Zac Efron to Star in ‘Dreamcoat’?
Zac Efron is possibly looking to make his West End theater debut with the part of Joseph in the musical, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat according to the Mirror.
The 20-year-old High School Musical actor reportedly spoke with Andrew Lloyd Webber about the part. Lee Mead, who currently plays Joseph, will be leaving in January.
An inside source commented, “It is a marriage made in musical heaven. Zac loves the role and is keen to clock up some stage time in London. For Hollywood actors a spell in the West End offers credibility and can be extremely lucrative!”

He spent a good bit of time in UK last winter and I know he loved it there and would like to go back. Plus he wants to do London theatre work so this is perfect. I dont know “Joseph” but I have no doubt he could make it great.

Wow i guess the predictions are all falling into place. Zac leaves to London, Vanessa back in LA all alone, how much testing can her little physique handle. This will be a true test to their relationship whether it ends or prevails. It will be interesting on Zac’s new partner or female friendship now that HSM3 is over. It will also be interesting who Miss Vanessa will become male friends with? But then again they are both still young and soon both of them won’t be in demand to the younger crowd so this kind of an exit is GREAT…. the silent exit so the next time you see both of them whether together or apart they’ll be like new news again oh how fun is hollywood.

This information contradicts Zac’s saying he didn’t want to have a singing career. The play Joseph is a major singing role. And, no offense to Zac, but he is NOT a singer.
Lee Mead, the guy currently in the role has been in Phantom of the Opera. He IS a great singer.

i think he should take it even though i think he’s not much of a singer anyway… but if he does take it this would test his relationship with vanessa to see how far their love is willing to go.

as a fan i support whatever he decides. but i think veering away from musicals at this point in his career is a better move for him, and if the reviews for M&OW are any indication, he is more than ready to take on more dramatic roles. but in the end its his choice.
london would also be good for him as it seems as if he would get a break from the relentless paps, so that is always a good thing. if this rumor is true, and he gets the role (rumor is its still in talks) i would assume that he would sign on for a finite run. that is what “hollywood” actors do when they take a role on broadway, especially if its an established show.
unlike most rumors, this will prove itself one or another very soon, as the actor he would replace is due to leave the show in january.
as far as his relationship with vanessa, they’ll work it out. that’s what couples do.

I have to disagree with those who say that Zac isn’t a singer…he may not have cut his own record yet butthat is because that is his choice…he has been offered a record deal by no less than simon cowell and simon knows real talent when he sees one..
I have to say that i have only heardhim sing a few songs from HSM 2 and Hairspray but based on that i have been amazed at how souldful he is as a singer, has the ability to sing a varirty of genres from the ballads of HSM 2, a R and B type like Bet on It, and he sings theatre style too like the songs he did on hairspray.. he has excellent phrasing, has a wide range and can sound very soulful and seductive as welllike the way he sang Everyday…
he is amuch better singer than he would give himself credit for and I believe he is saying that simply because at this point he feels he wants to concentrate on his acting career.. but the truth is he happens to be a actor who also happens to be a great singer, and he can even develop that singing further if he wants to…he can actually take it to the next level and certainly mr.cowell took notice of that and not simply because he was popular from HSM…
If he does leave I will be happy beacause he treats Vanessa like crap and they probably broke up or she broke up with him espiacally after the hookup he had with Ashley.He needs to leave Vanessa so she can find a MAN and so he wont break her heart but he probably did already. I have to say that a perfect example of how great a singer he is was how perfect he sang It takes Two from Hairspray…braodway style, perfect phrasing and intonation, diction and amazing energy..nothing was oversang and he was simply amazing…that wasnot an easy song to sing and that is an example of what he can do with his voice and he will get better with further training and a vocal coach…
I believe his voice is still changing and has not yet reached full maturity but will probably get deeper as he gets older…his vsinging voice will sound even more appealing and sensual as he gets more mature…i have already seen some changes from hairspray to HSM 2…there was somuch soul when he sang everyday (which I love) and ofcourse the very romantic way he sang you arethe music in me….i cannot imagine how some of his fans will not see his singing talent and how much he can do with his voice if he wants to.,…
And you have to remember that Zac’s training started in theatre as a young boy and he is a veteran of being a supporting role in many thatre shows when he was growing up…he has also completed a full course on musical theatre and he will really go back to his first love, which is musical theatre…

