Ellen to McCain on Same Sex Marriage: “Our Love Is the Same”

On today’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, the lesbian talk show host talked with Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain about their views on same-sex marriage and her plans to marry her partner, actress Portia de Rossi, this summer.

“I’m obviously excited and to me this is only fair and only natural,” Ellen said.

McCain said “people should be able to enter into legal agreements, and I think that that is something that we should encourage, particularly in the case of insurance and other areas, decisions that have to be made. I just believe in the unique status of marriage between man and woman. And I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue.”

“Blacks and women did not have the right to vote,” Ellen responded. “I mean, women just got the right to vote in 1920. Blacks didn’t have the right to vote until 1870. And it just feels like there is this old way of thinking that we are not all the same. We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same. To me — to me, what it feels like — just, you know, I will speak for myself — it feels — when someone says, ‘You can have a contract, and you’ll still have insurance, and you’ll get all that,’ it sounds to me like saying, ‘Well, you can sit there; you just can’t sit there.’ That’s what it sounds like to me. It feels like — it doesn’t feel inclusive…It feels — it feels isolated. It feels like we are not — you know, we aren’t owed the same things and the same wording.”

Responded McCain, “Well, I’ve heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement. And I, along with many, many others, wish you every happiness.”

“Thank you,” joked Ellen. “So you’ll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you’re saying?”

“Touché,” McCain laughed.

“Well, my hope is someday it won’t be called a contract; it will be called marriage,” Ellen ended.

she’s awesome! ;D
FIRST COMMENT! YAY!

# 2

YAY McCAIN!

# 3

well put, ellen.

# 4

I AGREE WITH McCAIN. I WISH ELLEN ALL THE BEST. HOWEVER THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL, ABOUT A MAN AND WOMAN ENTERING A MARRIAGE TOGETHER.

# 5

Well done ellen, completely agree.

# 6

Mmmmmmm, while I don’t really agree with McCain …..marriage is marriage no matter how you word it…..I’m glad to see that he stands his ground. Ellen razzed him on it and he stood firm letting her know that he also has the right to believe in what he chooses to believe in.

That said….CONGRATS ELLEN & PORTIA!

# 7

I love Ellen!

# 8

I’m sorry but I totally agree with McCain. Ellen is awesome and hilarious. but marriage is meant to be between man and woman. personally I think gay marriage is wrong and sick. Marriage is marriage and it’s meant to go only one way!

# 9

I love me some Ellen but have to say that I wholehearterdly stand firm in my belief that the sacred union of marriage be between a man and a woman. I reluctantly agree with civil unions because I do champion the safety and protection of gays and beleive that if they are loving and commited to each other, they should receive the protection and safety of healthcare and insurance together. However, my support ends there and falls way short of supporting gay marriage.

Realitycheck @ 05/22/2008 at 11:32 am

If you agree with mccain then you might as well go get yourself a couple of slaves to help you, or your woman, cook and clean and raise the children while not allowed to work or vote. Evolution of equality will not be denied, only delayed. Do we really need our sweet grandfather that doen’t understand society in today’s world to lead our country?

I agree with Ellen! That is such a backwards way of thinking.

He didn’t even have a strong response to her argument, just basically “I think this is the way it should be because that’s the way it’s always been”. Well, traditions shouldn’t always be held sacred.

I so proud of Ellen for doing this interview. I just watched it & thought it was terrific. I like that she said “let’s talk about the elephant in the room” referring gay marriage. Bravo!! For those who are still uncomfortable with this issue check OUT our short produced to educate & defuse the controversy @ http://www.OUTTAKEonline.com

Homosexuality is a moral sin. If we say this is ok, then is murder ok, adultery? Where do you draw the line?

I like Ellen, I find her entertaining, one of the best comedians ever, but I don’t not agree with same sex marriage.

as Bette Midler once said “you know they like to move around a bit” JOHN MCCAOIN 4 President !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#10 and #11 must be really ignorant.

Mccain 08!!

Gays and Lesbians are sick people, no matter how popular or rich!
I feel sorry for them that they can not be normal in life- females should have dreams of love and life with a man-a real man- and Men should have the desires for a woman-a real woman. I do not understand their brain thoughts. They have to go through life as a FAKE (they are not what you see) they are not normal human bodies- they are ABNORMALIf we allow marriage between gays and lesbians, we will find this world in a real bad situation- no where to turn- no where to go- nothing but LIES will fill this world. Please think !- America will change dramatically and it wont be good.

agreed with kim @ 05/22/2008 at 11:59 am

i love ellen too. shes funny as hell but i dont agree with this
*
she shouldnt have said its natural..
*
whales ******* seagulls isnt natural..sorry
*
ive had friends that are gay and i dont treat like them ****
*
but i dont agree with it
*
do what u want in private, dont ask the world to accept what is wrong

#10 - Realitycheck. So you’re saying that we can’t believe in what we believe in? My aunt is a lesbian, I don’t love her any less than I did before she told the family, but that doesn’t mean I think that she and her partner should be married. People are allowed their own views and McCain was not disrespectful toward Ellen and she wasn’t disrespectful for him for having his own opinion in the matter. You’re the one being disrespectful.

