Brad Pitt and Zee: Thumbs Up!

Brad Pitt and daughter Zahara Jolie-Pitt wave and give a thumb’s up as they arrive at Cannes airport in Cannes, France on Tuesday.

Zahara Marley is now 3 1/2 and has really grown up to be a cutie-patootie!

Last week the pair also spent some alone time together as they went to the museum together.

Looks like Brad and Angie are making an effort to give each kid some individual time with each parent. Should make them each feel special despite having a large family and 5 siblings running around the house!

I don’t think Brad will go to Toronto. He commented in an interview that being in BAR actually “cost” him money. In that case he was generous to go to the Venice opening, but I think that will be the end of it. He will come out and promote Benjamin Button much more because he will probably earn more from it. defamer is funny-

Still, we don’t see this scenario playing out very well for either party, with Aniston’s awkward inquiries inevitably leading to the subject of new twins Knox and Vivienne, followed by Pitt’s response, “Couldn’t be better - here, I got pictures,” and his back-pocket extraction of a dog-eared copy of People’s Aug. 4 issue. “Here, you can have it. Show it to… What’s his name? Where are you going?” Oh, but for small miracles.

Brad Pitt’s role as filmmaker threatens to eclipse his actorly exploits and tabloid profile
Golden boy shines behind the scenes

Such was the case with “The Departed.” According to Pitt as well as another person involved in the film’s development, Plan B, using almost all of its discretionary funds plus money from then-host Warner Bros., outbid Harvey Weinstein for the rights to remake the 2002 Hong Kong film “Infernal Affairs.” The broker was Roy Lee, the go-between on Asian remakes such as “The Ring” and “The Grudge.” Pitt, the other person says, was “really enthusiastic about remaking the film, and he particularly fought for Matt Damon,” who plays crooked cop Colin Sullivan.

Plan B hired William Monahan in 2003 to write the script and courted director Martin Scorsese. Scorsese fell out a couple of times, and the casting of Jack Nicholson in a villain role vastly expanded from the original’s, altering the film’s budget. But finally, in early 2005, the film got the official greenlight at Warners. That March, Grey took the helm at Paramount and Pitt headed to Morocco to shoot “Babel” and other points on the globe to promote “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

Deciding they needed to enlist a producer to be on set, Plan B reached out to Graham King’s Initial Entertainment Group, which produced and co-financed Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator.” Thus, “The Departed” has four full producers: King, Scorsese, Grey and Pitt.

“That’s how it works with a lot of things,” Pitt explains. “We start them and then hand them over at some point. For example, we were involved early on in ‘God Grew Tired of Us’ (the Sundance prizewinning doc), but other producers then got involved.”

Since you’re digging around at Variet, I suggest you go back to Variety - Cinematical, Hollywood Elsewhere, HW Reporter, etc., and look for articles on Brad Grey fighting for a producer’s credit for The Departed when it was up for Best Pic. In those stories they state the sequence of how the movie got started - Brad P saw the original Hong Kong film and liked it. He suggested to Brad Grey, then his partner, that they bid on the rights. They won a highly competitive bidding war. Brad was busy making Troy and had M&MS and O12 on his plate. Brad Grey worked on the project on a daily basis - hiring a writer, getting Scorsese interested, etc. That’s why Brad P didn’t fight for a producer credit when the movie was up for an Oscar, but Brad G did and people were saying that he shouldn’t be doing it because he was now CEO at Par and it made him look greedy/power hungry because it was a Warner Brothers movie (that’s where Plan B’s production contract was before Brad’s divorce). Yes, Brad P had the initial idea, but on a hands-on basis, nuts-and-bolts, day-to-day basis, in the trenches putting the movie together or being on-set…BRAD WAS NOT THAT INVOLVED.

Notice how your Variety article says “Plan B” did this or did that. The article below states “Brad Grey” instead of “Plan B”. Since Variety was writing an article about Brad’s production company they’re not going to go out of their way to talk about Brad Grey. Kinda defeats the purpose of the article…and besides, Brad Grey leaving is one of the reasons it took so long for Brad to get X’s paws off his company! LOL. If Brad Grey had still be a partner - it’s 2 to 1 and they vote her out. Because he left shortly after their divorce announcement Brad bought BG’s share to ensure he could get X completely out of his life…

Grey loses push for credit on `Departed’

By Claudia Eller
January 04, 2007 in print edition C-1

And the Oscar may not go to

Grey on Wednesday lost an aggressive bid to be recognized by the Producers Guild of America as one of the producers of Martin Scorsese’s hit crime drama “The Departed.”

