Clint Eastwood’s latest film Changeling, is apparently now to be known as The Exchange after the director took a shine to the French translation to the original title. It premiered in competition at Cannes, and is one of the front runners for the coveted Palm d’Or award.

The Exchange restored my faith in Hollywood film-making. Everything about it is exquisite from the script, to performances, direction, settings and camerawork to the sound, music and editing. It is film-making the old fashioned way without silly camera tricks, flash cutting or shaking hand-held shots.

Eastwood has crafted the story of a mother who’s son is abducted with pace, suspense, tension, horror, emotion and with it carries a startling insight in to the corrupt 1930s LA police force. Angelina Jolie, in a career best performance, plays Christine Collins - a hard working single mother in late 1920s California - who returns home from work one day to find her son has disappeared. Only after 5 months is there a lead on the case, when her young son Walter is spotted in Illinois. He is reunited to his mother by police captain J.J. Jones (Jeffrey Donovan) in front of a collection of press photographers, but she immediately says that the boy is not her son, despite him claiming to be. To save embarrassment, the police ask her to take the boy home. Days pass, and Collins’ claims of the boy not being her son (confirmed by him being 3 inches shorter than Walter and also being circumcised when Walter was not) fall on dear ears in the LAPD; they are now keen to push ahead with a positive press and dismiss anyone questioning their professionalism. Collins fears that time is being wasted in not continuing the search for Walter, so she goes public. The police, keen to silence her, incarcerate her in a mental institution.

Only when community activist (John Malkovich) takes up her case do things start moving, and Collins is released. Meanwhile in the desert, another police detective - on a routine illegal child immigrant case - discovers an eerie truth that leads to a dramatic and highly engrossing conclusion.

Eastwood cements his reputation as being a master of the game with this film. It has ‘Oscars’ written all over it.

Wow, so many pics of Angelina this week. I can’t believe how big she is! I love the weight she has gained, her face has filled out again, and she has never looked more gorgeous. People are saying that she won’t carry the twins to term. Why not? Jennifer Lopez did, so can Angie. So what if she shops? The only time I see her shopping is for her kids. Toys, books, girls clothes the other day. I imagine it DOES take a lot of time to shop for such a big growing family. Angelina is a phenomenal woman. Period. She impresses me all the time. She’s heavily pregnant with two babies and it hasn’t slowed her down one bit. In fact she seems empowered by it. More power to her. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly.

Brad is protective of her and the kids also. But I’m puzzled why he seems so annoyed by the paparazzi presence here. It’s been one of the main constants of their relationship - the paps. If the kids were with them it’d be one thing, but it’s the two of them on an outing. Gesturing to the paps to stop filming is reasonable and understandable, but ultimately a little delusional too.

Angie’s response seems a bit more sensible. Which is, ‘live your life and keep it moving’. Otherwise, you’ll always be bothered. It ain’t gonna change. That should be evident by now, lol.

On a shallow note, love the hoop earrings and flip flops.

Brad is back to wearing his hat. But it’s okay because we had seen him without one in at least 3 ocassions lately. He still had a headful of hair.

LOL I knew she’d win it on Monday night. She just left the big boys in the dust, she was great. I was so happy that it came down to her and Jason, that’s what I was hoping for. You could tell he was genuinely happy for her, and I love the friendship that the three of them (Cristian included) had. Who would’ve thought they have toys r us in Cannes. Anyhoo, nice to see them, they both look good as usual. I don’t blame them for not bring any of the kids after that scene of total chaos the other day. I guess now is the countdown to the twins. Can’t wait to see them!

Also, to ‘lurking about’ who’s wondering why brad is gesturing to papz to cut it out filming in the toy store. Like he’s suddenly now just doing that..Brad has always had a lower tolerance depending on the circumstances, and he HAS done it before..when the family was eating in that family sphagetti place in Germany, when he and Angie would go out to dinner in Prague..and there are others times as well….I think he gets especially irked when it’s a family place like a toy store, and the papz end up ruining other peoples day/night as well. That’s when you’ll see Brad actually walk up to papz and TRY to reason with them, asking them to back off or negotiating.

He does this all the time.

Thanks to EVERYONE for the Changelings = Exchange absolutely smashing reviews! There will be no doubt something will be happening in the Oscar season. It is already the Nov. release, a huge sign Clint is going to go for it.

