Brad Pitt Pays Tribute To Bernie Mac

Brad Pitt Pays Tribute To Bernie Mac

Brad Pitt, George Clooney and other cast members of the Ocean’s trilogy have paid tribute to their co-star Bernie Mac, after his tragic death on Saturday.

Pitt said, “I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with Rhonda and their family. Bernie Mac, you are already missed.”

Clooney lamented, ”The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed.”

Don Cheadle, who also starred in the Ocean’s films, added: “This is a very sad day for many of us who knew and loved Bernie. He brought so much joy to so many. He will be missed but heaven just got funnier.”

Samuel L Jackson, who costars with Mac in Soul Men (out later this year), said, “It goes without saying that Bernie was one of the pre-eminent comedians of our generation. He was also an attentive husband, a great father and loving grandfather. I feel blessed to have shared years of friendship with Bernie Mac, and I’m honored to have finally co-starred with him in what I consider to be his finest cinematic acting achievement.”

Bad news - Isaac Hayes also died. Weirdly enough, he is co-starring with Bernie Mac in an upcoming film. Creepy! Samuel L. Jackson is also in that film, I hope nothing happens!

Angelina Jolie’s Endorsement
It may seem as if most entertainment industry figures are aligning with Barack Obama and just a few with John McCain, but there are still a handful of famous names who are still on the fence. And both campaigns are well aware of one star who stands out among the undecideds: Angelina Jolie.

Both campaigns have reached out to her, apparently to court her support. But in a statement to Variety provided by political adviser Trevor Neilson, Jolie says that she is waiting to make up her mind.

“I have not decided on a candidate,” Jolie says, “I am waiting to see the commitments they will make on issues like international justice, refugees and how to address the needs of children in crisis around the world.”

Unlike many other celebrity endorsements, Jolie’s carries the weight and influence of her extensive humanitarian work around the world, as the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Her statement was an indication that she would be open to choosing a candidate.

That was in evidence earlier this year after her trip to Iraq, when she wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post, “Staying to Help in Iraq,” in which she argued that the U.S. should step up financial and material assistance to Iraq — not withdraw from its commitment in the region.

She wrote, “My visit left me even more deeply convinced that we not only have a moral obligation to help displaced Iraqi families, but also a serious, long-term, national security interest in ending this crisis.

“Today’s humanitarian crisis in Iraq — and the potential consequences for our national security — are great. Can the United States afford to gamble that 4 million or more poor and displaced people, in the heart of Middle East, won’t explode in violent desperation, sending the whole region into further disorder?”

“What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made.”

She did, however, “call on each of the presidential candidates and congressional leaders to announce a comprehensive refugee plan with a specific timeline and budget as part of their Iraq strategy.”

Her call for a continued U.S. presence left some conservative blogs buzzing that Jolie may in fact endorse McCain — after some had just assumed that she would back Obama.

Jolie has said very little about the presidential race since.

In June, when Entertainment Weekly asked her whether she talked politics with Clint Eastwood, a longtime Republican, on the set of the upcoming movie, “The Changeling,” she said, “Actually, we don’t disagree as much as you’d think. I think people assume I’m a Democrat. But I’m registered independent and I’m still undecided. So I’m looking at McCain as well as Obama.”

Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, has endorsed McCain and recently wrote an op-ed for the Washington Times highly critical of Obama.

Sorry need to disagree with Angie!
That was in evidence earlier this year after her trip to Iraq, when she wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post, “Staying to Help in Iraq,” in which she argued that the U.S. should step up financial and material assistance to Iraq — not withdraw from its commitment in the region

Excuse me we are borrowing money from China at an unprecedented rate our economy is going down hill as the Iraq ’s sit on over 80 BILLION dollars in oil money! We are rebuilding without any help from the Iraq gov’t.

