Superheroes seek box office invincibility

“Iron Man,” which opens across North America on Thursday night, not only kicks off Hollywood’s extended summer movie season, it supercharges what is shaping up as the biggest season ever for comic book-to-film transfers.

“It’s not a fad,” Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige said of the onslaught of movies built around comic book avengers. “It’s the new archetype for the summer blockbuster. Everybody loves special effects, everybody loves epic entertainment, and that’s what comics have been delivering for decades and decades.”

“Iron Man” will be followed by “The Incredible Hulk” and “Wanted” on June 13 and 27, respectively, both from Universal. “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army” unleashes July 11, again from Universal, while “The Dark Knight,” Warner Bros.’ Batman sequel, alights July 18. Lionsgate releases “Punisher: War Zone” September 12.

On July 2, Sony opens its Will Smith-starrer “Hancock,” which is not actually based on an actual comic but does promise to turn superhero conventions on their head with its tale of a depressed, alcoholic, bumbling hero.

It speaks to the vitality of the genre that Hollywood can schedule all these movies in the same time period without fear that they will cannibalize each another. “Iron Man” is a Marvel action movie featuring a man in a super-powered armor, while “Wanted” is an R-rated action movie about a society of super-assassins. “Hulk” is a Marvel monster movie set amid a realistic backdrop, while “Hellboy” aims to take audiences to underground worlds fertilized by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s imagination. “Dark Knight” is expected to offer another dark, psychological exploration from director Christopher Nolan.

“If they were all about a guy who runs into an alley and changed into a costume or into a phone booth to put on a mask, they would have come and gone in a year or two,” Feige said.

Maintaining a heroic diversity is important to Marvel as it gets ready to greenlight its next films from a slate that ranges from “Ant-Man” (directed by Edgar Wright) to “Thor” (a Norse God adventure from Matthew Vaughn) to the patriotic, flag-waving “Captain America.”

“Because they can be so varied in genre, in rating, in execution, there is a lot of room for them (in the marketplace),” said Donna Langley, president of production at Universal Studios. “But you should be mindful about the competitive landscape. You obviously don’t want to release ‘Superman’ and ‘Spider-Man’ the same day.”

These movies are not slam dunks, by any means. The riskiest among the crop is the Marvel-backed “Hulk,” which has seen a behind-the-scenes drama play out between star Ed Norton and Marvel over competing visions. There is also the hurdle of getting audiences to see a movie that is not a sequel but a relaunch of a film that bombed five years ago.

On the other hand, not all of these flicks are $100 million-plus gambles. Universal has been keen on keeping the budgets on “Hellboy 2″ and “Wanted” in the $80 million range.

Says Langley: “It’s like animated movies — we went from two or three a year to 25 a year. Only so many of them are going to overperfrom, and the others are going to do OK.”

As it ups the superhero ante, Hollywood is still learning is to be mindful of the characters’ fan bases and creators. The comic book fans scrutinize everything from director and actors to costumes to how closely the films follow the source material. Creators, meanwhile, can spout off against any movie that they feel betrays their vision. Alan Moore, for example, never publicly blessed the movies “V for Vendetta” and “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” which were based on his comics.

In the summer, “Wanted” strays from its source material. The original miniseries was, in part, a nihilistic tale of evil super-assassins killing one another as well as the good guys. But because that comic’s fan base isn’t as big as that of Hellboy or Spider-Man, Universal felt comfortable veering from the comic to make it more appealing to a broader-based audience, with a little help from Angelina Jolie. But it also made sure creator Mark Millar was involved, going to him for ideas and using his dialogue for voice-over bits.

“If you deviate from the comic book, do it in concert with the creator so he doesn’t wage an Internet campaign,” Langley said.

While another ironic take on costumed heroes, 1999’s “Mystery Men,” fizzled at the box office, times, audiences and movies have changed, making “Hancock” as close to a sure-bet as you can find at the box office.

Both Sheff books were published in February and became bestsellers. Houghton Mifflin’s “Beautiful Boy” is being sold in Starbucks locations around the country as part of the Starbucks Select book series. The movie will be produced in association with Starbucks.

Before Plan B, the production shingle run by Brad Pitt, moved from Warner Bros. to Paramount, the company acquired the James Frey memoir “A Million Little Pieces,” a fast-tracked project that stalled after Frey acknowledged that he significantly embellished his story of addiction and recovery. WB and Plan B are still developing that project in conjunction with Warner Independent Pictures.

