Changeling (R) *** | Fact is, haunting story’s enough to make you shudder

There are some breathtakingly dark moments in Changeling, as well as some hauntingly eerie and unsettling ones (including a rendition of Silent Night that simultaneously breaks your heart and makes your skin crawl). If the movie eventually has to resort to caricature and shorthand to resolve the multitude of storylines it sets forth, such tricks take nothing away from Jolie’s moving portrayal of a mother’s panicked grief and refusal to relinquish hope, even when all signs indicate the worst.

The tension builds to a tidal wave that’s held together by solid performances. Jolie, looking increasingly haggard and drawn as Christine’s world crumbles, maintains her character’s determination and dignity despite being trapped in horrible situations.

Donovan is suave and seemingly unflappable as Captain Jones, even as he denies the obvious truth. A compelling character who embodies heartlessness behind a cunning smile, he becomes the film’s character you love to hate.

Malkovich is strong as the crusading pastor who is unafraid of making waves. Michael Kelly is the film’s hero, just what the story needs, as a homicide detective who puts his own career on the line by not only uncovering the truth but getting it out, no matter who it may upset.

Harner, with a boyish face and an easy smile, creates a memorable screen monster, a man who had done horrible things and then plays cruel games with Christine about the whereabouts of her son. Alderson is nothing short of remarkable as the terrified runaway whose tormented conscience pushes him to unearth a frightening past.

Changeling is a film that is haunted by the past. It will no doubt haunt audiences, too, even as it finds something good to come out of very bad events.

Director Clint Eastwood continues his remarkable run of creativity with his latest film ‘Changeling’

Clint Eastwood is in the midst of one of cinema’s most notable late growth spurts. Until he reached his 70s, he’d been a solid, above-average filmmaker with a signature style and a capacity for greatness.

But since turning 70, Eastwood has been on a tear, with one masterpiece (”Million Dollar Baby”), one near-masterpiece (”Mystic River”) and a project of epic dimensions, the mirror-image World War II films “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.”

“Changeling” maintains Eastwood’s creative streak. It might not be as exalted as “Million Dollar Baby,” but there are things about it that set it apart and make it one of the most enjoyable of his recent films.

It’s a woman’s story, which is a departure for Eastwood. (Even “Million Dollar Baby” was about a woman as seen through the eyes of a man.)

And because the story has no built-in aura of significance — because it’s simply a sad account of something that happened to somebody long ago — Eastwood’s abilities stand out in sharper relief.

The history doesn’t make the movie important. Rather, Eastwood makes the history important.

He does it by simply taking a really good story and directing it well, though in fact there’s nothing simple about the artistic intelligence on display here.

That intelligence permeates every aspect of the picture, and yet the hand is light, and if you don’t look for it, you might not notice it.

is a thing of subtle beauty. The colors are ever so slightly faded, and yet always there will be something in the frame that leaps out — a yellow cab, or Angelina Jolie’s lipstick.

The overall effect is to make us aware of color and aware that we’re seeing an era — the late 1920s and early 1930s — that we know almost entirely in black and white.

We’re seeing not only history but also a dream of history, and that double effect, which adds texture to the experience, is accomplished gently and lands right on the border of consciousness.

Eastwood makes this world so visually appealing and fascinating in its details that we just want to linger there, look at Jolie in a cloche and watch her take her son to school on a Los Angeles streetcar.

When the story intrudes, it feels like an intrusion on our world, too: A single mother, Christine Collins (Jolie) comes home from work to find that her son is missing. Gone. No trace. Vanished.

“Changeling” is based on a true story, but knowing that it’s true couldn’t have made it any easier for Eastwood and the actors to pull off the pivotal scene.

After several months, Christine is told by the Los Angeles police that her son has been located.

Accompanied by a police captain (Jeffrey Donovan), she goes to meet the boy at the train, but the boy turns out not to be her son.

However, news reporters are nearby, and the captain, not wanting to expose the department to embarrassment, insists that the boy is her son.

And so, for that moment, and for the benefit of the press, Christine persuades herself that the changeling is the real thing.

This is an unlikely turn. Why would a mother choose to believe that a strange boy is her child? The answer is in Jolie and Eastwood’s complete understanding of the scene’s emotional dynamics.

Christine is disoriented. She is disappointed as few have ever been disappointed. She is still in that halfway zone between receiving bad news and not wanting to believe it.

And so, in that moment of vulnerability, she accepts this kid, who looks nothing like her child, as her son.

That’s really where the movie begins. What follows is a harrowing saga, in which Christine fights to have her real son found, while coming up against the self-protective, corrupt police department.

The details are best left for you to discover, but the story, in an incidental way, touches on the respective differences in status between men and women in this earlier time.

Jolie is a creature of the screen, as strange looking as an alien from the planet Movie Star, but emotionally ready, present and understated. She never grandstands; she just delivers.

John Malkovich is very much in the period as a crusading minister/radio personality, a fellow who spent most of his life in the 19th century and has the theatricality to prove it.

Also not to be overlooked is Jason Butler Harner, who plays one of the best movie psychos I’ve ever seen — a frightened, sniveling wreck whose mind is disintegrating.

