Carrie Underwood: No Respect for Celebs who Endorse Candidates

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood has lost all respect for Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, George Clooney and other celebrities who have backed candidates for office.

While talking about the presidential race with TV Guide, Carrie revealed, “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly. I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate.”

“It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she explains. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to. Music is where you go to get away from all the BS. Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

P.S. Today’s election day, don’t forget to vote!!!!!

She deserves for people to say the same thing about her.
Why can’t celebrities express their political opinions? Isn’t America h home of the free? Hopefully all voters will choose their candidate based on the candidiate’s platforms, and not on what some celebrity says.

She is an idiot for saying that.

i have no respect for carrie underwood

she is so god damn annoying

I TOTALLY AGREE with Carrie. I can’t stand how these “Hollywood” people think they know more than us to even think we care who they will vote for. Crazy.

I strongly disagree - people have every right to promote the causes theyre passion about, whether they are celebs or not. It’s up to people to become active, involved, and to engage others for what they believe in, whether that’s for McCain or Obama. Because celebs are often looked up to and their voices are heard they can help shake people out of their apathy….I don’t care who you vote for, just learn the issues and decide, don’t give me some extremist, ignorant answer. Celebs can help in this, in either direction, and be part of the democratic process. I think the problem can sometimes be the MANNER in which it is done; you obviously don’t want celebs to become pushy or sanctimonious, but on the whole they don’t cross that line.

Carrie’s argument is a form of censure, as if to say, “stick to music, you moron, because youre not worthy of anything else” which is complete rubbish. And to say you, “trust the American people because they’re smart enough” SOUNDS like a noble sentiment, but it’s empty demagoguery because sorry, the American people are largely apathetic, ignorant, or don’t know the issues. Our educational system is in shambles and voter disenfranchisement is huge - this is the reality, so many people don’t even register to vote in 2008, what does that tell you? So much as we’d like to applaud her for saying something that sounds great and supportive of the common man, the sad reality is different….we need to all help spread the word & get people involved, because the American people need to get involved in a positive, healthy way…if celebs can help in that process, wonderful.

I feel Carrie is contradicting herself she says she loses respect because “It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” NO she is saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions if she thinks that Oprah’s endorsement is going to be the reason I put a particular candidate in office she’s crazy. Oprah doesn’t pay my bills . I love to watch Tom Cruise act doesn’t mean Im converting to scientology anytime soon. Wake up Carrie u were one of us “dumb americans” as you so put it or how I translate it just a couple of years ago

Is Carrie dumb or what? Oprah is a media outlet just like Times Newspaper, they all pick sides. It’s part of the political process in this country. All media outlets support certain candidates. The same way you are able to state your opinion, so can everyone else in this country.

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!

IT’S CALLED FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn’t say any better. Before, I was so pissed with the posts here about celebrities pissed or ‘forced’ people who to vote for. I did say before that celebrities, their jobs is to entertain the audiences and let’s keep it that way. They better stay out of politics because that is just plain stupid for them. Go Carrie.

Every American has the right to voice their choice for president. No matter if they’re famous or not. If someone is dumb and follows celebs thats “on them” not the celeb. I think Carrie thinks people are not smart enough to listen to a celeb and still make up their own mind. That Jo-Pitt fans will blindly follow Brad and Angie’s choice. Yes there are some people out there who will. But I think most people won’t. Bottom line is… this is AMERICA!!! Just becuz someone is on a tv show. That doesn’t forfeit their right to publicly support a presidential candidate.

I am liking this girl more and more! She’s right!

I completely agree with Carrie!! all celebrities need to keep their mouths shut and any american is dumb if they are influenced by a celebrities vote.

complete agree with her!

She’s right. Celebrities need to shut up.

kim1891uk @ 11/04/2008 at 1:59 pm

so true its not even funny

wow….very very very insightful ms. carrie underwood. not only are you stunningly beautiful, talented but incredibly wise.

i like the fact that celebrities are bringing AWARENESS to voting and encouraging people to vote, but anybody who is INFLUENCED so strongly to vote for a candidate only because their favourite celebrity says so,…is a dingbat and idiot.

Go Carrie!

I agree with her. Finally a mature comment from a public person. Anyway, it’s also true that only people without personality are voting for a candidate only because a “star” saying them to vote.

I feel the same way, I will not pay to support celebrities who use the spotlight to air their political views.

If they want me to pay for there work , they need to stop insulting half of the population each time they speak.

That’s just stupid. If you believe in something you should campaign for it no matter who you are. And celebrities have a lot of power so why not use it for a good cause? Wanna bet she’s a republican?

Obama ‘08

she's ashamed @ 11/04/2008 at 2:07 pm

Sounds like an ashamed Republican to me, and what a judgmental ***** to lose ALL respect for someone just for voicing their opinion or urging millions of complacent Americans to vote?

frida, you dingbat, not she’s not a republican.

You go Carrie! You celebrities are more influential than you think, and those that do listen to celebrities, probably can’t tell me or anyone else who the current President is, what the candidates stand for (as proven by Howard Stern) and can’t tell me what a Bicameral House is. Pick up a book, take a spelling class before you post something on here.

Sandy capella @ 11/04/2008 at 2:09 pm

What a bonehead! You would think she would have learned to keep her mouth shut after what she said re Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo! I doubt that anyone endorsing a candidate cares about getting respect from Carrie Underwood. Personally, I think it’s wonderful to live in a country where you have the privilege of voicing your opinions and endorsements without fear of retribution.

I agree with her! Like my huband says…we just want to see entertainers ‘tap dance’. Do the job you are paid to do!! We don’t care what your political beliefs are we just want you to act, sing or dance. Whatever side you are on, you will lose the respect of many of your fans by voicing your unsolicited opinions. I have no desire to see many actors or singers because they have made an fool of themselves in the political arena.

geez. she is a ******* idiot.
she obviously doesn’t have an opinion on politics…

if you have a mind of your own… your own personality… your own opinions…. your own friggin voice then you wouldn’t be easily persuaded by a public figure such as Oprah… they make their decisions… so should you.

Ha! What’s funny is the comment from someone saying they are now buying her CD b/c they agree with her. Hmmm, but I thought the whole idea was that celebs shouldn’t have an opinion outside their art. I love how she shares this, as if to say WE too shouldn’t have any respect for celebrities that endorse a candidate. She is giving her opinion about celebrities and politics, while saying how she disagrees with other celebrities giving their opinions about politics in the same breath. Ha!

Give me a break, music is a reflection of what is going on in the world around us, look at any era, any generation, any culture. Music tells a story of what is happening at that time, in that place. Of course it can be an escape, painting pictures that have yet to happen or are just dreams for people.

Newsflash: Americans aren’t smart enough to vote for someone who will change the country for better - just look at the fact that George W. Bush has been voted for President for 8 YEARS! Americans have become the laughing stock of the world because of him. Clearly the citizens of the USA need some direction for intelligent, analytical free-thinkers.
