Natalie Portman has a grand ol’ time starring in her boyfriend’s hilarious new Bollywood-inspired music video, “Carmensita”.
In the video, Venezuelan folk rocker Devendra Banhart plays a prince who must use his snake-shooting eyes, knife throwing prowess and “rebellious beard” to save the a beautiful princess (played by Portman).

This isn’t racist. You’re a freaking idiot if you think this is racist.
It’s a sendup of Bollywood B films. I’ve seen a few and this video isn’t far off. Especially the subtitles.
Devendra is very culturally aware. He’s a fringe artist though, because he’s very irreverent. He never takes himself or a subject matter too seriously.
Portman looks so cute in this.

STFU. Seriously. Those of you claiming this is racist are being more bigoted than Devendra. He’s not even implying that Hindus are inferior or stupid with this video. First of all, you know NOTHING about Bollywood if you think this is offensive. You have literally never seen a Bollywood film, or only the hyper-commercialized films made for the west. You could probably pull up several clips of Bollywood films off of YouTube that take themselves as seriously as this video does.
Secondly, a great deal of the myths and stories in Indian culture are metaphors- THEY’RE NOT MEANT LITERALLY.
If you think the Indians believe some of their myths really happened, you have a lower opinion of them than you could ever suggest Devendra does.
Also, plenty of Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, Pagan, and Atheist people poke fun at their own beliefs. All religions and cultures have preposterous legends and there is nothing wrong with recognizing it.
You want to know what is wrong? Calling someone a racist just because you aren’t especially cultured. It’s people like Sharon and Cassandra that twist religion and culture into dangerous things- taking them too literally and using your righteousness as an excuse to attack others. Piss off.

You people are stupid if you find this offensive. Oh, and stupid-westerners, I would find it absolutely hilarious if someone made a video of jesus dancing around nailed to the cross in a diaper. That would be a great laugh. Actually, check the video on youtube of Jesus and George Bush crapping all over each other. It is great.

I don’t think the video itself is “racist” of course not, it’s just parody, but I do wonder why D.B. and especially Portman think they are entitled to make these sorts of joked? Wouldn’t it have played better if he had cast an ACTUAL Indian woman to send up her own culture, rather than Portman, a privileged outsider?
I watched it. Wow. Portman can’t even act in a music video with no dialogue!
this is NOT funny!! being a hindu ,im really offended..there is a limit and not all bollywood movies are like this.i think natalie portman is very beautiful but in this she looks terrible!!!
It was created to offend, make fun, or be funny. I have a hindu friend who thinks the video is poking fun of Hollywood’s representation on hinduism. I get why people hate these videos, but if you don’t like it, don’t waste your time.
