Provincial daily grabs entertainment scoop of year on Brangelina twins

NICE, France — The world’s entertainment press tripped over themselves, making embarrassing errors along they way, as they fought to be first to report the biggest celebrity story of the year - the birth of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s twins.

In the end, the scoop went to a provincial French newspaper.

“It was Brad Pitt who chose to give the scoop to Nice-Matin,” said assistant editor Olivier Biscaye. “He said to the doctor that the local media should be the first informed about the birth.”

Nice-Matin put one of its most experienced reporters on the story, Jean-Francois Roubaud, who was given access that the rest of the media pack camped outside the Lenval hospital could only dream about. While security kept out other reporters, Roubaud was allowed inside the hospital and given easy access to Jolie’s obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann.

So while the celebrity website In Touch Weekly almost got it right when it reported that twin girls had been born on Saturday, Nice-Matin knew better. The newspaper also spared itself the frenzied run-around of other news outlets following a false report at the end of May that the twins had been born.

“We knew we would be the first in the world,” said Christophe Caietti, editor of the Nice-Matin magazine section, which spotlighted the twin’s birth with a special insert on Monday.

Roubaud was given a heads up that the Caesarean section was going to be performed 30 minutes before Jolie went in for the delivery Saturday evening. The birth certificates show that Knox Leon was born at 6:27 p.m. and his sister Vivienne Marcheline a minute later.

“Rouboud spoke to the doctor around 10 p.m., 9:45. We had all the details: the names, weight, one boy, one girl,” said Caietti.

Nice-Matin broke the celebrity story of the year when it published news of the births on its website at 2 a.m. Sunday, four hours before the print version hit the newsstands.

The access also gave the paper other little exclusive nuggets, like Pitt’s first words after the twin’s birth, as reported by Sussmann: “Marvellous, wonderful!’ and the doctor acknowledging that the date of delivery had been moved up by about 10 days “for the mother’s comfort.”

As the major daily serving the French Riviera, the 280,000-circulation Nice-Matin has always made celebrity life an integral part of its coverage.

The magazine section this summer has featured photos of Naomi Campbell walking along the beach, Jerry Hall in St. Tropez and Faye Dunaway preparing for production of a film about the life of Maria Callas. But the general-interest newspaper prides itself on respecting celebrities’ privacy.

“Nice-Matin has always chosen not to play the game of paparazzi towards the celebrities who have chosen to live in the region. We respect them, and they do likewise. We let them have a peaceful life. This why I think Brad and Angelina have chosen to make this gift to Nice-Matin,” Caietti said.

Other celebrities with Riviera residences, including Elton John, Bono and the Edge, often give the newspaper access to events - on the condition they are for local publication only and not for sale, Caietti said.

On Monday, the paper featured a front-page picture taken by its own photographer of Brad Pitt (wearing the must-have item of the summer, a Panama hat) posing alongside Sussmann, Mayor Christian Estrosi and the Lenval hospital director, Bernard Lecat.

“Everyone wants that picture. It is not for sale. It would be very expensive, maybe not a million dollars, but very expensive. It is the only picture from the day,” Caietti said. “But we won’t sell it, out of respect for the family.”

So far, that is as close as the paper has come to the Jolie-Pitt family. But Nice-Matin will remain on the Brangelina story - with hopes of yet more scoops to come. They have already reported that an unnamed U.S. publication has paid US$11 million for exclusive rights to the first photo of the newly expanded Jolie-Pitt family, and that the proceeds will go to charity.

Once that deal is executed, Nice-Matin hopes to get a shot of the twins and their parents itself.
“And maybe an interview at their villa in Correns” nearby, Caietti said.

That’s very commendable with regard to your Aunt. The fact that she didn’t have one didn’t mean she couldn’t have USED one. Not everyone can afford nannies or want them. Some people’s lives are otherwise less complicated than the Jolie-Pitts as well. While some people just turn their kids over to nannies, here’s a BIG shock, some use nannies in a limited capacity. Angelina had said prior to the twins that none of the nannies stayed overnight, but that might change with the twins. Who is their right mind would lambast people for having assistance if they can afford it.