Actually Zac does have a lot of potential for doing musicals on stage. Plus, in a few recent interviews he has spoken about how much he loves singing which I found interesting. We will have to wait and see what happens. As far as Vanessa is concerned, they both have been so supportive of each other in personal and professional ways. The different in him going to Europe now and when he was there earlier this year is that if Vanessa is not working full time on a movie on some location, she could go spend time with Zac in London. They have both said in the past how much they liked London and they do get more privacy there. I think they have seriously tried to gain some privacy in the last couple months for themselves after the madhouse they faced when coming back to LA once they got done filming HSM3. The craziness they faced then NOBODY could endure for long.
I think when Zac was with Vanessa on her tour they enjoyed just being out and around without constant paps being all around even though fans knew who they were. I don’t think they really mind that but when they can’t even go out to eat without paps being in their face is another matter. In London they wouldn’t have to deal with that as much—MAYBE.

I love the show and I think he can pull it off with a lot of hard work which he’s no stranger to.
I would particularly like it for his career as it would really expose him not just to a much wider audience but to the intellectual set here in the UK and to the glorious world of European theatre. The talent here is phenomenal and he’ll certainly benefit from rubbing shoulders with such talented unacclaimed performers, he has already had a taste of Christian Mckay and there are many more like him, Zac can really flesh out his career with this experience.
On a personal level, as a biased UK resident, I think it would do him good to live outside the US for a while. It’s easier to travel within Europe and he can really develop, learn about other cultures and people and broaden himself without all the celebrity hype and paps.
If he takes it, he and Van are more than capable of sorting themselves out, they both love London, love to travel and love musicals, the last time they were here in the UK, they went to see Billy Elliott.
I’m hoping V gets a chance to play Maria in West Side Story and experience theatre and stage work. Whatever they choose to do, they’ll always support each other and I’ll always support them.

IF and I mean IF this is true, I think this could be a great move for Zac career wise. It is something he is familiar with as far as musical theatre and it will give him a chance to showcase his voice. I think with a voice coach, he should have no problems. His voice has gotten a lot stronger since it is no longer changing . He did a super job in Hairspray and from what little I have heard in HMS3 , he really seems to have a much more mature voice. As far as Vanessa is concerned, she could stay with him while not working herself or try to find something in theatre there herself. I just noticed that West Side Story is playing in London. Boy if she could land a role in that, she has always wanted to play Maria. Any way what ever he decides is his business and I support him. Their relationship will stand the test of time I’m sure. Too bad Vanessa just bought a house if this is in fact true ,and he takes the role. Another plus , as others have said, is that the paps are not going to be on him like in LA. Daniel Radcliff was just saying something on TV about the paps in America compared to London being far more invasive and annoying.

But I have some Nays. Nay, because I feel he’d be better off focusing on just acting right now. We KNOW he can dance and sing, but acting is something he needs to develop more, as he is an adult now. Nay, for doing another musical so soon after HSM 3 and Hairspray. Too much of a risk for being typecast. Nay to London (no offense to naomi!), because there are wonderful theatre opportunites here in the states- he does NOT need to go to London for that. For example, here in MA, there is summer theatre in the Berkshires and stars come all the time for these roles. It hones their acting skills, and they can spend wonderful time away from LA.