Congratulations to Ellen and Portia, I’m glad to see they’re happy :) That’s all anyone should ask for, is happiness, no matter who you’re with.

Why ignorant? Just because they have a different point of view?

Then, should I warn you that you’re supporting a miserable and retrograde grandpa in his way to the WhiteHouse?

You know babe, I live in Spain, where same-sex MARRIAGE has been legalized, and everything seems to be working perfectly. You know what? I you don’t like what you see, then turn round your face. Make it simple.

People who agree with McCain seriously need a huge reality check. This is 2008. Get with the times. Homosexuality is not wrong or sick. People who think it is are. I feel sorry for all the narrow-minded people, you’re really missing out on life if you judge everyone, especially if you judge them by who they love. Ellen is in love with Portia. Now, if Ellen was in love with a man, then nobody would care, right? Well, why do people care that she’s in love with a woman. It’s so ridiculous that people care who others love. How’s it bothering you any? Everyone should be allowed to show their love, any way they want to. When a man and a woman are in love, they get married. Why can’t two men or two woman who feel the same, be married? Get your heads out of the Bible, which was written by a man, not “God”. And for God sakes, get the hell over yourself.

From Jane #21:
Get your heads out of the Bible, which was written by a man, not “God”. And for God sakes, get the hell over yourself.

This is what is wrong with our society!

the real tita @ 05/22/2008 at 12:34 pm

#19: you should be ashamed of yourself. You want respect for your own opinion but not for the other side. You have your opinion, other people have theirs. Why do you have to resort to namecalling to state your point? Does it make your argument sounder?

And if it works in Spain, good for you but this is America. The people here at least have some respect for tradition and some conviction.

Go Ellen. I can’t believe how narrow-minded so many people are in the LAND OF THE FREE. So glad I don’t live there.

wow 23 is that supposed to be ironic? i don’t know which America you live in but the one I do, “respect for tradition and some conviction” has been looooooooooong gone. if anything, America is more open minded compared to other nations. only the old crackers still can’t get our of their caves and thinks backyards.

McCain is correct, and finally, someone has the guts to say what is right. Ellen may be funny, but allowing everything just because someone wants it doesn’t make it right.

McCain 1 - Ellen 0

If there is a separation between Church and State, then we MUST look and treat everyone equally. As long as you are not negatively impacting society, whether you are short, fat, tall, thin, straight, gay,etc the government does not have any right to show prejudice toward an individual. We should all be treated the same.

I understand some people have different views on this subject due to their religion, but whether someone practicing homosexuality will go to hell, is not for you to decide. It believe that is God’s decision, it is our responsibility not to judge, but to treat others with kindness and respect.

Good job Ellen. I admire Ellen’s courage and her ability to bring up difficult topics, and still treat her guests with respect.

I LOOOOVE McCain!!!!

No, what’s wrong with society is you, sorry.

If someone doesn’t believe in gay marriage, that’s their right too. Don’t call them ignorant or narrow-minded. As you said it, this is 2008 so let everybody be free in what they believe in. Nobody should call another human being name because he/she doesn’t believe in gay marriage. How come you gays are so offended when you are called f…?

Your union is legalized so go, run and get married since that’s what you’ve all been waiting for. And please stop saying you’re normal, cause you’re not. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t concieve a baby naturally like a REAL woman and a REAL man.

And please stop comparing yourselves to black people.

McCain is right it’s NOT THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

annoxious @ 05/22/2008 at 1:16 pm

I think when people say “sick”, it’s more of a personal attack, however, while I believe that same sex marriage is wrong, by statute, personal attacks should not be a part of standing up for what you believe.

you know, if people like you didn’t believe in such morally wrong things our nation would be a little more respected today. you talk about how our nation has changed, so stop living in the past, well if someone doesn’t maintain some kind of boundary lines we are going to be living like crap. America used to have a little more common sense than this, haven’t you realized that God made us in order for man to marry woman, it kinda doesn’t work right when a woman marries another woman, hows that gonna work, if you get my drift. other people can do what ever they want it is a free country and we’re so blessed to live here, but sometimes when it comes to things like this we’re becoming too free. because this is just down right sinful and gross. but like i said it is a free country but ellen don’t put McCain on the spot like that, your just lucky he was soo respectful to you or else you would have looked like an idiot.

