Jude Law Promotes Peace In Kabul

Jude Law promotes Peace Day at the UNAMA office in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan (UNAMA = United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan).

The 35-year-old British actor, along with British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, returned to Afghanistan after their successful mission last year. Once again, in conjunction with UNICEF and UNAMA, they made a ‘call to action’ 21 days before Peace Day, September 21st, an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence, in order to galvanize the people of Afghanistan to observe the Day.

“The extraordinary events in Afghanistan around Peace Day last year set an important precedent. Jeremy and I are returning to the country this year to help keep the momentum going,” said Jude. “As an ambassador for Peace One Day and as a filmmaker myself, I hope that my involvement will help the project to grow. I’m proud to be part of it.”

He added, “When I left Kabul last year, I was hugely moved not by the conflict that I have read so much about, but by the people’s courage and the people’s sense of hope. It seemed that they really want to make this day, the Peace Day, work. And they did. People recognize the day, because they recognize that lives could be saved.”

here is a link to unicef’s coverage of jude’s visit…..look…this is better than sitting on your hands.

http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/afghanistan_45455.html

Your comments Dolores are very a propos and well-thought out, I agree with you completely and the article fro UNICEF is great. Thank
GOD he’ is home already and the trip is over. Going into rravaged
places after it’s all over is not the same as going into a hot and active
war zone where innocent people are dying daily. That takes guts, and
dedication not to mention in this case a true desire to help and love of
their fellow man. What hurts the most as we read the news each day is the continued attacks againt children. Fighting wars and taking
your anger out on the most innocent in our siciety is indefensible and
should call everyone to action. I don’t doubt the motivees of these men they have repeatedly shown where their heart is. This is not the frst charity that Jude has wholehaartedly thrown his face, his name and his money into. HE has a conscience. The least we can do from our comfortable homes is help that effort become the total reality these visionaries seek.. (By the way Thank you, JARED , you always
come through for us.)

Aside from this Peace One Day that jude is promoting he has been quietly involved in a lot of charities no fanfare at all. Make a Wish Foundation is one where he personally picks up the kids(who have terminal diseases)and takes them to movies, concerts, sports and other events and goes with them.

He went to Africa with Sadie and his kids and directed a play for Christmas in an orphanage. He also brought gifts for the kids and his own kids stayed, played with the orphans and distributed the gifts. No paps or write ups whatever and the only reason I learned about it was because of a blog by one of the volunteers who said they were so down to earth and they absolutely loved their stay there.

He is an ambassador for Prince Charle’s charity for kids and is very active in it. He has helped fundraise a lot of charities and he never, ever mentions any of these. Jeremy sought his help to promote his documentary to get more interest in his cause and Jeremy has worked for 10 years with almost no help and using his own funds. Kudos to him and now to Jude.

While I stated in an earlier post that I’m sometimes skeptical about how charitable funds are actually used, I don’t really find myself questioning the sincerity of celebrities who promote worthy causes. I look at myself first and think of the time and effort I put into things I believe in…which is quite a small amount, I’m afraid…actually below small. I mostly give money (again, I’m afraid to say, a small amount…I’m not rich), which takes very little effort on my part. So if a celebrity devotes any time in bringing attention to a cause and does that cause some good, I don’t really care why they do it. I don’t think a celeb is “bad” if they don’t support causes, and I don’t think they are “saints” if they do…they’re made up of the same thing we are…the good and the sometimes not-so-good.

I have to say, though, that I can’t see someone frivolously deciding to make 2 trips to Afghanistan…I think an act like that would surely entail a strong belief in the cause being promoted. Jeremy has worked at this for a long, long time…I’m sure he’s glad for Jude’s support.

@Natalie Smith

After their visit in July 2007 in the eastern part of Afganisthan (which is the most dangerous part in the land by the way), the POD organization and with the help of aid community managed to vaccinate 1.4 million children against Polio.

So, I think there is a direct practical benefit from this act.

lori joyce @ 09/05/2008 at 9:15 am

The vaccinating of 1.4M children is the kind of thing that I want to hear about. They should be talking more about this in addition to just saying they are in favor of peace for one day. I would have a lot more respect for the organization if I heard more about things like vaccinating children on this day of peace rather than concerts in London and speeches given.

Look, I’m not here to persuade anyone to agree with me, but for many fans (including myself), Jude is a very lovely person with very good intentions, and we believe in him .. if he says he’s proud being part of this project .. why we couldn’t be a little more proud of that, too? I am, absolutely! pointing out that peace will not be “built” in just one day .. the benefits may require time and he is cleary giving his best helping all this people.
Love Jude ♥
Let us support him.

THANKS Mr. JARED!

Did He cut His hair again?!!! But , I still adore the man, no doubt and on that top pic He looks so divine that I almost fainted, honest! That hint of a beard looks incredibly sexy on Him!!! I just miss his golden curls so much!!!

GODBLESS & GODSPEED!

Lori, I think they did talk about the vaccinations and other stuff in their press conference.

Absolutely right, Sarah #57. People can choose to support what he and Gilley are trying to do or they don’t. I really don’t need a lecture, here of all places, on how to choose which ‘charity’ to support.

Besides, this hardly seems like a vanity project. Both men are sincere and committed. Even without the visible results (e.g. vaccination), it’s still laudable. They’re not asking the public for money or donate anything. They’re asking you to do something on Sept 21 to stop the violence, even if it’s as small as not yelling at your kids, because that may be the start of the long road to peace. What is there to criticize about that?

It is easy to sneer. Much harder to take action.

MIMI prism @ 09/06/2008 at 9:29 am

Those two gentleman are so incredibly brave and compassionate! Bless their hearts! I’m very proud of Jude, of both actually, I do believe that their commitment is true and genuine, is not an easy task what they are doing, as a matter of fact ,is friggin scary, frankly! Hats off to them both!

Exactly, sweet Daphne #60 - i’m glad you can see by this side! :)
and hello guys, jude is a dad and he definitely knows what is happening with all those people he has seen .. he certainly would not commit himself in this project if he wasn’t really concerned about the current situation of the world, about the future of his children and about the future of all these childrens that need our help to grow up in a better place … Love Jude ♥

Now more than ever we need each other to fight for a better world … ♥

so, again: we need each other to fight for our rights, to understand our world and how to change it. … ♥ ;)

* Sorry about my english ..
i love the english language, but unfortunately i am not an expert.

Thank you Pole for the radio broadcast. This is a very well-articulated report and while I wish it were a video, some very clear answers were
given explaining JUde’s role and the value of someoane who is a celeb and also a producer and brave enough to go there putting himself i n danger but recognizing the fact that the cause is so important for the future of humanity that it’s the only thing he can do. I believe. BRAVO to Jude and Jeremy.

DOLORES CRAEG @ 09/10/2008 at 5:09 pm

once again i still think anybody, celebrity or not who puts themselves in harms way and has children is NOT doing this for personal gains but rather as a way to help….jude is a very generouis man in so many ways….he’s personally involved……..i can’t knock anyone who uses their celebrity for good.