That means the producer-turned-studio chief has zero chance of walking away with an Oscar for best picture should the Warner Bros. film win unless he takes his case to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Even then, the academy, which will award the gold statuettes on Feb. 25, would have to overrule the guild’s decision.

But any such move to appeal carries big risks for Grey. Not only could it come off as an unseemly grab for personal glory to Hollywood insiders and his bosses at Viacom Inc., it would put him in direct competition with his own studio. Paramount’s “Dreamgirls” and “Babel,” which also received guild nominations, are strong contenders for the best picture Oscar.

In unveiling its annual nominations Wednesday, the guild deemed Graham King the film’s only eligible producer. The guild decided just before Christmas to reject’s Grey appeal to be named as a producer should “The Departed” be honored.

Grey was instrumental in getting “The Departed” made at Warner Bros. when he was a top Hollywood talent manager and producer, acquiring in 2003 the remake rights to the Hong Kong hit drama “Infernal Affairs.”

Grey helped Warner hire screenwriter William Monahan and sent the script to Scorsese. He also played a key role in helping negotiate the deals for such key cast members as Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg.

Last week, Scorsese and King wrote a joint letter to the guild, asking it to reconsider.

“Brad absolutely got it to be a go-movie and, in my opinion, for that he deserves credit,” King said in an interview. “However, I don’t make the rules and I do respect the guild’s decision making.”

Others who lobbied on Grey’s behalf included Warner Bros. production chief Jeff Robinov, who gave the studio’s endorsement to crediting Grey. Steven Spielberg, whose company DreamWorks SKG is now owned by Paramount, purportedly encouraged Scorsese to speak up because the guild’s decision seemed arbitrary to him.

Vance Van Petten, executive director of the Producers Guild, declined to comment on the decision, citing confidentiality rules.

The guild will hand out its awards Jan. 20, three days before Oscar nominations are announced.

Grey’s position as head of Paramount probably cost him the credit. He started work more than a month before the movie began production in April 2005. He recused himself from the hands-on producing duties and spent no time on the set.

According to guild rules, executives who work for a studio or financier of a film can’t earn a “Produced by” credit unless they “demonstrate a commitment of time and resources to the production of such significance that such commitment is tantamount to taking a leave of absence from his/her executive duties.” Grey wasn’t working for Warner Bros., but guild officials were concerned his Paramount job kept his focus elsewhere.

On the screen, Grey and Brad Pitt, his former producing partner, are listed as producers along with King. But under an agreement aimed at reining in the number of producers trying to grab Oscar glory, the academy accepts the Producers Guild recommendations as a stamp of approval.

Producers can appeal that decision to the Academy after it unveils its upcoming nominations Jan. 23. Producer Bob Yari last year made an unsuccessful attempt to retain credit on eventual Oscar winner “Crash.”

Grey declined to comment. People who have talked to the studio chief said he was angered by the guild’s decision but had not made up his mind whether to appeal to the academy. Scorsese reportedly advised Grey on Wednesday to appeal to the guild’s executive committee should “The Departed” be nominated.

If Grey does nothing, the Producers Guild’s decision stands, according to Academy Executive Director Bruce Davis.

Grey made a strong push to get the credit on “The Departed” before Christmas, after the guild decided during an arbitration procedure weeks earlier that King was sole producer. The guild arbitrates an average of 10 to 15 cases a year where a film has more than three producers or, in a case like Grey’s, when a producer holds another full-time job.

Each producer is asked to submit a three-page eligibility form specifying what functions he or she performed on the movie. About four dozen tasks, including selection of the director, securing financing and being present on the set, are divided into four categories.

Of those groupings, the guild weighs development and post-production at 30% each; and pre-production and actual production at 20% each. Essentially, a producer must be responsible for 50% of the tasks.

