Paul Newman Dead at 83

Legendary actor Paul Newman passed away last night at the age of 83 at his home in Westport, Connecticut.

A former chain smoker, Newman had been diagnosed with lung cancer in June of this year and ultimately died of it.

He appeared in over 60 movies including: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Nominated nine times for an Oscar, he won best actor for the 1986 film, The Color of Money.

Also known as the founder of Newman’s Own food company, his daugher Nell will most likely take over. Profits and royalties from the company are donated to charity and have exceeded $220 million as of last year.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul’s family and friends.

Very sad news………….thoughts are with his family and friends
He was not just a great actor, but did a lot of good as well through his charities.

Great Man, Great Actor who leaves an enormous legacy behind, will be surely missed

Peace be with you and yours, Paul. You will always be one of the greatest in my list of actors (up there with Cahrlton Heston). The good die young…..

But Jared , what’s with this post? You sound so rude.

I am so saddend by this news. GREAT actor! Great loss.

Good man, Great actor, great humanitarian, great full life, great legacy.

Rest in peace.

Amazing actor - very sad news.

RIP.

(p.s. Jared, suggest you change the title/the post - it’s all sounding a bit unemotional ‘…Dead at 83.’)

Wow, this is heartbreaking. I think I’ve seen every movie he’s made. I will miss him and my blessings go out to his family and friends. I believe Tom Cruise is a friend of his too.
I’m just so happy to know he’s remained married to Joanne Woodward for more than 50 years. They are an incredible and most likely the best of the last of EXTRAORDINARY Hollywood marriages.

=( will miss him terribly

Oh it’s so sad.He was a really great great actor.

cAPTAIN JACK @ 09/27/2008 at 10:57 am

It is such a shame that worthless idiots like those chicks from The Hills, Zanessa, The Jonas Brothers, Hayden Planetarium and others will have stories that will probably get far more attention on here than this story. Hollywood does not know what they lost (well the old school class does). We lost someone who truly enjoyed and celebrated their life and was a great avtor, husband and humnitarian. In his 83 years, Paul Newman accomplished an unprecedented amount of tasks, from winning an Oscar to racecar driving championships to raising millions upon millions upon millions of dollars for charity. He was a true belssing to this world. May God Offer Him A Special Place In Heaven and may well all celebrate his amazing life.

Incredible actor. Great philanthropist.
He will be missed. :-(

[*] in our hearts for ever

That’s so sad…I remember watching the movie “Cat on a hot Tin Roof” in college (in France), after having read the book as part of a course…I actually liked the movie whereas I usually hate movies older than 1985…may he rest in peace!!!

Absolute legend! R.I.P.

RIP Paul, truly among the greatest in Hollywood

The world has lost a true gentleman. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, especially his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward. RIP, Butch Cassidy. You will be sorely missed. :( :(

Such a fine man! Condolences to his wife, Joanne and his children.

true legend, wonderful actor
we will miss him.
RIP

Thank goodness for Wikipedia, eh Just Jared?

What sad news. This is a “STAR” who has passed away. It is important to note that those who are now following should look at this man’s example of what a STAR is. I have seen I believe every film. He had a great relationship with his wife Joanne and their children. I agree with one of the previous post, that we get so caught up on these fly by night want to Be’s and forget what a true actor is and should be.

My favorite roles are The Verdict, Absence of Malice, Butch Cassidy, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cool Hand Luke… Just to name a few. These are roles that will be remembered. How many actor’s roles can you say the same of.

He will be greatly missed.

One of the best actor and legend of our time
He will be missed.

(SOBBING)……………Paul Newman a great actor a legend one of the last great personalities……………..a great human being part of a good hollywood marriage……………peace be upon him

Rest in Peace, dear Paul Newman! An intelligent, talented, creative, business philanthropic (giving back), and beautiful (inside/outsie) man. He and incredible wife, Joanne Woodward, gave us some great film and, yet, we didn’t receive enough of them (together or separate)!

He was originally from Ohio and passionately opposed the Vietnam War, favored civil rights, and ended up on evil Richard Nixon’s hit list.

In honor of all the good Paul Newman gave in this world, celebrate his life by casting your vote on November 4 for OBAMA-BIDEN!!!

