It was more than being on committee groups, it was an arranged fund raising event(s) for Obama held at their at their Hyde Park home. As a candidate for a serious government office, Obama and his advisors would have known who they were and the potential implications of their past to an elected official and impact on his constituency. Just because individuals have higher education and professional degrees doesn’t vindicate a violent reckless past that included being responsible for innocent death and they have no remorse for the death they caused.
It is also not unusual for the University community to accept and be tolerant of extreme idealism…that has been their general premise as part of “learning and education”…but this should not be construed as a green-light to glorify them.
He may be respected for his work but as a person Ayres is not as respected and distinguished as you imply. He is tolerated by many and has been rejected from participating in many educational forums because of his current day advocacy of violence as part of his political discourse.

I am tired of them and so are the people in Louisana, from another report on another board it’s very interesting.

I do not “believe” that Angie and Brad are “letting” their sons “play” with these objects, it sounds as if the boys’- Maddox inparticular has a very normal boyish interest in these items, it goes back to the old saying if you do not allow your children to explore their interests in all things, with sound “advice” to back it up, then the interest may become “dark” and all-encompassing( if you don’t allow a healthy interest, say in guns, a young boy will ultimately pick up a stick and pretend it’s a gun, nonethless)… sounds like the boys’ are interested in these things and they are allowing that interest to take shape with sound advice (weapons are not for hurting, etc.) to teach them that difference. It also sounds like they are maybe starting a collection as well… doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, especially for those of us who have and are around boys’… my opinion…

When we were kids, we learned how to handle guns, bows and arrows and knives. Mostly at a shooting range although my brother did archery competition for a while.

I know he used knives in scouting.

No one “put their eye out” and no one grew up to be a “killer”, or even a hunter. We were always supervised and learned that weapons, if used capriciously will kill.

States’ Film Production Incentives Cause Jitters

LOS ANGELES — Already on the hook for billions to bail out Wall Street, taxpayers are also finding themselves stuck with a growing tab for state programs intended to increase local film production.

One of the most shocking bills has come due in Louisiana, where residents are financing a hefty share of Brad Pitt’s next movie — $27,117,737, to be exact, which the producers will receive by cashing or selling off valuable tax credits.

As the number of movies made under these plans multiplied in recent years, the state money turned into a welcome rescue plan for Hollywood at a time when private investors were fleeing the movies. But the glamour business has not always been kind to those who pick up the costs, and states are moving to rein in their largess that has allowed producers to be reimbursed for all manner of expenditures, whether the salaries of stars, the rental of studio space or meals for the crew.

Louisiana, one of the most assertive players in the subsidy game, wound up covering that outsize piece of the nearly $167 million budget of Mr. Pitt’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” — the state’s biggest movie payout to date — when producers for Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers qualified the coming movie, a special-effects drama, under an incentive that has since been tightened. Separately, Louisiana’s former film commissioner is set to be sentenced in January to as much as 15 years in federal prison for taking bribes to inflate film budgets (though not that of “Button”) and, hence, pay higher subsidies.

Michigan, its own budget sagging, is in the middle of a hot political fight over a generous 40 percent rebate on expenditures to filmmakers that was carried out, with little opposition, only last April. Producers of films for studios like Warner Brothers and the Weinstein Company rushed to cash in, just as homegrown businesses were squeezed by a new business tax and surcharge. Rebellious legislators from both parties are now looking to put a cap on the state’s annual film spending, which some have estimated could quickly hit $200 million a year.

In Rhode Island, meanwhile, the rules have toughened considerably. That happened after The Providence Journal reported in March that producers of a straight-to-DVD picture called “Hard Luck,” which starred Wesley Snipes and Cybill Shepherd, had picked up $2.65 million in state tax credits on a budget of $11 million, even though it had reported paying only $1.9 million of the total to Rhode Islanders.

“With this much money involved, there’s going to be a temptation to hype budgets,” said Peter Dekom, a veteran entertainment business lawyer who is an adviser to New Mexico’s incentive program.

The vogue for state film subsidies appears to have started in Colorado early this decade, with a briefly financed Defense Against Canada law that was devised to win production back from Vancouver and Toronto. Louisiana and New Mexico soon came on board.

