Angelina Jolie Replaces Tom Cruise in “Edwin A. Salt”
Angelina Jolie will be replacing Tom Cruise in the Columbia Pictures espionage thriller Edwin A. Salt.
Variety says Angie is “the rare female who is viable in an action genre that has been almost the exclusive domain of men.” No doubt!!!
Jolie would play the title character, a CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence. Edwin A. Salt will be rewritten by the movie studios and will undergo a title change, obviously.
Tom had long been rumored to take the project but eventually bowed out because (reportedly) a $20 million salary wasn’t possible. The film will reunite Angie will her Bone Collector director, Philip Noyce.
Wow, who saw this one coming!? More spy chick Angie! Woo!!!!!

I can only see AS as a miniseries; it’s just too big for anything else. Wonder if Angie would be interested in doing a miniseries?
atlas shrugged is 1 movie i will only believe to be confirmed if it starts shooting. the book may be good but turning it into a 2.5/3 hrs. movie i believe won’t do it any justice as what jill had said.
I would love to see AJ with Daniel Craig again in anything but a Bond movie.

A drama like Revolutionary Road!! I don’t want another action film because Jolie will be typecasted.

Angie has done TV before and she might be interested in a mini-series if the script is to her liking. I want AS to be done well as there are so many fans of this book who will rise up in arms if a poor adaptation is done.

Sorry, but I don’t know much about the book. Could you please briefly give me the synopsis?? All I read about it on online forums is that it’s a great role for an actress.
jill,
keep using it. everyone already knows you got it from me. lmbao.
WELL HER MANAGER SAID IT HIMSELF… PEOPLE HATE HER OR LOVE HER, ONLY SHE HAS POWER LIKE THAT.

Got what from you? You got nothing to give. That little two-millimeter nub doesn’t count for squat.
Now go on outa here. Scat.
I love seeing her in the action stuff. She really is one of the few actresses around who can pull it off. I remember the fight scenes in MMS. Any other woman doing that we would have called it some kind of abuse. But with Angie, we know that she can hold her own. While I loved Wanted, I did think she was way too thin, I hope that after these babies she does not loose too much weight. I looked back at pictures of her, and she has always been thin. I think because she is such a force personality wise, you get the impression that she is a much larger woman than she really is. But that being said, I think she was her most sexist in Tomb raider. I just don’t want the drama again about her weight. It will get in the way people talking about her movie performances.
But what confidence the studio must have in her. How often have you heard of a part originally written for a man being rewritten for a woman. That is really saying a great deal about her, and her ability to pull this off. I think Tom made a mistake. I look forward to seeing this movie, and imagining how it would have been with a male in the role instead.
I was needing some Jolie/Pitt news after a fairly quiet week.
Thanks.
Isn’t this some kind of a Coup!!??! Has there been any female lead star REPLACING a MALE star, not to mention somebody big like Tom Cruise? Wow wow wow. It goes to show how studios trust the box office draw and charisma, and POWER of Angelina. What a fantastic advancement for female actors! They can do it!!! No longer they have to stay an arm-candy or a side-kick to the male ‘lead’ LOL!

It’s impossible to give even a brief synopsis of the book, but basically it’s about a man who says he can stop the motor of the world — and does. You don’t know if the guy is a liberator or a destroyer. There are a lot of great characters in the book, way too many to enumerate here. The part Angelina would play is terrific and it’s made for her. But there is no way in the world that a two or three hour movie could begin to do the book justice. It would take 7 or 8 hours minimum, and that would mean a miniseries.
To all the “concerned” posters who say Angie will saddle Brad with 6 kids while she goes off to make this movie, where was your misplaced concern, when Brad left Angie (a couple of days after her c-section in the hospital no less!) to meet with Quention Tarantino and then signed on for his movie that starts production in October. Angie will be home with 3 month old twins plus their 4 other kids while Brad is on a movie set! Doesn’t she deserve your sympathy as well?
jill,
`your bloody-vəgīna’s leaking right now, i know.
….two things in this world get you off.. 1. fighting for jolie’s love. 2. speaking to me, your master.
keep on stalking me, it brings back old memories.
Anonymous @ 08/11/2008 at 10:14 pm I want Jolie to start on Atlas Shrugged first. It’s an Oscar baity film with a female lead character role that most actresses would kill for.

She’ll star in it when she’s ready–she’s patient enough to wait until it’s finely honed.

This is a huge novel, like over 1000 pages if I remember correctly. I read it a couple of years ago and to be honest I had to read it over a couple of months, a section at a time.

Sadly, I think you are overly optimistic for the next few years.
Angelina and the re-write of Edwin A Salt is the exception which proves the rule.
I think that whilst you can have men who can’t act but can do action and only action (Arnie Schwartznegger springs to mind), I don’t think it is possible for a woman who can’t act to do only action heroine movies.
I think any woman who wants to occupy the action hero space with any sort of credibility must have both, acting chops AND action chops. (yes, the cliche still applies that a woman must be twice as good as a man to be considered equal etc etc.) That woman who plays the amazonian woman on TV (can’t remember her name) and others like her, just won’t cut it on the big screen.
But in the long term, this will happen.
Interestingly enough, in the Hong Kong Movie kung fu space, there used to be several women action movie stars (whose names I’ve unfortunately forgotten as my cantonese is merely functional) who could really kick a s s as kung fu fighters. Did you watch crouching tiger hidden dragon? If you did, do you remember the older woman (not michelle yeoh but the 50 something year old woman who played Zi Yi’s coach). Well, in her hey day, she was one of the top women kung fu movie stars in Hong Kong.
This is great news, only Angelina can pull this off. Angelina is smart and extremely talented not to mention beautiful.
YAHOO !! Can’t wait for the movie. Rather watch Angie, anytime.

sadly most of the “concerned” posters are women themselves. instead of supporting other each other, some women want to judge one another. we should hold each other up and support choices. the jolie pitts seem to have it all together. when they are out and about with their children you can see that the kids are loved, happy, well behaved children. no need to worry.

It’ll be FOREVER before she starts, between RE-writing the script, picking new co-stars, picking location, etc. etc. so haters, back off.
++++++++++++
“Jolie took a liking to it, prompting the studio’s decision to rewrite it. Sources said the project won’t require that much of an overhaul to suit her.”
Maybe sooner than you think. Hopefully she’ll get in proper shape first.
That’s great. The Cruiser has other projects down the line so don’t cry for him LOL.
I don’t think this will start shooting until the beginning of 2009.
keep the casting news coming. we like that.
oh my goodness I am already so excited!!
