Angelina Jolie Celebrates World Refugee Day
Since early 2001, Angelina Jolie has traveled the world as a Goodwill Ambassador to UNHCR, The UN Refugee Agency. On World Refugee Day, she pays tribute to the forcibly uprooted and to the people who protect them.
Here’s what Angie, who is expecting twins with Brad Pitt this summer, says in her PSA:
“They have survived war, they have survived displacement, they have survived rape, they have survived hunger and disease. For those who have survived and for those who did not, we are thinking of you on this day.”

Angelina Jolie Records PSA for World Refugee Day

Angelina Jolie has recorded a public service announcement for World Refugee Day on June 20, to help raise awareness about the plight of millions of people at risk.
As emotive scenes of refugees flash on the screen, Jolie - who is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency - explains what life is like for millions around the world.
“They have survived war, they have survived displacement, they have survived rape, they have survived hunger and disease,” say the actress (who is expecting twins with Brad Pitt this summer). “For those who have survived and for those who did not, we are thinking of you on this day.”
The clip will begin airing on YouTube, Facebook and on the UNHCR home page Wednesday morning.
The actress and human rights activist is also planning to write an article for a major U.S. newspaper to coincide with Friday’s day of action. (World Refugee Day will be marked by events worldwide: London’s Trafalgar Square is being converted into a replica Darfur village, Rome’s Colosseum will be lit with the refugee agency’s logo, and, in Washington, D.C., Chicago Bulls basketball player Luol Deng will receive the Humanitarian of the Year award.)
Jolie, 33, first became attached to the work of the UN’s refugee agency during a February 2001 visit to war-torn Sierra Leone in west Africa, prior to filming Beyond Borders with Clive Owen.

Jared, thanks for putting up a thread about the refugee day, it is good to know that seven years after she was awakened to the need of those that barely made the evening news, her commitment to that cause is as strong today as it was seven years ago. Of course now it is cool to be called a humanitarian, but as always, she leads where others follow. Seven years is a long time to be actively involved in a cause and it seems with her she will be involved for life.
May her life continue to be enriched by love, joy and happiness, it seems as if the more she has given of herself the more she has been blessed with richness of life that is beyond financial and professional success, the sort of joy that her detractors have never had and may never know.

Angelina Jolie as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador has done so much for refugees worldwide from Africa to asia , Iraq and South America. She not only brings attention to refugee causes but financially helps displaced refugees fleeing from their country. Angie is so admirable, she doesn’t just talk but actually act more to help out. With her celebrity stature, she doesn’t have to after all these years but she actively chooses to be part of the solution of refugee oppression, displacement and justice. Her humanitarian work for refugees has given her life more meaning, purpose and humility. Kudos to the UNHCR and to Angie for doing what no other agency is doing for world refugees.

