I wanted to like it but it was just annoying and boring.. and very 90’s/done before. After hearing her sing in Lost in Translation I was a little surprised she’s put out a record, but I guess she’s going to. At least she sounds slightly better then she did in the movie and she is a good actress so who cares about the music.
wow….everything about it is just horrible….
wow….everything about it is just horrible….
The song was alright. the video was actually better than the singing.
I dont like her tone, I know some might find it edgy, or folk like or just different, but the tone of her voice when singing is not appealing to me. It just sounded flat and lifeless.
I think I like it. At first i was like… oh… Now it’s kidna grown on me.
Plus I love Tom Waits.
have any of you heard what tom waits actually sounds like? If you think scarlett’s vocals are bad (which they’re not)…
(neither are his)
i love this.
in the way that paris hilton is a “genius” at making herself a celebrity, scarlett is a (lesser) genius at marketing herself to the public as cultivated, intellectual, artistic, precocious, and talented. she’s going for alternative street cred: last year she sang with Jesus & Mary Chain at Coachella, now she’s doing a cover album of a master & iconoclast whose style gives her room to sing badly without ruining the song. it’s a genius move really. waits’ material is critic-proof, plus people will buy it out of curiosity. even if her voice is this bad on the other tracks, the album will still do well.
taste is subjective. art is subjective. but skill is not. there are some standards for talent, otherwise we could all scat out a bunch of random notes and call ourselves musical geniuses. the hacks succeed when people drop those standards: enter scarlett. she has meager talent, no skill, and certainly no vision. just go buy waits’ albums

this scarlett thing reminds me of something . . . someone pointed out to me that IF (big if) someone like ashlee simpson had become popular as a legitimate musician–doing garage pop and such, working hard, playing her own instruments & writing music, but still had basically the exact same voice–people would never say she couldn’t sing. if she were a real musician, no one would ever say that. she’d obviously be a less of a poseur & more likable if that were true, but her flaws as a singer would be embraced for individual style were she a real musician.
it’s a similar thing with Scarlett. she’s kind of droning and talk/singing unremarkably, passively, piggybacking on existing unconventional artists while singing someone else’s amazing words. if she were a real singer-songwriter with a wealth of talented lyrics and melodies to contribute, her voice wouldn’t bother anyone because the imperfections–including her passive delivery–would be part of her artistic character. look at Joanna Newsome–her voice is weird as sh*t, and she can’t sing by many people’s standards, but she’s an unbelievably original talent & I can’t get enough of her.
but Scarlett is not a musician, not a songwriter, and only a singer by a huge stretch of the imagination. this is karaoke.
nope. hack!
Ugh, she’s so overrated in everything!!!!!! I agree with iota in that Tom Waits’ songs are critic-proof and so of course she’ll probably sell millions of albums, probably more than he ever did because people are idiots, and we’ll all be stuck with having to listen to her a$$ sing forever!!!!
Wow, #84 I couldn’t even read through what you wrote.. I was seriously like *yawn*
Anyhow, I don’t like it, it’s dull and Scarlett’s getting so boring to me.
hahahahaha! absolutely not.
hahaha #87 if you can move up from elementary reading skills #84 actually makes a good point
i love blogs
wow speechless sense i like you scarlet im not going to say anything rude but girlfriend please stick to acting
leslie- i love joanna newsome too!
this however, is crap
the video is cliche amateur film school, and her voice is forgettable, but i’m sure some pretentious suckers will buy into it instead of just getting the original
Wow! and I had heard such good things about her singing in the media, so I was exited to finally see what she had to offer. I must say NOT impressive. At the very best you could describe her voice as less than ordinary.. stick to acting Scarlet -PLEASE!!
Scarlett is hoping that people will make this association: “tom waits is talented and deep. scarlett is doing a tom waits cover album. Therefore, scarlett too must be talented and deep! oooooh she’s so artsy and smart! all you haters go back to your britney pop crap, she’s a REAL artist!”
she’s marketing to sheep like #48 (unless the name “hypocrite” is a commentary on the respective post, in which case, well done). her audience is the kind who’ll buy whatever they hear is underground and think they’re music experts since they don’t listen to mainstream radio, but whose pretentious ambitions have kept them from any genuine understanding of what constitutes talent.
I don’t know whats worse Heidi’s Higher or this crap she’s singing!
I have never laughed so much in my life, she sounds horrible…I threw up in my mouth. Girl needs to stick to her acting with the pedophile.
Does anyone inhere even know who Tom Waits is, and sounds like..
I think she does a great job at singing in her own sound, thats what cover-songs is meant to be done. She seems to have listened alot to Nick Cave, and I like it. but then it isnt mainstream pop, so proberly not many wanna listen to it.. but they should try…..
WTF!?!?! What the hell is this? Scarlett….stick to acting and flaunting your boobs because this song SUCKS.
Is that her vocal? sounds like a background singers singing the song.
um yeah i think more than a few of us are tom waits fans, and we’re laughing the hardest. he’s a god, she’s a HACK
i can’t wait til she tries to sing live!
