Happy Birthday, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt!
Proud parents Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie celebrate daughter Shiloh’s second birthday today.
Shiloh is the smallest and youngest of the Jolie-Pitt family and was born in Swakopmund, Namibia exactly two years ago. She has three older siblings — brother Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, and Zahara, 3. Shiloh will soon have twin sisters, when Angie gives birth later this summer.

In the end, it was entirely appropriate that “What Just Happened” got the last flicker of light from the projector at this year’s Festival de Cannes. It’s about a troubled movie, starring Sean Penn, that plays to a rainy Cannes within a real-life troubled movie that closes a rainy Cannes. This in a year when the fake film’s star (Penn) served as president of the official selection jury, and the real film’s star, Robert De Niro, presented the Palme d’Or — all during the wettest Cannes in years.
It’s art imitating life imitating art and so on. For the film, which was recut after failing to sell at Sundance (in retrospect a big mistake taking it to the wrong festival in the first place), it was a re-premiere on the closing night in Cannes, and its several-minute standing ovation must have been sweet for the filmmakers, director Barry Levinson and screenwriter Art Linson, who based the film on his own autobiographical book of life in the producing trenches.
Even though movies about Hollywood are often considered too inside for mainstream success, this one has lots of knowing laughs and some teriffic performances, including De Niro in the Linson-like role and especially Canadian actor Michael Wincott as a tantrum-throwing auteurist director. Should this film find decent distribution and a release before the end of the year, Wincott’s performance is the kind of comic gem that could draw awards attention on its own.
So even on its final night, Cannes ‘08 continued to provide some intriguing possibilities as we move forward.
As noted in our preview piece, “No Country for Old Men” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” got lots of traction last year coming out of their competition slots in Cannes ‘07. Together they went on to garner 12 nominations and four Oscars for Miramax, including best picture for “No Country.”
This year another Miramax film opened the festival, but Fernando Meirelles’ “Blindness” did not generate the same kind of critical enthusiasm and was quickly forgotten as the competition accelerated. The film, which opens Stateside at the kickoff of awards season in September, will have to shed its shaky Cannes image quickly if it’s to have any shot in the upcoming awards races. Julianne Moore’s brave lead performance could be a contender depending on how the best actress race shapes up this year.
One nominee in the best actress race this year is clearly Angelina Jolie for Clint Eastwood’s dark and mesmerizing “Changeling.” Even though she didn’t win a prize in Cannes, losing to one of those quirky, completely unexpected jury choices we so often see in fests (Sandra Corveloni, who plays the mother in the Brazilian youth drama “Linha de Passe”), her fierce turn as a mother who goes after a corrupt police department when her son is kidnapped is sure put her back into the Oscar hunt for the second year in a row after an Oscar nomination eluded her for 2007’s “A Mighty Heart.”
Like “Mystic River” in 2003, Clint’s fifth competition entry and fifth loss (other than a consolation prize for, well, being Clint), the critically praised “Changeling” should win widespread awards talk and numerous Oscar nominations. One film company head (and academy member) with absolutely no corporate ties to the studio (Universal) told us, without a doubt, that a November released “Changeling” would be a major contender for picture, actress, director and many other categories.
Complicating matters is an embarrassment of potential Oscar riches, for not only Universal, but “Changeling’s” production company, Imagine and co-producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. They also have Howard’s sensational film version of Peter Morgan’s (”The Queen”) Broadway play, “Frost/Nixon” opening December 5th and directly positioned for maximum for award impact.
Howard could, and likely will, find himself in competition with Eastwood in the directing category. His funny, complicated and fascinating film (we’ve seen it – it’s completed but so far avoiding the fest circuit and bypassing election season) is brilliant, even matching his Oscar-winning “A Beautiful Mind.”
Both Frank Langella as Nixon, and Michael Sheen as David Frost, the man who conducts a series of TV interviews with the former President are equally superb re-creating their Broadway and West End triumphs and both are Best Actor candidates unless the studio decides to try and squeeze one or the other into Supporting which really seems unlikely. Langella won the Lead Actor Tony for the role.