By this year, about 40 states were offering significant subsidies, turning the United States into what the Incentives Office, a consulting firm in Santa Monica, Calif., has called the New Bulgaria. It is a reference to what was once the film industry’s favorite low-cost production site.

Virtually all of the programs use a state tax system to reimburse producers for money spent on movies or TV shows shot in the state. Some, like Michigan’s, simply refund a percentage of expenditures to the producer. Others, like Louisiana’s, issue a tax credit that can reduce the taxes a production pays or be sold to someone else. Either way, the state gives up revenue that otherwise would be collected to put money in the producer’s pockets.

Advocates, of course, argue that these programs create jobs.

One of the country’s most successful programs is in New Mexico, which has backed movies like the Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men” and next year’s “Terminator Salvation,” the latest sequel in the action series, with a reported budget of $200 million.

New Mexico officials boast of having used a 25 percent production cost rebate to build a local film industry that has attracted more than $600 million in direct spending since 2003, and an estimated $1.8 billion in total financial impact, as of last June. And in fiscal year 2008, the productions in the state generated 142,577 days of employment, up from 25,293 in 2004.

Elsewhere, however, critics have sharply challenged the notion that state subsidies for the film business can ever buy more than momentary glitter.

“There’s no evidence yet that this is a particularly efficient or effective way to create jobs,” said Noah Berger, executive director of the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center.

Freedman had been mulling over how to show anything new about one of the most photographed women in the world and Weber pointed out that, in his opinion, the best pictures of Elizabeth Taylor were taken by her third husband, Mike Todd.

“I was surprised that Brad accepted the challenge,” says Freedman of Pitt’s enthusiastic response. “Last time we collaborated, I was struck by his sensitivity to the subtleties of photography. I knew that he possessed a highly tuned critical eye and would be very demanding of himself. Still, I wasn’t prepared for the beauty and intimacy of the images he made of Angelina and the children.”

Looks like daggergate got to people ..read what she says, she has explained the concept of good vs evil and the whole samurai explanation. The kids are well aware of their ethnicity and have been to conditions of abject poverty, she is making them aware of guns, daggers, knives and how it is to be used .. for the good only.

Some of these topics are so controversial and thats why we get people up in arms.. (no pun), its easier to tell your kids to not engage in guns/knives etc than to teach them the whole pros vs cons thing.. She is definitely taking the tougher route and teaching them. Did most of u watch Kungfu Panda? that had violence but was the no 1 movie in america and is doing well worldwide. Do you think people are questioning if Jack Black’s kids are into violence?

and to whoever asked if she can talk about guns film wanted and still work for the UN… YES absolutely.. You dont have to play Eliza dolittle to get a chance to work at the UN.

At least now I can see the photos properly. Those screencaps I saw sucked. It’s too bad they didn’t include the photo of Z in Angie’s heels, though. That one was megacute. Ok I said I wouldn’t look at the pictures until I got the magazine but I looked, lol. They’re beautiful. I love the one with Shiloh and Pax, with Maddox cracking up, and the one of her carrying Knox (I think it’s Knox, Viv had more and darker hair). And the one where she’s making the fish lips reminds me of a 1930s silent movie star, I have no idea why. She has a beautiful face and Brad captured it very well. Great pictures.

I think haters try to find all negatives. I think the woman is honest and she has nothing to hide. Items collected are not for violence according to her. They are part of some collectibles. I think she said the boy is collecting aeroplanes too as toys.

Brad use to collect swords. He talked about it in old interview around the GP days. He also gave our hand craved knifes as gifts to the crew of AOJJ. It seems both parents respect and enjoy knifes. So it seems they want to teach their kids to respect and enjoy them also.

Now would I collect them? No but then again I would not collect or have my child collect Beanie babies either.

