The celebrity baby picture market is inflating nearly as fast as the Zimbabwean dollar. According to impossible-to-confirm reports, Matthew McConaughey earned $3 million for his newborn. J. Lo reportedly raked in $6 million. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reportedly sold pictures of their newborn twins for $16 million. (Obviously, Brangelina will donate the proceeds to charity.) They’re not alone; Jamie Lynn Spears, Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, Jessica Alba, and that pregnant man have all reaped the monetary benefits of the baby bump.

But inviting a glossy-magazine photographer into your home is like inviting a vampire through the doorway. Once they’re in, they’re never going to stop trying to come after the kid. (This doesn’t take into account the prying eyes of telephoto lenses, as Brad Pitt can attest.) Considering all the bitching and moaning celebrities spew about the paparazzi, you’d think they would want to keep the photogs away, not tell the world how much pictures of their new scions are worth. This should come as no surprise, but celebrities make crappy economists.

What follows is a field guide for famous mothers to consult once they’ve brought a new life into the world. We’re offering suggestions based on three personality types, and advice is doled out for three key variables. “Distribution” details how many magazines should get access to the first photos. “Time” prescribes a time line between birth and first glimpse. “Money” recommends an asking price for the celebrity. Celebs, welcome to Baby Econ 101.

The Narcissist
Objective: Attention, fame, money.

Distribution: exclusive shots given to only one magazine. After the initial photograph is released, the key is to tease the photogs. Appear out and about shopping for baby materials but without your bundle of joy. Then, when you do take the baby out for a stroll, find a way to obscure his or her face. (Michael Jackson can provide some advice.) This limits the potential supply of photographs, which will only make for more likely placement whenever one does surface. Most likely, you’ll accompany the newborn in the photo spread.

Time: The initial photo shouldn’t be released immediately after birth, at risk of violating all-important postpartum-dignity standards. Take some time with your baby and imagine how many dollar signs could fit inside those wonderfully innocent pupils. Then, after a week or two, invite photographers into your home. Note: Do not wait longer than a month to release the photo. The public’s interest in your offspring will reach a point of diminishing returns at about the four-week mark. Only in special cases—Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s maybe-alien baby chief among them—does a long silence help drive demand.

Money: The exclusive shot should be sold to the highest bidder. By selling the photographs for the most money, it establishes a market price for pictures of you and the baby, which will incentivize the paparazzi to hunt for more photographs in the future. The higher the price, the more desirable you, yourself, will appear to be. Monetize those assets!

Subcategory: The Narcissist With a Heart of Gold
The only difference between a narcissist and a NWHOG is what they do with the money. It gets sent to charity rather than the kids’ college funds, proving that even celebrities care about those less fortunate. If only we could all be more like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

The Prudish Self-Promoter
Objective: PSPs are after personal fame but have too much dignity to farm out their child’s image for their own good. This leaves you stuck in a tug of fame: Find a way to bathe in rays of flashbulbs without getting your kid stuck in the crossfire.

Distribution: Because you’re in a tricky spot, you have to be innovative. For inspiration, we suggest you turn to the princess of self-promotion, Ms. Tori Spelling. Spelling wisely opened up her womb during her son’s in-utero stage, rather than waiting for his infancy. Spelling’s show on Oxygen pulled in an average of nearly 1 million viewers per show, resuscitating both the moribund channel and the moribund starlet’s career. This was the equivalent to previewing a product before it goes on the market—a more intimate knowledge of the item’s masterminds leads to buzz and hype.

For the PSP, Spelling’s reality-show business model provides space between mother and child. It can revive your career not because you’ve had a kid, but because you’re pregnant. Sure, you’ll have to allow your rediscovered and newfound fans to reach climax by showing the baby once it’s born. Give your pictures to as many magazines as possible to maximize exposure, and give different pictures to each magazine so they’re still labeled as exclusives and will get more prominent placement. After that, though, you can hunker down in the Hollywood Hills, “concentrate on motherhood,” and be given a whole new slew of more mature roles in TV and movies. (The jury is still out on whether Spelling will lease her son’s persona out like she’s done with her own or will resist temptation like Donna Martin.)

