Zac Efron was discovered BEFORE Hairspray. He made cameos in many series and played an important role in Summerland. Apart from that, he made movies as well (The Derby Stallion, Miracle Run, not to mention HSM). It is nobody’s fault if you have not heard of his work before Hairspray.

You accuse him of being the part of the “Disney Machine” and you claim that you dislike the fact that his face is everywhere. Speaking to Newsweek in June 2006, director of Hairspray Adam Shankman described Efron as “arguably the biggest teen star in America right now.” That’s why you can see him at different events and on magazine covers. He was chosen as America’s new heartthrob by Rolling Stone magazine. He has name in the industry, he is very successful. Naturally, many people want to work with him and be part of his success in a way.

I see no problem with that. As for his lovelife, I’m sure he is not the type of guy who flaunts his relationship on purpose. Zac and Vanessa have never chosen to talk about their sacred romance. It is not their fault that people are interested in it. They try to avoid “chatroom pandemonium” at all costs and rather not answer questions considering their private lives. And I personally like it that way.

I have never realized that Zac’s personality has ever changed. For me, he is the same laid back, clever and lovely man who he always was. I don’t know why you feel that he has lost his identity. He has become more professional, more experienced and more mature. You claim that you loved “his honesty and simple down to earth attitude” and I am wondering why you feel any different towards him now. When did he lie? When was he big-headed? When was he anything more than a simple Californian kid?

If the only reason why you changed your view is because he has become more successful then I suggest that you should think about it: he is 20 and a half years old, his career has just started. Of course, he wants to work as hard as he can in order to reach his goals. But the emphasis is on the word WORK. He has fought his ways to land in bigger and bigger roles, and recently started to leave his Disney image behind (MAOW, 17 Again). What more do you want? Respect his efforts, in my opinion.

But prepare yourself because HSM3 is coming. I’m sure promotion will be in full swing from the end of August. And I hope he will prove you wrong.

I couldn’t agree more. If people think that Zac is not the same down to earth guy he has always been just because he is seen more at awards shows, in candids, and promoting his work, then they are the ones who have the problem. How has Zac lost his integrity or identity just because everyone is interested in him and wants to see pictures of him? That’s not his fault that just means he is becoming successful and is doing something right. I haven’t heard anyone int he business say he is difficult to work with or that he has gotten a big head or his demands are like a prima dona. Nothing against the Jonas Brothers but they are barely out of the starting gate even though they are becoming more and more popular and yet they have a body guard already! Zac is hounded by the paps every time he goes out—-and not because he has promoted it—-and yet he goes wherever he wants and does what he wants by himself. He doesn’t even have a personal assistant going out buying his personal things. That is what caused a problem from a couple fans while he was in Salt Lake City filming HSM3. He and Vanessa tried to go to Target to buy things that everyone needs like shampoo and such and fans got mad because they didn’t want to have pictures taken. Yet, if they had personal assistants doing such things for them then everyone would complain about how they are too big for their britches! The fact is whether people like to hear it or not is there are always going to be those people who will find fault with them. So, if you people don’t want to hear us fans defend them so much, then you guys should quit with the stupid insults.

midnightwonder (109) and Karen (111) - Well put! I completely agree with you. #99, I have seen no evidence that Zac is any less the same down-to-earth guy he has always been.

And the Disney machine thing…it is unfortunate these days that actors get automatically lumped into certain groups or stereotypes by some. First, Zac didn’t start his career with Disney, but that’s beside the point. Yes, I know the overnight craziness began with HSM and yes, Disney’s certainly taking advantage of the popularity of the franchise. But they’re a business…what else would they do? Disney, for some at least, is now apparently a shameful way to get a start or get notice. Why? I suspect it’s because of some of Disney’s “out-of-control” stars and maybe just because Disney’s everywhere these days and people are sick of it. But that’s no reason to make blanket judgments about anyone associated with them. Are there negative feelings about Justin Timberlake out there? He was part of the Disney upbringing. Ryan Gosling too and Keri Russell. I may be unaware but I don’t think there’s a whole lot of hate being slung their way. And please don’t say things about the movies they’ve done vs. the movies Zac’s done because he is coming into his own and has a lot of promise. His 2009 movie premieres will help him gain notice from a wider audience too. But, I for one, think the HSM movies are pure joy, fun, and great ensembles of talent…but I get it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Anyway, back to the down-to-earth thing…I think Zac’s become more sophisticated and mature…that does not equal snobby or full of himself. He shops at Target, pumps his own gas, eats at diners, hangs out with his little brother, runs errands, eats out with and vacations with his girlfriend of 3 yrs (oh the horror!), rides his skateboard, may have the audacity to be seen in the same clothes more than once (how dare he?!). Yep, he’s so above it all now…LOL.

Actually, I love these awards shows and stuff because all I ever see is Zac enjoying himself and seeming a bit wide-eyed with wonder that he’s there. He looks like a fan who is excited to meet some of his favorite actors/athletes/idols…not like someone who’s thinking “hey…you know who I am, right? I’m so big and famous.” He just seems like this regular guy who is enjoying the ride. And, why shouldn’t he? He has worked for it and continues to work for it. His work schedule this year has been crazy. He didn’t just randomly date an heiress or something to get into the spotlight. He has earned the respect of fellow actors, directors, producers, choreographers, and fans, including the parents of those wide-eyed children that he so graciously talks to and gives autographs to… If you don’t like his shoes, fine. If you think he needs a haircut, well whatever. But, his integrity, his identity…I don’t see how that has ever come into question.

I totally agree with you. I only want to add one more thing: when Zac was at the ESPY Awards, he was working. I hardly see him at events that has nothing to do with him (when he is not a presenter or nominee). So he is NOT a ’seatfiller type of guy’: he does not visit events in order to gain more attention, or attend each and every events for the sake of them. Heck, he does not walk the red carpet all the time. That modest and humble man he is.