I am beyond in love with this W. I think it will be my altime fav of them all. I love the pursed lip pic, the floppy hat and baby pic, and the one with she and Mad laughing the most “so far.” I’m from a family were guns, knives, archery are the norm. I shot my first gun at 10 that I remember and hated it, but the more I learned, and the more I respected the power, the more I liked them. I’m a military kid (family), and although I’m not fond of how guns have become so politicized (I despise the NRA), I have no intentions of not having them and knives. As long as children are educated about every aspect of them, and how serious it is to have them, I’m not having a problem. I love how Angelina & Brad invest the time in teaching their kids about those things now. To many kids end up learning things from their friends, and thats when _hit happens that could have been prevented.

Most chidren who are in scouting or go have knives. Swiss Army knives or Pocket knives. They are taught by responsible adults how to use them.

Those can be just as deadly as a dagger. How about fire crackers? Parents give those to their kids on the 4th of July. Those can be deadly too if unsupervised. (Even sparklers can be a fire hazard) Trick or Treating? OMG!!!!
What about riding your bike without knee pads and a helmut? Pretty dangerous (although when I was a kid they did not have them).

My point is this. ANYTHING can be dangerous if the child is left unsupervised which these children are not.

This just has everyone’s knickers in a twist because they were waiting to have something to complain about!

It is truly sad when people do not read the entire article, or only read what they want to see. First of all Brad was approached to do the shoot for W. They came to him. And Angie agreed. Collecting something and using it as a weapon are two different things.

These people have been out of sight since May so how are they over exposing themselves. D*mn we see Jennifer Garner, Katie Holmes, J Lopez, Halle Berry and other darn near everyday. Are they not overexposed? Oh and x. Whenever she is seen she is overexposed.

Who has ever revealed more about herself than Oprah? People hide things when they are ashamed of themselves and what has happened to them. The things Angie reveals are only made a big deal because the press and media doesn’t have anything else to say about her.

How many times has she said that after meeting Brad she wanted to have children? Yet the medai acts as though this is the first time she has said it. Brad and Angie don’t create the news. The live their lives and do their jobs. The media creates the news. They need stories to sell, real or made up.

Notice there wasn’t much news about Brad and makeitright last week. bdj found some. But wasn’t as bigh as the breastfeeding news. That doesn’t excite as much as a picture of Angie feeding a twin.

Angelina is just giving an interview to promote her lastest film and doing it has she always done. The idea of the photshoot was from the editor of the magazine and it was a brilllant idea.

As for them “exposing” their children. Please… you see less of their kids than most of other kids in HW. At least this way they controle how their kids appear.

If the idiot had bothered to read any of the comments on the site she’d have seen where many people were correcting the person who wrote the piece about issues regarding the financing, Brad having been ready to do the picture, even Aronofsky “bailed” by signing on for the Robocop project. And the idea that Brad bailed over money is stupid because how many movies has he done since he met Angie where he’s basically working for free? BAR, TAOJJ, TOL, Babel. He even walked away from a guaranteed $20MIL payday for State of Play. Meanwhile, Marky Mark put out that dud with M. Night Shyamalan and I’m sure that didn’t exactly engender a warm feeling at Paramount, who was supposed to finance the flick. Besides, as someone else pointed out at Slashfilms - do were REALLY need another boxing movie? I think not.

I’ve no idea, unless she means she has seen some of us posting on the Aniston threads. I freely admit to posting on the Aniston threads. That should tell you how important she is that they would take the same things that she has been saying for years and reprint it like its new. Its funny as hell. That’s why I just look at the pictures now.

black, did you read the back story of how this shoot came about?. It was actually suggested by the magazine, and Brad jumped at the chance. It’s a romantic, revealing fun shoot. Take it as such. And as bdj mentioned earlier, Vanessa Paradis is extolling her and Johnny Depps “love”. Why can’t Angie do the same.

As for the contrived “uproar” over the “daggers and knives” mention, please. The reason so many kids use violence as an outlet, is because no one educate them about the pros and cons.

Angie and Brad’s detractors are REALLY incensed that they would dare take control of their own image in the media and shoot their own pictures etc. The reality is that they are always going to be written about and photographed, so why the heck SHOULDN’T they do it on their own terms?! Too bad for you if it pisses you off so much.

