Carrie Underwood: No Respect for Celebs who Endorse Candidates
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has lost all respect for Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and other celebrities who have backed candidates for office.
While talking about the presidential race with TV Guide, Carrie revealed, “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.”
“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she explains. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to. Music is where you go to get away from all the BS. Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

P.S. Today’s election day, don’t forget to vote!!!!!

What’s her problem? She’s only saying that because most likely she’s voting for McCain and doesn’t want her fans to know because most young people are supporters of Obama.
Oh, and does her opinion apply for people who put signs in front of their homes?!
Thank God!! Politics is the one thing you are not supposed to talk about anyways. You’re probably one of the smarter celebrities. Celebrities are the some of the dumbest people on the face of the earth, and I certainly wouldn’t listen to them about politics. Half of them don’t even know what they are voting for. They vote for what’s “cool” not what is best for America. They can have an opinion, but they can’t force their opinion on me. Their job is to entertain, not be politicians and change the world. None of them even live in the real world. It’s nice of you to keep things to yourself. Besides, if you’re not voting for Obama, it’s best not to say; otherwise, you might get attacked. Gotta love Obama supporters (cough, cough).
I voted for Carrie on American Idol and she proves to be an American lady that little girls can look up to. I agree with her. Celebs do not have the right to tell me how to vote. You go girl!! I will continue to buy her CD’s but will not ever go to another Matt Damon movie as he crossed the line when he put down Sarah Palin with such anger and rudeness.
Celebs don’t realize that they aren’t respected outside of the movie theater or TV. Many (could probably say most) are not college educated and if they are it certainly isn’t in a field other than the arts. Plus, they aren’t real people. They really need to stick to acting. By endorsing a candidate, it hurts that politician. Americans who work for a living, raise their kids, cut cupons to save on good toothpaste, cook dinners and clean thier own toilets (and don’t mind doing all of those things) laugh at celebrities who think we are even interested in who they are voting for. Carrie Underwood is awesome for stating that. I was raised by parents who insilled in us that a vote is private. To ask someone who they are voting for is inappropriate and to broadcast who you are voting for is even more so.
everyone please refer to #313’s comment because i cant really say it any better than he/she has.
Although I do believe Carrie WAS being a bit dramatic saying that she’s “lost repect” for all celebrities who endorsed a candidate. HOWEVER, I think its good how she voiced her opinion about how all these hollywood hotshots think that their star power in the entertainment business suddenly gives them this esteemed knowledge on politics and this influencing power on others to vote for someone JUST because they say to. Citizens shouldnt be watching all these CORNY celebrity-centered psas on who should be the next president. Its ridiculous! Hayden panettiere’s psas for example…her psas are PAINFULLY corny and i feel embarassed for her for thinking that using this sort of satire will persuade american citizens to vote for obama. I am in fact democrat and support Obama/Biden 100% of the way, but I feel as if these stupid psas do more harm than good.
Wow…maybe she feels a little threaten that majority’s for Obama.
i think its ridiculous how its suddenly become a hype to be a Obama follower/Democrat when seem to have no knowledge of anything that is going around in the political world, let alone the policies that the democratic party are fighting for. It seems as if many people use this image as being all for Obama just gain an image of being more knowledgable and politically advanced. stupid. KNOW YOUR FACTS BEFORE YOU STATE YOU ARE A PROUD DEMOCRAT!
OBAMA/BIDEN ‘08
Sounds like McCain’s Lover to me!
I agree 100% with Carrie Underwood. It is about time that a celebrity spoke up. Yes, everyone has a right to express their opinions…but advertising and using your celebrity status to back a candidate is a way of persuading people to not think for themselves. It is also a way for the celebrity to gain some free publicity fo themselves in the process…all a game, I have much more respect for a celebrity who doesn’t need the attention of endorsing or speaking out about a specific candidate. A simple “get out and vote” message is enough. Oh, and yes celebrities do have a “right” to speak out…but it is their point of delivery that is the problem and the “cool” factor they try to inflict on others when they endorse a specific candidate. I like it much better when they entertain and remain neutral about their political decisions.
FINALLY someone in hollywood who addresses the annoying craze. i never really liked underwood but i give her this much for speaking up, especially on such a controversial topic as this
YOU GO CARRIE!! You are the only person NOT telling everyone to vote for. REMEMBER PEOPLE- IT IS A PRIVATE BALLOT. No one should be telling anyone who to vote for, especially on public television. Oprah was out of line. They were all out of line. And I think Carrie Underwood is the only one with brains to not tell who she is voting for. She knows it is a private ballot, and isn’t going to publicly announce who she is voting for. Carrie doesn’t want a president that was voted for by who told them to vote. So once again- Rock on, Carrie.
I am totally buying all of her records now! That is what I wish every celebrity would have said. I can’t stand celebrities who try to sway voters by their statements. Everyday people can’t change people’s minds the way a celebrity can and I think it is very unfair when they tell the press who they are voting for. I really am boycotting every celebrity that has voiced their opinion about the vote as much as possible… even to the point of turning the channel if I see them on TV.
Kudos Carrie! Too many people are influenced by celebrities’ points of view or decisions. A large % of Americans just wait until their favorite celeb endorses someone or something to support or buy. Its a very disturbing thing to see someone get on national TV and go on the road campaigning for a candidate. Too many people are folllowers instead of leaders. They can’t make up their own mind, so they let a celeb do it for them. I used to watch Oprah. I won’t anymore. I’m NOT Republican, but it made me sick. Makes me wonder what she thinks she’ll get out of it if Obama gets it. One last thing…..where was he born? Seems nobody knows, as he can’t produce a legal birth certificate. Campaign money from overseas? Converted from the Muslim faith to Christianity. Won’t pledge allegiance to the American flag. Turns his back when the American anthem is played. Sorry, folks, I want a president who’s for the good old USA, not against us! Wait and see.
i agree with her. and for everyone who is saying republicans are stupid, how rude bc not all republicans feel that way!!! but she has a point. no celebrity should get on tv and publically endorse a candidate. its fine to wear a t shirt or whatever but when ur getting on national television to tell ppl who to vote for, thats going a little too far.