What we cannot afford, in my view, is to squander the progress that has been made.”
What progress, we invaded a sovereign nation that had done nothing to us, not responsible for 911, no WMD’s while, their leader was a dictator and despicable man, women at least had rights. The right to own property , businesses to hold positions of power. Since our invasion, honor killings have become the norm, with no prosecution. The Islamic fundamentalists now have a better footing in the country setting women, children, Christians and Jews back. On MSNBC today there is an article saying the Iraq’s want a time line for us to get out! While I know that Angie is a wonderful humanitarian and a woman high moral principle, we can’t always expect other countries to adopt what we believe to be the best way. Iraq at one point was the one place in the Middle East that women and children had a voice, that was before we invaded. I’m very aware of the slaughter of the Kurds, Saddam will *********** for that, it doesn’t negate the fact that there are genocides taking place all over the world and our gov’t only steps in when there is oil at stake! Women and children be damned!

Getting off my soapbox.

These past seven days have taken a very depressing turn.

First, Morgan Freeman got into a terrible car crash (and we found out his marriage has ended); then Bernie Mac died; and now, Isaac Hayes.

So flipping depressing.

I loved Angelina’s oped a few months ago. I agree with it. I supported the surge and think it would be huge mistake to leave Iraq too soon.I won’t go further in details since I don’t want this to turn into a long political discussion esp since it is a condolence thread.

One of our local channels had a BM marathon today, I was laughing myself silly, then I checked MSNBC and saw the news about Isaac…
Damn, Bernie, Morgan and Isaac are all in Soul Man!

Angie was talking about the refugees in iraq, the surge allowed the UNHRC workers to go into the field to help the refugees, that’s what she meant when she said the progress we made, she doesn’t want the US to pull out without a plan for the refugees. She has never said she was pro or con about the invasion, her sole goal was to make sure the refugees are taken care of-this view of angie’s is not new.

R.I.P Bernie. You will be truly missed.

mighty fine

From YBF

We lost one of the best comedians of our time to Pneumonia yesterday, Bernie Mac. And now his sister Mary Ann Grossett has spoken with People.com about details of his death. Bernie’s wife of 30 years Rhonda and 30 year old daughter Je’Niece were both with him when he died. Apparently he had to be recusitated twice; once he was brought back by the doctors, then went into cardiac arrest the second time. His sister Mary Ann recalls her brother and sister-in-law’s last conversation:

[Rhonda said] ‘Don’t leave me … ‘I’m waiting for you to come back.’ He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that’s when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired.”

You can check out the rest of the story at People as honestly I’m not really up to posting more of it due to the emotional nature of it. You can also read some of his celebrity friends’ words of rememberance here. The funeral services will take place August 15th in an undisclosed location. This is such a terrible loss. R.I.P. Mr. Mac.

Sheri, I posted an article I saw on Huffington Post. You can agree or disagree as you which it doesn’t matter to me. I thought it was an interesting read. Angie was talking about the surge and how now was the time to start thinking about the refugees that have been affected by the war.

She is not taking sides on the war. She is not defending the invasion or any aspect of the war. Her concern is the refugee as that is what her position with the UNHCR is about, refugees. So whatever your opinion is, is okay by me. Her oped piece was posted her at JJ’s. You might want to read it if you haven’t all ready. Peace

Entire article at link
RIP Bernie Mac

The man ostensibly being judged now — let’s call him Offstage Bernie — was quieter than you’d expect, a churchgoing Christian who dropped the J-word as frequently as Onstage Bernie dropped those curse words. Offstage Bernie stayed married to his high school sweetheart for more than 30 years, and liked to brag that he had “no outside kids.” (”That’s rare for a black man,” he cracked to Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show.”) He and his wife raised a daughter, then took in his 16-year-old niece and her 2-year-old daughter. Later, that served as material for his highly acclaimed Fox TV sitcom, “The Bernie Mac Show.”

Onstage Bernie, who starred in many films, from the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise to 2007’s “Pride,” had a strong current of old-school African American conservatism running through his comedy: You take care of family, no matter what. Work is just that — work. Do your job and shut the [expletive] up. Children are to be seen and not heard, and if they are heard, don’t be afraid to open a can of you-know-what.

My sincere condolences go out to Isaac Hayes’ family & friends… Another great talent loss before their time. He will be sorely missed.

