OlderJamie Lee Curtis: I Wish Miley’s Parents Protected Her
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who recently herself got into some controversy for posing “topless” for AARP magazine, weighs in on Miley Cyrus’s semi-topless scandal with Vanity Fair. Here’s an excerpt from her opinion piece:
When these young people get all dressed up for award show red-carpet events don’t we all comment how beautiful, stunning and grown-up they look in their strapless/backless dresses and heels and tousled hair? None of this is new. None of this should be news. But it is news because it is a business. It is all Business. It is called Show Business. Show Abyss-ness! I call it Show-OFF Business. You throw a child onto the jaws of a business and they will get eaten.
I know how Miley feels. I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless “scandal” and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat. I only wish that her guardians had protected her.

Everybody’s making such a big deal over nothing. The photos are hardly s l u t t y. How is a photograph that shows your back make you a s l u t? I’m 15 and if I got asked to take a photograph like this I would do it. It’s a fashion/art photograph not a photograph for Playboy (which this photo would not qualify for anyway, because it’s not trashy).
I know a girl who lives in my neighborhood who just turned 16 and posed topless for Australian Vogue and is now signed to the Viva Paris agency (where Agyness Deyn and everybody is signed to). It’s hardly a s l u t t y career move, it’s a wise career move. Her parents don’t care and why would they? She’s going to go on and make heaps of money and be very successful (she has been in Vogue Paris now too). If Miley wants to move away from her kiddy fan base and start aiming towards older teenagers, then more power to her. She can hardly be a Disney star forever.
I don’t know why everybody keeps going on about being a little girl when you are 15. You are hardly a little girl anymore. Where I live you can drive at 15 and get married at 16. That’s hardly a child. These photographs are art and if you can’t understand that and have to try and make something sick out of it, you should question what is wrong with yourself.

TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SAYING THEY’RE NOT THAT BAD: Its not about how much skin is showing, its about what these pictures imply and about how suggestive they are. Anyone who would let their child take such erotic photos is seriously messed up. I don’t hold Miley as accountable as I do her dad. And where is her mother with all this? You would think she would’ve at least stepped in.
I think the problem is less about how old she is, and the degree of “skankiness” of the pictures, but more about her reputation and how Disney will handle this. Disney is supposed to be promoting a “wholesome” image for tweens under the age of 13. The last thing they want is a nude scandal with the currently most popular star - Miley Cyrus. I doubt they’ll drop her, however, since I’ve noticed that Disney almost always chooses money over reputation. I mean, don’t we have Vanessa Anne Hudgens for an example?

It’s weird I think what she is trying to do is move out of the tween disney aira and she wants to be more grown up and look sexy, but she just turned 15, she wants to shake off her cutsey disney image and she wants an older audience to. This is lame. She wants to be more serious and cool but she is not she is generic just like Vannessa huegens and Ashley tisdale, they will be typecasted as high schoolers for the rest of their lives.
If she wants to seem older and more sophisticated, she should get an education and travel and learn about the world, possibly speak another language. Hayden Panettiere seems ages older than Miley, but is only three years older and hasn’t posed semi-n ud e with a look on her face like she’s been partying all night and having sex in that bed.
Scarlett Johannson went from young girl roles to adult roles simply by acting like an ADULT, an intelligent, mature responsible ADULT, not a sexy ****. Lindsay has yet to have an adult role because of her high schoolish behavior. Her lack of maturity shows in her choices.
Being a grown-up isn’t about being sexy; it’s about making good decisions and taking responsibility for your actions. Miley did neither here.

I think the New York Post has no right to blow this out of preportion nobody made a big deal when Lindsay posed COMPLETELY NUDE (Take it she is older but still a child actor) and now Miley has a satin sheet pressed against her chest and it’s the end of the world. Oh my god. She’s 15 yes but as she stated don’t blame her for making mistakes, she’d a normal person, whether you believe it or not and if you have something to write bad about Miley then you need to look in the mirror and check reality their are people in the entertainment world that are doing stuff worse than having a sheet over their chests. This picture is beautiful and Miley is a very beautiful and artistic girl and she deserves all the support she can get. And as for any pictures posted on the web of her you can just hold you tongue because their are far worse pictures on the peoples myspace’s who write bad about a sweet young girl. So before you talk I say look in the mirror and don’t take something so harshley. Miley handles these situations very well and I respect that.This was for a photoshoot and if you would read before you talk her family left except for her grandmother and teacher and so Trish (her Mom) was there she probally would have put her foot down. And how do you know she didn’t ground her for this you don’t live with her. Miley was there with herself making the decisions and so she chose a wrong move. In the long run this picture is beautiful and Miley should respect that she has the ability to take such beautiful photos. Never blame someone for their opinion because some people make mistakes yes and I’m sure everybody has something they wish they could take back so next time read the whole story or don’t open your mouth. Miley is beautiful and will still make it far and thats that.