Growing up with a mum, who is a great fan of Mr. Newman, it’s a great loss.

My deepest condolences to Mr. Newman’s family and Rest In Peace Mr. Newman.

Truly a legend.

“I wish I could recall with clarity the impulse that compelled me to help bring this camp into being. I’d be pleased if I could announce a motive of lofty purpose. I’ve been accused of compassion, of altruism, of devotion to Christian, Hebrew, and Moslem ethic, but however desperate I am to claim ownership of a high ideal, I cannot. I wanted, I think, to acknowledge Luck; the chance of it, the benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, made especially savage for children because they may not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it.”
- Paul Newman.

I had hoped the rumors of his condition weren’t true. Forget about the film career for a minute, this man did so much for charity, with little publicity, which speaks volumes. Listen up 15 yr old JJ readers, THIS is what a true legend and star is, not the poseurs who usually grace the pages of this blog.

Nooooooo! Worst year ever!

quite right celebrate his life vote on nov.4 ………………….obama-biden

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Paul Newman, who was one of the finest actors to ever grace the silver screen. He was a rare mixture of enormous talent and modesty, who also found the time to establish important charities in the name of his late son Scott and for children suffering from cancer. He was quite unique.

May he R.I.P.

So many memories of this great man on screen and in his comments off screen. I think the Newman Foundation said it best:

“Paul Newman’s craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.”

Rest in Peace Paul! And to his family: The world mourns with you. We have lost one of the truly great actors and philanthropists of our time.

ebmo #47 - Thank you for that amazing quote!

Paul Newman had a soft spot in his magnificent heart for the perceived underdog who might not have otherwise experienced opportunity in life….he was at the forefront of the new philanthropy!

One of my favorite quotes is about his enduring marriage with his magnificent wife, Joanne Woodward: “I have steak at home, why do out for hamburger”?

Great Actor.
RIP!

ok, first off, i think paul newman was a great human being, and it’s sad that he passed, but still, he was 83, lived a full life, so i can’t help but be happy for him

secondly: if being a chain smoker results in you dying at the tender age of 83, then i’m all for it! (and i’m not a smoker, maybe i should start?)

RIP. Great Actor! a Legend! He will be missed!

So sad. they don’t make people like this anymore. Great actor, great philanthropist (giving without any fanfare about it). What a great concept to start a food factory and donate all the roceedings. I always by Newman’s own salad dressing knowing the money goes to the poor.
A sad day in America…

Jared, it will be nice of you to show a little more respect for a true actor and legend, instead of the worthless trolls you usually post with so much dedication everyday.

i was bummed when i heard this. great actor and he will be missed dearly. rest in peace paul newman.

This is a great loss for the cinema.
Paul Newman was a wonderful actor, I remember many of his beatiful movies. He will remain a legend

He’s one of those actors that you admired. His marriage to another actress has lasted for 50 years!! And I admire them for making their marriage work!!
I don’t think any Hollywood couple can outlast these two!!

I think his salad dressing will now be even more sold!!

My prayers are with him and his family!

Rest in Peace.
Great actor. I watched his movies because I love his act & he’s so gorgeous.

what a loss!

he was REALLY hot as a younger man! not to be insensitive - because he was a true talent!

RIP Newman @ 09/27/2008 at 12:56 pm

One of the greatest ever..

If you love movies..YOU MUST WATCH

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

The Long Hot Summer

Cool Hand Luke

in fact just watch everything he is in.. AMAZING!!

Not only do I praise his acting, but I praise his humanitarian work. He wasn’t as ‘public’ with his work as someone like Angelina Jolie, because he felt that he didn’t need to collide it with his acting.

RIP.

passing Through @ 09/27/2008 at 12:59 pm

Rest in peace, Paul. He was one of our last great stars from the golden era of films. It’s always sad to see the great one go.

Im not shocked, because throughout the year i heard he was very ill, still when i heard the news im taken aback because he was one of my favorite actors.
He could be easy going and cool,to stern and fatherly. He had a great live in the moment lust for life that i will always greatly admire. Some of my favorite Newman films:
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
The Long, Hot Summer
The Hustler
Cool Hand Luke
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Towering Inferno
The Sting
Slap Shot
Fort Apache the Bronx
Nobody’s Fool
The Hudsucker Proxy
The Color of Money
Empire Falls
Road to Perdition

Oh I feel so sad. loved him as an actor and all around person. My heart goes out to his family, especially his wife, how sad to lose your 50 year partner, if we all feel sad, imagine how she must feel.