wow he is going back to his roots i vote yeah. Many others have gone before him in that role…Jason Donovan, Donnie Osmond etc. They have all gone onto bigger and better things so good luck and enjoy the musicals they are timeless
No one can replace Lee! I saw him in April and he’s totally irreplaceable! He’s amazing as Joseph. So amazing on Any Dream Will Do (youtube him!!!!) and on stage, AMAZING! BUT if he has to be replaced, then he should be replaced by the gorgeous, sexy, totally f-able Zac Efron! While I love Zac, I would love to see in Equus (aka naked) instead. Haha. That’d be a show I’d buy tickets to every night. He’d be great as Joseph, but no one can beat the vocals of Mr. Lee Mead.
Btw, I think you should start putting on posts of Lee, he’s HUGE in the UK because of the search (Any Dream Will Do) and he is after all the winner! He’s hot, he’s a great singer (his cd is awesome!) and there’s a bunch of gossip (he’s dating one of the judges from the show, Denise van Outen!!!) I love Lee! But I do love Zac more!
Hmm, working with Andrew Lloyd Webber is certainly a big draw and if this is true then it would be hard to turn down. And moving to London for a while might not be such a bad idea. I used to live in London and celebrities there just get on with and have more of a “normal” life than their counterparts in L.A. So not a bad idea.
However, I think he should try and move away from the song and dance routine. Me and Orson Welles is a good step forward and he should build on his dramatic chops instead of doing something familiar. He has great potential and doing another musical might not be too great a step from the familiar.
But it’s good to see him stretching away from the HSM franchise and everyone in it. Time to grow up and I’m glad he’s even being linked with such projects.

Um, I’m really not sure about this you guy’s, speaking as someone who work’s in the British Theatre Industry, I dont think Zac would take on this role.
He has worked extremely hard on a number of Musical roles in the past few year’s on HSM and Hairspray but I dont think he would activeley be looking to do another role in a Musical for a while.
I know that over the year’s Actor’s have enjoyed role’s in the West End and to Critical Acclaim which has benefitted their career’s but Zac as Joseph? He definately has a really good voice but could he keep up with the demanding and tiring matinee and eveing performances of 5-6 day’s a week, he might permanently damage his vocal chords.
He is now in the middle of releasing a few film’s that require him to challenge himself in other way’s like Me and Orson Welles and Seventeen Again so I think in my opinion he would stay clear of stereotyping himself too much in one type of role.
Saying that if Zac has expressed an interest to be in any role in the West End, I woud definately go and see him…lol

I’ve thought and worried about the same thing when it comes to his vocal chords. Even though he has sung a lot over the past 3 years it has only been for short periods of time in regards to how it would be if he was doing theater. You really have to project your voice and as you say it it equals 7-8 performances per week. He would have have one day off per week—at least that the way it works on Broadway. Even Vanessa who has been vocal training since she was very young has had off about every third day on her concert tour. I don’t think it is just to travel but to give her vocal chords a rest.

He is a fabulous singer. Try to imagine Zac singing Phantom of The Opera and then think about whether or not he would even be considered for this role.
It’s not a good idea to believe every rumor you hear, especially when it comes form a British tabloid.
Besides, Zac has said he does not want to pursue a music career, that instead he wants to focus on acting. With HSM3 out of the way, he has two non-musical movies coming out next year–17 Again and MAOW
If he were to consider a role in the West End theater, I think it would be a dramatic one, not a musical.

I am surprised at how narrow minded some people are…and as for not singing in HSM he didn’t there but he sang on HSM 2and Hairspray and in my opinion has a much better singing voice actually than Drew Seeley..yes Zac can sing very well and if as a fan if you perhaps took notice of his singing in Hairspary like It Takes two and Ladies Choice that is enough to prove that he can SING broadway style as in It Takes two and even rocker style in Ladies Choice…
It ’seven shocking to see how some willthink that starring in a musicalin the west end willspell disaster for him…it is a great honor in my opinion to be even considered for the role (should the rumor be true) and that shouldspellbigger and brighter things for him….he’svery young only 21 this year and he wants to show the world that he can shine in whatever he decides to do…he is young, healthy and has themindset of a competitive person so whycan’t he do it….working 5-6 days a week doing theatre is very doable for someone as determined as him…if older theatre people can do it a young and healthy person can, especially if they have the desire to do so…

but i’d like to point out to the people who are defending zac’s singing in Hairspray and HSM2…
movie soundtrack singing is done in in a recording studio with dirrerent cuts editing and usually takes a while to perfect a song that is wothy of being released.
stage singing is live infront of an audience and doing one, even two, up to three shows a day can be very damaging to the vocal chords…there is always the off chance that his voice will not sound as good as HSM2 & Hairspray.
If Zac wants to do it then people just need to deal with it

Rumours are rumours until there’s an official announcement. Remember the last one about Zac being considered for the Prince of Persia and before that was Footloose. How about the one with Zac reprising his role in Hairspray 2. Well, Nikki’s court hearing is still pending and things have been pretty pretty quiet lately with her. I hope all is well. It would be a crying shame as she is such a talented performer.
It’s nice to see friendly debate going on here regarding Zac’s next career move! Seems to be pretty split between the yays and nays. I think that Zac is being very cautious with his role choices, and will do what he thinks is best! And I daresay, I know us fans will support whatever he decides to do!!
I wanna see him play the role daniel radcliffe is doing in Eqqus.

