Carrie Underwood: No Respect for Celebs who Endorse Candidates
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has lost all respect for Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and other celebrities who have backed candidates for office.
While talking about the presidential race with TV Guide, Carrie revealed, “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.”
“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she explains. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to. Music is where you go to get away from all the BS. Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

P.S. Today’s election day, don’t forget to vote!!!!!

her music is BS.
AMEN !
WTF is she talking about. I DID NOT vote for my candidate because of celebrities choices. Well, with this comment shes lost my respect for assuming that I am that dumb to not think for myself and just following celebrities leads. Celebrities have a right to pubically support whoever the ef they want. I have no problem what so ever with it. Seriously, this comment made me look at her in a whole different light.
so she not only lost my respect, but probably has lost all other celebriteis repect as well others who feel the same as I . Foolish remark.
She is a self righteous prig and if she doesn’t learn to shut her bloomin’ cake hole, she will lose a lot more fans that just me.
Celebrities didn’t say vote for him or him, they just said who they SUPPORT.
You have the freedom of speech therefore you have the freedom to support whomever you want publicly. It is the peoples’ choice whether or not to agree or disagree with her. Therefore to publicly display a candidate of your choice is not disrespectful. And also, if your reading this, Carrie Underwood, you just insulted the entire American nation by calling us stupid, why don’t you reread your words? Carrie has lost respect for people who have backed up candidates for office. “It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” is saying that Carrie is saying celebrities are saying that American Public isn’t smart. You are calling us stupid in the thought that a celebrities endorsement is what our choice will be therefore saying that we are not smart enough to make our own decisions and have to rely on the celebrities opinions alone. Think about it.
megmobezilla- She didn’t insult Americans by calling us stupid, she said we’re NOT stupid and we CAN make our own decisions without celebrities using their status to try and influence us. How about YOU reread her words?
I AGREE with Carrie 100 % !!! She’s not saying people are stupid, what’s stupid is there are people out there voting for a canidate just because their favorite CELEBRITY is backing them. Those people are stupid and in my opinion have no business voting! It’s actually scary! But, I am so glad she said this. I for one, will not watch Oprah, martha stewart (freaking idiot!) or any other star that backed OBAMA. What has happened with is election is historic, because this idiot is fixing to put this COUNTRY at risk and it will be historic! Either way, it would have been a historic election, Palin is a woman. All these people need to get off this “black” talk, he is half white. He could of been purple and I would not have voted for him! They are making a big deal out of nothing! This DIDDY P PUFF COMBS idiot, he tops them all. He makes me PUKE! He needs to get over this black crap and move on, slavery was over a long time ago. Oprah is just as stupid. Actually, this election has proven just how AMERICA is, MESSED UP. This was a sad day in history. I feel for McCain because he truly loves this country and his country has failed him. Totally sucks! I think we need to boycott all the artist and celebrities and show them who is really backing them….that would be the stupid americans. How do you think they have so much money? DUH! FANS…stupid enough to buy the movie tickets, clothes, makeup…you get my point! It has to stop. I refuse to support any of these idiots, I will go outside and rake leaves before they see a dime of my money. Take AMERICA back! GO CARRIE…….you are a brave girl for saying this and I back you 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, peeps. Pay close attention. And if Carrie were to run into this, she could seriously use the education of my statement.
A celebrity is rich and famous. A celebrity is looked up to by many and scorned by many others. Fact is, however, a celebrity is still a human being.
Anybody else could go on TV or post a video or something telling people to vote or telling people that they support a certain candidate and why. If America is truly about liberty and justice for all, celebrities should be allowed to have that right - one’s level of fame should not determine whether or not they can speak their minds!
Sure, more celebrities endorsed Obama than McCain, but if you really think any more than 6% of Americans voted for Obama (or even McCain, for that matter) just because their favorite celebrity said so, you’re probably some high strung individual who most likely thinks most Americans couldn’t wash your booty shorts or carry your jock strap.
I am not saying that nobody’s vote has ever been affected at all by celebrity endorsements. Unfortunately, that certain 6% or so of American people who are stupid enough that they will vote solely based on who their celebrity likes, does indeed exist. But the way I see it, it’s like this: not only should the idiotic percent NOT be the basis for saying famous people should just shut up and entertain no matter how passionate they are about their opinion, the idiotic percent SHOULD be the ones that Carrie Underwood or anybody else loses respect for - NOT the celebrities on whose every word they hang who have no clue or control over just who hangs on their every word.
