (she has been in Vogue Paris now too). If Miley wants to move away from her kiddy fan base and start aiming towards older teenagers, then more power to her. She can hardly be a Disney star forever.

Anyone who would let their child take such erotic photos is seriously messed up. I don’t hold Miley as accountable as I do her dad. And where is her mother with all this? You would think she would’ve at least stepped in.
I think the problem is less about how old she is, and the degree of “skankiness” of the pictures, but more about her reputation and how Disney will handle this. Disney is supposed to be promoting a “wholesome” image for tweens under the age of 13. The last thing they want is a nude scandal with the currently most popular star - Miley Cyrus. I doubt they’ll drop her, however, since I’ve noticed that Disney almost always chooses money over reputation. I mean, don’t we have Vanessa Anne Hudgens for an example?

I think the New York Post has no right to blow this out of preportion nobody made a big deal when Lindsay posed COMPLETELY NUDE (Take it she is older but still a child actor) and now Miley has a satin sheet pressed against her chest and it’s the end of the world. In the long run this picture is beautiful and Miley should respect that she has the ability to take such beautiful photos. Those of you saying she’s not showing too much skin so it’s not a big deal, are really ignorant. It’s not a matter of how much skin she’s showing, it’s how suggestive the pictures are. You can take nude photos and not be suggestive. Yes, Miley could’ve said no, but the parents are just despicable for allowing pictures like this to be taken of their 15 year old child.
What is the big deal? We are going through extremely high gas prices, over priced groceries, a war, etc… are you kiddin me? Why are we even giving this attention? I never imagined I’d be discussing Miley Cyrus. I must admit I only recently realized that Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana were the same person after hearing about someone wanting to hijack an airplane and fly it into a Hannah Montana concert. But I digress. I do feel the need to weigh in on this “controversy”.
Hannah Montana is product of Disney. Miley Cyrus is 15 going 16. People have a problem differentiated these two facts. So when Hannah Montana exhibits sexuality, people feel like their brand loyalty has been compromised. When Miley Cyrus exhibits her sexuality a nation’s anxiety about teenage sexuality is exposed.
This brings back memories of Britney Spears’ vow of virginity because she (or her creators) knew it would ruin her image. Next thing you know she’s marrying every man she has sex with, exposing her crotch, shaving her head, being put in a mental institution, and having her children taken away from her. I’m not suggesting one equals the other, but when people don’t let someone grow up, they don’t.
