OlderEstelle Getty Dies at 84
Former Golden Girl star Estelle Getty has died at the age of 84, just three days shy of her 85th birthday.
Getty had been suffering for years with Lewy Body Dementia, reports TMZ.
Her official website, EstelleGetty.com, also had an official announcement:
“To all of Estelle’s Fans,
“Sadly, today July 22, 2008 at 5:35 a.m. Pacific Time, we said our last good-byes to our little friend Estelle, who passed away and made her journey to the great beyond. Although it was a trip that she never wanted to take, she went gracefully, in the comfort of her own home (in Los Angeles), surrounded by her family and her very loving care-givers.
“Estelle’s legacy will live on and on through the comedy and laughter she gave to us all, which will forever keep us laughing out loud.”
Estelle is best known for playing sarcastic, wise-cracking Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls.
RIP.

i’m so sad. golden girls has always been and will always be my favorite show ever. i’m seriously depressed. i even had to call my husband and mom to tell them about her passing. they were kind enough to humor me with their concern…..even though they probably thought i was pathetic. poor little thing. she was so fricken awesome.

I’m gonna miss her. She was an amazing actress and the Golden Girls would never have made it without ‘Sofia’.
I loved Estelle on the Golden Girls and I am saddened by her loss. She was such a lovely, classy lady and she will be sadly missed. RIP, Estelle.

Estelle Getty was part of one of the BEST sitcom shows EVER. Her humor and wit and ad-libing { according to Bea Arthur } will live on every evening in our living rooms across America for years to come. All the Golden girls were and ARE my FAVORITE. Without each and every one of them, the show could not carry on.They had an unique and humorist part that defined their character, and Sophia was adorable and high spirited. Estelle we all love you, and you will be cherished in our hearts forever. Thank you for all the laughs, we will miss you. God speed. Our sympathy to your family and loved ones.

I grew up with Golden Girls, it totally influenced my idea of being a woman, getting older and such. This show had a great impact on me, it always consoled me when I was going through rough times. I often used to watch Golden Girls with my Mom. This show was part of my inner background.
Oh I will miss Estelle. She was such a terrific actress and a great great person. You just had to love her. She will stay in my heart forever. And in this show she will live forever.
Estelle, wherever you are going now, travel savely and have a good time!
I cant lie i watched Golden Girls every Saturday as a kid sitting right next to my mom, and it was hilarious.

Estelle was a great character on Golden Girls … the show was a big success because of her … her character (Sophie) was funny .. Everyone I know loved her and her character. To close, Sophie has gone to that Shady Pines in the sky. RIP Estelle.