People you really need to think of something new to complain about, you should get tired of repeating over and over

1. Angie and Brad have nannies, boo who they don’t take care of their children on their own. Yeah i see the nannies taking them to the park, zoo, shopping, museums and boating all the time. NOT! Brad even said in an interview that changing the diapers keeps him humble.

2. Poor Shiloh is NEVER seen in public, you have to be blind not to notice ALL the pictures of her with her parents on the internet. Try doing a search of her name, if you know HOW.

3. Angelina called Shiloh a blob. Gwen Stefani said Shiloh and Kingston looked like TWO BLOBS when they met. What’s that? You didn’t KNOW that? Wow , i thought haters were well informed lol.

4. Angelina was on drugs. She experimented by her own admission, but so did a multitude of celebrities and probably YOUR parents. What? Not YOUR parents? Yeah right, like they’d tell you. The operative word is WAS.

5. Angelina stole Jennifer Aniston’s husband. You can’t steal a human being unless it’s kidnapping. Never heard that Aniston filed a missing person report. It’s over, done deal. You can’t move on because then you might have to stop hating or feeling sorry for Jennifer. It’s ok to sympathized because you lost a man to another woman or you know someone who has, but dang people it ain’t about YOU.

6. Angelina should forgive her father. How do you know she hasn’t? Because he hasn’t rec’d a phone call about the twins? Well, yeah that just proves your point doesn’t it ? NOT! You talk about the fans, but haters get into the business of people they DO NOT KNOW more than anyone. Try taking a look at your own life, you’d need to fix more than a few things.

7. Angelina adopted foreign kids for publicity, it’s just a show. That has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard a hater say. Tell that to the thousands of other American families that adopt kids from foreign counties.

8. Brad and Angelina want the publicity. Brad and Angelina HAS the publicity. They make no bones about USING what is essentially going to be there anyway. So what? Before them you probably couldn’t find Cambodia, Viet Nam, Namibia or France on a map. They are using their celebrity to benefit others. What are you using your HATE for people? Someone is going to make BIG money off the baby pix, why not THEM. After all the money will be used to benefit the less fortunate.

9. Angelina is crazy. Why? Because she experimented with drugs, her lifestyle and cut herself? Do you think she is the first and ONLY person who has done these thing? Do you even KNOW why people cut themselves? Try reading something beside tabloids and you might find that there is a whole other world outside it’s pages. Instead, you make her the epicenter of all your hate because beneath it all you either are fighting some frigging war for the x , you’re jealous or you NEED attention.

10. Angelina is not a box office draw or a good actress. The movies she made and carried between 2001-2007 grossed over 1 billion in total box office receipts. The movies she has current in the theaters for 2007 and box office hits and got great reviews. She has been diverse in her choice of roles, she has had critical acclaim and received an academy award. To those who should know, not haters, but people in the business, she IS a talented actress. All you need do is look at the people with whom she works; those are the people who know and speak highly of her.

She is not ONE-dimensional, but complex and above all TRUE to herself and her life’s goals. Don’t be a hate- monger. Goodwill never hurt anyone. Peace.

Well gasp right back at you. Did your Aunt work full-time at a very demanding job? Did she throw herself with all her heart into volunteer work that occasionally took her to Africa, the Middle East etc? and if so, did her hubby stay home with the kids like Brad does?
Bet the answer is NO. And if she had the money, bet she would have had help.

Oh, please. “Took care of them (the babies) herself.” What a crock of B.S. First of all the epidural has to wear off. Until that happens she cannot even walk. After that the pain of major surgery kicks in. She wouldn’t be doing much bending and lifting in that condition even with pain killers which she wouldn’t be taking if she plans to breast feed. They may have been in her room but Jolie wasn’t taking care of those babies Saturday night. Why do thay always put forth these lies to make her look like supermom? It is so unnecessary.