“Changeling” is a disturbing film about grim subject matter, but the overall experience is more exhilarating than saddening. There’s just something satisfying about seeing a movie so well made.GO!

Movie review: Mother knows best in ‘Changeling’
And so does Clint Eastwood, crafting a bleak but emotional thriller based on a true-crime story.

Angelina Jolie is the strong emotional center of the film. Her performance as the distraught mother is so driven, so sensitive to the many different facets of a complex personality, that we feel an intuitive understanding of her. She is convincingly brave and compellingly frightened. The movie is mostly told from Christine’s point of view, yet it doesn’t let her off the hook for the events that led to Walter’s disappearance. Instead it argues that even a loving mother can make decisions that spiral into tragedy. Jolie makes Christine’s unspoken feelings of guilt a key to her later tenacity. “Changeling” is bleak about the fragility of life without being unwatchably pessimistic.

It’s impossible to not be impressed by Eastwood’s mature craftsmanship. He gives us the look of old Los Angeles, its streetcars and flapper fashions and Model T’s, but the film wears its period lightly. Observe the way Eastwood blocks scenes, patiently letting the camera linger on the actors, never cutting until it’s appropriate. Look at the sensitivity in the scenes between Jolie and the women working in her office. Who would have predicted that Dirty Harry would have the delicacy of feeling to show that supportive sorority enfolding a sister in need?

Eastwood keeps the volcanic John Malkovich at a simmer in the role of a crusading radio evangelist who takes up Christine’s cause, his shrill anger venting only when it’s tactically useful to scare an adversary. When the film travels into frightening territory, Eastwood is unflinching. There are horrific moments of bloodshed, and equally ghastly official retribution. A monster gets the punishment he deserves, but Eastwood doesn’t savor his final moments of suffering, instead making him an unexpected figure of pity. When this uncanny film is over, you feel that you have looked both good and evil in the face.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. –

Angelina Jolie has had a whirlwind travel schedule these past few weeks. The actress surprised Clint Eastwood with an award at the Hollywood Film Festival Awards Gala earlier this week, and prior to the ceremony, Angelina was in Afghanistan.

Angelina visited the war-torn nation as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency where she met with refugees who had recently returned to their homes, People reported.

The actress also met with Afghan Hands, an organization which helps women and child in the region.

“After seeing real suffering,” the mother of six told the mag, “you never complain anymore.”

And when she returned home, what was the first thing the actress did?

“Hug the kids,” she said.

During a recent interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Today” show, the actress said she and Brad Pitt are considering adopting another child.

“Soon?” Matt asked Angelina during their interview as she nodded, confirming his question.

Angelina attempted to skirt further questions about the possible adoption, but noted, “You can’t even start the process until any new children are six months old, to understand how the new family has settled.”

In addition to her work in Afghanistan, Angelina and Brad recently lent their support to their daughter Zahara’s homeland.

As previously reported by Access, they made a $2 million donation through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation to the Global Heath Committee to create a center for AIDS and tuberculous-affected children in Ethiopia in September.

The money established a program to help treat drug-resistant tuberculosis in children and adults.

“Our goal is to transfer the success we have had in Cambodia to Ethiopia where people are needlessly dying of tuberculosis, a curable disease, and HIV/AIDS, a treatable disease,” Angelina said in a statement released to Access.

The couple also donated $1 million in June to help kids affected by the war in Iraq.

The first homes in Brad Pitt’s Make It Right rebuilding project are complete, and some three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, 68-year-old grandmother Gloria Guy was on hand to give the actor a big hug, the Associated Press reports.

Pitt, partner Angelina Jolie and their family of six children privately toured the hard-hit Lower 9th Ward district recently. The celebrity couple bought a home in New Orleans about a year after Katrina struck and became involved in launching the project to help rebuild the city’s hardest-hit neighborhood.

“I thank God for Brad Pitt,” Guy said when reporters viewed the first six homes Pitt and family visited. “I told him how much I appreciate all that he’s done for me and my family.”

Guy is moving into one of the first of some 150 Make It Right homes planned for a district where levees crumbled after Katrina, unleashing floodwaters that knocked previous homes off their foundations. Her new home sits atop 8-foot concrete pilings amid empty, grassy lots where some steps lead into thin air - where houses once stood.

Review: ‘Changeling’ Is Magnificent

In the interest of full disclosure I must reveal that I’ve been a fan of J. Michael Straczynski for around two decades now. The man knows story and characters better than most, so I went into this film trusting that the script would be solid. What I was not prepared for was everything else. A week script can doom a film before even a single scene is shot, no matter the amount of award-winning actors and directors you throw at it. Likewise, a strong script can save a film from ham-fisted acting and poor direction. Every once in a while you get a film that has a great script and top-notch director so that even the weakest parts are unable to drag the whole production down to a level that is at worst, really good. Then, even more rarely, you get a film like Changeling. I suppose I shouldn’t really call it a perfect film, but I’ll be damned if I can find any flaws.