That is completly wrong and so stupid ellen is a idiot and is just stupoid how can she even say that it is right? i mean this is the same as the same sex marrage in cali that got passed. it is wrong and people know it. that is why they feel the strong need to defend it so strongly. so duh a marrage is suppost to be betwn a man and a woman. so McCain is right and she is so wrong.

Jane @ 05/22/2008 at 12:25 pm

People who agree with McCain seriously need a huge reality check. This is 2008.
>>>
I am sure you are the person who will be promoting beastiality or incestual unions next.

Justin111 @ 05/22/2008 at 1:37 pm

Marriage is “sacred”???

LOL!! I can’t believe anyone takes marriage seriously anymore because unless you have been living under a cage MOST marriages fail and end up in divorce. What is so “sacred” about that?

You all are just worthless idiots or bored soccer who probably lives in worthless fly-over states and has nothing else to do with your lives than blog.

To all you idiots who know nothing about the bible and think homosexuality is equal to murder: Did you know that it is a sin for women to wear pearls? Did you know it is a sin for us to eat pork? DID YOU KNOW THAT PRE-MARITAL SEX IS A BIG SIN (I’m sure you’ve all done it)?

LETS BAN PORK, PEARLS AND PRE-MARITAL SEX!! IT’S A SIN!!

IDIOTS.

McCain for President!!
I like Ellen though.

Who are you fools to “disagree” with homosexuality? What does it concern you??

Why are you “agreeing” and “disagreeing” with people’s lives for ***** sake?

Ew,

McCain is so old and ugly!!!!

Well, Let me start by saying for everyone who asks why we believe in One Man and one Woman Marriages. Ladies and gentlemen We agree with 3,000 years of recorded history but we disagree with the Supreme Judicial Court of California. The main reason is because we are worried about the family and the future of our civilization. A lot of arguments say well we won’t adopt kids but once we pass same sex marriage it will go farther and farther. I don’t know about you but I don’t want two Same sex Parents.

Hats off to John McCain and Ellen for having the courage to be transparent and, yet, respectful of one another.

We love to watch “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and can’t imagine not being able to. That’s why we support our friends in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and neighbouring countries who want to be able to watch the show on a German TV channel and therefore signed the “TEDS in Deutschland” online petition.

http://www.ellen-forum.de/petition_teds_support/gbs-gbook.php?start=1

I am shocked that people here are comparing homosexuality to murder, bestiality and incest. That is so unbelievably ignorant and couldn’t be further from the truth! I’m amazed that people still hold such narrow minded views.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ellen here.

#30 - are you saying those who cannot conceive are not “real” men or women??

a lot of these comments really make me sad at how close minded so many people are. to call somebody “sick” for being gay . . . wow.

as for the marriage is sacred argument, do those of you are against gay marriage for that reason also dispute “quickie” marriages that last only a few days? i mean britney spears & jason alexander wasn’t exactly a shining example of how sacred marriage is. or dennis rodman & carmen electra. or larry king’s many marriages. or j-lo. or any other countless number of celebs who change spouses almost as often as they change their underwear.

in a world so full of hate and bigotry, i think we should celebrate love in all forms and be happy for those who have found it.

Judging others- ? not the same as using good judgement! We should use good judgement in life, teaching, accepting, decisions.
It is important for our government to use good judement! Mankind has the right to use good judgement ! You would not put a short person on a job to reach high places- nor would you put a tall person to go into a small opening- etc etc! We would not ask a child to do an adult job!
This again, is not judging!!!!!! Yes, God only has the job of judging the “soul”, but gave mankind the right “Earthly ” right to judge, make
the right decisions for the safety and good of our people. My judgement would be to not give gays and lebians the right to get legally married!!!!! you are not equal as Men and Women, no matter what you say- even if you say I am narrow-minded- I will remain narrow-minded! God would be the JUDGE for that !

From Coco - “As far as I’m concerned, you can’t concieve a baby naturally like a REAL woman and a REAL man.”

First, are you implying that gay men are not REAL men, and that lesbians are not REAL women? Talk about ignorant!
Second, there are many REAL men and REAL women, who happen to be straight, that are infertile and cannot have children. What do you say to those straight couples who are infertile? They cannot get married or have the same rights as fertile straight couples?! Seriously?
Third, there are plenty of gays and lesbians who have children of their own. Many of them (before they came out) were in relationships with the opposite sex and had kids with them. Gay doesn’t equal sterile, but I guess you didn’t know that.

“And please stop comparing yourselves to black people.”

The point is that ignorance is ignorance. Being gay is not a choice nor a sin, just like race. You just don’t want to accept the fact that homophobia is as bad as racism, because then you’ll have to accept that you’re a bigot too, just like a racist! Boo hoo.