World Refugee Day: Iraqi musician raises USD 24,000 for UNHCR programmes
DAMASCUS, Syria, June 18 (UNHCR) – Acclaimed Iraqi oud (lute) player Naseer Shamma has raised more than USD 24,000 for UNHCR’s Iraqi refugee programme with a concert at the Damascus Opera House to mark World Refugee Day, which falls on Friday.
The take from Tuesday’s concert will be used to provide financial support for 150 of the most vulnerable Iraqi families in Syria over a month-long period.
Sold out within two days of tickets going on sale, the concert featured new music that Shamma created to reflect the situation of Iraq and Iraqi refugees. The programme included musical dialogues with other performers from Iraq; different styles challenging and mingling, with wisps of music evoking Iraq’s past.
“I am terrified that we are losing Iraq’s culture. Its sense of oneness, its true being,” Shamma said. “I am committed to supporting my people as human beings who have a lot of talent to offer and share.”
At times Shamma played his six-string oud with one hand only, a technique he developed to remember Iraqis who had their hands cut off in the late 1980s during the autocratic regime of the late President Saddam Hussein.
After playing “Good Morning Baghdad,” he called on the audience of 1,300 people to support UNHCR’s Iraqi refugee programme, which is facing a funding crisis. “This support is a lifeline. We all need to do our best to gather people, gather friends to support Iraqi refugees.”
In the past Shamma’s music has been compared by musical critics to a political rally without words. Despite the standing ovation and the warm media reviews, Shamma worried that his work advocating for refugees could affect his music and oud playing.
“I play my music with more conviction, more strongly, but my mind is preoccupied with the problems of my people. I will not stop, but I am challenged with finding the time and space for my practice, my music,” said the musician, much of whose work is inspired by his exile.
Shamma fled Iraq in 1993 when a friend warned him that his arrest was imminent. Several years earlier, he spent 170 days in prison followed by 50 days in hospital. He left Iraq the day of his release and headed to the Jordanian capital of Amman.
Since then, he has only returned to Iraq once – he brought a group of doctors to Baghdad in 1997 to help children needing surgery. Shamma says he will only return to Iraq when there is real democracy and no sectarian divisions. “I need freedom for people in Iraq,” he said after the concert.
As food and fuel prices rise and their savings dwindle, Iraqi refugees are becoming more impoverished. The worst consequences of this poverty are child labour, homelessness, children not attending school and early marriage. UNHCR’s financial assistance programme targets this vulnerable portion of the refugee population – currently some 4,000 families receive help.
Since the beginning of 2007, the falling value of the US dollar has led to a USD 6 million dollar loss of support for the UNHCR programme in Syria. There is a funding shortfall of USD 61 million for the entire Iraq operation, covering Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq.

World Refugee Day: Displacement in the 21st Century. A new paradigm
The refugee challenge in the 21st century is changing rapidly. People are forced to flee their homes for increasingly complicated and interlinked reasons. Some 40 million people worldwide are already uprooted by violence and persecution, and it is likely that the future will see more people on the run as a growing number of push factors compound one another to create conditions for further forced displacement.
Today people do not just flee persecution and war but also injustice, exclusion, environmental pressures, competition for scarce resources and all the miserable human consequences of dysfunctional states.
The task facing the international community in this new environment is to find ways to unlock the potential of refugees who have so much to offer if they are given the opportunity to regain control over their lives.
There are three ways we at the UN Refugee Agency are making this goal a reality: we protect, we build and we advocate. First, we protect refugee rights to safety, shelter and health, focusing special attention on the most vulnerable people, particularly women and girls.
Second, we work with our partners to build the capacity of refugees to fend for themselves once they are able to do so. And we work hard to find solutions so that refugees become self-sufficient as soon as possible.
Third, we advocate to draw attention to the plight of refugees and to raise the money necessary to get the job done. Our goal is to persuade people that it is our common responsibility to make a difference for those forced to pick-up and go through no fault of their own. Results on the ground show we are making progress. Last year, we helped hundreds of thousands of people return home. In Africa, bright spots include stepped-up repatriation to South Sudan and winding up of UNHCR’s operations in Liberia and Angola. In April, we held a major conference in Geneva and mobilized international support for the millions fleeing conflict in Iraq. We cannot do this alone. But with your support UNHCR can begin to turn the tide, giving refugees hope for the future and new opportunities for their families and their communities.

Terence Stamp Making Plans For ‘Wanted’ Sequel

These days, life is good for Terence Stamp. He gets to play the villain in “Get Smart,” everywhere he goes people want to kneel before Zod, and when I caught up with him recently, he was kicking back in a pair of pink Crocs.
“I’ve got ‘Yes Man’ coming up with the great Jim Carrey. Tom Cruise and I were blowing up Hitler for a long time in Berlin for ‘Valkyrie,’” grinned the tireless 69-year-old. “And, I got to say good morning to Angelina Jolie at 7 a.m. every morning on ‘Wanted’.”
Now, as that bullet-ridden action flick is getting ready for release on June 27th, Stamp is eager to drop a bombshell of his own: The filmmakers are already talking sequel.
“I play a character who’s called Pekwarsky,” Stamp explained. “He’s an enigmatic character who doesn’t feature a lot in the first one, but it’s something that’s written for a sequel.”
This might come as a surprise to Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, who created the “Wanted” comic books in 2003 as what seems like more of a self-contained story. While Batman, Spider-Man and the rest could seemingly go on forever, the tale of Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy in the film) always seemed more limited to a one-off film.
If Terence Stamp has his way, however, Pekwarsky will be returning to the big screen someday. And we can only pray that he’ll be wearing pink Crocs.