A true legend has passed. RIP

RIP Paul Newman, a great Actor and Humanitarian.

JARED,

I know you would rather post cellulite pics of Kim Kardashian OR yet another Katie Holmes pic walking in NYC but, why not honor Paul Newman one of the sexiest actors ever in the United States. Instead you put up a very unflattering pic of him from his last years. Let some of the younger posters see what Paul was like in his prime…

I forgot to add in my post, I cant pick a favorite he was great in them, espically in Cool hand Luke, can anyone top his record of eating 50 hardboiled eggs? I sure cant. And he was HOT in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof……but, does anyone remember the movie “Shane”….he was a half-breed Indian and it was a great movie also.

BTW, I agree with several posts JJ, this gentleman was not only a great actor, but a humanitaerian(sp) and a compassionate soul who also had a loving wife………the TRUE HOLLYWOOD MAN!!!!!!!! and the bad thing about it is……we are loosing them if not already have lost them….Paul, Charlton (Heston), Burt (Lancaster), Robert (Mitchum), and the “Duke” himself, (John Wayne). To name a few.

If any actor now had any clout these gentlemen did…..maybe it would still be Hollywood and not “Hollyweird”….. Thank the good Lord himself he has a special place for these guys……because that is exactly what they are and always will be.

Prayers to your family Paul…..and know you can rest peacefully because there are still those who will always love and remember ya..then..now and forever….

Paul neman was the starof all time God Bless

RIP. Another faded legendary.

I am deeply saddened…Joanne and Paul are one of a kind…a real team and I just feel that we lost an icon - I agree with the person who said “worst year ever.” Jared were you even aware of him? Your post is not even close to the dedication it needs to be….A class act, humanitarian and wonderful husband and father.

“Former chain smoker” That is real nice Jared. I guess when Marlon Brando died you thought…”Hmmm he ate way too much” We all have done not so healthy things in our lives Jared. Show respect…

hottest couple ever @ 09/27/2008 at 1:28 pm

I will never forget a scene from “From the Terrace” in which he starred with Joanne Woodward where the camera focuses closely on his gorgeous blue eyes. OMG!

Paul Newman will be missed.

He and his wife gave away hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars recently to charity. We always knew he was a very very good man. Its so sad to see someone with such a good heart go. I love his acting and its a sad day for many people I think.

Errr… your plea to put up a sexy beast pic of Paul Newman versus using a recent pic of him seems very superficial and it’s a disservice to the memory of the man. Paul Newman was not one of those actors who made a break to Europe for a life of seclusion just because he was afraid his public couldn’t handle his aging. The evidence of that was the fact that he continued to work into his 80s.

Paul Newman isn’t an example because he was a stunningly good-looking man in his youth, middle age and old age; he was a brilliant actor and a multifaceted human being. Paul Newman deserved better than what he got in these few months. He deserved the chance to deal with his illness privately, without the National Enquirer disclosing his condition and synchronizing their watches to the exact time he could or would succumb to it.

This would have been a nice photo to use in this post:

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm513447936/nm0000056

I was hoping the rumors about his health were just that…rumors. I’m so saddened to hear it was true and that he has lost his battle against cancer.

He was a wonderful actor and a wonderful human being. The best one can hope for is to have lived life as fully as possible. And from what I can see Paul Newman did exactly that.

My condolences to his family.

alexanderina @ 09/27/2008 at 1:59 pm

So very sad to hear this. RIP Paul Newman. He was a screen legend no doubt after it and will be greatly miss. My thoughts and prayers goies out to his family and friends.

Rachelsun @ 09/27/2008 at 2:01 pm

Paul Newman was a great actor and humanitarian. Just leave your condolences and stop using this as a place to slam other celebrities. Before thinking he was so different you need to do some research. Mr. Newman lived his most famous times w/o blogs/internet exploiting his every move and making up lies about him.
He was fortunate, lived a full-life and he did advertise his charities to encourage others to give. He faced tragedy but he also understood the life he had and wanted to share his good fortune w/ others. He was also politically active and engaged in the civil rights movement w/ his face out front and not hiding.
Pray for his wife of 50 years and family during this time and stop wishing ill on others.

