‘Kids in Need of Defense’ (KIND) Launched by Microsoft, Angelina Jolie, Major Law Firms and Corporate Legal Departments

WASHINGTON, Oct 17, 2008 — New Children’s Advocacy Organization to Provide Legal Assistance for Unaccompanied Immigrant Children in U.S.
Microsoft Corp., internationally acclaimed actress Angelina Jolie, and more than 25 law firms and corporate law departments announced today the formation of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a new national children’s advocacy initiative with the mission of providing pro bono legal counsel to unaccompanied immigrant children in the United States so that they are treated fairly and compassionately in our immigration system.
Each year approximately 8,000 children who are separated from their families go through U.S. immigration proceedings. Today half of these children do so without legal representation. KIND aims to fill this gap by ensuring that all unaccompanied children get access to legal counsel in the immigration process.
“KIND is creating an innovative pro bono model, bringing together lawyers from companies and law firms in partnership with non-governmental organizations to meet the legal needs of an entire group of vulnerable children,” said Brad Smith, Microsoft’s General Counsel, who introduced the organization to a gathering in Washington, D.C. of more than 150 representatives from the legal community. “Through our support of KIND, we hope to inspire the participation of many more representatives of our legal community to offer these children the fundamental protection they need. Every lawyer has a professional responsibility to provide pro bono legal services to those unable to pay.”
“These children often have nothing; no money, no support and no family, yet they come to America seeking its promises of a better life,” states Angelina Jolie. “But many end up becoming lost, traumatized, and ultimately forgotten. KIND provides each of them with the ability to have their legal rights protected and their voices heard.”
U.S. law provides no appointed counsel for unaccompanied children in immigration court proceedings. Without benefit of pro bono counsel, these children face difficulties in understanding the legal proceedings and legal options that may be available to them. This also creates added challenges for government attorneys and immigration judges who must evaluate these cases. Immigrant children who receive pro bono legal assistance, however, are more likely to experience favorable consideration from the court for asylum in the U.S.
“I applaud all those involved in the KIND initiative to help unaccompanied and undocumented children receive the legal representation they need to understand and exercise their basic legal rights while navigating our nation’s complex and intimidating immigration system,” Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) said. Rep. Roybal-Allard is the author of the Immigration Oversight and Fairness Act (HR 7255), which would establish legally enforceable immigration detention standards to ensure that all detainees, including children, are treated fairly and humanely while in custody.
As part of its professional commitment to pro bono work, Microsoft responded to this problem in Washington State five years ago by helping to establish Volunteer Advocates for Immigrant Justice (VAIJ). The effort brings together lawyers in companies and law firms with other civic groups in the Seattle area to provide pro bono legal assistance. In 2006 VAIJ was recognized by the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service as integral in connecting with qualified pro bono attorneys to represent unaccompanied children in immigration court.
KIND’s immediate goal is to work closely with private law firms, corporate legal departments and their attorneys to recruit, train, and mentor attorneys to represent children in locations where KIND is located, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Seattle, and Houston. By 2010, the organization’s goal is to represent more than 2,100 children annually: every unaccompanied child in KIND’s locations who would not otherwise have an attorney.
By partnering with Ms. Jolie, KIND will build on her extensive history of accomplishments as a Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and on her long-standing commitment to providing free legal aid to unaccompanied children as young as toddlers who lack any legal representation.

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said on Friday he will present a case within weeks for the indictment of some rebel commanders accused of attacking peacekeepers in Sudan’s Darfur region.

The court is currently considering chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo’s case for the indictment of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and has already indicted a Sudanese minister and an allied militia leader for war crimes.

“In a couple of weeks I will present my third case against some rebel commanders who were attacking African Union peacekeepers,” Moreno-Ocampo told a Council on Foreign Relations symposium, sponsored by Hollywood actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Moreno-Ocampo has been investigating a 2007 attack on an AU base in Haskanita, Darfur which killed 12 peacekeepers and was blamed on rebels. A U.N. report said vehicles used in the attack bore the initials “JEM,” which could have stood for the Justice and Equality Movement, a powerful rebel group.

Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, told the symposium that “peace is placed before justice, often instead of justice.

The funny thing is, she was supposedly on a “charity mission” no one could say what she was doing so after a great deal of research I determined that smartwater’s parent company made a pittly little donation to an organization that promotes healthy eating and exercise in schools.

X does not donate, in fact she owns part of Smartwater. (Smartwater does not even donate water!)

She makes money from every bottle they sell and about 1 quarter of a cent goes to the organization.

Add to that the fact that bottled water has been found to be largely unregulated and in some cases contains more sugar than pop and you can see what a wonderful humanitarian she is!