Report: Angelina & Brad Rent French Chateau
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have signed a long-term lease for a chateau on the French Riviera, according to reports.
The couple, who have four children and two more on the way, signed a three-year lease on the 880-acre estate called Chateau Miraval, where neighbors will include Johnny Depp and David and Victoria Beckham, according to the French newspaper Nice Matin.
The estate, reportedly valued at $70 million, comes with its own vineyard, olive groves, lake, moat, 20 fountains and even a forest to help ensure privacy.
“They’ll have total privacy, which is exactly what they’re after,” a source told E! Online. “No one will ever be able to get pictures of them relaxing at home, it’s just impossible.”
At the Cannes International Film Festival, Jolie, 32, who is expecting twins this summer, told reporters that she was thinking of giving birth in France, and that French is the “second language” in the family’s home.
A rep for Pitt and Jolie had no comment on the estate.

The show suggested that they did purchase it, and will/are soon occupy it. Also it states that it’s “worth” $70mil, but that doesn’t mean that’s the price they paid, that’s if the story is true. Anyway, it’s so beautiful, and I just love the privacy it will afford, “if true.”

And then of course, out came little Shiloh two years ago today and she was a perfectly healthy baby. Oh yeah, also, those veins of hers don’t bother her or hinder her a bit. In fact, she’s said her best feature are her hands. If she wanted to, she could have gone to have work done on her arms. Still, even with her veins, she’s still able to use her arms in the best ways possible, the best use of course being able to carry her kids. You go mama Angie. :)

Just finished reading an article about how obesity amongst children in America is stabilising in the New York times.
The most recent data is based on two surveys — one in 2003 to 2004 and one in 2005 to 2006 — that included 8,165 children ages 2 to 19. I was at CBB and saw this article about Chris O’Donnell traveling coach with his family. I found it interesting that he has 5 kids all under the age of 10: 8 and1/2, 7 and1/2, 4 and1/2, 2 and 5 months. Isn’t it funny that he is never criticized or made fun of like the Jolie-Pitts are because he has a large family?
For some reason this really aroused my curiosity, so I looked up some other celebs who have adopted. Specifically I was looking for ones with 3 adopted children (same as the Jolie-Pitts). Sharon Stone has 3 adopted boys, born and adopted in 2000, 2005 and 2006. Rosie O’Donnell has 3 adopted children born in 1995, 1997, 1999 and one born to her partner in 2002. George Lucas also adopted 3 children in 1981(daughter), 1988 (daughter) and 1993(son). Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw have a total of 7 children between them, 3 of whom are adopted. Kate Capshaw actually adopted one of them before her marriage to Spielberg, who subsequently adopted him.
Of all these celebrities, Angelina get the most criticism. She gets accused of being a serial baby adopter (wtf does that even mean?) and using children to “self-medicate”. Can the same not be said of these other parents? She gets vilified by those in the media and public yet Brad gets kudos for parenting the same children! Is he not a serial adopter as well for adopting Mad, Pax and Zee? I am not trying to criticize Brad. I just want to point out the double standard that exists.
I think the problem for some in the media and public lies in the origins of the adopted Jolie-Pitt children. They show these children no consideration whatsoever. It’s almost as though they are some exotic pets that Angie and Brad have taken in and are looking after. I’ll bet if they had adopted children from some poor Eastern European countries, there wouldn’t be such a hue and cry about the size of their family and how fast it is growing.

Also, if you were using your brain, logic would tell you that a 32yr old who got pregnant 3yrs ago without any medical intervention, would have no problems conceiving again. Put down those tabloids and read some legitimate publications. It will do your “brain” good.

But it seems to me Paris is smart enough to parlay her blond bimbo image into a good living - better than the most of us, doing presumably what she loves - partying. That’s not really different to being a Naomi Campbell who parlays her body and good looks to earn a living, doing what she errr, loves - modelling and beating up the cleaning woman.
Is paris any worse then naomi or linda evangelista or any of those so called “super” models out there? If not, why judge one woman badly. Why do we reserve our full contempt for Paris and not linda or christy or these other women who’ve done just as little or less than Paris has??

