The latest Batman flick, The Dark Knight, grossed an estimated $18.5 million so far, the most ever for midnight shows. The previous record was held by Star Wars, Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, which grossed $16.9 million.

The highest single day opening record is currently held by Spider-man 3 which made $59.8 million. The Dark Knight made an estimated around $64 million in its first day.

Some box office experts are saying the Christopher Nolan-directed flick may reach $170 million this weekend. HOLY!

Check out the NYTimes review of The Dark Knight. And if you should be so lucky, see it in IMAX!

Did anyone ever doubt that this movie would be/ will be huge? If so, they are seriously mistaken. I’m seeing it tonight! Yeah! I love Heath! God be with his daughter without her father, such a tsad turn of events. I guess if its your time to go — leave life at its peak…

of course.

this is the best super-hero movie i’ve ever seen.

this is one of the best movie i’ve seen in years.

Don’t usually care much for the Batman movies, but was blown away by this one. Absolutely loved it. Both Bale and Ledger go so deep into character that it is difficult to believe they aren’t really those that they portray!

i just saw the movie to 2:00. and it ended at 4:30. and diz waz the best movie ever!! i loved it. heath did a great job soo did christan

I LOVE Batman films (though to be honest I kind of hated the Batman film with George Clooney & Arnie in…plus Batman Begins didn’t really do much for me) But I’m ridiculously excited to see this film, looks spectacular, it has my favourite Batman villain in, looks fantastically acted & all reviews so far have been positive. However, I refuse to go see this (& pretty much every film ever made from now on) at the cinema. The prices for the UK (or at least where I live in the UK) are RIDICULOUS…like £10 (almost $20) just for a standard seat with no extras on a non-weekend day. Go on the weekend & you can end up paying £15 jsut for one ticket! (almost $30). I refuse to do so, don’t care what the film is. I’ll either download this from somewhere or wait til the DVD.

The cinema sucks now.

i had the pleasure of seeing this movie at midnight!!! And u will not be disappointed… The movie amazing.. Heath Ledger phenomenal… To Me his best work…He is greatly missed, but at least we get to see how wonderful an actor this man was! All the actors come together so well. Christian Bale rocks as BATMAN!!!

Heath Ledger was amazing in it! RIP

OF COURSE!! the movie was incredible!!!!!!!! I’m seeing it tonight again and then again and again..

Joker was so real! Heath gave a mesmorizing performance.

loved everything about the movie, but definitely the Joker’s character made it a lot better. A LOTTT.

“want to see a magic trick?”

“I just want my phone call!”

“I don’t want to kill you. What would I do without you? ”

the hospital scene was incredible. the pencil scene.. yes more!! I can’t get enough of the Joker.

I went this morning, and this movie was just completely amazing. It definitely lived up to the hype, and Heath was amazing in his role as Joker.

that ‘magic trick’ part was fcuking crazy! lmao

aaron eckhart [harvey dent/ two-face] was great… he was a lot better than i thought he would be.

I went to a midnight showing and it was fantastic!!! In my city they were only planning on one midnight showing at each theatre (there’s 2 big ones) originally with the possible addition of one at each theatre depending on demand, but the demand was so big they ended up have 4 midnight showings EACH! All sold out of course! And my city is only 100,000 people… I can’t imagine what it is like in major cities! I would strongly recommend seeing it! It was great! Heath was incredible! Everyone was raving and couldn’t get enough!

I LOVED IT. I saw it at midnight as well, I tried getting the huge IMAX like screen (Cine Capri is what we call it here in Phoenix) but it was completely sold out therefore I had to settle for just a regular theater. It was still great. I hope it breaks all the records.

saw it yesterday at midnight. AMAZING!
Rip Heath… i just loved his acting! he knows how to be funny in this kind of thrilling movie!

selgomez&jobros+demilovato @ 07/18/2008 at 8:48 pm

I SAW THIS MOVIE AT 12:01 IT WAS AMAZING WONDERFUL GREAT INCREDIBLE UN BELIEVEABLE ANYTHING YOU CAN NAME ESPECIALLY HEATH LEDGER

I’ve been in IMAX at midnight and you have to see it there. It was so huge. Great experience!!! Ch. Bale rules!!! As always!

I’ve bowed today when the movie was over.

We are so, so fortunate to be witnessing a Legend in the making! Heath’s Joker will be in history forever.

I’ve cried when I found out he’d died. I’ve cried today when I’ve watched him being BRILLIANT! So sad that this is his last role. He was going to give us so much more!

And last but not least - Christian Bale’s Batman is the best. Ever.

i just saw it. IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER.
HEATH WAS INCREDIBLE

me and my dad…and maybe my sister, are going to see this on Sunday. the only reason is because i heard that the “Twilight” trailer was gonna be one of the previews :D

how does the saying go? you are only famous after you die? the crew have heaths death to thanks for the box office record. lets hope he wins the oscar for this wonderful performance.
AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE! OI OI OI!