I googled the Congo last week and the first image was a rape scene. four big burly “soldiers” holding down one woman while another used what looked like a pair of scissors could have been pliers, to snip at her clitoris. It is one thing to know these things happen, it’s another to see an actual image. I have remembered this woman everyday since I saw the image last week.

My sister said the same thing when her young son was growing up and would not allow toy guns or GI Joe’s or any other kind of violent toys. he managed to fashion guns out of almost anything and she didn’t know what to do. Well he grew up well adjusted and does not carry a gun

The official trailer for Pitt’s upcoming film, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” has been released. In “Button,” Angelina Jolie’s other half plays Benjamin Button, a man who is born under “unusual circumstances” and ages backwards. Pitt, 44, plays Button through 80 years of his life in the movie, based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald story.
“Benjamin Button” uses technology to show Pitt’s reverse-aging that will “blow everything out of the water,” the actor’s co-star, Tilda Swinton, told MTV News in March. “I think it’s going to be extraordinary.”
Pitt also clocked his fair share of hours in the makeup chair – hence the receding hairline, wrinkles and used car salesman ‘do he sports in his “younger” years.
Cate Blanchett also stars in the movie, due in theaters in December.
Celebrations, lights, action: World Refugee Day 2008
GENEVA, June 13 (UNHCR) – From Australia through ancient Rome to the Americas, people around the globe will take part in the most ambitious and spectacular World Refugee Day (WRD) celebrations ever over the coming week.
With “Protection” as this year’s global theme, UNHCR and its partners, including governments, donors, non-governmental organizations, Angelina Jolie and other Goodwill Ambassadors and refugees themselves, will stage a wide range of activities, including light shows, photography exhibitions, film festivals, lectures, panel discussions, food bazaars, fashion shows, concerts and sports competitions.
There will also be quizzes, drawing and essay-writing competitions, tree planting, seminars, workshops, speeches, public awareness campaigns and poetry recitals, while UNHCR will recreate refugee camp life in around 20 capitals around the world.
Aside from these showcase events aimed at raising money and awareness in major cities and donor nations, more modest but equally enthusiastic events are planned at refugee camps and settlements for internally displaced people in the run up to World Refugee Day and on the day itself, June 20.
The High Commissioner will spend World Refugee Day itself attending a ceremony at the University of Nairobi after visiting Somali refugees in north-east Kenya on Wednesday and internally displaced Kenyans the following day.
UNHCR’s Deputy High Commissioner L. Craig Johnstone will lead World Refugee Day celebrations in the United States, attending a public ceremony and a film screening at the National Geographic Museum in Washington D.C. Johnstone will also present a Humanitarian of the Year Award to Sudan-born Chicago Bulls basketball star Luol Deng. The former refugee has in the past year become a key supporter of UNHCR’s ninemillion.org campaign, which promotes education and sport for refugee children.
Other celebrity supporters of UNHCR in the United States will be helping to promote the theme of protection. A special message from UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie will be released on video-sharing website YouTube around the world next Wednesday, while Deng will invite YouTubers and Facebook users to join an online campaign to “Give Refugees a Hand.”
The messages by Jolie and Deng are examples of how UNHCR is using social utilities and new media to reach out to the online community and to get people involved.

CORRENS, France (Reuters) - The new game in Correns, a village in Provence suddenly hit by media frenzy since Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie moved into a nearby villa, is to make up stories about the couple for the paparazzi.
You will be treated to a free glass of pastis if you can get a particularly silly story published, mischievous residents said, declining to be named.