I’m with you ……. it is a disgrace that for all the good work Angie does on film and in her charity/humanitarian work, she gets only tabloid press when she mentions her relationship; this site included. It is pressing on my last nerve. I’m beginning to think that if she doesn’t want this to over-ride her achievements in these areas of real contribution, she might have to give us ‘nothing’ to satisfy our need to track her family life….or quit the HW thing and go under the radar. I don’t know what it is but Schuler’s always have the mags I want way before B&N. I went there last night looking for it - no luck. Went today… found out they had it all along, but they had it on an endcap instead of its usual place. There were only four copies left.

I have to say, I am significantly more impressed with it now that I have a hard copy. Don’t get me wrong - the scans are appreciated - but there is something about having the actual mag. First of all, the scans weren’t necessarily in order; IMO, the way the pics were arranged within the spread makes a big difference. Also, there were gorgeous ads and other art spreads - Brad’s pics truly stuck out, in the best sense. The cover, and the pics with Angelina and the kids could be St. Johns ads, but the ones that the haters griped about were very interesting. If anything, some of them make you look very carefully (not the butt or see-through shirt). The one with Angelina covering herself… it almost looks like she was lying down, not sitting up and posing. Actually, that pic, along with the other ‘grainy’ pics, looked like charcoal drawings.

Again, the scans are fine, but getting the issue is well worth the $4.95.

I’m beginning to think Jared’s site is not as loyal to JP fans as we’ve been to him.
Jared’s innuendos on Angelina articles are annoying me. He has thrown some choice bones to the haters.

If this continues, I’m not coming here anymore.

There are other sites that are more fun to visit, and not be assailed by the B.S. here.

Production on Quentin Tarantino’s controversy-baiting WWII epic Inglourious ******** began in Germany last week, and two important pieces of information have already emerged.

One, Brad Pitt, seen here in character for the Nazi-hunting film, is irritatingly incapable of taking a bad photo. And two, Tarantino apparently doesn’t care for spell check. (Maybe he’s looking for a way to distinguish his film from 1978’s Inglorious ********…or not, considering that the misspelling apes his widely leaked script.)

Add to these insights the recent revelation that Dancing With the Stars’ wacky, elimination-proof octogenarian Cloris Leachman has joined the cast, and you have the makings of one of the more intriguing big-screen offerings in years.

The majority of the film is expected to be filmed on location around Berlin and, in addition to Pitt and Leachman, stars Diane Kruger, B.J. Novak, Eli Roth and Mike Myers.

******** is due out in 2009.

I’ve been a fan even before Brad came into her life. With or without Brad, Angie will still be the best for me.

Three movies — The Weinstein Company’s “The Road” and Par’s “The Soloist” and “Defiance” — now might get, at best, a qualifying run or might not be eligible in 2008 at all.

Most notably, four best actor or supporting actor candidates — Viggo Mortensen (”The Road”), Daniel Craig (”Defiance”), Robert “Downey Jr. (”The Soloist”) and Jamie Foxx (”The Soloist”) — saw their odds diminish or disappear entirely with the rescheduling.

“The whole race turned upside-down in a matter of days,” said one Oscar consultant. “You have four potential Best Actor candidates who are not just in limbo — they may be gone.”

Wary of falling prey to the buzz saw that struck many September and October movies last year — and running behind on postproduction schedules — a host of movies had been held back until later in the season.

But while December still looks crowded (the second half of the month alone is rife with hopefuls like “Revolutionary Road,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Wrestler), it looks a lot less jammed than it once did.

That could open up the race to other candidates who might have otherwise had a tougher time getting traction — actors in smaller movies that opened earlier in the year, like Richard Jenkins (”The Visitor”), or stars of summer tentpoles like “The Dark Knight” and “Iron Man.”

And it opens up the field for other fall hopefuls, including Brad Pitt (”Button”) Rourke (”The Wrestler”), Sean Penn (”Milk”), Josh Brolin (”W”) and Frank Langella (”Frost/Nixon”), who now may get not just a wider berth but a bigger push.

I have not seen how Angelina has tried to change her image. She has been working with UNHCR since 2001 and in every interview up to 2005 she talked about S& M and various other topics that if she was trying to change her image she would have left it unsaid . She obviously doesnt give a sh-it what you think. Brad and his giant jowls on the other hand DOES care. He changed his image into a activist and talks very little about Angelina in his US Interviews just for you. ; )

Now, with that off my chest–I’m loving all the new interviews. I love how Angie is maturing and blooming. She sounds so content and happy and settled into her role in her family. When she talks about the family they are building as their greatest accomplishment, rather than the multi-million dollars their movies make it warms my heart. I know I couldn’t handle that many kids but I admire them so much for what they are doing. It’s obvious they can make gorgeous children but they still want to open their hearts to orphaned children.