As for seeing this movie… the subject matter is too close to home. I don’t know if I can sit through it… I have 4 and 7 year olds and these kidnapping fear is every mother’s nightmare. It must have been so hard for Angelina to live through it, but as she said in the press interview, Clint seemed to be very kind and he knew very well how an actress, who is a loving mother, will have to go though with it. She said he was so focused that she didn’t have to be at that place of agony for any longer than necessary.

Angelina has been having such rich life as a person, woman, wife, and mother. She could relate to her roles at the deepest level drawing from her experiences. Life experiences make much better actors.

It reminds me a ‘wannabe actress’ albeit very rich media mogul, Oprah at Alexander interview. Eric Bana said his experience being a father makes him relate to his role as Hector, a father of an infant, much better. Oprah said sarcastically, “Oh, really?” as if she couldn’t believe that can be true. Oprah might have had a tragic youth, and is generous in charity, but as a person I see her as quite simple. Definitely not someone who can understand and express the complexity of human nature as an actress.

Cannes Film Fest 2008–Clint Eastwood’s new period thriller, “The Changeling,” starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, premieres in competition at the 2008 Cannes Film Fest.

The Setting

The Changeling is set in Los Angeles, in the late 1920s. The history of the city is marked by sensational tales of corruption, cover-ups and murder during the city’s formative years. From the Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle rape and murder trial of a young starlet (Virginia Rappe) in 1921, and the kidnapping of the evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson in 1926, to The Black Dahlia murder in 1947, scandal has long permeated the city and shone unfavorable light upon its political operatives.

But it was the little-remembered story of one working class woman’s struggle—amidst insurmountable odds—to find her missing son that would, 80 years later, forge a partnership between several of Hollywood’s most highly regarded filmmakers. The incredible tale of Christine Collins was one that almost vanished to obscurity before a former journalist stumbled upon her sensational, poignant story.

Within the subterranean halls of Los Angeles City Hall, the dusty archives of city business dating back almost 100 years are housed. Among these tens of thousands of pages of documents lies the public record of Christine Collins and the City Council welfare hearings from the late 1920s. They relate a patchwork tale of the disappearance of her 9-year-old son Walter and the corrupt machinations of the LAPD during and after the flawed investigation of the case.

Several years ago, screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski, a former journalist who has written for the L.A. Times, the Herald Examiner, and Time, stumbled across this astonishing story of a working-class woman who brought down a political machine. Straczynski knew he had a lead when a longtime contact phoned him up.

He recalls: “A source I had at City Hall called one day and said they were burning old records, and that there was something I should take a look at before they put it into the incinerator. So I zoomed down to City Hall, and they had a transcript of a City Council welfare hearing in the case of Christine Collins. I began reading the testimony and thought, ‘This can’t actually have happened. This has got to be a mistake.’ But it was enough for me to get hooked before the book went into the fire.”

Despotic Political Infrastructure

Los Angeles in 1928 was in the grips of a despotic political infrastructure, led by Mayor George E. Cryer and enforced by Police Chief James E. “Two Guns” Davis (often photographed in a gunslinger pose with his weapons) and his sanctioned gun squad that terrorized the city at will. That despotic rule began to unravel when Collins, a single mother raising a son in a working-class neighborhood in Los Angeles, reported her nine-year-old missing. Months of fruitless searching followed, and the police had nothing to show, save an onslaught of negative publicity and mounting public pressure to find a solid lead in the kidnapping.

When a boy claiming t be Walter was discovered in DeKalb, Illinois, Christine Collins, and all involved in the search, waited with bated breath. Letters and photos were exchanged, and the authorities believed the missing person’s case had been solved. Collins scrapped together the money to bring the boy home, and LAPD organized a very public photo-op reunion with the found child and anxious mother. Hoping to put a stop to the scrutiny surrounding their inability to solve this case (and others) and desperate for uplift from human-interest success to counter the string of corruption scandals, members of the department felt the reunion could spell public redemption for LAPD’s top brass.

The only problem was that the child who arrived home was not Walter. But despite her immediate and repeated declarations that the boy was not hers, Collins was rebuffed by Captain J. J. Jones, the officer in charge of the case. Christine was told, as recounted from the City Council hearing transcripts, to “try him for a couple of weeks.” Confused and disoriented, she agreed, and the case closed. Or did it?