[☆I n F a m o u s☆] @ 07/18/2008 at 9:49 pm

you’re gonna spend money and waste 2 1/2 hours of your life just to watch a 60sec trailer… a trailer you could watch online for free? lmaoo that’s weird.

and you heard wrong, the “twilight” trailer doesn’t show before tdk.

The movie has Heath’s passing to thank for such a huge turnout. Regrettably.

Batman the dark knight was a great movie. Heath Ledger’s role in the movie was amazing. I would say that thats the greatest joker ive ever seen.

I saw the Dark Knight yesterday here in Brazil and it was truly something. Everyone should see it. All the actors were amazing. Heath is up to Hannibal Lecter as the best vilan in a movie. Christian Bale e Michael Cane are even better that in Batman Begins. Eckhart amazing! Freeman amazing! Oldman amazing! Maggie way better than Holmes. Direction superb!!!! It’s about 2h30m long, however it looks like 1 hour. It couldn’t have been shorter, great action from the first scene til the end. It needs to break Spider-Man3 records because it’s a much superior flick!!!!
P.S. sorry any grammar mistakes…

I saw this at a pre-show on Wednesday. It was incredible!! A must see! Try to see it at an IMAX theatre if you can :o)

best batman movie ever. best movie i’ve seen in a long long time.
everyone did a superb job. heath’s joker was just amazing.
thank you christopher nolan for making the vision of batman that i always wanted to see on film.

definitely seeing it again, and this time i want the IMAX experience.
can’t wait to find out the final weekend box office numbers.

CHRISTIAN BALE IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!!!!

if it works for them @ 07/19/2008 at 12:29 am

The movie is fantastic!!! I love it !!!!
It puts ” Wanted” to shame. Anything comes from the Pitts is over rated as always because the media stunt from the Pitts publicity industry.

if it works for them @ 07/19/2008 at 12:31 am

Christian Bale rules !!!!

I can’t wait to see it

OMG! This movie was AWESOME! They did an amazing job! Heath Ledger did an awesome job as The Joker and he will be missed dearly. Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, & everybody in this movie did a perfect job they couldn’t have picked better actors and actresses for this movie! Also the graphics were very well done, and this movie shouldn’t have any problem breaking the box office records.

SUCH A GREAT MOVIE!!!!!
HEATH LEDGER DESERVED A OSCAR!!!!!
I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!!!

i saw it in IMAX earlier tonight!!!! in regards to seeing it in IMAX…,..wow such an incredible experience. i’m so glad i got tickets early because they sold out 2 weeks ago! anyways the action sequences especially in imax made you feel so much like you are right there watching them live…ahh so amazing! heath as the joker…..wow….he just transforms and gave the performance of his career. i couldn’t take my eyes off him the whole film. as soon as the movie ended heath’s passing hit me again and i admit that i started tearing up during the credits :( man…hollywood lost such an incredible talent way too soon :( anyways best film of the year! go see it! and go see it on imax!!! well worth it!!! i’m definitely seeing it again soon

I’m going to see it again, in IMAX. The sign of a brilliant actor, is being able to take such a phenomenal joker as was Jack Nicholson, he made it his own and brilliant in his own way (Ledger). Awesome. The crowd was great. The first time it was warranted to clap. When Ledger’s name came up on the credits, people clapped again, and once more for Morgan Freeman lol.

Maggie Gyllenhaal did her role as being ordinary, and enough of a butterface, as to not take away from the two leading men. My friend was horrified, literally every time she turned sideways. I was amazed at the lines in her face and my friend was accurate in saying she looked to be age 50.

LOL I agree

Great post! i especially found it useful where you stated.

It’s kind of terrible I actually wish that Katie Holmes had held the female lead role.

Thanks, if that was to me.

I did not know this was a sequel to 2005’s, “Batman Begins,” also directed by Nolan. I had no interest in seeing it. I think I actually will now.

[~I n F a m o u s~] @ 07/19/2008 at 8:03 am

Katie blows mine.

After seeing maggie in that role it showed me just how much katie sucked in the first film.

CRAP movie! Bale ruined it for me!!!

Hey K # 27

I already saw the Twilight trailer on Youtube. it looks really good, but one of the reasons i’m going to see it is cause Cam Gigandet is in it + I really enjoyed the book.

newport beach, 92660 @ 07/19/2008 at 10:14 am

Saw it at Midnight, theater was PACKED! BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!! Heath Ledger’s performance ( and last unfortunatly :( ) was really something, i give it a 10 star rating out of 10 stars!

phg (brazil) @ 07/19/2008 at 2:57 pm

I have no doubt that Bale’s Batman is the best! He’s so talented… and hot!!! And Heath’s Joker was perfect. I loved the film…

so i never thought i would enjoy a comic book based movie so much. heath was absolutely astonishing. he definately deserves an academy award. it’s only too sad that this tremendous role got to him so deeply. R.I.P heath

Cj go home loser

awesome! r.i.p heath ledger!!! we all love you forever and ever!

that movie was amazing
i saw it last night
heath was AMAZING as the joker
maggie gylenhall is a better rachel than katie holmes

the best movie ever.

I’m sorry to say this but I have to give this thumbs down.