Justin111:

Have you even read the Bible? Please stop talking about something which you obviously know NOTHING about.

#44 - Lauren, while I don’t agree with same sex marriage, I think if someone loves someone then that should be it. Obviously, there should be lines drawn (incest, for an example) but as long as someone is in love and happy, it shouldn’t matter.

Some of these comments, from both sides of the spectrum, are so ridiculous. I’m open-minded, and I agree with McCain, but I will gladly listen to someone else’s opinion and take it into consideration. Learn to do the same, whether you’re for or against something. You don’t have to change your mind but be respectful.

Megan fox rocks @ 05/22/2008 at 2:29 pm

I love McCain , and I agree with him need more men like him

no same sex marriage

Let me guess….all of you who like mccain and are against gay marriage live in middle america and other small towns? You should try getting out more.

on the right side @ 05/22/2008 at 3:00 pm

Ellen is just like every other obnoxious liberal, shoving their views down everyone’s throat. I’m not a McCain supporter, but he showed alot more class than Ellen showed as the host.

Ellen, great job today and for putting McCain in his place. Why can’t people just let other people live their own lives. My God, people, this is the United States of America, the Land of the Free. God loves us all. McCain is from an old generation and as in his words a “very, very, very, old man. His thinking his very, very, very old. What’s wrong with society is people that cannot adapt to change and be happy for others. ELLEN YOU AND PORTIA RUN TO THE ALTAR AND GET HAPPILY MARRIED. IF I WAS THERE I WOULD HAPPILY BE YOUR MATRON OF HONOR. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ellen is gay!

If a thief or rapist or sicko is hetereo,he gets the equal rights. If u are gay, you are not getting a ****!. What is wrong with these people? I don’t get this! Good for Ellen!

I hate john mcCain….stupid republican. Vote either clinton ot obama, not for mcCain the old republican.

I think Ellen presented her view being respectful and still getting her point across. I commend her for that.

I love Ellen and think her relationship with her partner is her business. BUT, marrige is between a man and a woman. God created Adam and Eve…NOT Adam and Steve!!!!! To the person who says middle America is who supports Mc Cain… Yes, we do. GO MCCAIN!!!!

#47,

aNoN YES *****.

I am a Christian have read the bible and I can pinpot to what I’m talking about if you’re that stupid.

Question is, have you read the bible? Idiot? Women are forbidden to wear pearls, dumb ****.

I bet you’re one of those idiots who believes other sins like pre-marital sex is not wrong.

I bet you’re a fat ass too. Gluttony? It’s a deadly sin. Do you throw your bible at fat people as well, idiot?

sacred means “devoted or dedicated to a deity or to some religious purpose” and the biggest argument it that the Bible states that being gay is wrong. Do you remember the Bible? Do you know even anything it says? Its the *very* reason our country was founded. The Bible sanctifies the marriage between a man and a woman. So firstly, you are dead wrong (and sound about 12 years old) and secondly, why would a same sex couple want to be married in a sacred ceremony under the same exact God that condemns their lifestyle? (but I guarantee He loves them just the same as you and me!) If not a religious ceremony, then a civil ceremony which is a ‘non religious ceremony’ is in otherwords..a CONTRACT.

All right, let’s think about everything that’s been said.

The State should be caring about their citizens’ behaviour, not about their personal lives. And it’s deeply true that we gotta respect each other, but let’s put an example to illustrate the idea:

Ellen respects Mcain’s point of view which is absolutely disrespectful. Why should people who respect those who don’t accept them be PUNISHED by not being allowed to get married?

I respect those who have a religious view on the whole. Yet, why wouldn’t they respect me? Didn’t - suposedly - Christ told the humanity to be respectful?

That’s the question.

You are on drugs if you think marriage is “sacred.” I suppose the idiot quickie marriages (Britney comes to mind) and quickie divorces.

Oh, how sacred.

MOST MARRIAGES END IN DIVORCE. The idea that marriage is sacred is just a joke and is a thing of the past.

Look at the countries in Europe where gay marriage is legal. Have they fallen apart? Um no. Has God struck them with his wrath? They all function normally because gay marriage harms nobody. Who are you to tell anyone that they shouldn’t be married? Why are you in their business?

And another question, sweetie there are far more sins as stated in the bible yet homosexuality is the only one people are up in arms about. It makes no sense.

To #59

At first, voters were supposed to be men (yet just a few of them). Later on, people discovered that this concept - being allowed to vote - could also be used involving women.

Concepts change as humanity does. That’s something we gotta ACCEPT.

if a room had to be divided- men on one side, women on the other
Would “Ellen know which side to sit on???? I f “Ellen” had been on the “Titantic” when it was sinking - Women and children go first ??