Notice that I’m not here telling celebrities to host a Barack Obama Block Party and showcase it on MTV. (If they wanna celebrate, that’s okay. I just wouldn’t make a spectacle of it.) There’s absolutely a limit, a difference, a thin red line, between endorsing someone and shoving them down our throats. No singular celebrity or coalition of celebrities do themselves well at all when they get to that “shoving down throats” point, cause that’s where it goes beyond exercising a human and American right and into using one’s celeb status to be a party activist, a very risky deal. But if a celebrity wants to simply say who they vote for and why in an interview or two, I don’t see why they should be banished or censored.
Those of you who agree with Carrie 100% that celebrities should just shut up and sing/act/rap, etc., and never try to formulate or speak out an opinion that isn’t related to Hollywood or what they do for a living, and base part of this on the mocking assumption that they’re not as educated as any of the rest of us, you think you’re criticizing them for some sort of a fact but you’re really telling them to stick to the Lindsay Lohan stereotype as if it applies to all famous persons. Strapping a negative stereotype onto a demographic? Peeps, that’s as un-American as anything.
Those of you who agree with her 100% on this and base it on the fringe base of celebrity idolators who will just do everything they think their favorite actors/artists want them to do, you’re agreeing with a statement insinuating that an important percentage of the American people are really that dumb. If you think Carrie was saying celebrity endorsements insinuate that the American people really are incapable of making their own decisions but that she knows they aren’t, then answer me this question: why is she even the slightest bit worried about this? As a matter of fact, why are YOU even worried about this? If a vast enough majority of the American people don’t listen to celebrity endorsements any more than they listen to those of less famous folk, then you shouldn’t be decrying celebrity endorsements as some sort of great evil and disrespectful manipulation of the masses. Instead, the fact of the matter is you shouldn’t even be worried about it at all! This discussion should not even be happening!
The ones who are that impressionable do not belong at a voting booth. Many of them I’m guessing either already know that or don’t really care for the voting booth anyway. I honestly don’t know who Randy Orton, one of my favorite professional wrestlers, voted for. And even if I did, I wouldn’t give two *****. I’d still like Orton as a wrestler and I’d still like Obama as our next leader whether they went fans of each other or not. If Randy Orton voted McCain and I knew, I would probably call him an idiot because I seriously disagree, but I wouldn’t be saying he should shut his mouth and never speak unless spoken to in or out of the ring.
Long story short, this was not some major issue with voters, so IT DOESN’T MATTER. ESPECIALLY not enough to stifle anyone’s right to free speech based on their level of fame. Those of you who think it does need to reexamine the Constitution before you go telling famous sports, music, and acting stars that they shouldn’t be part of what America’s ideals are all about.
Another note: the kind of close-minded “shut up and sing” thinking espoused here by Carrie and those who unquestioningly agree with her 100% is exactly the kind of thinking that got the Dixie Chicks completely blackballed professionally by the very country music scene they used to be a part of with Carrie, as well as unequivocally hated and threatened on their lives by many of those same redneck fans who probably used to listen to them up until the night they spoke out against Bush before speaking out against Bush was cool.
Perhaps that’s something to think about.
Well she can forget about going on Oprah….dumbass cow!
I AGREE WITH HER! SO TRUE!
i hate it how celebrities were like bragging who they were voting for. its like, ‘oh so their voting for (obama) so we all have to’ it was really annoying. even though i like obama.
WOW!! I am in agreement with Carrie Underwood! I don’t usually like this girl but after hearing that I do!!
Celebs do not need to endorse any candidate. It should be up to the candidate to endorse THEMSELVES!!!!
So well said!!
My mom didn’t want Obama to win… she’s scared that if he wins some white spremist might do something terrible to him and then the “WHITE” vice-president becomes president and then the white rules again!
She would love for him to become president but scared for his life…
So I hope they do have good securities everywhere that Obama goes now… My mom is scared for is family too…
It’s sad but only in United States that we have the biggest racist in population.
Congrats to barack Obama!!