Having said all that, Angelina Jolie absolutely owns this film. The vulnerability that she shows with abandon and the quiet, yet steel-strong resolve that remains constant in her portrayal of Christine Collins is nothing short of amazing. I’m a fan of many of her film roles, but I would say that this is easily the highlight of her career to date. Mention should also be made of the four young boys that each have prominent scenes in the film. While W. C. Fields may have said “never work with children or animals”, the first half of that statement is deftly refuted by the exceptional performances that Eastwood gets from these young actors.

And that leads us to Clint Eastwood’s direction. I haven’t enjoyed all the films he’s chosen to direct, but he certainly knows how to make a great film. He’s very smart in the framing of a scene and it’s uncanny how he can such honest and true performances from the actors he casts. He’s won two Oscars and three Golden Globes as a director and his work on Changeling is deserving of another of each of those. Eastwood is a genius at mixing action with color and film score (also composed by him) into just the right blend to convey the truth of a scene. I think it’s a true credit that he makes his actors comfortable enough to metaphorically bare all in their performances and he deftly captures all the subtle nuances that result.

If this film doesn’t get at least a half a dozen Oscar nominations then there truly is no justice in this world. Changeling is one of the strongest films this year, if not the best. It’s easily in my top five and I think it will make your list as well. I recommend you see Changeling at the first available opportunity.

Hey guli. I hope you are still here. I hope the trolls and haters at Jared’s are choking on their hate. Brad is with Angie. But of course the true fans knew this. Okay, I am going to be perfectly honest with you about Changeling. Changeling is probably one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time It is not just one of the best Angelina movies I’ve seen. It is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time.

I went with a social worker friend of mind and she couldn’t stop talking about it on the way home. Angie was brilliant. She was not the kick ass take no names Angie. This wasn’t even the AMH Angie. This was a softer, gentler Angie who found herself, and her voice a midst the most horrifying circumstances. Angie is a every woman who is a mother.

It is amazing watching her challenge the system and herself. At times it is a difficult movie to watch, but you can’t stop watching. You want to see her and what she does. It is a beautiful and subtle performance. If she isn’t nominated for an Acedemy Award this year, then they are full of sh*t and everyone should stop watching them. I do not say this because I am a fan. I say it because it is true.

Clint did a great job. Every actor was pitch perfect. Whoever did the casting did an excellent job. I could never see Reese Witherspoon, or whoever else wanted this role playing this part. Angie was the perfect actress for this role. Peace

Yes. According to them THAT was the “Oktoberfest” celebration poor stupid DJ keeps going on about. They listed ONE DATE - OCT 20 - and that’s it. And one of the rags - US, I think - also commented that it was a guy’s night out with his co-stars and he left Angie at home with the kids. OuttaaTouch also quoted someone on the set who said Brad was great to work with and got along just swell with his co-stars. Universal’s “Changeling,” which goes wide, should have less of a problem since it plays to an older demographic.

The other pic with a shot at No. 2 is Universal’s Angelina Jolie starrer “Changeling,” which expands from 15 to 1,850 theaters. Clint Eastwood-helmed drama grossed a boffo $33,000 per play last weekend and appealed to a somewhat younger and more male aud than the studio expected given that it’s a period piece about a family tragedy. Two years ago, Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” opened with a similar print count in late October and grossed just over $10 million.

“Burn After Reading,” which has cumed about $50 million overseas, opens in Holland, and “Death Race” debuts in Australia, Holland and Mexico.

There’s a keen contrast of the physical and the psychological in every aspect of “Changeling.” Like many of Clint Eastwood’s recent directorial efforts (”Mystic River,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “Letters from Iwo Jima”), the film is a pit-of-your-stomach melodrama, evoking intense emotional and physiological responses. Our feelings are engaged by Jolie’s righteous, but tempered, performance — and as Christine faces the ordeal of uncovering the truth, we sense the dull ache of her dilemma in our chests and suddenly become conscious of our thumping hearts.

The movie gets its power from the performance of Jolie, who gives a heart-rending tour de force as a woman who keeps saying, “I want my son back,” mostly in teary-eyed close-ups. Jolie’s full-mouthed sexuality, underscored by the red lipstick of the era, is unused and so just floats unmoored through the film. It comes to represent her sense of loss. Malkovich is also a strange choice for the hero, but it’s satisfying to see his eccentric precision being used in the service of a good cause.

Eastwood has long been interested in the rebel stance — one man against the world — but his later films have taken an intriguing detour. Like Million-Dollar Baby, Changeling is about one woman against the world, and working with screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski, he finds the same brand of macho power that informed his own career. “Rule No. 1,” Christine tells Walter in an early scene. “Never start a fight. Always finish it.”

One of the joys of being a parent is embarrassing your kids when they get old enough to care! Muhahahahahahah!!

I told my girls when I am in my 60s I will act like they did when they were 3, I will talk loudly in public, complain I want to got home, spit my food out on the plate in a restaurant if I don’t like it and throw myself down if they don’t buy me whatever I want.

I figure at that age I will be young enough not to break a hip but old enough where they cannot prove I have demntia!!!

I love it. It will be Angelina’s 3rd (bless her heart) and Brad’s second.