This is to all “Gay’s and homosexualls! what catagory are YOU!

Mccain is using good judgement!

From a black woman that does not compare my rights as black OR as a woman to those of people who CHOOSE their lifestyle… MCCAIN ‘08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

crazydaisy @ 05/22/2008 at 5:27 pm

McCain is a douche bag

# 64: You are no different than Isaiah Washington. You should know what ignorance and hate cause, yet you promote it.

It’s been proven scientifically that homosexuality is not a chosen lifestyle but in a human’s DNA.

You’re a Christian??? Yeah right. My ass is perfect. Thanks. :)

I’m not trying to get into your dispute, but if you are a Christian, as you claim to be, then you would know that we are no longer under the law (the old covenant) Jesus fulfilled the law and established a new covenant. I don’t like getting into religion on trite message boards, but your posts were not accurate. Have a pleasant day.

i’m sorry but i would have to disagree with mccain. whoever said that marriage was man and woman in the first place? sure, the bible says so, but how do we really know? homosexuality has been going on for years and years. i’m glad cali passed same sex marriage. gays and lesbians are humans just like everyone else. they should be treated respectfully as anyone else. it’s a time for change in this country.

WHOO! YOU GO, ELLEN! ;-)

okay, let me get this straight. i’m not gay, but if two women or two men really love eachother & are commited to eachother who are you to say it’s wrong for them to get married?? just like Ellen said, our love IS all the same. we are all the same & we all deserve the same rights. one can’t control their feelings for another person. if you don’t support gay marriage, you don’t support women & blacks. just because you don’t understand something, can’t explain something, or have different opinions - doesn’t mean you should get in the way of other people’s lives & rights. some people think that gay is just a trend, which is just pure ignorance! I despised McCain the first moment I saw his old, idiotic face. Just another Bush. Is this the kind of man you want to lead our country?? This new Bush needs to get out of people’s lives & keeps his “opinions” & “disagreements” to himself, if he wants to lead our country. who needs an ignorant idiot as our president? you want to ruin our country & its reputation, go right ahead; but don’t say I didn’t warn you. McCain is gonna win, because the same Republican dim wits are gonna vote for him… just like Bush. I thought Americans were/are better than that. ………………………………………………………………………

I just wish… that people in this country would just wake up & smell the roses for once. In this case, society. Homosexuality has been going on forever, it isn’t a “2008″ thing, as some of you have been stating. It ashames me that I’m a citizen of a country full of ignorant, yes ignorant, people. People who basically don’t understand anything that’s different from their beliefs/opinions. We have to learn to push all these boundaries aside & learn to respect each other, beliefs & all. These people didn’t do anything to us - it’s what we do to them. We don’t have to agree w/ everyone/thing, but we need to put ourselves in other people’s positions. Stop being selfish & give our country back the reputation it deserves, or go find another country where people “agree” w/ you!

That being said, CHURCH marriage should be between man & woman. But state is a whole different story. I’m a Christian, & do believe in marriage between man & woman - but that’s just me. I respect everyone, which is what a true American is supposed to do. ….

I just needed to get that all out. Am I invading one of your beliefs?? ;-)

-Fin

Christian freaks are so damn stupid.

I am against gay marriage. But I have never voted based on that belief. That issue isnt part of my decision. I vote for who i think is qualified and will make the best president. I will be voting McCain ‘08.

Go Bush and Go McCain!!!

I personally believe homosexuality is a natural part of evolution even in Jesus time/ Plato/Socrates days homosexuality was accepted it is only in modern times it was looked up in disdain.

We made homosexuality a sin not God! Also the fact is the world is over populated because men/women embarrassed by their sexuality marry and have kids thinking it is the right thing to do…. we have to realize that not all of us were meant to have kids.

On that note while I do think gay people should be allowed to marry I certainly do not condone it being done in ANY church for the mere fact that it will be going against people’s thoughts on religion and outright being disrespectful.

I wonder if Ellen asked Oboma and Clinton about same sex marriage it would have been interesying to see what they would of said McCain said what he beleived everyone has their own opinion and that is good

McCain is wrong! because they all say this things because religion says it’s wrong! well again religion condoned slavery and women being put down by their husbands, and then we understood that that was wrong!
I totally agree with Ellen!!
In fact in 2006 they found the ‘gay’ gene, you are born that way, you don’t BECOME gay! that’s just who you are… and they should respect that, instead of having the church developing a vaccine! to CURE!! homosexuality!

I’m so glad the Supreme Court in CA change their minds!!! it;s amazing and I’m happy to live in this time in history!