Grey’s proponents claim that under the guild’s own rules, the studio chief should have qualified for credit because of the heavy lifting he did on the front end. At the same time, King, who was hired by Grey and Warner Bros. shortly before “The Departed” began production, had no hand in the film’s development or pre-production but was on the set every day once cameras rolled.

Indeed, it was Grey who, with Warner, first approached King about producing the movie. King, who had made two previous films with Scorsese, “The Aviator” and “Gangs of New York,” was in the midst of signing an overall production deal with the studio.

Although he may not get an Oscar, Grey can still take comfort in receiving a piece of the profit for “The Departed,” which has grossed nearly $120 million domestically to date.

Grey did receive a nomination Wednesday from the guild, but in TV for “The Sopranos.” He has long been a producer of HBO’s hit mafia series, which he helped launch in his former role as head of the Brillstein-Grey management and production company.

A spokesman for the guild said that the eligibility rules for TV series and movies differ since television shows run for extended periods, whereas films are a one-shot deal.

THE KUDOS PLAY

David Fincher is whittling down “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” starring Brad Pitt as a man who ages backward, to about 2½ hours.

“Button” had a long and tricky gestation before Paramount gave it the greenlight. Producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall brought the movie to Fincher, who brought in Pitt, but cost and visual effects concerns bedeviled the project until Brad Grey took over as chairman of the studio and asked, “Do we have anything for Brad Pitt?”

Trained at ILM, which Fincher has called his film school, the filmmaker was well-suited to meeting the greatest challenge: creating a believable Button from his birth as an old man/baby to his death as a baby/old man. The use of Digital Domain CG and makeup effects to put Pitt’s head on varying-sized bodies is not an issue, judging by the 20 minutes of footage screened at the Telluride Fest Aug. 29 (which Fincher described as a “palate cleanser”).

Shot in New Orleans, the movie starts at the end of World War I and moves through Button’s life (WWII, romantic entanglements with Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton, etc.) all the way to his deathbed. It has taken the director some time to trim the movie to two hours and 38 minutes. He loses his final cut above 2½ hours, but the studio has worked with him. Meanwhile Fincher is taking his next, “Heavy Metal,” to Sony. (Par passed.)

Fincher’s previous film, “Zodiac,” grossed $180 million worldwide. The question is whether “Button” is a $150 million art film, or an emotionally accessible movie with broad appeal. Par exec Brad Weston insists it is both.

“It has an old-fashioned, epic, feel-good quality,” says Weston. “It’s not dark or brooding. It’s a big movie about life that will be appealing to everybody.”

One on-lot recruited test screening went well enough to push the studio to open the movie wide on Christmas Day.

ESTIMATED COST: $150 million-$170 million. The studio is sharing 50-50 with Warner Bros. In order to make back its costs (including marketing, especially through award season) the movie has to win over critics and audiences alike.

Harvard Students Tell of Gustav Evacuations

By PRATEEK KUMAR
Crimson Staff Writer

Harvard students throughout the Gulf Coast had varied experiences as Hurricane Gustav made landfall, with some able to evacuate and others stranded in the face of the natural disaster.

Ryan Williams ‘10, a resident of Baton Rouge, La. was one of many whose families were told to evacuate north as Gustav approached. But Williams noted that many of his friends and family members stayed behind.

“I have friends from the West Bank, 17th Ward, 9th Ward, and general surrounding towns around New Orleans,” Williams said by e-mail from the Baton Rouge airport. “Many stayed because they didn’t have means to leave, and were unsure how long they would be gone. Many stayed because they have little to nothing, and there is not much more they can leave.”

“Many stayed because they were not up to the ordeal and uncertainties of evacuation,” Williams continued. “It is hard to leave your home and everything you own, not knowing what you will return to.”

Volunteer help is appreciated

Last weekend the Make It Right Foundation solicited volunteers to assist with the grading, raking, sodding, planting and mulching for four of the six Make It Right homes in the Lower 9th Ward.

The turnout from Xavier University students, Volunteers of America, Habitat, Americorps and individuals as far away as Atlanta, Denver and Calgary, Canada, was overwhelming.

The spirit and dedication of the volunteers who continued working even in the rain was inspiring and heartfelt.

We salute them and want them to know that their generous gift of time will be long remembered.