For residents of Correns, the horde of reporters and other visitors keen to catch sight of the A-list Hollywood stars has provided entertainment — and some extra business.
“It’s bringing business because people are a little curious. For now there’s a lot of hype, it’s going to be good for the next few weeks and after that we’ll see,” said Onno Stijl, a chef at the Auberge du Parc hotel and restaurant. Less impressed are the local hunting enthusiasts, who say the Miraval domain is prime territory for boar and who fear tense encounters with the Pitt-Jolie security guards when the season starts on August 15.
“We have the proper authorizations and everything,” said a local hunter, pre-empting any possible objection to the annual shooting fest in the Miraval woods.

On family bedtime: laughing head.
Life & Style, meanwhile, hones in on Angie’s thoughts on second ex-hubby Billy Bob Thornton. “I still love him dearly and think the world of him, and I’m proud to have been his wife for a time,” she tells EW. The Bauer Bunch digs up an add that Angelina took out in Variety in 2004 (two years after she and Billy Bob divorced and stopped wearing vials of each other’s blood), which proclaimed, “I love your brilliant mind.” Throw in an “insider”/friend-of-a-friend-of-one-of-the-old-nannies saying that Angie hates it when Brad talks about his exes, add water, stir and you’ve got yourself a “Brad is reeling with jealousy” story!

someone here calls “go kill yourself” freedom of speech. this happens in a country that holds hundreds of detainees in a prison with no rights whatsoever human or otherwise and uses torture while interrogating them, but of course if a poor 3rd world country does the same it thunders and threatens. Too much politics? I am just surprised that a psychotic woman pushes a minor to kill herself becomes “freedom of speech”. Long live Uncle Sam!

all of you are missing allot of information that is missing from this article. if you look up older ones you will see the full story.
the family that had there daughter commit suicide did allot more damage then drew lori did. the idiot’s father drove donuts in her yard and pit the whole neighborhood against the drew family , that is NOT a ok thing. they had to set up security cameras to catch such offenses so they would have evidence to back it up. if you read the full story you will think megan’s family is more screwed up. i mean come on if i remember right the drew’s family was partly broke up due to the stress from these idiots.
i agree the whole thing from the beginning, the suicide and everything is a very bad thing for everyone but that is in the past, you can not only focus on that specific incident, the best thing to do is look at the side of both family’s… then post your comments here.
also if you read articles from when this topic was fresh, you will find megan tried suicide several times before and was having serious issues so it piratically anything could have possibly caused her to commit suicide.

I see everyones point of view but I have to say this woman deserves to pay for a crime in this nature. This woman is 49 years old and harassed a 13 year old girl because she believed this girl was some how harassing her daughter. This is what is being said on the news. Though why harass this girl playing as someone else and leading them on in such a hurtful way. To me thats not mature. For the actions this woman took she does deserve to be charged and punished for those actions. For being charged with murder that is most likely not going to happen or assisted suicide. Not saying she might not deserve that but logically its not going to happen. They would have to prove she knew the 13 year old girl would kill herself to have that charge stick. And for all we know she had no idea for sure on that. Also that is the hardest thing to prove. It is a terrible thing. Also that person who used the name Jim here yeah one comment to you; you have a sick sense of humor.

As far as her child being bullied, as a mother she should have acted like an adult instead of a child and handled the situation. She can throught out ANY excuse but it doen’t change the fact that her ( a adult ) actions lead to a childs death.
I don’t think a few years in prison would hurt her maybe she would finilly understand what her actions has caused.

What I find truly incredible in this thread is that there are people who claim this to be under freedom of speech. But the fact that this women falsely led this child into believing that “Josh Evans” had a particular love interest in her and there proceeded to disown her completely, just shows how messed up of a woman she is. It’s difficult to believe that society has come to the point where we as fellow human beings taunt each other to the point of serious psychological damage for no true reason at all, but unfortunately that is the current state of humanity. This woman should be convicted of the charges and locked away for life.