First the good parts:

Heath Ledger is terrific as the Joker. I’m happy to say all the praise of his performance is not just hype. A postumous nomination is truly possible. However I still I’m not convinced that if he were alive there would be all this buzz .But sadly we’ll never know.

The cast is terrific and everybody gives uniformly great performances. Particularly the supporting performances by Aaron Eckhart and Gary Oldman.

Christan Bale makes a good Batman.

Unlke the campy 1960s TV series and “Batman and Robin” the Joel Shucmacher helmed fiasco, director Christopher Nolan and his team DO have a understanding and respect for what makes Batman work as a chasracter…

The Bad

While Nolan and company have a respect for Batman they also seemed bound and determined to squeeze whatever entertainment value can be found frrom the francise. I found this movie to be unremittently girm even so for me it overwhelmed the expereince of seeing it IMAX.

Even though Batman is a serious character there still can be a cathartic moment of release when you see him go into action. I said I t Not in this movie. I said I think Christian Bale makes for a good Batman and I do. I just wish he was giving the opportunity to play a Batman I actually enjoyed watching.I found the previous film in the francise “Batman Begins” to be a well-made but joyless film I have no interest in seeing again. I’m sorry to say that I feel the excact same way about “The Dark Knight.”

I was disappointed.

Unlike the campy

troy, troy…

Why so serious …about the campy approach for Batman?
The Dark Knight and Batman Begin are joyless for you because they are grim?? And you disappointed because you expect the movies had more comics moment??

It’s like you’re saying that Godfather is joyless, unlike the campy Married to The Mob…. or Casino Royale (the new version) is joyless unlike Get Smart.

i thought the dark knight was the best movie ever it was action packed and funny. heath ledger made the joker stand out from the others it was the best. one of my favorite parts were the pencil scene. RIP heath ledger. GO SEE THE MOVIE YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED!!!!!!!!!

I am a huge fan of batman and when i saw it i was blown away by the stunts and the amazing part is that they are real! there was no CGI or special effects. after the movie was over everyone clapped and during the movie people cheered. YOU HALF TO SEE THIS MOVIE YOU DEFFINETLY GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its the best movie i ever saw!!!!!!!!!!!

Look how amazing this movie was with NO cgi! Could you imagine how much better it would of been if they had used it. Mind blowing!

Batman rocks!!! @ 07/20/2008 at 1:24 pm

Wow..This movie definitely a jewel. Watch Christian Bale rising on the top from now on. He is talented, a good family man!
5 Stars plus !!!!!!!!!!!!

robotgirl @ 07/20/2008 at 2:32 pm

I’m a big batman comics fangirl nerd and I really liked this movie because I think it finally showcased what the comics are all about. Not all comics are meant for puerile male interests. Nolan definitely payed homage to the Batman comics while adding a viable Batman universe all his own. The themes of this movie run much deeper than a rubber suit. I think my favorite themes were the nature of insanity and the nature of inherent human goodness and hope. Although the storyline was changed from the comics, I never once found myself making the usual nerdy critique (like when watching something like Wanted or the X-Men movies). There was simply no need.

Ledger played the Joker perfectly. The joker is supposed to be fueled by an incomprehensible insanity and the need to have Batman as a rival. He is also supposed to confuse you a bit - he and Batman are very similar when you look at the base characters. Although I always loved Nicholson’s campy Joker, I couldn’t believe how well Leger understood the role. I hope they include lots of extras on the DVD showing more of his ad libbing in character.

Eckhart is incredible as Harvey Dent. He too masters the internal struggles of his character and is able to subtly express them early on in the film, making a great segue into the latter part. I was excited when I heard he was cast for the part and I was certainly not disappointed.

Why does everyone keep picking on Maggie’s appearance? Who cares? She’s a great actress and she added life to the role. I used to love Katie Holmes but I didn’t think she had any chemistry with the other actors in Batman Begins, nor did I think she possessed the quiet steel strength needed for the character of Rachel Dawes. Maggie is a great actress and she fit into the role seamlessly. Never even noticed poor Katie had left.

Bale of course did a fantastic job as well, but even he admitted that for this role he stepped back quite a bit - Eckhart and Ledger have such strong presences in the movie. I hope the next movie gets made because he will have an amazing role to play if the storyline continues into the next film

You don’t have to be a Batman fan to enjoy this movie! It’s about people, themes, and relationships - the ’superhero’ part is really pretty toned down. I’m not going to say OMG BEST MOVIE EVER but certainly, paired with WALL-E, this is the best movie season that has come around in years.

#60 You mistunderstood me I was saying I DON”T LIKE the campy approach. It dosen’t fit the character. Batman and his world need to be taken seriously, and that’s somethng the filmmakers got right.

However I don’t think taking Batman seriously means the movies have to be downbeat and depressing and that’s what I thought “The Dark Knight” was. I understand that Batman’s world is a bleaker world then other heroes like Spider-Man for instance, but what it comes down to is that when I go a superhero movie I expect some leval of enterainment and with the last two Batman movies I did not find any.