People act like this is some kind of disease. When did a big family become something to be ashamed of? I imagine it will be a whole lot of fun growing up in the Jolie-Pitt household, warts and all. It is so beautiful to see so many different people joined together to love and support each other.

I really don’t understand why so much hatred is directed toward this beautiful family. I also wonder how that much all the negative energy poured out on them affects their lives. Love has a vibration. So does hate. If they end up breaking up I will blame all that hated spewed at them for ruining things.

But I hope it doesn’t happen. Their hopes and dreams of a big, loving, multi-race family is a worthy and beautiful goal that deserves to flourish and survive. I hope to see this couple toddling down the red carpet in their eighties still loving and respecting each other as they accept lifetime achievement awards for lives well spent. I hope no matter what the tabloids spew out–ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO HATE BRANGELINA FOR SINS THEY’VE NEVER COMMITTED–that Brad and Angie can laugh it off and live their lives happily ever after. That their kids grow up to be productive happy adults.

I don’t know why I care so much for this family, but they touch my heart and always have. Happily ever after didn’t work out for me. But that didn’t make me so jealous and bitter that I can’t hope for it to work out for someone else. And as far as I’m concerned Brad and Angie deserve to have it work out for them. May their family flourish and their love just keep growing stronger. What is wrong with so many people in this world that they can’t wish these two lovely people and their children all the best? And may God surround and protect them from all the negative and hateful energy directed at them.

Buzz up!Angelina Jolie reveals she and Brad Pitt fell in love on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith - which Pitt filmed while still married to Jennifer Aniston.

“Not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love,” Jolie, 33, says - referring to wanting her kids to see the flick - in the New York Times.

Jolie says she worries, “[Maddox will] look up my name and see some kind of sexy pictures, or read a story about himself that isn’t true.

For now, the kids look at mom and dad as nerds, Jolie says.

“What’s going to be funny is when they think Mom and Dad are a little bit cool, because right now, we’re not cool Mom and Dad,” she says. “Even video games, you know, it’s: ‘Mom, you can’t play this. You don’t know how.’

“Oh, they all think I can’t do anything, that I’m just there to snuggle with. But the other day, Madd said, ‘Can you do a cartwheel?’ and I said, ‘Yeah I can.’ And he was like, ‘Wow, Mom,’” she says.

“And I thought ‘Oh, yeah. I can do some things. You wait. You’ll find out. I’m capable,” Jolie says.

The actress says she picks her movie roles based on her kids’ schedules.

She asks herself, “Who’s in school at that time? How can I be sure I don’t do too many long hours? Can the three youngest be on the set every day?

“As long as I can still be with my family, it’s fun. But I only want to do that, and I’m not looking for anything else,” she says.

For inspiration, Jolie looks to her own mother, who died in January 2007.

“My mom, she was a very, very soft woman. It was hard for her to yell, or even curse,” Jolie says. “But when it came to fighting for her kids, she found a strength she didn’t always know she had.

“And there’s a part of [Changeling character] Christine that I connected to her,” Jolie adds. “I kept pictures of my mom in little purses” that she totes in the movie.

Changeling opens in limited release Oct. 24.

She is incredible and people like her will only see good things happening to them. God rewards good people and good karma will always follow her. Those who criticise her are only jealous and filled with envy of all the publicity she gets even without making an effort, and for the fact that she is so good at everything she touches. Everybody wants a piece of her even the haters are facinated by her but will not own up to this. People who matter listen to Angie regarding causes about children. This is a cause very close to her heart and also has a connection to her being the UNHCR ambassador. A cause she’s very articulate and passionate about. The fact that Bill Gates and major law institutions got her to front KIND speaks of the reputation Angelina has regarding issues that deal with children and refugees (both are being represented in this instance). In this case, as a spokesperson, she’s adept since she’s been exposed to this since 2004. No matter how haters undermine her humanitarian portfolio, no one can deny that when it comes to issues about children and refugees, to the people who matter, the refugees, the ones who have a direct impact on the laws not just in the US but worldwide, hers is a voice that will be heard , hers is a stance that will be reckoned with.

I really do not think that the headlines in US magazine is what Angie was talking about in her interview. I hope when she does another interview, there will be more clarification. I think she’s talking about their characters in the movie since she explicitly explained in Vogue what the real story was.

I read maniston visited an elementary school. A small token but it is a good sign because it shows she is at last learning a thing or two from the master (Angie). It will only help to show her as human and less self absorbed. Haters can also learn from JP’s fans on how to be nice and loving because it will only help to enrich your lives.

Look… I really wish that people would have reliable memories, especially haters, because these explosive tantrums cannot be good for the cardiovascular system.