Time: one to two weeks after birth to allow for breathing room and for a bit of suspense. Given that the baby photos must be shared with the public, the final episode of the pregnancy can be timed to be in concert with the final episode of the season. Synergy is crucial when you’re managing a brand.

Money: Either follow the NWHOG charity model or give the pictures away for free. Morality is keeping you from maximizing profits, but that’s what makes you a PSP.

The Reclusive Artist Type
Objective: RATs’ purpose is to keep the paparazzi as far away from them and their children as possible.

Distribution: From an economist point of view, RATs have the most counterintuitive model. In order to keep the paparazzi away, you need to make the baby’s life more public than you’d like. Flooding the market will overwhelm the supply side of the equation and correspondingly reduce demand for the pictures. The pictures should be of good-enough quality to be printed in a magazine, so the paparazzi aren’t needed to take higher-quality shots than those provided. Also, a blog outreach strategy could strip the glossies and tabloids of their power. After a few weeks of this overload, the public should lose interest since there are only so many times somebody can look at the same adorable face. You’re trying to induce nausea, not compliments.

Nicole Kidman is a role model for RATs everywhere. She and husband Keith Urban have reportedly turned down million-dollar paydays. They haven’t decided whether to release any photos at all, but if they’re smart economists, they will. Otherwise, the exclusivity of pictures on the market will spike demand and lead to incentives for hawkish paparazzi.

Time: The spate should begin ASAP. Hospital photos should be followed by pictures of the homecoming, the newborn’s room, and the newborn’s diapers after they’ve been soiled.

Money: $0

The key takeaway for celebrities is that you control the supply chain. Act like your child’s publicist—control the narrative, manage the appearances, and play to the audience. You should be used to that kind of lifestyle.

What a stupid thing it would be for the Jolie Pitts to forego that kind of money when it can be used for good.

Nothing the Jolie Pitts do - either sell or not sell - will affect the worth of the photos on the open market. Someone will reap huge sums of money and it should be the Jolie Pitt Foundation.

Please. This flies in the face of reality. People - and clearly this writer - seem to forget that waaaaay before there was even a Shiloh there were paparazzi stalking this couple and their children. Hiding in bushes and harassing people at Maddox’s school so they could get pics of the kids. People were getting rich off their photos before the Jolie Pitts ever sold the rights to Shiloh’s pics. In fact, I believe it was precisely that reason that they made the decision to sell Shiloh’s photos. For some reason, I think it may have been Brad’s diabolical and clever revenge on the paps and the tabloids.

You’re either very naive or incredibly stupid. EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS OF Brad and Angie’s BIO KIDS are like the Holy Grail to papparazzis. Exclusive candids of ANY of the children go for a ton of money. Just like candid exclusives of Shiloh when she was born, the first candid photos of these twins are going to go a TON OF MONEY.

Unlike with some celebs, Brad and Angie and selling the first photos and giving the money to charity DOES NOT DIMINISH DEMAND OR INTEREST. They will ALWAYS be hounded by ratzi seeking exclusive or any candid photos. Haven’t you been paying attention the last 3 years? Even the blurry photos fetch high dollar amounts. Selling the first photo merely drives down the price of subsquent photos. It doesn’t eliminate the demand.

This issue has been debated long before your post, and your view may not change. However, we all know the papz will get pictures of(and make lots of money off) these babies eventually. Why not avoid the crush of interest, please the fans, and do something for humanity by selling the pix? The solution the JPs came up with when Shiloh was born was phenomenal! LOS ANGELES: Computer-animated movie house DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. said Tuesday its second-quarter earnings beat Wall Street expectations because of a knockout performance by its latest film, “Kung Fu Panda.”

The movie, distributed by Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures June 6, has become the studio’s most successful non-sequel U.S. film.

It helped the company bring in about $141 million in revenue and net income of $28 million, or 30 cents per share.

Analysts, on average, expected revenue of $122 million, with earnings per share of 23 cents, according to a survey by Thomson Financial.

The film has so far grossed $209 million domestically and $510 million at the worldwide box office, and added an unexpectedly large $46.4 million of revenue in the quarter.

“Despite the difficult economy, the overall theatrical business remains very strong,” Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg told analysts on a conference call.

The results represent a 37 percent drop in revenue and a 55 percent drop in net profit from the same quarter a year ago.