Talking with ‘Wanted’ Director Timur Bekmambetov

For his first film for an American studio, Kazhakstan-born Timur Bekmambetov scored not only a cutting-edge comic book series to adapt, but an enviable cast that includes rising star James McAvoy and Academy Award winners Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman.
But it was the setup for the comic-book series Wanted, in which cubicle-dwelling loser Wesley Gibson learns he’s the heir to the world’s greatest assassin, that most attracted the director to the project.
“I think the comic book is the first act of the movie,” says Bekmambetov, who admits the rest of the film is only tangentially related to Mark Millar and J.G. Jones’ Top Cow comic book. “He wants to change his life, he wants power to destroy things. The movie, the second part, provides the reason to be so bad.”
The director says what makes Wanted work is Wesley’s sad life and how he changes it. “He has no chance to escape,” Bekmambetov says. “It’s a very important starting point.”
The Wanted comic book was very obvious in its movie aspirations. Jones drew Wesley to resemble rapper-actor Eminem and Jolie’s character The Fox as Halle Berry. Bekmambetov says he felt free to disregard those casting suggestions and feels he has improved on them.
“I didn’t picture Eminem to play Wesley. I saw him differently,” he says. “I think Eminem is not representative enough for a big worldwide release. James McAvoy is going to be easy to identify with.”
McAvoy, whose star has risen quickly in Hollywood based on performances in such critically acclaimed fare as The Last King of Scotland and Atonement, captures the spirit of Wesley’s arc from loser to confident killer and beyond, the director says. “He’s still alive (at the start). It’s very important. It’s not like in Fight Club, where (Brad Pitt’s narrator) is really depressed and down - with James there is an optimism.”
The director, who still lives in Kazhakstan, was hard-pressed to come up with an influences for the high-octane sequences in Wanted, citing “every movie I’ve ever seen,” computer games and a few innovative visual effects films such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day and The Matrix.
The film’s extensive and innovative action sequences earned the film an R-rating, and prompted extensive discussions with Jolie, who convinced the director that the film would not show innocents being killed by the assassins.
But the biggest challenge of making Wanted was simply to finish the film, which took two years to make. Bekmambetov also says it was a challenge for him to get into Wesley’s head and understand him as “an American boy-man.”
Bekmambetov, whose previous films include Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch, says his next project will be announced shortly, though he says it will involve what he calls a “new type of the martial arts.” He’s also developing a number of projects, including a film based on Christian Gossett’s Soviet-themed sci-fi comic book series The Red Star.
Asked whether he’d consider returning for a sequel should Wanted be a success at the box office, Bekmambetov said anything was possible. “If the audience decides (there should be a sequel), we could figure this out.”

OK. I finally had a chance to read the 2 BIs. The first one is hard because there are so many people it could be, but I can’t come up with anyone that it totally fits. My biggest problem with this BI was that I just couldn’t think of an “A-list couple” that it could apply to. The only A-list COUPLE I really see, where both are A-listers on their own and together, are Brad & Angie! LOL! With other couples one of them is A-list and the other isn’t - TomKat, Will & Jada, Julia Robers & the Cameraman, Warren Beatty & Annette Benning, Travolta & Kelly Preston, Denzel & his wife, Nic & Keith, etc.
My guesses for the first would be -
1. Tommy Lee & Pam Anderson - since they’re a couple again and everybody knows she’s broke as can be and having a garage sale and doing a reality show and private gang bangs for money. And he hasn’t worked in donkey years. Motley Crue, even when they’re together and working, doesn’t exactly make a lot of dough these days. And his “solo career” was stillborn.
2. Tori & Dean - They’re doing everything they can think of to earn a buck and her mama ain’t coughing up a dime until she croaks…but…I can’t see him refusing to let her ask friends for money. More likely HE would be calling everyone they know AND cold-calling strangers asking for money. He’s unapologeticly greedy. So is she for that matter.
3. JLo & MA - I really can’t see it being them, but more talented people than JLo have blown their fortunes before, so anything’s possible. Besides…didn’t she say something about getting rid of the nannies so they could take care of their kids themselves? Plus, neither of them have worked since that half-assed tour when she was preggers.
For the second BI - I really couldn’t come up with anyone. I read the blog and saw some people were saying Brittany Murphy but he said the actress was “once at the very top of the world and has slowly, but steadily just about crashed to the bottom.” I can’t think of a darned thing that Brittany Murphy was ever in that would qualify as her having been “at the very top”. So this one has me stumped because the womenI can think of with drug problems and boyfriends with legal issues aren’t married…or aren’t actresses. But…it was funny that some people on the blog were saying Julia Roberts! ROTFL. As if she’d ever get the stick out of her ass long enough to get a drug habit.

