Damn… there are a lot of bitter people out there just dying for the chance to shoot someone down!

Tom Waits, like Dylan, Morrison, Cohen, Reed and a myriad of others do not have conventionally “good” singing voices and it always sounds weird when someone who does, covers their material.

In my opinion, any good cover requires two essential elements: 1. The original should be recognisable beneath the cover and 2: The cover should bring some element of artistic interpretation to and distinction from the original.

I LOVE Tom Waits and I have to say I thought this was a damned good cover that had both the essential elements.

Does Johannson have a conventionally “good” singing voice? I don’t know… and listening to this track I never will because it a conventionally “good” singing voice is NOT what was required for this job!

It seems to me that more singers need to learn their own limitations and work within them… and IF (big “if” because until we hear more we simply don’t know) Johannson does have a limited singing ability, then good on her for choosing material that accommodates those limitations… That alone puts her in soome illustrious company, like Dylan, Morrison, Cohen, Reed etc.

Somehow I don’t think we are getting Ave Maria released as a single by any of them in the foreseeable future!

All in all I liked it… certainly enough to check out the rest of the album and certainly enough to write here.

One last question people… Would it really hurt to find something constructive to say occasionally instead of groundless tear downs and shamless comparisons to the papparazzi’s victim d’jour? You talk about being above such shamelss and pointless celebrity for the sake of celebrity… but then you prove yourselvesto be every bit the victim simply by being so damned concious of it all!

Remember, it is not actually all that serious… It IS entertainment!

Jesus christ!!!wtf ??? what an awful ugly voice wow did she even release that her voice sucks ? someone stop her plz ,and she looked so terrible whene they were putting on her the make up her skin looked terrible, scarlette johansson is getting so low , she is all about attention since she is sucking as an actress now she is trying to find somehting else for the attention to exist, what next singing in the toilette ? i think she should do it , she would do us all a favor .

she’s pretty but her voice is horrible. ew! sounds like she’s drunk or something. haha!

i like her acting ok, but dang, the song is alright , however if i sang like that i sure wouldnt want anyone else to hear me. she should concentrate more on Ryan and less on her music.

I think it would take some getting used to… but this is the only song i’ve really heard her sing…. but as of right now i would pick scarlett as an actress over a singer… at this point anyway….

I think that this is a refreshing sound. I get tired of hearing the same beats and pop voices. It’s edgy and totally not what I expected. Can’t wait to hear more.
