Actually if you are foreigner vacationing in France and you get sick and have to go to the hospital you do get free medical care. If you an X-Pat (American working abroad on a visa) you get free medical care too.

That’s why you don’t need to take out international health insurance when visit France or Canada or Germany. But the French, Canadian’s, German’s, UK travelers to the United States actually have to buy health insurance before they visit here for work or vacation. They don’t buy health care in their native countries and neither do we when we visit them.

Now you bring up an excellent point which is…they would need more security because of their international fame. I imagine they have some sort of arrangement for security. But their doctor bill and delivery charges are covered under their health care system.

But knowing how kind and generous the JP’s are they will probably donate money for research or something like that.

The reason I brought up the puritans is 2fold

1. Europeans always ask why Americans are sexually uptight. So I was trying to answer a previous post about why we don’t like kissing for a greeting. It is MY fault for not copying it.

History in perspective:

America was going to settled eventually by someone. The age of exploration was also the age of colonization. If it wasn’t the puritans, it would have opportunists looking for riches.

Now unless you are English or Danish with proven records of your lineage to those settlers (and they did keep records) you are not a descendant of a puritan.

My ancestors did not come to this country until the 1870’s after the civil war. I am not English or Danish, so we were not puritans, we did not own slaves.

My family has served this country in 6 wars/conflicts. I currently have family on the ground in Afghanistan as we type, dodging mortars and bullets.

I love my country, but I have every right under the constitution, the first amendment to the Bill of Rights, to express my opinion. And in my opinion the Puritans were zealots.

It is also Your right to disagree with me. And Thank God for that!! :)

It’s good to see this fine actor - who back in 1981, according to IMDb.com, turned down the role that went to Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” - out on a red carpet.

But, wow! Check out the difference between Nolte, born February 1941 and Ford, born July 1942, also at Cannes for the premiere of Steven Spielberg’s new “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Even taking into account these guys’ lifestyles, diet and a possible liberal use of suncreen, there’s a huuuuge difference between the faces of these two actors, ages 67 and 65.

(It is too early for all that Oscar talk and given the political state of Hollyweird(backstabbing at its finest). However, it is nice to read the postitive reviews of Changeling and how respected as an Actress Angelina Jolie is. Besides I like Lara Croft.)

Jolie Gains Oscar Momentum in Cannes

Back in March when I wrote a piece about the Best-Actress Contenders of 2009, I included Angelina Jolie in my five shot-in-the-dark nominees. And if the buzz coming out of Cannes is any indication (Variety, Hollywood Reporter, LA Times, Emanuel Levy) the adopt-a-baby crazy hottie is starting to make me look good.

Clint Eastwood and Jolie are in Cannes promoting The Changeling (or The Exchange … nobody seems to know what the hell its called). The consensus seems to be that Jolie (so strong in A Mighty Heart last year) is very, very good, and Eastwood — at the ripe old age of 167 — delivers another strong piece of affecting work that is as powerful as it is complex.

At this stage, you’d have to consider Jolie a pretty formidable Oscar contender. It doesn’t surprise me that she reportedly gives a great performance. She’s an underrated actress who can be successful in a variety of genres (it wasn’t really her fault that the Lara Croft movies were garbage). Eastwood is a reputable guy — an Academy guy. He’s got sick pull with the people who decides these things, and Jolie has her share of the young demographic. No word on how well she does with uneducated white voters because we’re still crunching those numbers. (Yup, we’re now tracking the Oscar contenders the same way the pundits are tracking the nauseatingly long Democratic race.)

And how about Clint Eastwood? He isn’t human. Many directors lose their edge in their elder years, but not this guy. And he’s beyond his elder years. He’s in his Yoda years. Yet his films are real pieces of work — bold, even. I wasn’t a huge fan of Flags of Our Fathers but I thought it was an interesting failure. Letters From Iwo Jima was a sad but beautiful eulogy of doomed Japanese soldiers. Million Dollar Baby and Mystic River are real cinematic triumphs of varying degrees. They’re dangerous, raw with power and both very entertaining despite their dark subject matter.

The Changeling (or The Exchange) promises to add to his strong streak of films. And Mrs. Brad Pitt looks to reap the benefits, and maybe, finally, garner legitimate respect.

Oh wow, now we have “Kissgate 2″ and he turns out to be a gay reporter… ROTFLMBAO!

