OlderAmerica Ferrera: Gossip Girl Is Bad!
Ugly Betty star America Ferrera covers the October 2008 issue of Seventeen, which hits newsstands on September 16th. Here are some interview highlights:
On being friends with Sisterhood costars Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel: “One of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had with girl relationships was working with them on Sisterhood. I’d worked with other girls before and it was pretty catty. But this time, I thought, I don’t want to feel judged or defensive. So before we started shooting, I was like, I’m just going to show up to work and be professional – not their best friend. But a couple of weeks into shooting, Amber and I started talking. She’s a hippie and I thought we had nothing in common – and now she’s one of my closest friends!”
On Gossip Girl being a bad influence: “Close, genuine female relationships are not what generally gets depicted in movies and TV shows. Like, if you’re watching The Hills or 90210, all the backstabbing shapes the way we act – you go to school, and you think your job is to find a sworn enemy and be jealous of each other. I mean, I love Blake [Lively]; she’s a wonderful friend of mine, but shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean.”

i’m totally agree with america, i mean, gossip girl is maybe the most shallow tv show i’ve ever seen, and is not worth watching, come on! who the hell cares with who’s sleeping blair every week? gossip girl’s message is just: kill yourself because you’re not as rich and gorgeus as me.

I agree w/ America, if people get influenced to dress like the characters they see on TV they will also act like them, but the truth is there are mean girls/people everywhere.

I don’t care what she says.. because I love gossip girl, but I can’t believe she is saying that, I mean have respect for Blake Lively, she’s your friend, come on girl! And I truly think she is so jealous, Blake is absolutly known now that she plays Serena on gossip girl, I’m from Argentina and everyone knows her, but.. America Ferrera, very few people saw The sisterhood.. and Ugly betty ¿?
I agree with her to a certain extent but personally I dont think she said it with good intentions. I think she is jealous of Blake Lively. It was an OBVIOUS stab against her. I have seen ugly betty but dont watch it on a regular basis and I have never seen gossip girl but Blake is a lovely girl and America, well not so much.

Hello, she has an Emmy, why would she be jealous of BL?! If you have an Emmy, the more power to you and the more power to you, you take control of interviews. It’s just how the celeb hierarchical world is.
Gossip Girl is entertainment. TV is entertainment. Big deal if GG teaches morals or not. The show rocks and extremely entertaining. Ugly Betty is not.
Tv Viewer, just because she has an emmy that means she cant be jealous of someone who doesn’t? especially a really BEAUTIFUL young woman who is the it girl of the moment. My guess is that girls like Blake makes America feel insecure.
America needs to STFU. A lot of us grew up with 90210 and daytime soaps and we never felt the need to emulate those types of characters.
We didn’t watch those shows in order to get tips on how to live our lives. Please. She needs to shut up, seriously. STFU!
I dont see what the problem is she has a right to say how she feels, and everybody keeps saying well shes not a good friend because she doesnt like GG, well i dont like everything my bff does and being a friend i tell her. If america is so straight forward and her and blake are friends how does anyone know if she didnt tell her like girl your show is stupid or whatever, or maybe there not even friends at all. But anyway’s when it comes down to it i doubt she jealous of GG i mean shes got awards, her peers give her respect, she’s got a future, blake well lets just say look what happened to the original cast of 90210. are you kidding me? I wish my best friend was as nice as Blair is to Serena! I don’t think I have ever had a friend who hasn’t stabbed me in the back or the front. I actually prefer the back now because I know it’s happening but they don’t get the satisfaction of seeing me hurt. Not that I don’t get my revenge. People are naturally combative. If you don’t fight you wont survive.
People need to differentiate the difference between real life and TV. After seeing her rolling her eyes as her supposed “friend” was talking, i think she’s rude and jealous. She can sit there and say the shows condition people to be mean, but her acting in such a way is MEAN.

Don’t you just hate it when actors start getting all preachy like they’re actually doing something to make the world a better place? I have more respect for actors who do understand that they’re just there to entertain, not preach. Now I don’t particularly like the show but I have a lot of friends, all straight-A students, who do like it and I don’t see them backstabbing each other. I don’t judge them for it either. It’s a TV show. It was meant for entertainment and it doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t, unlike some over-rated & unoriginal network comedy show we know .
Get off your high horse, America. You’re just an actress, nothing more. You’re not saving lives or doing something to end world hunger. You act in a show that you don’t even write. You might think your “Betty” is a good role model for teenage girls. Maybe you are to some but you’re definitely not mine.
