People Magazine: NY Times is Bogus

Larry Hackett, managing editor for People magazine, just sent this email to staffers to address the recent NYTimes piece titled “Angelina Jolie’s Carefully Orchestrated Image”:

“I don’t normally address press stories about how we do our business here at People. But today’s New York Times pg. 1 story about Angelina Jolie requires a response. In the lede, the story strongly suggests that People, while negotiating for the twins pictures, had explicit conversations about our “editorial plan” and made ‘a promise’ that coverage would be positive.

“These sorts of stories have appeared in media gossip columns before. I have ignored them in the past as the unfortunate fallout of competition and sour grapes. But today’s story, in a much different venue, takes these rumors to a new level, so let me be absolutely clear: The suggestion that we have ever made any promise of positive coverage, or have submitted an editorial plan, is completely false. That I or anyone else would promise, on paper or verbally, to purposely slant coverage as condition for acquiring pictures, is insulting to all of us.

“Here’s what is true: Celebrities-and senators and business executives and athletes-are always trying to bend stories their way. We deal with that pressure every single day and engage in many conversations regarding all elements of coverage. Angelina Jolie is very candid about wanting attention for her charitable efforts, and we have covered many of them because we believe they are interesting stories. But in doing so, we have never relinquished editorial control. There have been occasions when her goals and our needs could not be reconciled, and we have walked away, as we have with countless other story subjects.

“In our coverage of both celebrities and everyday people, People certainly often celebrates their accomplishments and milestones. To say that our coverage of Angelina Jolie has not been admiring would be disingenuous. But the suggestion in today’s Times that this ‘positive’ coverage is codified and promised is totally bogus, and needs to be rejected.”

Whiniston and guli thank you both for posting the entire interview with Angie and Clint. Angie is so intelligent and handles herself so well regardless of the circumstances or the interviewer.

You can tell Clint admires her so much. There was one little part in the interview that irritated me a little. But Angie handled it with her usual aplomb. She should never be underestimated.

guli, that behind the scenes video of Changeling was very interesting. Have you seen it yet? If not please do so we can discuss it. There is just so much good news for Brad and Angie. And x is not in the equation in anyway. I know some don’t believe it. And others don’t want to accept it. But the triangle is dead. Forever. Peace

Changeling
***** 5 stars Classic

What will the history books make of Clint Eastwood when he passes? He’s 78 now, and shows no sign of stopping, but is in the final stretch of an extraordinary career, one that, like that of any great artist, has been through periods and changes. He’s moved effortlessly from star to auteur, bouncing from genre to genre, moving fluidly from behind the lens to back in front of it, but always returning to profound themes of justice, empathy, wrath and revenge.

Eastwood is an American through and through, so one might say that his current, mature work bears comparison to that of another American master, the painter Edward Hopper. Like Hopper, Eastwood shows an economy of style, one that borders on pop but stays firmly classic. Think of the final scene of Million Dollar Baby, with Clint in a roadhouse diner. We see him from behind, through the window, eating key lime pie. Like Hopper’s 1942 Nighthawks
— a couple, a bartender, and a mysterious stranger hunched over with his back to us — this simple scene captures everything and nothing in the neon glare of a melancholy moment.

A less famous painting is Hopper’s 1927 Automat, showing a flapper girl in a fur-trimmed coat staring forlornly at a cup of coffee in a deserted late-night café. It would be pretty amazing if this picture hadn’t come up as a reference point during pre-production on Eastwood’s latest, since it was painted a year before this film, which is based on a true story, is set. It perfectly captures the mood and intent of Changeling, a film that invites you to wonder, to imagine, think and identify. At the centre is a brilliant performance by Angelina Jolie, a turn that works because she wants you to invest in it and go through her traumas with her, not simply be shown them. Eastwood sets this intimate performance against a big, bold backdrop that might be his most ambitious yet, tackling his usual themes but throwing in wonderful meditations on the heyday ofHollywood, its peddling of dreams and the ugly, ruthless realities that lay, literally, on its fringes.

Eastwood handles all this like the pro he is, and though there have been complaints about the film’s melodrama and questions raised about its realism (would a single mother live in such a big house?), that’s nit-picking. This is another fabulous drama from a man whose films, in contrast to his peers’, just can’t stop getting better and better.

Verdict
A compelling, adult period thriller, with an Oscar-assured performance from Angelina Jolie.

Thanks, BDJ. That was an excellent story. It’s nice to see the progress that MIR is making with it’s project. Meanwhile the twits from FEMA is still scratching their ass and wondering what NOT to do next.