DreamWorks Animation produces two animated movies per year and can experience large fluctuations in its quarterly results.

“Shrek the Third,” released in the summer of 2007, brought in $29.9 million in revenue in the quarter, mostly in pay TV monies, while the fall 2007 release “Bee Movie,” added $25.5 million in sales thanks to overseas DVD revenue.

The studio expects to release a sequel, “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa,” on Nov. 7.

The “Madagascar” sequel, costing between $150 million to $170 million to produce, is also expected to see marketing costs rise 10 percent to more than $190 million because of the weak dollar, Katzenberg said.

DreamWorks Animation has been a driving force behind the rollout of 3-D screens in North America ahead of the March release of its 3-D movie, “Monsters vs. Aliens,” after which it will produce all its movies in 3-D.

The company now expects between 2,500 and 3,000 screens in North America will be able to show the film in 3-D in March, or about half the screens it will debut on, said Chief Financial Officer Lew Coleman.

The company is hoping theater owners charge a premium between $3 and $7 for 3-D screenings, which would allow it to reap more profits.

“We clearly want them to charge as much as they think they can and maintain the audience,” Coleman told The Associated Press. “It will be an experiment in price elasticity.”

“It’s not surprising though given Knox is such a great place,” he said.

“We never realised Angelina and Brad held us in such high esteem.”

David Lindsay’s website babynames.com.au says Knox is Irish meaning “from the hills”.

And he said it was a sensible choice in today’s age. “It’s a solid name and it’s uncommon, which I think a lot of people like for these days,” he said. “Some names go in and out of favour, but a name like Knox is one that’s reasonably timeless.”

Mr Lindsay said the name Knox would probably be adopted by other parents, given the couple’s status. “It’s possible, and it’s an acceptable name whereas Sunday Rose (the name of Nicole Kidman’s baby) isn’t likely to be repeated in a hurry,” he said.

Hi Tita, I live in NYC but I’m visiting my kids in Anaheim this week. Nothing fell off the walls but the floor was moving, all the furniture was shaking like a runaway roller coaster and the cat freaked out and almost had a nervous breakdown. We had one aftershock that felt like a train running directly beneath the house. The news said there were more than 20 aftershocks in all. My daughter-in-law said they felt it in Irvine where she works. Thank God this wasn’t The Big One.

The Cannes premiere of “Changeling”

With the paparazzi busy flashing pictures of Clint Eastwood and Angelina Jolie at the Cannes premiere of their new drama, “Changeling,” it was easy to overlook the fact that the movie was part of a vastly expanded international strategy at Universal.

This was only the second year that the studio was on the Riviera acting as its own international sales agent and distributor.

That reflected a shift in direction that has encompassed both the movie studio and its theme parks, initiated by Universal Studios president and COO Ron Meyer, Universal Pictures chairs Marc Shmuger and David Linde, and Tom Williams, Universal Parks and Resorts chairman and CEO.

For most of the past two decades, Universal had been partnered in United International Pictures (UIP), a joint venture with other studios to distribute their movies outside North America. That began to wind down after Universal announced the formation of its own international distribution system, Universal Pictures International (UPI), in January 2007.

“If there is a growth business, which I believe there is, it’s international,” Meyer says. “There’s still a chance for home video to grow; and I think there’s a chance for theatrical to grow. (But abroad) there’s real opportunity.”

This philosophy has led the studio not only to handle its own distribution internationally, but also to increase its involvement in local production around the world, distributing some local product worldwide and some specifically in the territory where each film is made.

“It’s hugely important,” Meyer says. “You pick up films that are indigenous to certain territories, and for a small price can do quite well. At one point we picked up a film for Germany, ‘7 Dwarves,’ and it was one of the highest-grossing films in the history of (that country).” That movie earned $22.3 million in Germany alone.

Masterful timing, even for him

At the time of today’s earthquake, I was sitting in a Beverly Hills screening room with about two dozen others, watching Woody Allen’s new film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The shaking began just a few minutes before the first appearance in the narrative of Penélope Cruz’s fiery ex-wife character.

Of course, the more appropriate timing for what turned out to be, thankfully, a non-fatal 5.4 magnitude tremor would have been for it to occur during one of the scenes where Cruz’s kooky Maria Elena goes loco. There are several such moments.

