NEW ORLEANS—As former President Jimmy Carter nailed down the front porch of a home under construction Wednesday, singer Harry Connick Jr. gave an update on the progress being made in the Upper 9th Ward, an area slow to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The two are supporters of Habitat for Humanity, and both expressed their excitement about the organization’s construction of houses in this section of the city, where block after block of flooded-out homes still sit vacant on lots with overgrown grass.

“To be part of this rebuild is thrilling,” said Connick, who took his 12-year-old daughter, Georgia, to the construction site. “I feel like it’s a moral responsibility to rebuild New Orleans, and I’m going to continue to do what I can to help.”

UN: 2.5m in need of aid in Burma

The United Nations has increased its estimate of the number of people in urgent need of aid in Burma to 2.5 million.

It also said over half a million people may now be sheltering in temporary settlements after being left destitute by Cyclone Nargis nearly two weeks ago.

The UN has called for a high-level donors conference to deal with the crisis.

Western powers have warned that restrictions on foreign aid workers and equipment in Burma is increasing the risk of starvation and disease.

They are piling the pressure on Burma’s ruling generals to allow a massive aid effort as relief workers struggle to help the cyclone survivors.

The tropical storm left up to 128,000 people dead in Burma’s heavily populated Irrawaddy delta.

Supplies of food, medicine and temporary shelter to the devastated region are still being sent in dribs and drabs to devastated communities.

Monasteries and schools are sheltering the homeless and refugees are clamouring to get into the international run centres rather than government-run camps.

Along the river near the delta town of Bogalay, where around 10,000 people are thought to have perished, rotting corpses are still tangled in the scrub. Villagers have to drink from the same river.

Burma has raised its official toll to 38,491 dead, 1,403 injured and 27,838 missing, but independent experts say the likely figures are far higher.

Louis Michel, the European Union’s top aid official, is in Rangoon for talks with the junta a day after Thailand’s prime minister was told Burma could deal with the problem by itself.

“We want to convince the authorities of our good faith. We are there for humanitarian reasons,” Mr Michel said.

He dismissed suggestions from some countries that they should bring in aid without waiting for the authorities’ permission.

But as the clock ticks and conditions deteriorate, with monsoon rains adding to the misery and aggravating transportation problems, the political pressure on Burma is likely to increase.

Angelina Jolie and Jack Black are to promote their new movie at the Cannes Film Festival, after the actor let slip his co-star was expecting twins.

The pair are in Cannes for the animated film Kung Fu Panda, for which they provide the voices.

On Wednesday Jack showed off his kung fu moves to the media, with 40 life sized “pandas” on the Carlton Hotel pier.

Dustin Hoffman and Lucy Liu also take part in the film, which centres around Po, a clumsy kung fu fan who works in his family’s noodle shop. He is unexpectedly chosen to fulfil an ancient prophecy and join the kung fu world.

As the festival got under way, Jack dropped the hint during a side-by-side interview with Angelina for a television show. He joked to Angelina that she and husband Brad Pitt will “have as many as (the) ‘Brady Bunch’ when you have these.”

Angelina’s spokesman was not available for comment last night.

Another film which the actress stars in, Changeling, directed by Clint Eastwood, is in the running for the Palme d’Or award.

And the film How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, starring Simon Pegg and Gillian Anderson is being promoted during the festival, kicking off with a celebrity-packed party.

The guest list includes Lily Allen, Mischa Barton and Dennis Hopper.

CANNES, France - There are two bulging bellies in the room, and both of the owners are pregnant - sort of.

Angelina Jolie, carrying twins, sticks out her round midriff and presses it against the basketball-size stomach of Jack Black. “I came as a panda,” she says, a reference to the chubby black-and-white bear Black plays in their animated comedy Kung Fu Panda.

“To compete?” Black asks.

Dustin Hoffman and Lucy Liu, who also supply voices for the film, are watching, so Black pushes out his gut to maximum effect, determined to best Jolie as they go bellybutton to bellybutton. “That’ll make the front pages,” Hoffman says.

The stomach standoff took place Wednesday in a penthouse at the Hotel Carlton, overlooking the bustling start of the Cannes Film Festival along the waterfront below.

Kung Fu Panda, one of the featured films, premieres tonight and opens Stateside on June 6.

When Jolie entered the room, she immediately congratulated Black, who also is expecting. His wife, Tanya Haden, is pregnant with their second. Jolie mentions twins casually, as though it were already common knowledge and not the subject of intense speculation about whether she and companion Brad Pitt are adding one or two more children to their brood of four.

When talk turns to Black’s son, Sam, who is almost 2, Jolie asks, “Terrible 2’s?”

The actor shakes his head. “I don’t see it as terrible. He does act out, but I have to not smile sometimes when he’s naughty because I don’t want him to know I’m enjoying it. … But I am, inside.”

Good Morning all. I see the whiny hens are still here screaming and crying at the Ocean. The genetically blessed twins have put them over the edge. It is hysterical that the hens think that BP and AJ do not get buck wild in any corner they can escape to. Hens are in deep denial, or deep do-do. I love it. Live in your fantasy world hens. Image that Peeboy is a knight in shining Armour instead of a creepy chessey singer with a wayward sprayer. BP and AJ are doing just fine, loving and living life. I wish them all the best. Hoff: No, we are still to make a film together. We’re together in this film, but we haven’t shared a scene together as such.

Frenchy: To make a cartoon and voiceover the characters, do you do it because it’s fun, for your kids or because it’s well paid?
Hoff: You do it for your grandchildren, the money…
Angie: You do it because it’s so much fun and it’s great to do something that you’re not really used to. To play an animated character in a great story, in a film that the kids will like and where we enjoy ourselves…so there’s really no reason not to do it!
Frenchy: Tomorrow you’re going to climb the stairs (Les Marches) and the film will be presented. Dustin, does this kind of this make you nervous? Is it important or just a fun thing to do?
Hoff: Well no I’m very nervous about it because I’ve never done this kind of film and now that I have I’ve lost all my natural ___, as you can see! So on the red carpet, I’m in a state of ___ ! (sorry guys)

Frenchy: I can see that you’ve previously done many animations and it makes you laugh a lot, Angelina…since your marriage to Brad Pitt..what does it feel like to be followed everyone? You’re one of the biggest worldwide stars..is is very shocking to be hounded by the paparazzi?
Angie: Since when did I get married..? Um.. I don’t know..my day consists of spending time at home with my family, it’s 99% of my life and it’s only very rarely that we go out to these kind of events..and we don’t let the paparazzi become a part of our lives. We try as much to be with our kids, have fun with them..we focus on them.
Frenchy: Ok I’m going to ask you a paparazzi question: I’ve heard rumors that you’re expecting twins. Is this true?
Angie: Yes, yes we are.
Frenchy: There we have it, an announcement on France 2..congratulations Angelina! I know that you’ve lived in Paris and now in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat…what is it in particular that you like about France?
Angie: Well, I think it’s beautiful here, and I love the country. We also want our kids to learn another language, and for them to know what it means to be American but also European, and to be close to other parts of the world…and France is a good base for that. Also, the language itself is beautiful, our son leans French and I think that the others will aswell..so it’s great for us to have the whole family here.
Frenchy: Last question for Dustin: I know that you’re very popular here in France..you’re first film was in the 70’s, such as Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man..are you still going to keep making movies for a long time to come?
Hoff: Firstly, I have one thing so say as it’s the last question..can I say it?
