Jolie twins doctor admits to pre-birth pressure

NICE, France, July 14 (Reuters) - The doctor who delivered Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s twins over the weekend has admitted to feeling the pressure of dealing with one of the world’s most famous couples.

Oscar-winning actress Jolie gave birth to son Knox Leon and daughter Vivienne Marcheline by caesarean section at the Lenval hospital in the southern French city of Nice late on Saturday.

“For sure,” Michel Sussmann said, when asked on Europe 1 radio whether he was nervous before the operation.

“It wasn’t pressure on a medical level, because I have been practising for a certain number of years, but it’s true that there was pressure due to the couple’s fame.

“I was assisted by a team that was totally competent, so things happened as I wanted them to happen — simply and efficiently.”

Dozens of reporters, cameramen and photographers have been camped outside the Lenval hospital on the glamorous Promenade des Anglais waterfront to report on the birth.

Several U.S. networks added to their ranks on Monday in preparation for a news conference scheduled for Tuesday and the couple’s departure either by road or by air.

Nice Matin newspaper, which broke the news of the birth on Sunday, dedicated several pages to the event in its Monday edition and featured a photograph of Pitt and Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi signing the birth certificates. Continued…

Pitt, 44, was at 33-year-old Jolie’s side for the birth.

Vivienne Marcheline weighed 2.27 kg (5 lbs) and Knox Leon weighed 2.28 kg. Marcheline was the first name of Jolie’s mother, also an actress, who died of cancer last year.

“EXEMPLARY”

Sussmann said Pitt was “perfectly calm” during the operation and that the couple were “an exemplary father and mother.

“People of great simplicity, of great kindness since she is a patient who was totally obedient, very calm, very kind,” he added.

Jolie’s stay at Lenval hospital was far from ordinary, however. She arrived in late June by helicopter from the Provence villa where she and Pitt had been staying with their four other children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara and Shiloh.

And according to sources at the hospital, the fifth floor of the building was sealed off for the couple and their entourage.

Nice Matin has reported that the couple sold exclusive rights to the first photographs of the twins to an unnamed U.S. magazine for $11 million and would give the money to charity.

Jolie and Pitt came to a similar arrangement with People magazine in 2006, when it reportedly paid $4.1 million for North American rights to the pictures. Experts estimated worldwide rights to those images were worth $5-7 million.

Angelina Jolie had an eventful weekend welcoming in two new babies and also having twin films in the top ten. Her action thriller Wanted placed fifth with an estimated $11.6M, down 42%, boosting Universal’s cume to $112M. The actress also voiced Tigress in Kung Fu Panda further down on the chart. Jolie has now upped her counts for both children and $100M career blockbusters to six each.

this will give nicole kidman pressure for her baby photos they are going to be compared with vivienne like they did with shiloh and suri, i hope this does not happen

The entertainment press is already fighting with each other over who got the story right. Bauer’s In Touch, which has devoted what seems like every other cover to another Brangelina headline, is claiming the exclusive, being the first to report the news accurately ahead of any other news outlet. That In Touch’s website first reported Jolie gave birth to “twin girls,” then recanted that part of the story, might be of material interest to on-lookers. The magazine, however, will point out that six months ago it reported Jolie was pregnant with both a boy and a girl. (Previously, Star and OK! had reported Jolie was carrying two girls.)

After In Touch posted its report online, Us Weekly quickly “me too’d” with a “confirmation” that Jolie had given birth with its own website article. Then Extra, which had also posted online with the news, recanted its report, leading Us to also pull its story.

It wasn’t long before People posted the “exclusive” news on its website, though its source was Jolie’s doc, Michael Sussmann, who released a statement to the press at large, not just People. So its “exclusive” news wasn’t so much exclusive as it was simply stamped that way.

But once People pushed the story, the other hangers on followed suit; Us and Extra had their stories back online thereafter.

At least, Nice town and not whole of France is treating this new as a joyous one where most people can empathy while feeling a legitimate pride to be somewhat part of the party.

How is Angelina Jolie feeling two days after the birth of her twins? There was heightened speculation about her health Monday morning after she received a lengthy visit from her obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann.

Sussmann – who delivered Jolie’s son Knox Saturday night at 6:27 p.m., followed by daughter Vivienne one minute later – left his car double parked outside the hospital for more than an hour during the early morning visit.

The obstetrician arrived at the Fondation Lenval hospital in Nice, France, around 8:50 a.m. in his black Mercedes coupe. Parked partially across a pedestrian crossing, he left the hazard lights flashing as he went inside for more than an hour.

His previous check-up visits have usually lasted around 20 minutes and the doctor normally leaves his car in the underground garage, not double-parked on the road outside.

Later, as Sussmann emerged from the hospital, he tried to allay any fears about Jolie, 33, and her newborns. “They are all very well, very well,” he told PEOPLE exclusively. “Everything is okay.” E-mail | Share