I thought America was the country that was so proud of its freedom of speech thing. If she’s allowed to say this, then other celebrities are allowed to express their opinion. I mean, no offence, but people are brainwashed already with the media.
Never had an interest in her anyway…
Wow Carrie, you need to STFU. You have no clue what you are saying. I lost respect for you when you cave into Hollywood and got soooo skinny and forgotten your girl next door roots! You were ashamed weren’t you, that is why you had to get so freakin’ skinny.. Everything you say, is so illegitimate. Keep singing and don’t talk bring up politics.
I agree with Matters, you said it better than I could have put it together! Wayda go!
I totally agree with her too!!!!
You know who’s stupid…the ones that just don’t understand what they read!!!! She is just making a statement that celebrtites should be entertainers, to take the stress out of our lives and BS. In politics, they can be very persuasive and some people will follow them in their thinking. Especially someone as powerful as Oprah, people look up to her, and yes some people can’t make their own decisions!
So for all you haters and bashers, don’t use this commentboard for an excuse to bash Carrie. She’s on top and will be there for a long time!!!!
Jo, I’m gonna try and break down your comment right quick.
‘”She is just making a statement that celebrtites should be entertainers, to take the stress out of our lives and BS.”
-In other words, entertainers should just shut up and sing. Forget that they’re humans with rights and opinions. The new creed of America is that famous people should be seen and heard but not really listened to, only because somehow now the fringe idolaters who hang on these celebrities’ every word is apparently on the verge of becoming 96% of the United States of America somehow. Hmm… didn’t I just say that’s the kind of thinking that some fringe idolaters who hung on BUSH’S every word acted under when they threatened the lives of the Dixie Chicks for speaking out against him? You seriously need to think about that.
“In politics, they can be very persuasive and some people will follow them in their thinking.”
-So what you’re saying is you really do think the majority of the American people simply voted for who their favorite celebrities liked. Unless that’s the insinuation being made by anything here, you really shouldn’t be worried about this. And again, there’s a line each celebrity has to be careful not to cross between endorsing a candidate and shoving him/her down the people’s throats. Sean “Diddy” Combs, for example, crossed that line by carrying Obama material in every media appearance in the last few months. On the other hand, Matt Damon, for example, simply stated in an interview or two why he was voting the way he was. If any celebrities deserve flak for how they endorse a candidate, it’s the ones who are about as fervent and frequent with it as Diddy. But every celebrity that says who they’re voting for is not some great evil manipulator.
“Especially someone as powerful as Oprah, people look up to her, and yes some people can’t make their own decisions!”
-Well, Oprah’s a talk show host, so her opinion and the opinions of her guests are basically how she makes her living. Strangely, that both gives her a ton more leeway and takes a ton away from her. It’s a bit of a tightrope. And as for those people that can’t make their own decisions, don’t you think they’re the ones that you should be losing respect for instead of whatever candidate-endorsing celebrity they decide to be puppets to? And again, unless you think it’s a big enough amount that it decided this election, why are you even worried about this?
Celebrity status endorsement is simply not a big deal. And it’s certainly not a big enough deal to try to insinuate that the minute one becomes a celebrity one should lose the right to make an opinion known. By acting like it is, you’re sending the message that most of America couldn’t carry your jockstrap and that a basic American right should be cut in half because of it so only “ordinary people” can use it.
Please think about what I just said. That’s how I roll.
Oh, and another note: perhaps those reporters who actually look for these celebrity opinions on things should also be getting some criticism. Sadly, many of you are so concerned about pointing the finger at the celebrity you fail to take that into account.
SHE’S HAS A POINT, BUT STILL SHE IS A TOTALLY B-I-A-T-C-H!
I think your all idiots how about that. Stars also voted for mccain you retards.
They just didn’t go around throwing it our faces.
You democrats are to paranoid , 4 years will go by fast………….
I AGREE 100%!!!!!!
I’m pretty sure that was not really what Carrie said, she would never mention names. Celebrities like her, Oprah or Jennifer Aniston know how mean those gossip sites can be.
Well done Carrie! Finally, she’s normal like anyone else. At least she HAS a college education and some knowledge about politics unlike most of these self-absorbed celebrities who don’t really have a clue about politics. Although, Kid Rock was the first one who talked about how celebrities shouldn’t influence people’s voting and politics.
