OlderCarrie Underwood: No Respect for Celebs who Endorse Candidates
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has lost all respect for Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and other celebrities who have backed candidates for office.
While talking about the presidential race with TV Guide, Carrie revealed, “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.”
“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she explains. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to. Music is where you go to get away from all the BS. Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

What the heck? It’s not like celebrities are holding us at gunpoint and forcing us to vote for a certain person. Any other American citizen is allowed to publicly support someone…why not celebrities? it’s not like it’s their job NOT to sway public opinion. It’s Americans’ job to be informed about the real issues and vote based on what they believe in.
And by assuming that the American public makes their decisions based on which celebrities back which candidates in itself assumes that the American public isn’t intelligent enough to do its own research. What Carrie Underwood just said made me lose respect for HER.

OK–if celebrity endorsements don’t have an impact on you, why would it matter if celebrities openly backed a candidate?! According to what you said, it wouldn’t make a difference in your opinion anyway. There’s something that we treasure here in this country called freedom of speech. Who are the celebrities hurting by saying they back Obama, or McCain? Nobody! They are entitled to the same opinion that everybody else is. And it’s not like most of them are publicly slamming the opposing candidate!
Who the hell does Carrie Underwood think she is!?! Just because a celebrity tells who their voting for doesn’t mean they’re telling people how to vote. She needs to just go back to Onapa and help her grandpappy with those bikes he use to fix up.

Carrie is awesome! I love what she said and I am SO SICK of friggin Hollywood telling me who to vote for! They are often less qualified to make an informed choice then all of us here, and the more they shove someone down my throat, the less I like that candidate.
Carrie is telling the truth- and some of you just don’t want to hear it. She is very intelligent, a college grad who graduated with high honors magna c um laude. So stop bashing her– she is likely much more intelligent then all of you bashers combined.

I think people get pissed about celebs in politics because they usually back Democrats. I wonder if the same outcry would be heard if they endorsed Republicans. the stupidity of some of the comments on this blog amaze me. of course the public looks to celebs! the advertising industry counts on it! she is not saying that celebs cant speak their mind! she is just saying they should not encourage one to vote one vote on way or another. plus carrie is a democrat, her album is selling just fine, and she was asked about her politics specifically so she answered.

I don’t think Carrie has the right to say that about anyone especially celebrities. Whether they decide to annouce who their supporting publicily or not, the media will advertise it somehow. I think celebrities are doing it for awareness. I personally love the fact that celebrities support the presidental election. It’s making people be more interested and be involved. I respect Oprah 10x more not having Sarah Palin on her tv show until after the election. She’s committed to Obama.
