WEEKEND UPSET?: Moviegoers choose BURN AFTER READING with $6.5M Friday & a likely $19M weekend! Perry’s PREYS in the hunt for #1 and RIGHTEOUS KILL a close for #3!
by Steve Mason
Steve Mason is now on Facebook.

The weekend box office horserace is a photo finish between the brothers behind No Country For Old Men, Atlanta’s entrepreneurial Gospel-infused maverick and a couple of old guys mailing it in. And the winner appears to be The Coen Brothers and Burn After Reading (Focus), although it is very close, and I cannot rule out a win for Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys (Lionsgate).

This is a bit of a shocker since Joel and Ethan have never been a sure thing at the box office, but the movie has scored an estimated $6.51M on Friday, and that should translate to an excellent $19M for the weekend. The quirky, comic spy film, starring Oscar winners George Clooney, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton along with Academy Award nominees Brad Pitt and John Malkovich, has grabbed excellent reviews (77% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), and it will easily be the biggest-ever opening for the Coens, surpassing Lady Killers ($12.6M) and Intolerable Cruelty ($12.5M). It’s safe to say that the critical and box office success of No Country For Old Men has pushed the brothers into a more commercial league.

The #2 movie for the day and probably the weekend looks like Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys (Lionsgate), which generated an estimated $6.35M on its opening day. Perry’s core audience, Christian, middle-class, African-American women, are showing up as expected, and the movie should hit $18M for the 3-day. The maverick filmmaker’s pictures are tough to project so the number could creep higher over the weekend, but I still think it will fall short of Burn.

It appears that Righteous Kill (Overture), the teaming of Oscar winners Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro, has scored $6.23M Friday despite being critically savaged (23% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). It will likely get a 15%-20% Saturday increase from adult moviegoers, and it should finish 3rd for the weekend with about $17.7M. That’s better than Lerner’s 88 Minutes starring Pacino this spring, which managed only $16.9M in its entire US theatrical

The worst reviews of the weekend were reserved for Diane English’s remake of George Cukor’s The Women (Picturehouse) with only 10% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. That has not dampened the movie’s appeal with women who are showing up in greater-than-anticipated numbers, making it the #4 movie of the day and weekend. With Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Eva Mendes heading up a cast of some of America’s best actresses, this movie has paid off with $4M on Friday, and a likely $12.8M opening weekend. It’s not exactly Sex & The City, but it proves that there is clearly an audience for estrogen-filled, female-driven product.

Hey Shrink, the only thing that is overexposedandstupid is your idol’s c*oochie !

Why don’t YOU write an essay about that ? After all, it is on the verge of becoming a public property, the way she is exposing it left and right and FOR FREE for whole the world to see ! Even professional p*rostitues make it pay for it.

But your trashoid bimboish idol is so stupid that she is exposing it left and right in every position possible, on the beach, going out from a car, with a bikini, her p*anties, her t*ongs ! If that is not overexposed and nasty i don’t know what it is !

She is a piece of cr*p and she handles herself like a white trailler trash ! No wonder that her fans have to resort to tricks to deflect the attention of their falling star. Nothing to rejoice in her side, so why not talk sh*t about the true successful ones, huh ?

Nice try, but you just exposed your DESPERATION, just like your idol !

Our thoughts & prayers are with the people of Texas. vicki, I hope you & your family are safe.
vicki if you see this let us know if you are ok.
Burn After Reading is a good laugh therapy for all the haters. Check it out & you will agree with me. Brad is hilarious & Clooneys’ invention it was a surprised, no wonder it’s rated R.

Does anybody know anything about Woman’s Day magazine from Australia?

Found this interview online this morning on several sites and wondering if this was real or made up.

Friday 12th Sep 2008
Brad Pitt has insisted that his Hollywood career will always come second to Angelina Jolie and their expanding brood.

Talking to an Australian publication, the actor says he is more than happy to make the sacrifices that come with having six young children.

He told Woman’s Day, “I’m enjoying this period of my life because I see that I can do a lot more than I ever imagined before. It’s all about re-jigging your world and not limiting yourself.

“But my family comes before everything else. No film will ever take precedence or fill me with the kind of joy that I have as a father and partner.”

If Woman’s Day is indeed legit, I hope someone can get the rest of the interview for us to read. :)

I also want to extend my thoughts and prayers to those JP fans who live in Texas. Hope everyone is safe and sound.

Faye88 @ 09/13/2008 at 8:21 am

They are an Ausie’s tabloid. Women’s day is the same tabs which was telling Angie saw a light when she was giving birth to twins and how she was into Budha’s effect.

there is another made up interview by Look magazine from UK! Yeah, the one which had another made up interview with Angie and they were quoting her telling Shiloh is outcast and how she wasn’t going to have another bio kid(after all they were right since she has two more  ) they have new made up interview and are using Brad’s last year quote when he told Angie is his best soundborading and she pissed his off sometimes when she talks about his charactors, and they are using it about their relationship and are refering to it as a sign for arguing. Well it is Look magazine after all.

I have question fan. Brad recently told that Chad was him all over and he was him in previous day and it is still mystery to him this part of him himself, and how he is disurbed by it all,and even his other half(Angie) is disturbed by that too. Is he talking about Chad charactor or part of his own charactor? I can’t understand it. I mean is he telling that sometimes Angie is distubed with him or she was disturbed with Chad’s charactor? Thank you in advance.

Why can’t we just believe what we hear with our own ears and not what we read. TTIF. “My other half”. “Miss my family”, “my kids make me laugh”…… I could go on and on. We are letting the haters plant lies and ugliness into Brad and Angie threads. That is not what they are about and their fans know it. So God Bless the Jolie Pitts and their fans.

Washington didn’t like it that much but they tell this about Pitt.

Oh, the high-octane cast works hard. Clooney throws up his eyebrows and whips out his roguish grin. Malkovich flies into pink-skinned rages. McDormand is desperately perky. Pitt, the best of the lot, gets dimwitted charm into his endless recitation of the name “Osborne Cox.”

Someone correc me if I’m wrong but I think he means that at one point or sometimes he acts goofy or dumb like Chad and Angie finds it disurbing.

hello fans! very early in the morning,i’m not here for weekend,i’m leaving for my mother_in_law’s house, will see BAR today with my friends and some of my families.

just Check google, there are afew reviews that don’t like the movie and are some how disappointed,I don’t know what they were expecting.CNN didn’t like it either,i guess it is normal, not all people should like it.will see it today for sure.enjoy your weekend.

Before leaving,I think we fans should count on some younger people in this year’s Oscar as well. Anne Hatheway is getting great reviews for her role in “Rachel Getting Married”,they are saying it is Oscar worthy. So i think we will get to know which people and women will run for Oscar this year and are in competition with Angie.

Oh in not related note, Anne’s publicist is S.Huvane.

Oh no, that means Stephen Huvane will pimp Anee Hathaway to the max!

#445 wobbler30 @ 09/13/2008 at 9:08 am ,Well, you are wrong.(not a shocker)Brad meant Angelina was disturbed by Chad’s charactor. He was joking btw,but we know you wouldn’t miss a opportunity to take a cheap shoot at Brad.

Thank you to everyone who posted the boxoffice information for Burn after reading.