We have nuclear power, but it is NOT our primary source of Energy. Europe is almost entirely Nuclear. France especially is like 90%.
The United States is only 15% Nuclear, compared to Europe’s 80%.
USA’s primary power is Burning Coal, BURNING, can you believe it. I was shocked when I learned it. We Burn vegetable stock (parts we don’t eat) too.
The USA is about 65-70% Coal burning, just like China & India.
Remember all the Coal mines collapsing a couple of years back and all those people died and were trapped for a week, because we deregulated mining safety (cuz safety rules for workers is not capitalistic)
If you see an energy plant with smoke stacks in America, it’s coal.

Exactly. I dont understand why people are so harsh on Paris. She leveraged her name Hilton and make a living out of it. To me, that’s smart, and there’s nothing wrong with that. She isnt peddling drugs. Pictures in the tabloids show her dancing at clubs, leading people to think she’s decadent. But magazines FAILED TO MENTION she actually got paid for going to parties. She once said she got paid 1M for waving to the crowd in Austria. Owners of those clubs in Vegas paid her to party there. She said she hasnt asked her parents for money when she turned 18. The only thing I wish Paris would do is to learn to give back. Other than that, I like Paris.

There’s a nuclear plant about 25 miles from where I live. It’s been there for may 20-25 years and I’m just old enough to remember what a hassle it was to get approval to build the plant. It’s in a neighboring county and the county I live in doesn’t get much of it’s power from that plant. We’re still like 90% coal burning.
To be perfectly honest I know why there was such a tough time building the plant - Chernobyl. One of the profs I live with came here from Russia. He and his family were evacuated from the Chernobyl area. In the 15+ years he’s been here he’s lost his mother, father, brother, several cousins and wife to cancer caused by the nuclear accident. I was talking to him one day not too long after his wife passed and he told me there’s not a day that goes by that he’s not tempted to move away from here to someplace where a nuclear plant isn’t so close by. I’ve lived here all my life and I can’t say the thought doesn’t occasionally go through my mind about how screwed we’ll be if there’s ever an accident at that plant.
And that’s why America will be on fossil fuels for as long as we can - because nobody wants to live next door to a possible Chernobyl.
LOL Correction - that should be “one of the profs I WORK with…” not “live” with. Misha drives me fcuking crazy. I’d kill his nutty Russian ass if I had to live with him. He knows everything about everybody and his favorite phrase is, “Well…let me tell you THIS about THAT!” And 30 minutes later you’re still wondering - a)WTF is he talking about; and b) when the fcuk is he going to shut up.

Shi’s so full of light and love, she’s just a little honey, and very, very funny. I think I’m recognizing some of myself in that one — she’s going to be a little bit of trouble!

It’s a unique situation where I am lucky that I can take big chunks of time off. I can also insist that my kids be brought to the set. I’m able to balance because I have a lot of that unusual circumstance. I do have an amazing man in my life who is such a wonderful dad, and makes raising the kids that much more fun and that much easier to do because he’s so hands-on as well. But at the end of the day, like all moms, you realize you get through it because you love your kids, and you love your life, and it’s pure joy, and the balance is just found.

Before I met Brad, I always said I was happy never to have a child biologically. He told me he hadn’t given up on that thought. Then, a few months after Z came home, I saw Brad with her and Mad, and I realized how much he loved them, and a biological child would not in any way be a threat. So I said, ‘I want to try.’
After having Shiloh, and hence a baby that looked like her parents, Angelina decided that perhaps it was important for Mad to have a brother who was originally from the same place as him.

