Gerard Butler Exits Elegy

Gerard Butler leaves The Cinema Society and Glamour’s screening of Elegy at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room and then attends the after party with the movie’s star Patricia Clarkson in NYC on Tuesday.

The film stars Ben Kingsley as David Kepesh, a cultural critic who finds his life (which he indicates is an “emancipated manhood”) thrown into tragic disarray by Consuela Castillo who’s played by Penélope Cruz. She’s a well-mannered student who awakens a sense of sexual possessiveness in her teacher.

Elegy premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, and will have a limited release on August 8.

Ebonyrose,

WHO THE HELL TOLD YOU BRAZILIANS ARE ******* BLACK ?

Yes, there are black Brazilian people in Brazil as well as white. A little History goes a long way here. We were colonized by Portugal. Enormous populations throughout the country are of Italian, French and German descent, and we have the biggest Japonese migration rate. Yes, the Portuguese brought the Africans back then, and although being black is as beautiful as any other color, in Brazil it’s still minority. We are more European than most people care to know about. This is shockingly absurd to categorize Brazilians as Black. And don’t start with the racial discussion w/ me because being Brazilian I’m hardly one. Just thought I’d get everyone updated on the real facts.

Accept one thing: there is no such thing as black and white. ***’s just not this square. The variations of skin tones are disgustingly downplayed but other cultures. Especially by American standarts. I am not as white as a very white American, but I am white, so it says my birth certificate.

Have you also considered climate and how certain countries are positioned ? If the sun was as hot and shone every single day here like it does in most of Brazil, most “white” people would hardly be able to say they are white. Just think summertime.

I don’t care whether or not GB loves black women. Good for him. I loved his quote about Brazil and Brazilian women too, being Brazilian myself. But if you are gonna talk about color, and if you are gonna talk about Brazil, you must understand we might be Italian, we might be Japonese, we might be Black, we might be German, we might be Portuguese… We are not ONE thing. And if we were, it would NOT be black. Get it straight.

PS: like I said I will not entertain racial comebacks. These are the facts about my country, it’s cultural groups and history.