I think people who talk trash and call other people names like “Christian freaks” and “ignorant” are the real hypocrites and ignorants. I thought EVERYONE was entitled to their own opinion. And everyone(!) includes conservatives and Christians. Just because their ideas don’t agree with yours doesn’t merit calling them disparaging names.

I don’t agree w/ same sex marriage. I’m happy McCain stood by his beliefs and stated them in a calm and respectful way. I also love Ellen, she’s such a great host. And I’m glad she is able to express her own opinions and views respectful. I can listen to her thoughts and ponder and understand some of her points. But I can also disagree w/ her overall view.

Come on people, we’re all grown-ups in a civilized era and society. Please don’t stoop down to calling people names just because they don’t agree w/ you.

i love ellen!!
i think it’s okay for us to disagree, you know.
we all have different opinions.

old old McCain, he’s dust. if he seriously becomes president, i can assure you tax and gas prices will skyrocket. its time my boys and i come back home. just cuz this old cracker may become the next president doesn’t mean he should ****** control our lives. we don’t have a say to get out at this point and have to do what we’re told!!! ****! its bad enough damn bush messed everything up and now he’s trying to cover up for his ***** by making Iraqis look bad. next target: IRAN. and they aren’t even ****** related to any of this pile of *****! nor was Iraq! people, please listen and open your eyes! PLEASE VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRAT PARTY!

oh and all you people who think we’re doing a grand job by staying at war; we’re not. we are forced to kill innocent civilians everyday. including women and children and old folks alive. DAMN i am so angry i seriously hope one day US gets the taste of a real war. then we’ll see how happy you are when you have to live in fear of dying every ****** day!

people don’t always believe what you read or hear in the news. its controlled by our gov. if you want the real deal, hit up the search engines online and you can find many actual footage and commentary’s done by the boys. we’re all miserable and many are downright getting sick and we just wanna come home and spend time with family and friends just like all your comfortable asses get to do. why should we have to be the ones to suffer? so please don’t vote for McCain!

Well done Ellen! I love her. I wish her all the best

Aaaaahhhh Ellen just shut up already! You got what you want for now. But i will say this . Marriage between two people of the same sex is no where near the same as marriage between a man and a woman. It also has no correlation between what went on with women and blacks in the past. It is stupid to even say that. I won’t go into the bible thing but for heaven’s sake God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Adam or Eve and Eve. So just shut up about being like everybody else, you can twist it and mess with it as much as you want ,it won’t make it right.

Gay marriage should be leagal all over the world. As Ellen said, love is all the same. I don’t think marriage has to be a man and a woman, that’s not what it’s about. Marriage is about loving someone and wanting to be with someone every day for the rest of your life. So we’re gonna discriminate homosexualls for wanting something that to us is obvious. This is just a waste of time, while people are starwing in the world and being killed in war, we’re sitting here discussing something that is a human right for everyone: To love your partner in a marriage wether or not your gay or straight!

Just a few things I’ve gotta mention here…

~bonnie… I hate to have to be the one to inform you, but your view on homosexuality seems to be a bit… well… misinformed.

First off…
Being gay is not the same thing as being transgendered. Gay men and women know what gender they are and where they stand without hesitation.

Secondly…
Being transgendered is not a matter of “Oh my god what gender am I???” it’s a matter of a person’s gender not matching their sex and being “born in the wrong body”.

~To those who are grossed out by gay sex…
Many glbts are pretty grossed out by the mere concept of straight sex.

~As far as McCain is concerned…
I fully respect his opinion and his stance on same-sex marriage. The problem I have with it is not in his beliefs, but with the fact that he has and will continue to allow his personal religious beliefs dictate how he has dealt with (and will continue to deal with) public policy. I hate to say this folks, but it seems that a lot of you have forgotten that our government is “for the people”. Presidents and legislators are not just for those who elected them, they’re supposed to protect the interests and rights of ~all~ American citizens whether their personal beliefs mesh or not.

And before anyone goes off the deep end and trots out the old standards, I’m talking about legal activity. (Also, while it may have been “illegal” a few years back, the law was deemed unconstitutional)

~To those arguing that it’s “a new time”… I don’t exactly agree with that assessment. GLBTs have been around since the beginning and haven’t always been shunned by society. Many cultures along they way respected (some even revered) members of the GLBT community.

