OlderJames Franco - “GQ” September 2008
James Franco takes the September 2008 cover of GQ Magazine as his latest comedy, Pineapple Express, is out in theaters now. Here’s what the 30-year-old actor had to say:
On making a few bad films: “I wanted to be the best actor that I could be. It’s just sad for me, because I know I worked so hard, and I just feel like in some way I kind of blew it. It’s just hard to get away from what I see as the stain of these bad movies.”
On not getting along with the cast of Freaks & Geeks: “I’ll admit I was not a team player. A lot of it, I think, just had to do with being obnoxious when the camera was on someone else. Maybe I’d eat a banana in the background that would take focus away from other actors. I didn’t think about it that way, but now I could say, ‘Look, the scene’s not about me, it’s about them, just chill out, James. Don’t eat a f—-ing banana.’ ”
On kissing costar Sean Penn in the movie Milk: “The first kiss of the movie was out on Haight Street, with, like, 200 people watching, outside. I’m sure in the end it will be a really cool shot, but it starts close and then it takes maybe a minute. That’s a long time on film with everybody watching, and, like, a fake moustache getting in your mouth. It was long enough that you couldn’t help but thinking, ‘Oh, my God, I’m kissing Spicoli.’”

wow..i just read the full article on gq and he’s so…interesting. its cool to see a serious actor for a change, and at least he learned his lessons. it sucks he’s a jerk though..but he’s hot!!

He is cute, BUT, I hope he has learned from his arrogant and obnoxious behavior…After reading what he did to some cast members when they were shooting, when he did not get his way, that was childish and spoiled sounding. If he has grown from that experience since then, he will become a much better actor and producers and directors will be more open to hire him and work with him . Then his career will take off like he REALLY wants. Better than above.

I never really cared for James but after reading this, I am def. going to be paying more attention to him. He’s smart w/out being smarmy, an intellectual w/out the snobbery - with a sense of subtle humor.
I loved this email he sent to the interviewer after his piece: ““I felt like we didn’t talk about writing or art as much as I would have liked, as those are what take up most of my life now. But if we didn’t it’s because I closed those subjects because I was uncomfortable about this forum as a place to discuss those things. Who wants to hear an actor talk about books or art? No one. I just hope my interest in those areas, and my dedication to them, was apparent. But I know as an actor I’m not supposed to show interest in anything except charities and the environment. I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m supposed to show interest in. (By the way, we didn’t talk about the work I do with orphans, but that’s OK. Maybe the next article.)” He closes with the words “I am just rambling. Thanks.”
Five minutes and thirty-seven seconds later, a second e-mail arrives. It reads, in its entirety, “I know I take all this crap too seriously. I should learn from Seth just to take it easy.”
I seriously suggest you read the GQ article. James is quite a fascinating man….at least I was charmed by him…

In James defense. If he was still that insecure and arrogant as an actor, he would never admit to this story. Also, Freaks and Geeks was about 10 years ago and he is actually good friends with Judd Apatow. The guy is very low-key.

im not into men but ive always said that if i was to ever date one james franco would be my dream guy. if you’ve seen his photos or read up on him you understand why. he is one beautiful man. im glad to see him coimng into the spotlight a little more. ive already seen pineapple express and cant wait to see what he comes out with next:)
