OlderDaughter of Stephen Curtis Chapman Killed
The five-year-old daughter of contemporary Christian music star Steven Curtis Chapman was killed last night by a car driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the Chapman family’s Williamson County home in Tennessee.
Maria, Chapman’s youngest of six children, was playing in the driveway when she was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser. Several members of the Chapman family witnessed the accident.
A statement on Chapman’s website says, “Maria was rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, transported by LifeFlight, but died of her injuries there.” Fans have been leaving their messages of condolences on Chapman’s official MySpace page.
Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth, co-wrote a song entitled “Maria” for his 1992 album, The Great Adventure. You can find the lyrics here.

Vool. Jared made no reference to the song being dedicated to the child. They just happened to co-write a song together, Stephen and his wife which was called Maria.

This is one one of the saddest things I’ve heard in a long time. Her poor family and her poor, poor brother. I’m sure they are relying on their faith at a time like this.

my heart has achec for this family since I heard this morning….as a mother of two children, I simply could not imagine such a tragedy but I also believe the promise of my Saviour and Lord that he would never leave me nor forsake me….And he would not put ANYTHING on me I could not handle. With his grace and mercy I pray for strength for this family to endure such pain and loss. God has a plan and will be glorified through this.
this is a terrible tragedy. Something that this family will only get thru with faith. This teenager (son) will have the greatest guilt of all. My mother was the driver of a vehicle in which their friends 3yr. old was killed. As tragic as it is her mother sang in our church the next Sunday, I climb that mountain. Harboured no hard feelings. God promised to comfort in our time of need. I believe there is always a purpose in our lives. How we get there is not in our hands sometimes. Their son can and will live with this terrible accident. I pray for their comfort and healing.

Oh my heart is just broken. There can be nothing like the pain of the loss of a child.

The Chapman family is very close with mine. ANd Maria was the nicest and caring little girl ever. She would always want to have fun. I found out last night that this terriable thing happened. They said they are planning to make a public apperearence to speak about it. But please pray for the family. They loved her dearly.

I also thought of Steven’s beautiful song, “His Strength is Perfect,” written so many years ago to comfort others - may it comfort him and his family this day and all the days ahead. Steven was so kind and comforting when the student shootings happened in Paducah, Kentucky, several years ago at his old high school, and sang at the funeral of some of those kids. I know his heart has broken for others many times, just as the hearts of so many of us are for him right now. Let’s all keep the family in our prayers for comfort and strength, for the loss of Maria and for the pain and anguish of his son.

I went online last night to watch the conclusion of American Idol because my Tivo had cut it off — and there was a headline about this on my default home page. Sure puts things into perspective.
Although I don’t have a lot of SCC’s music, we share a church background, and my husband is a major fan. Our hearts are aching for this family, and our prayers especially are with the brother.

I send my condolences to you and your family. I have listened to your songs since I was 12 and when I hear the great adventure it makes me think that we all have an adventure to take along way we will have some good times and some bad times but us as christians have to suffer to reach that great destination we call heaven because in the end it’s worth it. I know that with this tragedy is hard to cope but don’t give up on your faith the Lord will prevail this hurt and make it brighter in your lives with a great miracle!

My heart goes out to the Chapmans. I have not been able to stop crying since I heard about this tragedy. I myself lost my one and only son when he was 9. He was killed by a hit and run drunk driver. I know what the family is going through. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember His Strength is Perfect. I cannot imagine what Maria’s brother is going through. This is so horrible. He is also in my prayers. My heart goes out to him.

This is unbelievably sad. I know a family that lossed a child in the same manner. It was devastating for them. I’m glad to know that SCC and his family have a strong faith in God’s love. That will take them a long way in healing.

“I will be here” was a song that helped me through many difficult times. We can never make sense of tragedies such as these…our prayers thoughts, and love will be here for Stephen and his family.

Tragedy is still tragedy the bible states there is a time for all things and the death of a daughter no matter how in line with God’s plan is still sad and is NOT a time to be feeling “lucky”. Your in my thoughts and prayers. Its hard to lose a loved one in an accident. I lost a loved one in an accident also, you just wish you had that one last moment with them to say good-bye. We just never know if we’ll see our loved ones from one day to the next. He has a plan for us all and someday we’ll all reunite with our loved ones in heaven. Its not your sons fault at all, if that hadn’t happened her life would have ended someother way. God knows when our time on earth must end. He now has a beautiful angel. Just cherish your son and love him all you can. Hold on to your memories!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how it feels to lose someone you love. My little cousin, 13 years old, was killed in a car wreck earlier this week. She was practically my sister. God will be with you through this time of tragedy and pain even though it may seem like He is so distant. Y’all are in my prayers.
I grew up listening to your music and i just want you to know that your music made a huge imact on my life. I can’t even count how many concerts i went to. I know it’s going to be hard to get through this but remember that God is always there for you, even in the darkest hour.

Hi. I don’t even know the Chapman family but I want to send out my sincere condolences for the loss of Maria Chapman who will be dearly missed I’m sure. This will surely take a while to overcome but Maria is in a better place now. In God’s hands.
There are lessons for all of us in the Steven Curtis Chapman double tragedy where the youngest son accidentally kills the youngest daughter. How do you deal with such grief? My heartfelt prayers go out to your whole family. My oldest son ran completely over my youngest son when he was 3 and my son lived. Sometimes in times like this we cannot see past the pain and hurt, but there is something good God will make out of Maria’s death. My heart goes out most to her brother, my eldest is changed forever because of this as will he be as well. I pray for peace that passes all understanding. God be with you!