Sharon Stone’s “karma” comment is having an instant effect on her movie-star status in China.
The 50-year-old actress suggested last week that the devastating May 12 earthquake in China could have been the result of bad karma over the government’s treatment of Tibet. That prompted the founder of one of China’s biggest cinema chains to say his company would not show her films in his theaters, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m not happy about the way the Chinese are treating the Tibetans because I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else,” Stone said Thursday during a Cannes Film Festival red-carpet interview with Hong Kong’s Cable Entertainment News. “And then this earthquake and all this stuff happened, and then I thought, is that karma? When you’re not nice that the bad things happen to you?”
Ng See-Yuen, founder of the UME Cineplex chain and the chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, called Stone’s comments “inappropriate,” adding that actors should not bring personal politics to comments about a natural disaster that has left five million Chinese homeless, according to the Reporter.
UME has branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou, China’s biggest urban movie markets.
During the brief interview, which has also surfaced on YouTube, Stone also said she cried when she received a letter from the Tibetan Foundation asking her to help quake victims.
“They wanted to go and be helpful, and that made me cry,” she said. “It was a big lesson to me that sometimes you have to learn to put your head down and be of service even to people who aren’t nice to you.”
Stone’s words created a swell of anger on the Internet, including at least one Chinese Web site devoted solely to disparaging her comments.
“To Sharon Stone’s comment, it’s unlikely that we will respond,” said a woman who answered the phone at the Foreign Ministry in Beijing. She refused to give her name or position.
After-hours phone calls and email to a representative for Stone were not immediately returned Tuesday night.

That’s what Angelina Jolie said to a Swedish reporter, on the red carpet in Cannes.
No, she was not referring to the twins she is now carrying. Jolie wants more children, after these arrive. She already has Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Shiloh. The first three adopted, the last her daughter with very significant other, Brad Pitt. And Brad is, of course, the proud papa of the coming double blessing.
Jolie is ravishing these days. She always looks better pregnant, not concerned with keeping a movie-queen figure. I assume also, that her occasional lapses into skinniness reflect a woman too busy with four kids to eat properly. And Brad? He looks … utterly content.
I think this might be a case where we all got it wrong. It seems a hundred years ago that Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston. Then Jolie came along and “stole” him away. Angelina was just beginning her work with UNICEF and had adopted only one child. She was still seen by many as a wild creature, the self-proclaimed dabbler in bisexuality, the sister who kissed her brother too fondly (in the media’s eyes) and still the woman once wed to the endearing but proudly odd Billy Bob Thornton; each wearing the other’s blood in a decorative vial around their necks.
It was slightly clear that part of the reason for her divorce from Billy Bob was that he did not share her emerging passion for philanthropic globetrotting. And, he didn’t want more children, he said. Those from previous marriages were enough. But after he and Jolie split, he did have another baby. Men!
Insiders and those who could read between the lines of various interviews knew that Brad was not content being a golden boy to Aniston’s golden girl. Still, the couple might have continued had he not been swept up by Miss Jolie.
As the Brangelina coupling continued, and as Jolie plunged deeper into charity work and adoptions, everybody thought the bloom was gonna fade. Surely this is not what Brad had bargained for? How exhausting. How un-sexy.
Well, ha, ha, ha to everyone! Jolie’s desire to adopt, procreate, to raise millions for ravaged Third World countries, to use her fame for the greater good, seems to be an aphrodisiac for Mr. Pitt.
I’m so glad my initial cynicism has been proved wrong. If they break up tomorrow, I fall back on my Gilda Radner defense: “Nevermind!”

Asner - former model, former E! Entertainment correspondent and still-reigning wife of director Steven Soderbergh - builds her modern noir tale around Dani Hale, a writer for the TV forensic show “Flesh and Bone.” When Dani discovers that her slow-to-propose director boyfriend, Dave, has been making it with starlet Chloe Johnson, she vows payback.
Along the way, Drew Barrymore pops up at a party, trotting around “with no shoes, kissing everyone hello on the lips” and prompting two guys to whisper that, now that Barrymore has turned 30, “she’s about to expire like spoiled milk.”

