Jordin Sparks - MTV VMAs 2008
Jordin Sparks (in Betsey Johnson) arrives at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The 18-year-old American Idol champ, who finished off her look with Nicole Khristine jewels (Rockstar Earrings and a Faith Ring), sat in the VIP section at the Chateau Marmont after the In Touch Weekly’s Icons and Idols after-party.
The 18-year-old singer spoke out against host Russell Brand for joking about the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings. She told the crowd, ‘I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

actually, if your a christian having sex before marriage does make you a $lut. and I really appreciate her for standing up like that, Russel was not funny and as soon as he turned those awards political I changed it. His jokes weren’t funny and were offensive. I thought the awards were stupid and totally bombed. Try better next time MTV. And why make fun of people better than you? GO JB, Go Jordin! :) I look up to you!

Someone above said that we should “re-think casual sex with your boyfriends/girlfriends”. Uh, hello? If you are in a committed relationship with someone you care about, who is to say that that sex doesn’t mean anything? I’m sorry, but who the hell are you?
You are probably some 12-14 year old who has no concept of love, compatibility, emotional expression and yes that includes SEX. You can continue to believe that sex is dirty, unholy, wrong blah blah blah.
But have fun on your wedding night, cause it ain’t gonna be magical - there won’t be unicorns, fireworks and rainbows - there will be limbs in awkward places, secretions that will surprise you and oh yeah, if you find a guy who’s a virgin too, you’ll have 30 seconds of lackluster intercourse. OH yeah, and maybe just maybe you’ll find out your husband has a very small *ahem*.

Russell Brand was a horrible host…most of what he said was not even funny. And his repeated comments about the Jonas Brothers got old.
I think it was really awesome when Jordin Sparks made her comment…i was cracking up! It probably could have been said with more tact but still she stood up for what she believes and what many others believe in.

I think that Jordan was a little out of line in saying that comment on stage like that. John Legend looked a little embarrassed.
A lot of celebrities spoke about the purity rings but it was during private one-on-one interviews. Not on stage with an attitude. Russell Brand might’ve taken it too far as well but it wasn’t enough for her to cop an attitude about it. IMO
I mean it’s great that she’s standing up for what she believes in, and I have nothing against purity rings or the people who wear them. But, again, her comment wasn’t necessary at the time it was said

I’m guessing that the majority of the people who say he isn’t funny are American and don’t get British humour. Russell is one of Britain’s best comedians and a lot of people probably don’t get/understand him because he’s quick and his vocabulary is out of this frickin world!

Oh spare me the usual bullshyt that Americans don’t get British humor. I love Ricky Gervais and Sacha Baron Cohen, but Russell Brand is not funny. First of all, who is he to lecture an American audience on US politics and who to vote for? I seem to recall you Brits getting your panties in a bunch when you were criticized by the Chinese for your dismal closing ceremony program. Nobody likes to be lectured about their country from a foreigner.
The Jonas Brother’s criticism is par for the course. Chris Rock did the same to Justin T, NSync and Britney. However, the Jonas Bros. are young and it was inappropriate to single them out and hammer away at them all night. A lot of the tv audience were impressionable teens, what kind of message is Brand sending out? People defending his comments are the same ones who called Jamie Lynn Spears a ****!
If Americans don’t get the Brit humor the simple solution would be to keep your comedians in Britain and Europe. By the reaction last night, I am sure the audience at the VMAs wished you had.
Go Jordin! If the stupid host didn’t bring it up so often, this wouldn’t be such a big deal! My gosh, every other word had a sexual meaning to it! It was ridiculous! Plus him bashing on Bush?!?!?!?! What the heck?!?!?! He isn’t even American!!!!!! And FYI, your prime minister at the time, Tony Blair, he was on Bush’s side the whole time! So he has no room to talk!
I was very, very happy that Jordin said that, Russell deserved to be put in his place. His jokes got to the point where they weren’t even funny anymore.
I was very disappointed in the VMA’s this year. The best act easily was the Jonas Bros. It’s a shame they didn’t win anything…
the entire comedy routine of the vma’s was sexually-based. and honestly, why couldn’t they have gotten someone from the United States to host? I personally can’t decide which host was worse; Russel Brand at MTvVma’s or Miley Cyrus at TeenChoice08

I’m sorry but I think this was highly ignorant of her. Not every person that doesn’t wear a promise ring is sleeping around. Some virgins are still thinking out a promise like that or just don’t want to make it. + It was a joke people cracked jokes on T.I. and Britney spears you don’t see them flipping out. And look at all the other celebrities who have made the same promise…. Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson… it doesn’t always end up with that person keeping there promise or staying with the person they waited to have a sexual relationship with. Shes just taking that whole “role-model” thing too far since she obviously shouldn’t make kids feel if they don’t make a promise there *****.
Good for Jordin Sparks. She’s a smart girl with a good head on her shoulders. Rusell Brand was being a complete jerk and lost any respect I would ever have for him. It’s not okay to bash people for their religious beliefs because they are different than yours.
MTV made a terrible choice letting Rusell Brand host the VMAs. It was the worst award show I have ever seen and he was completely anti-American. He brought the entire show down and I was very disappointed. I hope they choose a true American celebrity next year instead.

Good for you Jordin! I was so ticked at what Russell Brandon had said! The Jonas Brothers are such talented, sensitive boys and if they want to keep their virginity until marriage, I think that’s awesome! Russell Brandon had no right whatsoever to criticise them like that in front of all of those people.

I thought Russell was funny most of the time, but he overdid it a little with the sex jokes and making fun of JB. Jordin could have worded her frustration in a different manner, there was no need to imply that people who have sex are *****. Everyone has their own beliefs and to each his own.