Emotional Gravity

“There is an excitement for me when drawing from a true story,” remarks producer Brian Grazer. “I liked the subject matter, and found the culture surrounding this incident to be fascinating, and in some ways appalling, but it captivated me. The fact that it did happen gives the story so much more emotional gravity.

Knowing director-producer Clint Eastwood had a similar sensibility when it came to fact-based material, Grazer and partner Ron Howard called the filmmaker to discuss the script they had optioned.

Quick and Simple

Clint Eastwood recalls: “I took it with me on a trip to Berlin. On the way back on the plane, I read it and I liked it a lot. As soon as I got in, I called Brian and Ron and said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do this.’ And they said, ‘Angelina Jolie liked the script and wants to do this. I said, ‘She’d be great. I like her work a lot. And that’s how it came about—very quick and simple.” Eastwood’s interest in the project piqued even more when he realized that “the truth was stranger than fiction.”

Approach as a Director

With more than 30 films to his directorial credit, Eastwood has mastered the economy of shooting and considered himself a director influenced by the choices he would make as an actor. He therefore limits rehearsals to achieve a more authentic feel in the performances and is not in favor of endless takes.

Eastwood’s longtime production partner, Rob Lorenz, was just as excited as others who had read Straczynski’s tale: “I was about 15 pages into the script, and I had to flip back to see if it was really a true story; it was so amazing to me. Straczynski’ had done something very clever. He stuck photocopies of news clippings every 15-20 pages in the script, just to remind you it was true. I was not only amazed it was all true, but astonished that I had never heard of the story before and nobody seemed familiar with it.”

However, she was willing to explore options and read the screenplay.

Straczynski’s interpretation of Christine’s tale changed her mind, as she reflects: “It’s an extraordinary story. I couldn’t stop reading it. When she faced a setback and would get back up, I’d think, ‘Good, you’re back up.’ Christine Collins is a woman whom I came to admire but, as an actor, there was a lot about the story I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to do a film about a child being kidnapped, because I think there’s something to bringing certain things into your environment, in your thoughts and in your world. But ultimately, it was her strength when faced with such odds that swayed me. I’m most fond of this story because of how it exposes corruption of those in power. It’s very timely; we still deal with that today.”

After a whirlwind week, the 32-year-old star of Changeling and Kung Fu Panda, which both premiered at the film festival, is back at Paul Allen’s seaside villa with Brad Pitt, 44, and their growing brood. The couple is laying low to enjoy family time, and were spotted doing some shopping in Nice.

Jolie and director Clint Eastwood, 77, won glowing reviews for Changeling, which got standing ovations Tuesday and predictions of major awards for both the direction and what Variety” called Jolie’s “top-notch” performance.

Reviewer Todd McCarthy wrote, “Impressive as she may have been as the wife of Danny Pearl, her performance here hits home more directly.”

The Los Angeles Times” agreed. “Based on this powerful and searing performance, it would be a good bet she will again be in the hunt for the Best Actress nomination that eluded her for A Mighty Heart last year,” reviewer Pete Hammond wrote.

The newspaper also called Eastwood’s direction “flawless” and the response to the movie “rapturous.”

PEOPLE caught up with Eastwood after the world premiere screening of You Must Remember This,, a documentary on the Golden Age of Warner Bros., which he narrates.

First time that brad was not the one bringing his partner to cannes. Angie was the one who brought brad to cannes not the other way around like he used to do.

Angie is one of the lucky ones who got directed by clint eastwood. Considering his age only a handful will ever get to be directed by clint.

Kids need stability and these children are moved from place to place, new towns, new countries. Yes i know they are well traveled but i know that some of my fondest memories are of my community, school, swim teams dance classes, familiar places and people. Its important. It’s nice these children have a big family and parents who love them but they shouldn’t pull them all over the world. It is unhealthy

Am i from where???? If you mean “low CLASS**” the answer is no my family was middle class. We were pretty average.Thanks for the concern though. And we took many trips but my family would never make we change schools every 6 months if thats what you are getting at. I had a very stable childhood with lots of friends not just my siblings to hang out with. Cool that they are going to be “well traveled” but they arent going to have any friends or a hometown to think back on. Its going to be a big blur of living out of a suitcase. I could care less because i dont even know these people. I just don’t know why they feel the need to drag these babies all over the world.

Young children feel so left when parents leave them on long trips. I bet you cried your heart out whenever your parents leave you behind on their trips not unless you were always left behind or you were an orphan for that matter. The jolie pitt children are too young to be left behind. At their age the only people that matters to them are their family not classmates or teachers.