The reality is that today it sucks to be a hater - Angie and Brad are not going to ’shut up and go away’, as much as the haters may want them to, and that’s what is driving them nuts. Too true. Developers want to get their hands on the property in the Lower 9th ward for a golf course or some other devleopment. The community and grass root organizations have fought long and hard to rebuild in the area. Most chidren who are in scouting or go have knives. Swiss Army knives or Pocket knives. They are taught by responsible adults how to use them.

Those can be just as deadly as a dagger. How about fire crackers? Parents give those to their kids on the 4th of July. Those can be deadly too if unsupervised. (Even sparklers can be a fire hazard) Trick or Treating? OMG!!!!
What about riding your bike without knee pads and a helmut? Pretty dangerous (although when I was a kid they did not have them).

My point is this. ANYTHING can be dangerous if the child is left unsupervised which these children are not.

It’s hard to say, I don’t really buy into the conspiracy theory stuff. But anything is possible in the media. Most especially HW, where everyone is out to get everyone else. I know people who are hunters that start their young children in shooting rifles at a young age. I never forget when one of my students said she shot her first deer at age 8. Now that is worst then collecting knives. My grandson would prob love to have Angie as a mom. He is into guns and weapons. He changes any and everything into a weapon. Again, what is wrong with a man taking photos of his family? It’s in a controlled environment, so it is better than the paps taking the pictures and using them anyway, (which they do).

The magazine was looking for a different slant for the movie promotion. I am almost sure that after just having her babies, Angie was not in the best frame of mind to do a lavish photo shoot. Hence the photographs. This way, they killed two birds with one stone, the magazine article with photos for the promotion, and Brad gets to show his beautiful family through his eyes. A win, win for all.

Why dont you read the article first, before spouting the usual rhetoric. It’s becoming tedious reading the same old criticsims about the JPs. If it were anyone else, they would de lauded from kingdom come. But of couse with this family, they have to try to tear them down. Why does it have to be “pro daggers” and for the record, my daughter does have a dagger. It is a replica of an Egyptian artifact. She got it when she was eight. Low and behold she is 18 and she still has the dagger, as well as two samuri sword and we are all puncture free.

I am in favor of children being SUPERVISED. In my work with childrens’ services I can tell you that balloons, Polly Pockets and Hot Wheels cars can be just as deadly when parts break off and are swallowed. Q-tips can puncture ear drums if used by little ones.

Barbie - that shapely smiling purveyor of death is comes with a whole array of choking hazards in the form of accessories (not to mention she causes anorexia and the desire for breast implants).

HA! my brother used to all the time climb a very tall tree on our backyard (I mean tall!) and carry around his belt knives and yelling he was tarzan. Not to mention he lost a lot of them, he never got hurt.
I believe it depends in the education.I am not from the US, but I see that there is a strong gun culture over there, and not everyone is shooting each other when young. There are accidents if kids get to the guns unsupervised as in everyhome anything can happen, playing with fire, in the kitchen, playing on the street, etc.
Also, I beliee that B&A are a bit more into Asian culture than people from my country, so their hobbies and interests are in different directions (not to mention prices!)

Why does it have to be “pro daggers” and for the record, my daughter does have a dagger. It is a replica of an Egyptian artifact. She got it when she was eight. Low and behold she is 18 and she still has the dagger, as well as two samuri sword and we are all puncture free.

One of my co-workers has a daughter that collects swords. She’s 16 now and has been collecting since she was 8. They’re ceremonial swords, sharpened, not dulled, and come with scabbards for storage. She’s got siblings…not once has any of them tried to hurt anyone with the swords. When my co-worker first mentioned it some people were taken aback - but only because it was her DAUGHTER collecting and not her son!

Most peple have some common sense. Just not the Jolie-Pitt haters…or US Lies Weakly. I laughed at their little header on the side of the page. Leave it to Min to make a mountain out of ant dung.

I can just imagine how pissed Brad must have been when X was spreading their martial issues and what not to the witches circle. I don’t even know how anyone would be able to deal with that kind of thing. One thing I have to say, even though Angelina talks, she never says anything new. And frankly she hardly talks about Brad. Most of the time we hear only about how the kids interact with one another. And like I said up thread most of what she has said about Brad has been very superficial. So technically speaking, everything she has said has become redundant. Which is good, because again it takes away the ammo from those would like to tear them down.