My Dinner with Clint

Dear Roger,
I’ve just returned from the official dinner given by the Festival for Clint Eastwood’s movie. I felt like Cinderella at the ball. The dinner was held at the swanky Restaurant La Palme d’Or on the Croisette. I wore my long evening gown just like all the French women wear at night. That’s usually the last thing you want to do after watching movies all day, and most of the American women journalists skip the gowns, but I am a hybrid this year, not quite journalist and not quite guest. Besides, this was a special evening and I wanted to make a good showing for you.

When I arrived at the Hotel Martinez I was escorted up the beautiful art deco elevator to the rooftop restaurant. The path was lined with waiters on each side bearing bottles of champagne and sparkling water. I took my water in an elongated champagne flute. The official photographer gave me the once-over but didn’t take my picture. There was no glint of recognition in his eyes, and why would there be? He moved on to famous prey.

After a while the guessing-game began: “What’s the name of your table?” A look around the room revealed tables dressed with sparkling silver and china, and on each table a sign with the name of one of Eastwood’s movies. We were standing halfway between “Million Dollar Baby” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.”

Most knew where they were sitting, but I had missed this step. Joan Dupont from the Paris Herald-Tribune smiled knowingly at me and announced, “Chaz, you are at L’Echange.” Joan broke her arm in a fall here the other day, so I helped arrange her fringed evening scarf around her shoulder. “What is the significance of that table?” I whispered to her. “Why, that’s Clint’s table!” I could hear little murmurs of appreciation. Suddenly I was not Ella of the ashes. I was wearing the golden slippers. “L’Echange” is French for the English title of Clint’s movie,” Changeling.”

This gift of seating was somehow connected with Pierre Rissient. He’s the most famous person in the movie industry that most people never heard of. More people have possibly had introductions in the movie world through Pierre than by any other single person. I loved the piece you did about Pierre from Toronto when Todd McCarthy did a documentary about him. It’s been said that between Pierre Rissient and Tom Luddy of the Telluride Film Festival, there are only two degrees of separation between all the people in the cinema of the Western world.

Pierre is from the old school of loyalty. Once on his good side he remembers you. And Pierre is very, very close with Eastwood — he was instrumental in launching Clint’s tide of recognition from the French critics. Pierre appeared at my side and told me that Clint wanted me at his table. It was a courtesy extended to me out of respect for you. A respect that has been built up over the years. They knew that neither you nor I could do a thing to help this movie. What could I do for it — include it in my little blog? Pierre said I had been a good wife and if you were here you would be sitting at this table. They weren’t going to abandon me. This was personal, not business.

I was speechless. I know I haven’t received all the invitations to the parties at the Hotel du Cap and the round-robin star interviews that we always get when you are here. And that’s okay. I know the score. So to hear Pierre express such sympathetic and humane sentiments touched me. When Clint arrived, he actually looked younger than the last time I saw him. He was with his gorgeous wife Dina and their daughter Morgan, 11, who is a natural beauty, and looks like the perfect combination of the two. Morgan told me she had a speaking role in the movie, and told me about her part in “Million Dollar Baby.” She was friendly and polite.

The photographer shoved person after person next to Clint to take their picture. Clint said, “What about Chaz’s picture?” Now the glint of recognition. “Ah, mais oui, of course. A picture with madame!” My ashes had turned into golden slippers. In due course I was also greeted by Kyle Eastwood, Clint’s jazz composer and musician son, and Alison, his actress and director daughter. It was a family affair.

When I took my seat at “L”Echange” I learned that my other tablemates were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. You will be happy to know that I wasn’t starstruck. I discussed architecture with Brad and the movie with Angelina. When Brad learned I was writing a few articles for you while you were away with a fractured hip, he told a lovely story. It was about the engineer who fell ill while finishing the Brooklyn Bridge. His wife took over and ran the operation. The man could look out his apartment window and see what was going on. It was kind of him to tell me that story. Looking at the two of them up close and personal, I have to report that they are officially the best-looking couple on the planet. I feel sorry that they are so hunted and photographed.

No, I’m just Josie Nova. I have posted in the past as Josie, my first name, as Nova, my middle name, as Cheyenne, because that’s where I was born, and as Shiloh is SOOOO beautiful because I am such a big fan of Shiloh. I’m proud of all those monikers but will continue to post from now on under Josie Nova. I have never understood the big deal of changing monikers….we’re on a celebrity blog for crying out loud. We’re not making military decisions, finding a cure for cancer or sending someone to Mars…we’re talking about celebrities….people who don’t care squat about us anyway….seriously that’s the bottom line. Having said that, I do understand that changing monikers can cause chaos sometimes. But at the end of the day everyone is anonymous.