Looks like it’s all a rumour. he definitely wants to concentrate on films according to this site. The site is still tabloid but I’m more inclined to believe them as concentrating on films is more in line with what Zac has stated he wants to do.
While I still think the experience of European theatre would be good for him if that is what he wants to do, I’m quite relieved it’s not at this point in his career as he is still starting out and needs to build up a bankable and credible resume as a serious thespian.
He has a lot of potential and I can’t wait to see them crystallize. He’ll be fine.

I just saw the same article Naomi posted on another site. I tend to believe it since they were quoting Zac at a screening for his movie in Toronto. Whatever Zac does next, I’m sure his fans will support him and he will not disappoint.

I’ve had some problems the past few days with comments not showing up, etc. I’m particularly having problems even accessing Zac’s threads for some reason.
Over the past couple months I’ve had some problems with Just Jared’s site over several different things. I don’t know why. Too many ads, I think.

I think JJ deleted my comment because it was an interview with a columnist on the Daily Mail, which had direct quotes from Zac that he was NOT going to do theater.
He’s quoted as saying he wants to focus on movies.
The guy also had a great review of MAOW. His name is Baz Bamigboye. I’ll try to post the interview again and see if it stays.
Young Zac’s done Welles for himself

Zac Efron seems right at home on stage in the movie Me And Orson Welles, which looks at how Welles put together the famous Mercury Theatre production of Julius Caesar in the Thirties.
Zac plays a young man who manages to get a small part in the play and finds himself acting opposite Welles.
‘It wasn’t Shakespeare, but my background is theatre. I did several plays and musicals before my High School TV days,’ Zac told me after a screening of Richard Linklater’s film.
Welles’s Julius Caesar was, of course, in New York.
‘Our New York was in England and on the Isle of Man, so that’s the closest I’ve been to Broadway,’ Zac laughed.
He made his name in the Disney High School Musical TV shows, but he’s keen to do other things, and he’s impressive in Me And Orson Welles.
‘I would love to return to the theatre, but for now I want to concentrate on films,’ he said.
When he was in the UK, he was working double duty, shooting Me And Orson Welles and doing tracks for High School Musical 3, but he did get a night off to see Speed-the-Plow at the Old Vic, which he described as ‘awesome’.
By the way, Christian McKay, a British actor, plays Welles and he’s superb.

Performing in the west End is a huge deal if he does get the part he should so take it. Its an opportunity of a lifetime, especially an Andrew Lloyd Webber piece.

I haven’t heard that but I wouldn’t be surprised if Zac was there for Vanessa. Maybe they can get in some sight-seeing and relax for a couple days. They both deserve it before all the travelling and promotions start for HSM3. Which city in Mexico did she end her tour, I forgot?

I completely understand where you are coming from but the comment I made earlier about his slim chances at being able to do 5-6 days a week are very realistic in today’s British and Broadway Musicals.
Vocal Chords can be irreprably damaged by singing on a constant basis and If like Zac you are used to singing in Edited Studio based enviroments and a one off Time’s Square 30 min show, it is just not enough to show you have to vocal stamina needed for a theatre production such as this.
I would absolutely love to see Zac in this type of role and I this he would do well if he did only 1-4 shows a week which we all know is not how it works but also as I said before doing HSM 1,2,3 and Hairspray mean’s that If he chose his projects wisely he would not go for a Musical project for quite some time as he does not want to be seen as being stereotyped.
I too would prefer to see him come to London and show us his acting chops in some other way like Equuis or something along those lines.
Hollywood is definately beckoning quickly for Zac and I think he would want to stay close to home for now to make sure he is well and truly planted in the Film Industry.
Anyway, West End Theatre productions normally tell the press about any changes to the cast within a space of 3 months so hopefully this rumour can be put to rest sooner rather than later.