CANNES (Hollywood Reporter) - For anyone numbed by the endless stream of political films in recent years, the past two weeks in Cannes have offered a response. The trend is over. And it’s not.
The films screened on the Croisette ranged widely in quality, tone and theme. But except for “Adoration,” Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s drama with a suicide-bomber subplot (one of the film’s few weak points), the festival’s biggest selections were free of forced topicality.
Instead, a new type of political film emerged — one that’s more ambitious, subtle and, potentially, more commercial. Best of all, this new class addresses the rickety and charged state of the world without appearing to do so.
From “Che” to “Changeling,” in movies as disparate as Ari Folman’s animated Israeli documentary “Waltz With Bashir” and the visceral IRA docudrama “Hunger,” these new films follow a pattern: the maverick or crusader revolted by a system who in turn revolts against it.
“Changeling’s” Christine Collins (Angelina Jolie) suffers the trauma of a missing child only to turn her rage into a one-woman crusade against corrupt Los Angeles authorities. Argentinean Che Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) succeeds in an armed communist revolt in Cuba, while in Bolivia he hopes “our failure will inspire others.” In “Bashir,” Folman tries to change the present by understanding his past, setting out to recover memories he’d blacked out as an Israeli solder in the Israel-Lebanon war of 1982. Jailed IRA icon Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen’s “Hunger,” brutally beaten by jailhouse guards, acts through inaction; he embarks on a hunger strike that amounts to a slow-burn suicide to ignite the next generation of rebels.
None of these films mentions Iraq or the modern political world explicitly. They don’t need to. By examining such subjects as military unrest, totalitarianism and power’s tendency to corrupt, the parallels are everywhere. These are the same themes, after all, inherent in such movies as “Rendition,” “Stop-Loss,” “No End in Sight” and countless other contemporary takes: Characters inhabit a world in which they are frustrated by the decisions of their leaders and their own inability to do anything about it.
But in this new crop, characters do a lot less despairing and a lot more mobilizing, often to great effect (if also at great personal cost). You don’t have to agree with all the ideologies or causes to feel moved by the stuff.
Crusader pictures are nothing new, of course. Elia Kazan was making them a half-century ago, and since then movies from “Gandhi” to “Erin Brockovich” — along with filmmakers like Ken Loach — have portrayed the underdog’s struggle against the status quo.
But coming as they do now — a bunch at once, set in four continents and helmed by such a diverse group of directors — suggests the possibility that there’s something in the ether.
It’s telling that all these movies are set in period; the most recent, “Bashir” and “Hunger,” still take place more than 25 years ago. If we can only digest atrocities like war after they’re long past (see “Platoon” or “Shoah”), then the inverse also might be true: We can more easily digest current harsh realities if it’s packaged as something from the past. That these films are putatively about other subjects and eras don’t make their messages about the current world any less relevant; it simply makes it easier to process.
There’s reason to think these new films will meet with more commercial success than their predecessors.
While the previous crop laid out a hopeless situation, anatomizing all that went wrong, the new class shows how it’s possible to make it right. If Americans aren’t going to political movies because they already know how bad things are and don’t need another reminder, perhaps they’ll go to be reminded of how good things can be.

Namibia: Namibian Helps to Rebuild U.S. School

Albertina Thomas took time off this past summer from her busy studies to give back to her adopted community of New Orleans by volunteering to rebuild a school damaged in the 2005 hurricane, it was announced in a press statement.
Thomas, originally from Keetmanshoop, has been studying and working in the United States for the past 10 months as a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow - one of the most prestigious educational exchange programmes in the world.
She expects to complete the final phase of her fellowship in HIV/AIDS Policy and Prevention, at Tulane University, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in July.
“My major area of interest is HIV/AIDS training and education. During my Humphrey year, I am focusing on HIV prevention through public health education and training, and monitoring and evaluation of education and training programmes as a concept that will help to evaluate training,” Albertina said enthusiastically.
The study areas Albertina is focusing on are Public Communication and AIDS; Community Health Education for Behavioral Change; and Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS training programmes.
She is a qualified registered nurse in the employ of the Ministry of Health and Social Services and has become intensely involved in community work, as well. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day this year, she volunteered to help rebuild a school, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005.
She has also worked on other community projects with the church she attends.
The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship programme brings accomplished professionals to the US at a mid-point in their careers for a year of non-degree study and related professional experience.
Fellowships are granted competitively to Namibian professionals with a commitment to public service in both the public and private sectors, specifically in the fields of planning and resource management, public administration, agriculture, and health and nutrition. The programme places the greatest emphasis on obtaining practical knowledge that will be useful in Namibia.

