Bernie Mac Dies at 50
Comedian Bernie Mac died of pneumonia at age 50 early Saturday morning.
His rep released this statement: “Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago-area hospital. No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family’s privacy continues to be respected.”
Mac, who was nominated for Emmys in 2002 and 2003 for The Bernie Mac Show, was admitted to Northwestern Memorial hospital for pneumonia on August 1 and was expected to make a full recovery.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bernie, his family and friends.

As word spreads, tributes are pouring in from the funnyman’s friends and colleagues.

George Clooney: “The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed.”

Actress/comedienne Niecy Nash, who played Mac’s little sister on the hit television series The Bernie Mac Show and acted opposite him in the 2005 film Guess Who, said this about her friend and mentor: “His passing is such a major loss to the acting and comedy communities. Bernie Mac was the personification of the word ‘real.’ He kept it real. That kind of genuine spirit that he carried all the time cannot be easily duplicated, but I will do my very best to try.”
Fox Broadcasting Company and 20th Century Fox Television: “Bernie Mac was a gifted talent whose comedy came from an authentic and highly personal place. He was a tremendous live performer and a wonderful actor. What sad news and what a shock. Loved him in the Ocean movies. May he RIP.
What a shock. How very sad when someone seems to have achieved so much to be then cut down at still an early age (we’re the same age and trust me 50 WAS old once upon a time but not now in 2008). I had pneumonia once and I believe it was mostly because I smoked. One thing I learned is the combination of smoking when ailing with a lung infection or flu can turn into pneumonia that at best will leave you with scarred and sensitive lungs. Don’t smoke.

By all accounts, Bernie was a wondeful person to work with and supportive of other actors be they new or in the business for awhile. Bernie Mac, Reggie White and James Michael Gardner.
You may ask what these people have in common? It is an autoimmune system dease called sarcodisis. It attacks mainly the lungs but can cause inflammation in any of the body’s organs. I have had it for over ten years. It flared up last winter and I got pnuemonia and almost died. There were three days where I sat up to sleep and I prayed hard for each and every breath. That incident changed my life, the way I think about life and myself and others. I am one blessed man. I made it through it by the grace of God. I wished it had been the same for Bernie Mac and Reggie White.