Across town, in Glendale, my wife Dawn was on the treadmill at home, watching a TV broadcast of Ocean’s Thirteen. And when you read what happened with her, you might say to yourself ‘Only in Hollywood’ and sure enough, I cannot blame you for thinking this couldn’t happen anywhere else.

In the better-than-the-second and not-as-good-as-the-first Vegas-set adventure, Danny Ocean and the boys set about triggering an earthquake at a key moment in their high-stakes hotel heist. At first, it doesn’t work, so Brad Pitt’s character of Rusty Ryan - from the craps table - exhorts a pair of his colleagues (played by Scott Caan and Casey Affleck) to ‘Hit ‘em harder!’ It was at that exact moment, while on the treadmill, that my wife experienced today’s unwelcome return of the SoCal shaker. So at first, for a brief moment, she thought that perhaps some revolutionary home version of Sensuround had been added to the broadcast.

As it stands, my wife can safely boast that she felt the earth move while in the company of Brad Pitt. And if you had to pick, circa 2008, a celebrity to spend your final moments with, it would be hard to beat Brad (for the women) or Angelina (for the men). Although in the latter case, you could certainly do worse than Rebecca Hall (Vicky) and Scarlett Johansson (Cristina).

Adding yet another movie layer to the experience is the fact that the Beverly Hills screening room in question is directly across the hall from the first floor offices of Real D, the vaunted 3D movies technology purveyor that is currently juicing up Journey to the Center of the Earth. Their 3D is good, but it’s not quite as impressive as 5.4D.

Why is “US” the only mag carrying the story about “People” getting the pics? “People” does not even have it? Is Jared turning in to “US” mag subsite?

I admire Brad and Angie. They love to give, give, give to those who need the most. These two are so kind, generous and down to earth.
How can you not love them. They are the “golden hearted couple”.

I was never interested in hollywood people before. However, these past three years I have followed and tried to read everything about Brad and Angie. Brad and Angie are fascinating. Although they are irresistably attractive, they have this inner glow that is coming from their hearts that I am totally spell-bound.

I think Brad will do promotion of BAR on his own. Angie probably won’t accompany him in Venice. They will do what is best for their kids,and I kinda think Angie will support him in promotion of BB,but won’t do it on the promotion of BAR since babies are still too small.but as they proved before,you never can guess when it comes to JPs.remember Toronto or Venice last year,no one expect them to be there together,but they were.

Sexy action star Angelina Jolie has inquired about playing the feline role of Catwoman in the next Batman sequel–this according to senior Catwoman actress Julie Newmar.

Newmar, who made the role famous in the cornball Batman of the 1960s, told the New York Daily News: “Angelina would own the part. My industry friends tell me (she) has made inquiries about the role. I can understand how it would pique her interest.. Catwoman is Batman’s one true love. She’s tremendously popular with women because she’s both a heroine and a villainess.”

If this is true then I’m glad the People mag bagged the rights of the twins’ first pictures. Other than People, I also think that Hello is good just like Shiloh’s first photos. I wonder how does the Us Weekly feel about this? Certainly they are not happy about it, what with all the negative stories Us Weekly is reporting lately about Angie & Brad. The ever full-of-lies-magazine even featured an imaginary wedding anniversary of Brad & X , complete with apparently manipulated polls. Now, about the X participating a cancer telethon in September, well that’s noble. Any help will do. One thing though, isn’t it ironic, she’s a known chain smoker (she’s even constantly being photographed smoking) yet is about to do a cause to fight cancer??? How’s that, I can’t reconcile this?? Unless of course she’s already stopped smoking. I see Jen G and Violet all the time in the press. No one critizes her at all. Its always oh what a great Mom. I bet she does not have 100 paps outside everyday waiting for her like Angie does. She is free to take Violet to these places because the shop of them, while cute, is not a money maker. Whereas Angie and Brad get hounded all the time. When they do venture out, Haters claim, oh this is a publicity shot. Hell they don’t need to get publicity. Angie nor Brad have PR team at this time. Angie never had one, and I think Brad let his go. The press follows them everywhere.

They are now at home enjoying their family, and I bet next week you will be hard press to find a magazine that does not have some mention of them in it.