As for Brad, George, etc. paying their respects as well… That’s what friends do; anyone with a heart feels the loss of good people, even strangers.

Will Brad attend the funeral? He might not. Not out of disrespect, but the need to give those attending the service of Bernie Mac peace from the circus that would surely follow his attendance. Let’s face it: the paps will show none. Then again, if Brad DOESN’T attend… he’ll be branded as “selfish, cold, etc.” The tabs will have a field day no matter what happens. Here’s hoping he can slip in unnoticed.

Rumor has it that he was asked to attend Princess Diana’s funeral {she was said to be very much taken with him}, & slipped in under the radar - Others said he declined BECAUSE of the circus {paps} already camped outside, sending instead a beautiful flower arrangement & personal condolence message to the young princes’. It’s only a rumor though…

Finally, I don’t see why any of you are surprised by “McNasty” & others like him/her… They spew hate for the simple reason that they get responses from others & can then laugh & say: “There, see, I’m IMPORTANT! THEY NOTICE ME!” Who’s worse? Those who spew hate - or those who give them power by acknowledging them?

The obnoxious loud-mouth bigot ruining the party, reunion, dinner out, etc. feeds on the disgust of those offended & answering back. Walk away… IGNORE THEM! if that’s what winds your clock, & I guarantee you - THEY GO AWAY WITHOUT ANY POWER!

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. Had to get that bit off my chest.

‘Bye

remember da truth @ 08/11/2008 at 8:23 am

Sheri,
I understand your point of view, but Angie never said she supported the war. She is not rehashing the past, but rather looking to the future. The war can be debated ad nauseum, but the fact remains that we can’t undo what we did. We are there now, so what do we do about 4 million people displaced, the destroyed homes and economy, etc that are in place now?

That is what Angie is talking about. The Taliban grew in Afghanistan grew as a result of not cleaning up after a war, and she’s saying we need to clean up the mess we’ve made or foster more terrorism in the region. We need to help these people.

Dina has said the Iraqi government is not helping, and she’s right. But that’s because we beheaded the government without a clear plan in place and the current government are authority figures in name only, without the backing of anyone in real power. The one thing that Saddam Hussein did was keep all factions working together and a civil war at bay. A lack of understanding of the region by the Bush Administration has led to the current lack of power in Iraq as all factions are fighting for their voice to be heard.

These issues are extremely complicated and there is no easy answer and that is what Angie has been saying all along. Platitudes and promises won’t help. And death and destruction will continue long after the war is over, simply because the structure that held it all together has been broken. It will take years to repair, and in the meantime, we owe the innocent people whose lives have been unfairly disrupted some humanitarian response or we will create more bitter, irrational terrorists. It is in our national security interest to be humanitarians in the region.

Would be nice if the entire Ocean gang could attend as a group. I know that Don C. will be there. George will probably be there. Hope Brad comes but if he doesn’t we know why. It may show more respect by not coming as you said because the media will focus on him and not the family or Bernie. But it would be nice.

This is wierd to post about Brad and Angie on this thread.

We need a happier thread please.

This is so sad and we want to stay happy like the birth of the twins.

dina #1 @ 08/11/2008 at 12:43 am Sheri, I posted an article I saw on Huffington Post.

Peace

hello carolina. i hope you have a great day.

I am still a bit shocked at this death

What are the Jolie Pitt fans trying to do? Disscussing Jolie Pitt issues on this thread is in such bad taste.

Tragic loss. I was a huge fan of the Bernie Mac Show. After that I was attracted to whatever shows, movies, specials he was in. Amazing talent. At least his work is still around so we all can continue to enjoy it, and others can discover him as well!

Rest in peace Bernie Mac. You are one of a kind and will be missed.

Its really sad to loose Bernic Mac and the other guy in two days. Nothing’s going to happen to the other guys in that movie they starred in.

There are some stupid and shallow assed people on this site. RIP Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes.

Its been said that only God can take, and only Him gives. These are one of those time you wish God could change His mind, Bernie was my favourate, and truelly like, may he forever rest PEACEFULLY!!Amen!!!
