As for the article, I’m not surprised that an american magazine made that mistake… I am surprised though than an asian male (alexis is a guy) would make the mistake however.

I didn’t fail the game at all, I actually scored several points above the average (13 out of 18). And FYI, my cousin–who is 1/2 Korean–admits that even she has trouble differentiating between Chinese people and Japanese people sometimes. It doesn’t make you racist, at worst it means you aren’t extremely observant.

I’d love to know what you got on the quiz (if you even took it). My point is that we don’t need you to inform us that not all white people look alike. I have no idea where you live that this information isn’t already universally known.

Just because a person may be Asian, part-Asian, or knows someone who is Asian doesn’t give them a right to be prejudiced and a total jack-ass with stereotypes. NO ONE has a right to be prejudiced and people are basically being hypocritical and obviously disrespectful when they are so despite Jared, apparently being Asian, it really doesn’t matter. Point is, putting up that site is rude and obnoxious.

As for the whole mistake on People’s part, it’s just really stupid. Not all Asians look alike. It’s like with people of any other race, there are those who do seem to resemble a certain race, but aren’t, or seem to resemble other people– these things don’t just happen to Asians and black people. And isn’t it the editor’s job to make sure that everything is in order and that the facts are correct? The brainless moron should’ve done his research on the subject he was covering, as well.

btw, I agree with dsnbnh. There is a little phenomenon called genetic drift where populations who have been historically isolated show less phenotypic variation–resulting in groups of people who don’t have as much genetic variation and thus look very similar. So that’s why it can be a bit harder to differentiate between different nationalities within Asia (Japanese, Chinese, etc.) That’s NOT to say that it’s hard to distinguish between individual Asians–for example of course it’s easy not to mistake Lucy Liu for Gong Li (both beautiful but look nothing alike)…but without knowing beforehand would any of you be able to say exactly where either of their families originally came from? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it doesn’t make you a racist for not knowing for sure.

For pete’s sake, I think it was an honest mistake on People magazine’s part. Obviously when you put the two brothers side to side you can tell them apart, they probably just got the name wrong. People on this site really need to relax and stop trying to label complete strangers racist.

Whites do look alike. Try to tell apart a French Canadian from an American, British from a German, Australian from Scottish man, Irish from Russian, Swedish from Norwegian, etc etc… you can’t tell the difference just like with asians, spanish, or africans.

you’re telling you’re a college graduate, and here I thought you were 12 year old.

How comes you think that “it’s universally known that all whites do not look alike”? Of course to most asian all whites DO look alike, just like to most white people, all asians look the same. And Asians make up HALF of the planet population. Technically, your “universal fact” can’t be universal because 50% disagree (and I haven’t started to count the africans, even though I think they can not tell whites apart either).

Leah has tried to make her point clear several times, but it seems that you don’t have the ability to understand, so I guess someone else should step in, before you guys throw even “prettier” words to each other faces.

As for “the lack of genetic variation”, now that’s another racist assumption. It’s just a typical excuse of those whites who can’t tell asians apart. How do you think we can distinct Indians, Chineses, Japaneses, Koreans, Philippines, Thais….? My own country has 52 ethnics, and we can tell the major ones apart by looking at them. All thanks to the “genetic variation” that you think we don’t have.

Phuong–I’ve traveled all over the world. I’ve seen things you probably have never dreamed of. I don’t need you to tell me to open my eyes about anything.

When I said that all white people don’t look alike, I wasn’t talking about different “white” nationalities (Irish, German, Polish, etc.) Clearly it would be difficult to tell what a white person’s country of origin would be without asking them. All I was saying to Leah is that I don’t know of anyone who would argue that it is difficult to differentiate between white people on an INDIVIDUAL basis, or between any two asian people, african people, etc. Before trying to “educate” me please go back and re-read my posts,although I do apologize if something wasn’t clear. If you let up on the condescension you will see that you and I are arguing the same exact thing. This is my last post on the subject.

Oh yeah, looking at the comments. What’s wrong with Asian people looking similar? I think that sometimes Angmohs look similar to me too. It isnt surprising that people look similar no matter their race.