I’am so sad about this.He was a beautiful and humble man and a
great actor. My favorite movie of his was “The Long Hot Summer” with
his beautiful Joanne. He did so much good,to help so many people.
He was such a class act in Hollywood. There is not too many around
like this man. My thoughts and prayers go out to his beloved Joanne
and their family.

Rest in peace, Mr. Newman. You will be missed. My condolences to his family.

r.i.p.

he was such a great actor
he’ll definetly be missed!

alexanderina @ 09/27/2008 at 2:09 pm

Not only was he a screen legend, but a great humantarian and an incredible man. He was so giving, caring and loving and just a great human being.

Thanks Jared for this thread

This is the kind of man to look up to…no whoring out his family, no pimping the kids for photo-ops, no declarations about his charity work. Really, in comparison, most of what Hollywood attracts these days is cheap, plastic, not-worthy-of-fame famewhores and poseurs. He was the real deal.

I loved how he did his charity work quietly without big fanfare over the years.
Just a private and classy family man. R.I.P Paul.

I only buy his pasta sauce.

Some people should live forever…

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family & friends; he will be sorely missed.

I do have a question to some posters, though…. How should Jared change to “title” to make it less… cold? It’s an obituary. Most likely the standard one placed by the A. P. (Associated Press news-service). Have any of you even read obits? They’re pretty much the same: announcing a passing of celebrities &/or ordinary people.

I believe the ONLY time the “title” gets emotional, much less the rest of it, is for family & friends known to you. In this case, I don’t believe that Jared personally knew Mr. Newman, & so is entitled to post the standard obit.

I’ve said it… ‘Bye!

i nearly cried when i heard this earlier.

he is such a stark contrast to the young “actors” of today, it’s sort of depressing. They just don’t make em like they used to.

Rest in Peace.

Jared,

How about posting a photo tribute to Paul Newman instead of this later in life photo. I am tired of seeing Lesbian Lilo… how bout some pics that ascend the decadence of Hollywood?

Oh I know Jared, he was not gay, having an affair, scientologist, etc etc

For the JustJared posters I just saw where TMZ had the decency to post a photo tribute. So, if you are young and have no clue about Paul Newman he was a Hollywood great that even though I am in my 30s I really respected.

~~NEW PAUL NEWMAN THREAD~~

groundcontrol @ 09/27/2008 at 4:08 pm

I love Paul Newman. Love love love him. I had the original black and white poster of his gorgeous self with the blue eyes - on my bedroom wall. Back in the days of drive-ins I can’t count the times I watched (well, went to see) Hombre and Cool Hand Luke.

I am also old enough to remember that for the most part Newman, the actor, was dismissed as a pretty face for a long time. In all fairness, some of his early acting was cringe worthy. But he grew as an actor through the years and he won over both critics and the public and eventually the Academy but not til he was in his 50s. His huge stardom was not based on his acting ability but on his total hotness - just like Redford. It’s nice though that he became a fine actor.

I am also old enough to remember that, of course, he was very public about his charitable works and issues. Both the center he created to fight drugs after the suicide or accidental overdose of his son from his first marriage and his food products and later his Hole in the Wall Camps. Newman was smart and savy about his charitable works and knew how to get the publicity and awareness necessary for them to be effective and successful. You think it was an accident his face is prominently displayed on the label of his products. Of course not.

Some of his movies have my favorite romantic turns by a male like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (we’ll forget that the reality of the character was that he was hiding he was gay and that’s waht drove his alcoholism and disinterest in his wife), From the Terrace, The Long Hot Summer, The Young Philadelphians, Hud, and Exodus. What a man!

I would love a Paul Newman marathon about now. There’s a crazy one with Joanne Woodward called A New Kind of Love which is great for the hate becomes hot love story line between the two.

This good man will be missed.

It’s a shame that I’ve never gotten the chance to sit down and watch his movies, probably because I wasn’t born during the time he was making them. All the comments I’ve been reading about how wonderful and iconic films he’s been in is the least I can do to see his talents as an actor. I only knew him through his race car hobby and his humanitarian efforts. RIP.