Actually, the tabs aren’t that bad this week…the comment from the quack doc didn’t even make a cover…and the story about brad being jealous, it’s also a sidebar on a boring Britney cover that no one will buy…
…if the rags knew what was good for them, that story should end with hot pregnancy makeup sex and Angelina assuaging Brad’s irrational fears and jealousy…and..ahem…other things…. ((moan, thud)).
But rags are stupid. they’ll never publish what actually sells because the b*tched behind the scenes are jealous and petty. The masses suffer for the stupidity and selfishness of a few. The rags bottomline also suffers.
They just never seem to ‘GET IT’ — attn trash rags: women love a good romance (there’s a reason why ‘romance’ as a genre of fiction is #1 in the world) yet here you have a real life amazing legendary love story happening right before your eyes, and the ragloids insist on NOT making money off of it.
I’ll never understand it. Baffling.
It’s like the women behind these rags, are more interested in their own need to wave their tabloid bat around and they’re LESS concerned with writing intriguing juicy hot stuff about the greatest HW love story ever that women would actually BUY. The obsessed jealous haters moreso than fans. As is, right now, both are ignoring them.
I’m not surprised when on the weekend, usually sunday night… I hit the grocery, and almost ALL of the rags appear as if they haven’t even been touched. pristine and stacked high, while people ignore them.

Thanks JJ and Angelina for reminding us June 20 is the World refugee day. It’s amazing to me that all the big news networks like CNN, CBS, NBC,ABC and FOX did not even mention about this. It’s sad to think about millions of refugees with uncertainty future. I was a refugee once and I feel for them.

Thoughts on Iraq and Education

I spoke a few days ago at the Council on Foreign Relations about education in Iraq and would like to highlight some of my thoughts on this issue.
Every child has a right to an education. And conflict is not an excuse for us to ignore that right. If anything, it is THE time that they need it the most. It helps them gain a sense of normalcy. It helps them with their psychological and physical health.
Iraq has a history of high-quality education system. So these parents and this group, in particular, they’re very aware of what they’ve lost. When I visited refugees in Syria and displaced families in Iraq, the first question I always ask is, what are you most concerned about? What are you worried about? And I swear this is true. The first family I met was a family of 13. They were living in this tiny, little, dirty room and were about — they had, I think, three months left of rent. One of them found a job. It was hot. There were babies. The grandparents were there. It was a horrible situation. They were hungry. They were dirty. They were tired. And they said, we’d like to know about getting our kids into school.
And one mother even said, and I wrote this down, “to survive is nothing if you can’t be something or do something with your life.” And so this population that we’re talking about, this population in need is the future of Iraq. And so to reach them now, to help them deal with their trauma and to help them refocus their minds on a possible future should absolutely be one of our highest priorities.
The children we’re talking about… we need these kids. We, the international community, we need them to grow up and be doctors and lawyers and engineers and teachers because we need them to rebuild their countries, to stabilize their countries and to eventually lead their countries one day. So I ask you not to think of them as tens of millions of needy kids but this great force of tens of millions strong that, with support, will do amazing things.