Yes, I’m aware of the argument that claims all the civilizations that embraced homosexuality (to any extent) basically imploded. But it’s not accurate. For instance… Rome and Greece… they didn’t fall due to homosexual behavior, they collapsed because they were “true democracies” and therefore doomed from the start due to the nature of true democracies. Native Americans (and other aboriginal tribes around the world) were nearly wiped off the map in some places by outsiders who, fearing the unknown/difference between them deemed them savages and heathens because they weren’t Christians (yes, there were other reasons, but the Christianity aspect played a large role)

~Semantics plays a *huge* role in the discussion of matters such as same-sex marriage. Many get into arguments and refuse to consider semantic discussions without realizing that in discussions such as these, it is imperative that one knows exactly what they and their counterpart are talking about. To understand the meaning behind and connected to the words that we use in these discussions can, at times, make *all* the difference. Depending on where/how you live(d), your understanding of a word or concept can have an entirely different meaning for someone else and I believe that is what leads to many of the extremely heated debates that occur when talking about such sensitive issues. For instance, for one who considers themselves pretty religious, “marriage” may be nothing less than holy sacrament while someone who either isn’t the same religion or is not as “devout” may consider it to be both a religious rite and a legal contract (for lack of a better word at the moment) of sorts… while yet another may see it as strictly a legal contract between two individuals.

I agree with Ellen 100%.
I also think it has a lot to do with how you were brought up. If you were brought up in a religious Christian family, obviously Christian morals will “rule” your life, so to speak (do not take that literally). If you were brought up in a non-religious family on the other hand, you’ll be a lot more open-minded. That’s just the way it is.

I think everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. I personally think homosexuals should have the exact same rights as “the rest of us” (I don’t like saying that, because I do not think they are any different, love is love, what’s the difference?), but I that doesn’t mean I can’t respect the views and opinions of people who don’t agree with me.

I just don’t understand the problem. A religious Christian person (for example) believes that marriage is sacred and that it should be between a man and a woman. Then great, marry a man if you’re a woman, or marry a woman if you’re a man. Fine. But why is it your/their/anybody’s problem if a woman marries a woman, or a man marries a man? What’s that got to do with you or anybody but themselves? Really, they don’t mind you getting married, so why should you mind them getting married? That’s just strange to me.

To me, love is love, no matter what. If a man finds love to and from another man, then so be it. There is nothing abnormal about that. It’s simply two people getting along, finding support and friendship, love and compassion in one another, just as any couple. The fact that they’re both the same gender does NOT make them strange.

All I’m saying is that if you think homosexual marriages are wrong, then don’t marry someone from the same sex as you. But don’t let it stop others from marrying each other and showing their love to the world, just as you want to with yours.

And by the way, the only thing in the Bible actually “written” by God is the ten commandments. The rest was written by people. I do not mean to be disrespectful, but that’s the way it is.

I think that everyone has a right to there opinion on the issue. Christians must remeber that once before they were hated and oppressed and thought to be crazy. You dont have the right to deny others the right to get married because of your beliefs. Remember that the world goes throught different phases. Maybe in a 1000 years there we be a new religion and you will be oppressed again . what goes around comes around. For people who think that being gay is unnatural there are many spieces of animals that have homosexual relations (like dolphins for example). If God did not like the gay thing so much, the animals would not do that. You can not get more natural then that. But there are alot of people who will not listen or take the time to research these trues they are the ones that are ignorant and pig headed.

Go Ellen!
:]

Gee - I can ramble on most topic - but religion and homosexuality - I avoid these topics. I mean I have a lot to say, but I truly avoid these topics.

My fault of course !

To signature Bonnie:
That is so not the case. It’s not about being a man or a woman or both for that matter, it’s about loving someone in the same conditions!

I’ve never understood the objection to homosexuals or homosexual sex. I guess I’ve never understood it because I’ve always known I don’t have to participate in it if I don’t want to and because I believe that people should generally (as long as it doesn’t involve children, unwilling partners, partners incapable of making this kind of decision - etc.) do what is pleasurable to them. If it is not hurting you - and it’s not, because you’re not doing it and you don’t have to see it - why care so much?

As far as gay marriage goes, I figure if these people want to jump into the marriage pit and become part of the 50% of the failed ones, they are welcome to it! Again, why do you all care so much? A “feeling”? It’s a subjective feeling to an objective set of facts, the most interesting fact being that someone else’s homosexuality doesn’t affect you in any way, shape or form. It says nothing about your personal morality, which is the only morality you can rightfully be interested in.

And let’s talk about this “it’s unnatural” thing. It’s not unnatural. Our closest primate cousins engage in homosexual play and have long term homosexual relationships. So do some birds, worms.. you know, a bunch of animals other than us. (Here is a nice National Geographic link. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0722_040722_gayanimal.html

But you can do your own research, some of which is against thie thesis of the posted article.)

Since they are incapable of what we consider thought, it must mean that - guess what - their actions are NATURAL. And what do you mean when you say it is “unnatural”? Do you mean that it is “artificial” that it is not a real choice on the part of the people making it to be in a sexual and romantic relationship of someone of the same sex? How do you know? You’re not making the decision or experiencing the pleasure. You have no objective basis for these claims you are making.