Studios: Less Risk, Less Reward
Paramount Pictures’ highly anticipated fourth installment of “Indiana Jones” brought in an estimated $151 million at the domestic box office this holiday weekend, extending the studio’s winning streak that began earlier this month with the blockbuster “Iron Man,” which has made almost $500 million world-wide since its May 2 opening, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The early summer hits for Viacom Inc.’s Paramount are expected to continue next month with “Kung Fu Panda,” a DreamWorks Animation SKG film that Paramount will release. The trio of films buttress the studio’s argument that it has rebounded under studio chief Brad Grey and is prepared for the widely expected departure later this year of “Indiana Jones” director Steven Spielberg.
However, the films also reflect a reality of today’s major studios. These days, an abundance of outside financing for Hollywood movies means that studios often don’t always fully own or control the films they distribute — an arrangement that limits both their risk and the money they can make, even from a big hit. Marvel Studios, a unit of Marvel Entertainment Inc., for example, owns “Iron Man,” and DreamWorks Animation owns “Kung Fu Panda,” and those studios reap most of the profits. Paramount gets a fee for handling the distribution of the finished films — about 8% of revenue in the case of “Kung Fu Panda.”
And although Paramount and George Lucas’s Lucasfilm Ltd. jointly own “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” it will perform much like the other two for the studio because of a deal that awards most of the profit for the $185 million movie, if there is any, to the talent, not the studio. Paramount receives a 12.5% distribution fee.

My hubby is going to get the operation for …. DEVIATED SEPTUM!!! LOL!!! I will observe if his nose will somehow look different after the operation! However, unlike X, he got one of these pointy French nose—I think his nose is very beautiful (LOL), very straight and absolutely in no need of correction. In another words he has a nose that X would die for LOL!!
i’ve seen liz smith in person,she’s old wrinkly,with a fake hair,kind of almost bald,and she got this huge hairdo,but it shows her scalp!

In the next issue of Harper’s Bazaar, George Clooney’s sand-loving girlfriend Sarah Larson gets the profile treatment.
What follows is a list of things we learned by reading it:
· Sarah Larson was once on Fear Factor, where her crowning achievement was “eating” a scorpion. (When, in fact, she put it in her mouth then spit it into a bucket, which one can only assume is how she eats all her food.)
· She toured the country following the band Phish, making bracelets and sandwiches to trade for gas money. (Although Harper’s fails to mention what she traded for spending money.)
· She studied microbiology (pot?) at Evergreen State College (pot school) and worked in the school’s lab (presumably making pot).
· In 2002, Larson moved to Las Vegas to be close to her ailing father. Who lived in Palm Springs. 300 miles away. Because family’s always there when you need them, sort of.
· After working at a homeopathic medical company (need I say pot?), Larson “discovered” that she could make a lot more money working at the Playboy Club. Yes, just as Columbus discovered the New World, so Sarah Larson discovered that jiggling her junk pays well: “It’s funny, you go into cocktailing and you’re making a thousand dollars a night.” Yeah, that’s what they call it…. cocktailing…..
· Larson had a boyfriend when she first met Clooney (apparently while cocktailing) but had totally lost that chump by the time she tracked Clooney down at the Vegas premiere of Ocean’s Thirteen in 2007. Hooray for happy accidents.
· She was attracted to Clooney because of his work in Darfur. Not his wealth, or fame, or good looks. All she could think about while wrapping her cooch around a pole in Vegas was, “I just want a man who cares about the struggle of the Sudanese people.”
· George has introduced Her Arm Candiness to the Dalai Lama. We’re sure the holy one took well to, “Cool robe thingie. It looks yellow, but it’s kinda orange too. Do you like Rock of Love?”
· She was scared to leave behind a steady income as a cocktail waitress to focus on modeling. Because giving up your ****** job can be tough when a movie star’s taking care of you. And at almost 30, it’s never too late to pick up a career like modelling, right?
· Larson has taken to following The Secret to get what she wants out of life. Hopefully there’s a chapter about nailing down your movie star boyfriend before he gets bored and puts you back on the plexiglass stripper platform where he found you.
