OlderBrangelina Twins Sell Big!
This just in from Women’s Wear Daily! Not surprisingly, the exclusive photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s newborn twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, sold big. How big? 2.6 million copies big!
According to the trade journal, “The issue is the biggest seller in seven years, and is the fourth highest newsstand seller in the magazine’s 35-year history, behind the Sept. 11 issue (4.1 million single copies), the issue covering Princess Diana’s death (3 million) and the one covering the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. (2.8 million). The June 19, 2006 issue with the exclusive baby pictures of Brad and Angelina’s first daughter, Shiloh, moved 2.2 million newsstand copies (perhaps the extra Pitt-Jolie baby provided a bigger draw this time).”

Actually People recovered it’s money plus more already..
People did NOT pay the whole 14 million. People + Hello paid together 14 million. These figures are just for People. Do the math 4.50X2.6 million = 11,700,000

“The issue’s 2.6 million newsstand sale is way above People’s average weekly newsstand sale of 1.5 million copies, but the issue has been on newsstands longer than a typical one. People released the issue on Aug. 4, two days before its regular newsstand drop date, and the issue will stay on stands for three weeks through Aug. 25. But People also raised its cover price for the special issue, to $4.49, or 50 cents more than its regular price. Along with the 2.6 million copies the issue is projecting to sell on newsstands, the babies also reached 2.3 million People subscribers, according to first-half numbers from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. ”
People magazine made $11,700,000 (2.6m x 4.50) in total from the sale.
The numbers are not final yet, another 3 days to run as sales of the magazine are on till 25 Aug. Sales may go up an additional 200k if there are people still waiting for their copies being delivered.
The numbers quoted do not show how much additional money People Magazine made by:
(a) increasing its subscription - we should get these numbers later in the year I think
(b) increasing its advertising rate for this issue and also future issues.
And of course the numbers do not show KUDOS value to People magazine and its website as the place to go for reliable celebrity news.
All told, it seems People made more than enough to cover share of the $14 million it paid for the photos.

Awwww… cheer up, honey, Huvane will round up another chump to date Jenny-poo for a couple of months and the tabloids will be all over her “hot new man”, and there will be cover photos in the tabloids of her desperately hanging onto this guy while he stares off into space looking monumentally bored, and all you Jenhags will start raving on here about how much hotter the new guy is than Brad, and when the new guy publicly dumps her after two or three months she will go into a frenzy and call Jane Pitt, and it will all be reported in Star magazine, and everybody will have a good laugh at poor Jenny-poo’s expense, and the beat will go on… and on.. and on…

But of course its not a surprise that it didnt beat covers which featured terrorist act like the 911 which left over 3k dead, and of course the untimely deaths of the world’s most famous celebs before Brad and Angie, Princess Diana and JFK, Jr.
I think it was money well spent! People spent only US$ 6m for the photos, its rumored Hello paid a bit more like US$ 8m for the international rights.
Clearly its money well spent! From the extra copies alone of 1.1m, People already made an extraUS$ 5m just from the newstand sales. In addition, its subscriber’s base grew from 2.1 m to 2.3m, so they probably made and extra US$ 5-7m cash from additional one year subscriptions.
And we cant even quantify how much in additional advert revenue it generated both on the magazines itself and on its online site.
Plus of course the intangible factor, which is the prestige and the media mileage that People always aim for in getting the exclusives for such high profile features.

The 2.6 is just People Mag. Add to that the sale of Hello U.K. and Hello Canada (the one I bought) and you will find that the 2.6 is not a true representation of the ‘Baby pix sales” Furthermore, the Internet hits on he bay pixs must have been the highest in history. Princess Diana’s deathe what 14 years ago? was not an Internet event, so one had to buy the mags. This Jolie-Pitt Double Exposure was an Internet event.
The haters are bitter about the stats. They couldn’t face the truth that the magazines were sold out. LOL.

melissa @ 08/22/2008 at 12:40 pm It did sell, but People did not get the return on their investment, they did not recoup the 14 million dollars paid, this magazine was on the shelf two days early and stayed on the shelf for three weeks, so actually this was not as much of a success as the folks at People were hoping for.

Melisssa , please use your brain. People only paid $7million. Hello Mag paid the other $7milion and probably made that back, hand over fist, as they had the rights to “the rest of then world”. And the magazines did not pay it to the Pitts. (this money will not show in the Pitts’ annual income) The mags made a donation each to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which means they got a hefty tax write-off.
The mags also made tons of money for online advertising and advertising in the magazine, which probably tripled. Plus, it was never about recouping money, this was all about prestige and positioning in the marketplace, for the mags.