But again, natural. So, it was natural for me to be drawn to boys. In fact, I was drawn to boys so early on, that it never occurred to me to be attracted to girls. I didn’t make a decision to be attracted to boys - it came “naturally.” But that same desire came naturally for my cousin, Ricky. Ricky (Richard) loved boys too! So early on that it could not possibly have been a decision he made. It was NATURAL. Just like I’ve always liked boys, Ricky has always liked boys. (And no, he wasn’t molested by some older relative, teacher, church elder or anything like that. The dude just liked boys from the time he knew there was anything to like about them. How is that unnatural? If your sexuality is within you - which I argue that it is - how can its expression be unnatural? I’m not saying that it can’t be twisted or perverted by abuse in some cases - but this can’t be true of all the gays worldwide, can it? Of course not. So explain - where does it come from, this desire in very young children to be with one sex or the other?

And let’s talk about sin. I happen to be an atheist and therefore don’t believe in sin per se. I am a moral person and I live by what is called the “Golden Rule” - basically do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Fine. What is all this Christianity if you cannot live by its basic tenets? You know that someone else’s sin does not become your sin. If you believe that this is a sin, err on the side of justice and let them sin and give account for it to whatever god they worship. What does it have to do with you and your relationship with your god? Again - all this interference for no good reason. Just do you.

And frankly - and I hope any gays posting to this don’t take this the wrong way, which is usually a sign that the person is about to make some statement that’s biased or bigoted, which this is, but in a “positive” way - gays make good neighbors. The property values rise. Violent crimes in neighborhoods with a high percentage of gays generally decline faster. I’m not saying that they’re all sweetness and light - like any population, you have your jackasses and evil people - but listen… Gays have been with us this whole time. They are not going away. They are not bad people. As a matter of fact, you are related to one, probably more closely than you realize. It baffles me truly, deeply and honestly baffles me why people care so much about someone else’s sexuality.

I love Ellen, and detest Portia. But I wish them all the best. I want them to have a beautiful wedding and a wonderful marriage. BTW, “marriage” is whatever we want it to be. That’s the great thing about language: it can encompass whatever the speakers of it want it to encompass. I decided that this word, “marriage” encompasses two men or two women who want to get married. I’m dropping “gay marriage” from my personal lexicon, because it’s duplicative. Thanks.

Amen Merry…
Gay marriage is abnormal, immoral, and downright disgusting.

Jen DC get a life loser!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jane you are sick @ 05/26/2008 at 10:26 pm

Jane you are the ignorant one here. It is 2008 but doesn’t mean we are going to accept homosexuals, perverts, pedophiles, prostitutes and all the other evil and call them normal and give them rights! You are sick!

Here is a story about McCain and his FIRST wife that I doubt will appear in any US publication. Devastating, I would say.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1024927/The-wife-John-McCain-callously-left-behind.html

SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE PEOPLE!!!!!!

Some people say “being gay is a moral sin.” Yes, your RELIGION believes it is a moral sin. However, America is not a theocracy and not everybody here is Christian or Catholic or whatever religion you are. In America, or in the America we are supposed to live in, Church and State are separate, therefore just because one persons particular religion believes something is wrong or a “moral sin” does not and CAN not mean that that particular something should be outlawed. The bible says that eating shell fish is a moral sin, so should eating shell fish be outlawed? No, we would all find that utterly ridiculous. But according to some uneducated and ignorant people in the U.S, our laws should be based off of the bible. Thus, according to their standards, eating shell fish should be outlawed, along with all the other ridiculous laws written in the bible.

Open your eyes people. Everyone deserves equal protection under the law, so why should the law discriminate between heterosexual and homosexual couples? The law does not discriminate, only people do. We do not have a right to impose our particular religion’s morals onto the rest of society.

I hope you all realize in your hearts the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people are all still PEOPLE and deserve the same rights as every other American.

BabyGurl05 @ 10/15/2008 at 2:44 pm

Ellen states “We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same.”

Ok, i agree with her when she says that we are all the same people, cuz we are! But when she states that “our LOVE is the same”… that kinda gets me. I Dont belive her love for Portia is the same love i have for my “mate.” The love is different between a man and a women compaired to the love betwwen a women and a women or a man and a man. The fact that I know i can have kids and my partner is the father and not some “sperm doner” is a different kind of love all by its self. The fact that i can get married to my (male) partner and not have people lookin at us everytime we walk out of our house is a wounderful feeling!! Gay/lesbian couples are NEVER gonna know what that feels like…

all you ***** really piss me off.
seriously who are you to judge and discrimate against people.
and if your christian only God can.
so use ur frkn brains if u even have any.
pathetic *******.
hypocrites writing complete ****.