Plan B and Par are separately developing “Eat, Pray, Love,” an adaptation of the bestselling Elizabeth Gilbert memoir that Julia Roberts will topline, with Ryan Murphy directing, as well as actioner “The Killer” and the fantasy horror project “Black Hole,” both of which will be directed by Pitt’s “Fight Club” helmer David Fincher.

Best news I’ve heard in some time.

The “Golden Shower,” couple that is HILARIOUS. Whoever coined it first - mad props.

Facts: You heard it here FIRST….this is a Huvaniston set-up, that works for all parties concerned.

No way, was Maniston going to let another year go by, watching Brad and Angelina rule the world at Cannes & Venice with their A-list films, and A-list beauty, and A list babies and pregnant belly - for the second time.

HOW ‘HUVANISTON’S MACHINE WORKS:

1) Much like the previous strategy with Vaughn, the goal is to say nothing and let speculation escalate to her usual phony ‘Happiness is the Best Revenge on Brad‘ levels - she’ll typically give the rags something to talk about with some staged PDA (See the airplane balcony makeout session Vaughn conveniently in front of photogs, see Sculfor exiting her home, smart water bottle in hand, et al).

2) Because the relationship is being ’staged,’ (I won’t comment on whether or not PEEple are being PEE’d on - or getting f**ked, as the visual is a bit too nauseating for me ) the plan is to NOT have her PR speak to the nature of the relationship (much like the Vaughn scenario) they get MORE PR mileage out of it that way.

3) This is why Huvane has recently commented that he will not be responding about ‘Jen’s personal life.’ He knows he will be getting pointed questions and doesn’t want to be in a position to say yay or nay. If these are friendly outings to do damage control for Peeboy (i’ll get to that in a minute..heehee) and make her seem like NOT such a desperate lonely famewhore, Huvane can’t say anything.

4)Peeboy, who blogged like a fiend on his obnoxious website, telling ex gf’s to stop calling him, calling Perez Hilton out, trying out his standup, etc. — suspiciously “went quiet,” (he wrote) on March 27th on his blog after this long rambling ridiculously bloviating bit of hot air…about the state of the world - it was ridiculous, but sounded like a sign off. If not for good - then at least for the time that he and Maniston will be milking this in the rags and mags.

5) Finally — the reason for both. Well, isn’t it obvious - with her, it always is. She’s facing yet another sad pathetic year of MOVIE STARS Brad & Angelina ruling the world, at Cannes & Venice with their A list films, their A-list beauty and A list babies…and this time Angie will debut her big A-list pregnant belly along with that incomparable beauty. Maniston HAD to do something because the next JP wee one(s) is soon to debut. She could NOT be alone, nothing to promote, and 40. Kate Hudson ruined her Owen Wilson plans. Orlando Bloom’s gf ruined her last desperate ploy. She knows she can’t compete on any level w/ the Brangelina, but at the very least, she can TRY to appear to be NOT sad and alone. She needed SOMEONE famous, and models and pretty boys and key grips weren’t cutting it….wa-lah a musician, albeit an annoying cheesy lame one who has a weak bladder and gets a hankerin for gay fat cuban gossip queens w/ heads the size of boulders.

6) Lastly, Maniston and Peeboy share a close mutual pal - who suggested they fight the evil forces of embarrassment and mortification together. Perez Hilton is largely viewed as having told the truth about making out with John Mayer (Perez took a lie detector test and PASSED - I for one, believe him.)…Peeboy was being raked over the coals and losing fans left and right - if the Jessica Simpson period was humilating, this was so to the 1000th power. This is a combined media ploy to do damage control and image building for both of them. he gets a ‘cougar,’ and can reassert his masculinity, she is seen as not desperate and alone while ‘Brangelina,’ make the world cream at Cannes.

But as usual, she’s played her hand to soon. She’ll also probably get called out by Min at some point, just like last time. Just wait til Mayer goes on tour too. LOL Let the countdown clock til the next Golden Shower begin!!

Good times! I’m just glad she’s occupying herself with something - I love when she tries to fake having a life, it just takes her father and farther and farther away from the Brangie coattails.

Geez woman, take a chill pill. There’s nothing you can do about the fact about that Angelina Jolie is in love with Brad Pitt. She is with him because she wants to be with him. No one forces her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. He is the father of her children, the most important people in her life. She would not entrust her children to somebody she didn’t think was good enough. Just accept it and move on.