Utahns Wanted As Extras In New Brad Pitt Movie

Actor Brad Pitt. (AP photo) SALT LAKE CITY - A casting company will be looking for a wide variety of Utah residents to appear as extras in an upcoming Hollywood motion picture, starring Brad Pitt.

Vicky Boone Casting is conducting a search for citizens of Salt Lake City, Tooele and surrounding areas to be considered as extras in the film, titled “The Tree of Life.”

Casting agents are looking for people between the ages of 5 and 65, from all ethnic backgrounds, with modern or unique looks.

An open casting call will be held on May 31 at the Deseret Peak Complex Firefighters Museum in Tooele — located at 2930 West Highway 112. The casting call will run between 9:00 a.m. and Noon.

Another casting call will be held later in the day — between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. — in West Wendover, Nev. That event will be held at the West Wendover library, located at 590 Camper Drive.

The casting process will consist of a brief visit with a member of the casting team. Applicants are asked to take along a non-returnable photo of themselves.

Filming on “The Tree of Life” will begin within the next month.

This familly is bonded. They stick together. They are a band. The only stability these kids need at that age is to be with their parents. That is the most important thing.

Travelling is the BEST education a person can have. Learning to accept and RESPECT the differences of other people and learn to appreciate other people’s cultures and traditions and the way they live is one of the biggest lessons a person NEEDS to learn. And these kids will surely know it even from this young age better than any grown ass moron who sits behind a computer screen playing God.

That is what you are lacking. RESPECT of something different of what you think is “right”!!! Just because you have learned to live in some certain way in your life and then think that’s the way it is and anything else is wrong. NO!!! Every person in this world has different experiences and different lives.You have no idea how it is to live in a fishbowl every single day of your life.

With the life style Brad and Angie have as two of the most (or the most) famous people in the world right now keeping the familly together is the best way to handle it. Taking short trips to avoid the madness of the constant harrassment of the paps and live like a normal family away from the prying eyes is quite healthy and keeps a great balance.

So stop putting everything in your own little box cause none of us has a slight idea how it is to live under the situations they live. For me they are doing the best they can. They keep their family together as much as possible and they are close to their kids like glow. Always there to support and protect them. That is something to praise them about. Not judge them.

It’s quite alarming, isn’t it. I never thought she would do this, since her surgeries have been very subtle and well done. This time she took some kind of a leap, to Lara Flynn Boyle land or Meg Ryan land. Her face looks puffed, and her eyes look pulled. The thing that always brings a chuckle is when x fans shriek that Brad looks old and how Johnny Pee Good is a HOT young thing. Yes, Brad looks “old”, he has lines on his forehead and crinkles around his eyes. But society judges male beauty differently to female beauty. And whilst I do think Jennifer is quite pretty, there’s no doubt she doesn’t have the best facial bone structure.

I’m starting to feel twinges of sympathy for x – age is HIGHLY UNLIKELY going to be very kind to her, either in her looks or in her career. Society still demands sweet young things (“SYT”) to be sweethearts. Actresses in that sweetheart space disappear as they age, (see meg ryan and others) and are replaced by the next SYT unless they also happen to be highly talented. Only the very good actresses, such as Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren, get good roles after that. On a happier note, I expect to see Kate Winslet, Cate B, Angelina join that pantheon.

Who ever said all Jolie does is shop is stupid. What do women do? As one of my coworkers said today, she needed some shopping therapy. There is nothing wrong with shopping. As for showing her boobs, she is on private property and free to do what she wants.
Why are higher standards made for Angie and Brad. Every day people shop, spend private time with family, and do other things that Brad and Angie do. Madonna’s hubby looks uncomfortable and her dress is ugly.

What you see with Uma and Ethan are two adults who loved one another at one time, share two kids and act like adults after a divorce.

Uma did not go to VF or moan and groan, she said she shared fault in the breakup, got on with her life and took care of herself and their kids. Ethan who has admitted that he was at fault and was bothered by Uma’s better career, has grown up a lot since the divorce, but has never badmouthed Uma. He seems a lot like RyanW who also needed to grow up and seems to have done so, and who has never badmouthed Reese.

Both of these men refused to run down their kid’s moms in any way shape or form.

Angie’s dress is cute in pics 5 and 6. Her legs look great. Pregnancy weight looks good on her. Look at her arms and legs have filled out. Looks great.
