Selena Gomez: No Sex Before Marriage!
Selena Gomez, star of the Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, plans to practice abstinence until marriage, reports Extra.
The 15-year-old tween sensation, who’s on the fast track to becoming the new Miley Cyrus, has declared she won’t be having sex until marriage.
Selena declared, “I said, ‘Dad, I want a promise ring.’ He went to the church and got it blessed. He actually used me as an example for other kids. I’m going to keep my promise to myself, to my family and to God.”
All of the Jonas Brothers practice abstinence and wear purity rings.

Well all you people who say ’she’s never been in a committed relationship’ or ‘when she gets in a committed relationship’…what if part of her plan is to NOT get into a relationship like that? Or to not get into one so deep that it would comprimise her promise? That’s my plan. Dating is kind of pointless. If God wants me to find a man to marry, then He’s going to give me and the man He has planned for me a way to find eachother and fall in love. And His way won’t include things that will force me to comprimise my promise to Him, myself, my family, and my future husband.

how does saying this equate to acting “high and mighty” as so many of you are saying? this is their belief.
and to answer the question of why they need to tell it to the world and not just keep it to themselves: it’s because they know that being in the position they are, they can change the way people think. they know that their fans look up to them, and that they can influence thousands of people. they are simply choosing to influence them in a positive direction as opposed to negative.
this is a very GOOD thing they are doing, and nothing to be made fun of or laughed at. i love how people ridicule stars and call them ***** and whores, and now when we have some mature people in hollywood, they get insulted as well. so ridiculously hypocritical. like they seriously can’t win with you people.

My thoughts exactly, Go Sox. It is all very well to make promises but to make a public declaration like this, me thinks it is foolhardy. People will remember and hold you to it. I say, think carefully before you commit especially in one so young. It’s so easy to pay lipservice but to follow through is going to be a whole lot tougher especially when there are lots of temptations out there. It is fine to be a role model but to stay a virgin until marriage is like declaring I’m going to get married at an early age, because that is exactly what happened to Jessica Simpson and countless others. Anyway, I feel this is a personal thing that should be kept private and nobody’s business whether you’re a virgin or not. It should not be worn as a badge. To me, if there is a genuine love between two individuals, whether they choose to refrain or not is entirely their affair and noone else’s.
We should instill in our children the sacredness of their bodies and who to share it with and to respect and value themselves.
why do you have to make such a thing about abstinence in the usa? i mean a promise ring and god and a promise to your parents…its like a kind of show and i don’t believe that they all won’t have sex before (or they get married very young). when you think you want to wait it should be your decision and not such a show. but its also quite strange that most of the disney kids are so close to god and the church and wear promise ring. is it a condition to start at disney? i think the kids will disprofit from this like britney.

I think it’s cheap and tacky when celebs make announcements about things like this. It should be a private thing and it just seems like they are using it as a marketing ploy to appeal to conservative America.
I think it’s fine when someone choses to stay abstinent until marriage but all this purity ring thing is ridiculous and those ceremonies where daughter promise to their fathers that they will keep their virginity almost seems like incest. A girl’s body and sexuality belong to her not her father.
It’s irresponsible too, kids see this stuff and it reinforces the notion that sex is dirty, they don’t tell their parents and are too scared to buy condoms, nature takes it’s course and they end up pregnant. People shouldn’t have to feel that sex is dirty.
I think it’s a very mature thing to do. Go Selena! :)

jamey, when you’re a 15 yr old a promise/purity ring is not a sign of maturity. This is a misconception, it is as good as a boy giving a girl a class ring or an engagement ring. Somehow, I don’t hold much value to engagement rings which are just like promise rings which may or may not hold out in the course.
I believe maturity comes with knowledge,wisdom and how you handle yourself in situations. It would have been more appropriate for Selena or Miley to say that at present and at their age they do not believe in sexual promiscuity or having sex with their bfs or they would hold onto something they feel is sacred as long as they can until they feel the right person comes along or out of respect for their parents. Maturity is knowing that you may be too young to appreciate sex and what it stands for and the consequences of unprotected sex.