Amen Carrie! I’m glad there is at least one celebrity who does not think the world revolves around them, and that they are somehow an expert and an authority on everything just because they are famous. I don’t care what the celebrities think. All they do when they open up their big mouth is alienate their fans. Case in point, The Dixie Chicks. They were on top of the world until Natalie had to go on a tirade. Whether you agree with her or not, you cannot ignore the fact that they have fallen into relative obscurity since that brilliant move. Yes, celebrities can stand on their soapbox and say whatever they want, but they run the risk of damaging their credibility as entertainers.
We do not look to entertainers for guidance on politics or religion. We look to them to entertain us, and help us esxape from the realities of life. I applaud celebrities who are involved in humanitarian aid, but why is it the top news story on every channel? I lose a lot of respect for them and their motives when everything they do is highly publicized.
Thank you Carrie for understanding that the “little people” can make up their own minds, that we probably have a better grasp on reality, and we don’t care what Oprah thinks about anything.
I agree, everywhere you look there are celebs saying who they are going to vote for…Even i don’t tell anyone who i will be voting for when it comes to elections… It should be your own desicion and there are people who are easily swayed by what other people think and say esp when they hear it from celbs. Alot of people have cleb idols and are fanatics so they would vote for whom ever their idol is voting for… I think it’s fine for clebs to have an opinion, but why do they need to advertise who they are voting for everytime they get the chance? They are using their fame to get people to vote for who they want to win.
HOLD UP
1. celebrities arent arent pushing people to vote for people they are expresing their opinions just as carrie underwood - so FAIL CARRIE UNDERWOOD
2. umm since when is carrie underwood someone who is SOO reliable on politics? - FAIL AGAIN CARRIE UNDERWOOD
3. RESPECT OUT THE WINDOW FOR HER
Wow, people here totally just took this whole thing the wrong way. In no way did Carrie ever say she had no respect for any celebrity in particular. This is something JustJared.com added by themselves to rouse everyone. It’s not that she doesn’t respect them because they tell who they are voting for, it’s because she doesn’t respect the ones that try to get the public to vote for a specific candidate. (I can’t believe I’m saying this) but if celebrities were more like T-Pain, and telling people just to vote, not who to vote for, then we wouldn’t have this little problem now would we? (But, that might be because he has a little problem with voting right now.)
This was just like the whole Jessica Simpson thing. Carrie mentioned one thing and intended it to be completely harmless. But media and people everywhere always completely screw up what she says.
Celebs have freedom of speech like every other person in this country. Whether you are a doctor, plumber, teacher or actor you have the right to say who you want to vote for. You also have the right to choose NOT to discuss this information. No-one should be criticized for either choice.
You may not like their choice but they have the right, to speak out just like you do. That does not get taken away when they become famous.
I have lost all my respect for Carrie. Just sing and STFU. If shes not putting down Jessica and Tony, now shes bashing celebrities who have opinions and voice them out. Whos next, Jesus?
Wow Kimmie, you make me laugh lol. She didn’t put down J&T smart one. She just said Tony calls her sometimes, that was back in MAY, and the media blew that WAAAAAY out of proportion just like they are doing with this. And why bring Jesus into this? Get yourself together and try to make sure what you’re saying doesn’t sound like it’s coming out of your ass.
Some of you people really piss me off. If you don’t know the REAL FACTS, don’t act like you do.
Shame on you JJ for adding those unnecessary names to cause controversy so you can have more comments. How about posting the actual article/interview and not making **** up?
At last we have somebody in show-business with class and an intellect. Well done Carrie.
Unfortunately some people commenting here can only insult Carrie Underwood. It is only too apparent that they do not believe in democracy and are bitter and twisted and full of hate. It is a sad indictment of the American people that so many comments here are reminiscent of the bullying facists in Germany when Hitler came to power. None of you would have the support of Senator Obama and you do him no service by your hateful utterances.
Carrie Underwood is a lady that believes that all American voters need to make a considered opinion on who to vote for and not be swayed by the views of celebrities. To any intelligent person that is a view that makes perfect sense.
Unfortunately there does appear to be an intellectual desert within America and those voting for Obama include a vast number who are voting based on hysteria and emotion rather than logical reasoning. (Intellect - the faculty of reasoning and understanding objectively. Consequently those who are not objective but biased cannot make an intellectual decision.)
The fact that this election is likely to be decided in favour of a political party which had all the main stream media and far superior spending power behind it indicates that it is not a truly democratic election and is flawed. The fact that America’s voting system is not actually democratic does not help either.
As for the Hollywood cheerleaders for Obama, they are merely fantasists and utopians who are paid far more than they are worth and mainly use their money for selfish and egotistic purposes. They are not good role models considering their appalling lack of morals.
So I am with Carrie, get rid of the BS and the egotistic bullying celebrities of dubious character. Let’s face it Senator Obama would do better without any endorsement from them.
I agree. When Celebs have extreme politics it’s hard to see them as the character they are portraying.
And of course everyone has a right to their opinion no matter what their line of work. But for those of you responding with nasty insults, like ‘dumb’ ‘idiot’ or ‘*****’….really? Grow up. You have nothing educated to say? It’s immature. Don’t insult someone with nasty names just because you don’t agree with their beliefs. To each his own man.
Someone should tell her to shut up.
Celebrities have their own right to endorse whoever they wanna endorse.
Other people have their own opinions, why not celebrities? …
