OlderChristian Bale is Back as Batman
Christian Bale sits down with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer to talk about the upcoming summer blockbuster, The Dark Knight, opening this Friday. Here’s a snippet of the interview:
So much was made of Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker. It was such a dark role. In some way, perhaps, do you think in real life, it caused him to slip across some line of reality and may have had some role in his accidental death? Personally, I find it to be a complete lack of understanding of acting. I also find it very rude to try to create some kind of sound bite for such a tragedy. The man was a complex man, a good man, but you know what? I saw him having the best time playing The Joker. He was someone who completely immersed himself in his role. As do I. But in the end of the day, he was having a wonderful time doing it, He couldn’t have been happier doing it.

Good for him for letting Lauer know he wasn’t pleased with such a ridiculous question. This guy is an amazing actor and a class act. Can’t wait for The Dark Knight.

I don’t care how he HAS to spin it, it can’t be easy to be over-shadowed by a co-star and a dead one at that. No one will remember Batman for Christian Bale. I’m not a fan of either man, but that has to bite.

What a horrible question to ask.!! Good for Mr.Bale to answer in such a polite manner. I would have been speechless. He is right that Mr.Ledger’s death has been fodder for the press for too long.

That’s honestly a stupid question….I hate how people are trying to connect Heath playing the Joker to his death. He finished shooting TDK before he died - he was working on a new film and his death was accidental. Thank God Bale let him know that he wasn’t very pleased with the question!

He lived in Wales for a few years and then he moved to England, So its sort of mix between a welsh and an english accent..

Nice answer, Christian. Media are always trying to hype things way out of proportion or make things darker or more important than what they really are. Good for Christian for putting it back in perspective.

Bale looks so old for his age. He needs to lighten up cuz all he acts the same intense characters in his films.
Christian Bale ROCKS! He is an honest, thoughtful man who is an actor for the craft NOT the celebrity. Love him, love Morgan Freeman can’t wait to see it!
Matt didn’t ask the question, he asked Bale to reiterate what he had said before when people had asked the question. Bale wasn’t aiming his comment at Matt. Not everything is a battle.

he’s a little snippy–i love it.
he tries to maintain his american accent when doing press for american characters. but sometimes he slips into his british accent, which he was doing halfway here.

I wonder how Christian doesn’t get confused with all the accents he’s done. I love his Welsh accent and he shouldn’t try to suppress it with an American one. I can understand the marketing aspect, it’s just a shame.
Hey I just remembered that he’s just finished doing that gangster movie “public enemies” with Johnny Depp and that’s probably why his accent sounds odd. lol
I love, and always have, Christian Bale….what a phenomenal actor! Lowkey, humble guy who is all about the craft. I have total respect for him.

I watched American Psycho just the other day. I own a copy. It’s the one to make you rate Bale. I like it: DIE YUPPIE SCUM . HAAAA HA!
Some of the stuff in this interview was put interestingly by him back, pretending to be stuck on the very intention of the process of soundbite invention and that bat cycle makes him look really cool. So it’s ok to have that ‘pretending to be stuck on things’ vibe cos it’s a TV studio probably. He should grow his hair and look like Patrick Bateman again and stop trying to look so damn cool and a natural American.

And what’s with comments about how he should ‘lighten up’ with his choice of roles? What are you people smoking? He takes on roles that are challenging, and good for him.
Good to see someone responding to a question that has lingered around all year, but it could be understandable why people would think that, I was completely drawn in the character. But it’s just magazines trying to make up a big story.
Anyway, everyone should go see the Dark Knight, you won’t regret it, and I’m so glad I won tickets to see it last night, it was worth waiting through security.

Isn’t this the first Batman movie without Batman in the title? The movie is called The Dark Knight, and although Batman is the Dark Knight, the Joker is a huge part of the movie. God, it sounds like you’re the one on drugs.

Christian Bale is a very good actor and seems to be a nice modest guy. Such a fresh air in Hollywood.
I wonder what amount of money from Batman will go to the Ledger estate. I suspect his contract included a share in the profits. It might be a whole lot of money. Too bad he can’t be around to enjoy it. Sad. I just watched Brokeback again and marvel at how good he was in that. A truly GREAT actor gone forever. Tragic.