I agree, I really enjoyed that interview. I always enjoy listening to Angie talk. She is so intelligent. I love how she talked about what they are trying to teach their children and how they comfort each other. Also about not wanting them to be spoiled. Love how Clint talked about the importance of being friends in a relationship. Also what Angie said about her and Brad and how they want the same things from life and the same ideas for family. This is what was missing in their relationships before.
So beautiful. The interviewer did a great job. He gave an interview the way it should be given. It was really good.

BRAD Pitt and Angelina Jolie are just as annoyingly amazing in real life as they al ways say they are. Pitt caught some flak after going on “Oprah” and claiming to be very hands on with his children. But a source at the Ocean Club in the Bahamas, who saw the Brangelina clan on vacation recently, told Page Six, “They were so adorable with their kids.” The hotel guest added, “Brad and An gelina spent a lot of time in their private villa but would take the four kids out of the room to play.” Our spy didn’t see them with their new twins, “but they spent lots of time with the older kids doing arts-and- crafts proj ects and playing on the play ground. It was a great picture.”

Wonder when they were in the Bahamas?

I’m so glad that we don’t have tabloids here that usually run filthy stories about Angelina. But when I browse the internet, there are so many articles attacking her with no basis at all, just to sell their goods. Most of the writeups are really silly. I DON’T believe them.
I’m happy that there are some sensible mags that tell the truth.

OMG….

Okay, call me late as the day is long, but I’m just now reading the Angelina quote I think from nyt (fell in love/mams)– I can’t believe this is the quote that started the whole uproar…is this what she really, actually said (below)?

“They haven’t seen a lot of our films yet, because they are a little young, but I’m looking forward to them one day discovering Mr and Mrs Smith,” she smiled. “They’re going to have a great laugh – to see when their parents actually met, and watch them fall in love and try to kill each other! And Madd was there while we were filming, so he was a part of it. It’s pretty extraordinary.””

She is CLEARLY talking about their characters in the film.

I am just floored that so many people got this wrong. I can understand tabloids taking the bait - but actual legit news regurgitating it?? Even Oprah?

What a shoddy press we have.

Cliniqua,

You know what was funny, the quote was out for a few days and…nada. The uproar only started when Star made it an issue, then the blogs and the hens got on the bandwagon, and the rest, as they say, is history. You know how the hens have to wait for their “talking points” before they can start trolling the sites getting their hate on.

HOTNESS, Brad & Angie speakin’ Italian in the Tango Scene…whoa…didn’t think it was possible for this scene to get any hotter…but Italian will do that. lolol

Those Washington bullets again

Bravo for “Brangelina”: This story is really interesting. We read, “When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt negotiated with People and other celebrity magazines this summer for photos of their newborn twins and an interview, the stars were seeking more than the estimated $14 million they received from the deal. They also wanted a hefty slice of journalistic input — a promise that the winning magazine’s coverage would be positive, not merely in that instance but into the future.”

But is it true? Time Inc. says, “These claims are categorically false. … Like any news organization, People does purchase photos, but the magazine does not determine editorial content based on the demands of outside parties.” The Times added: “The New York Times recently ran a feature article about Ms. Jolie; there were no restrictions on access.”

Way back when, however, according to the article, “People magazine bid successfully for photos and an exclusive interview after she gave birth to her first child in 2006. Those pictures sold for an estimated $4.1 million, a sum that she and Mr. Pitt said they donated to charity.”

But I had some questions, and so I sent this to the Times reporter who wrote the article:

Dear Brooks Barnes:

I planned to write a little something about your Angelina story on Monday and I was hoping to clarify a couple of points.

1) Is there any evidence on either side about the deal with Time? We are left with two competing claims.

2) In the past, “Brangelina” have asked for the $ not for themselves, but for charity. I assumed this was the case this time as well. But I saw no mention of that in the article. Do we know whether this is the case?

Thanks for your time,

ERA

I asked these questions because I have to say, I’m a big fan of these people. I love the way they lay bare the manipulation of the celebrity media and do so in the services of unarguably good causes. I love the way they separate these rich corporations from their money and turn it over to Cambodia orphans. In the past, I’ve seen articles where the Times accuses certain celebrities of demanding money without pointing out that they were doing so for charitable purposes. (This happened, I recall, to Dave Eggers.) It’s an important component of the story here and I hope it wasn’t left ambiguous because nobody thought it important. I’ll let you know what, if anything, I hear in response.

OT

Hey Jared, you met the SEXIEST MAN ALIVE., congrats, man!

How about meeting the SEXIEST DAD ON PLANET EARTH, BRAD PITT?

Can we count on you doing that????

Awww…cute premiere of MAMS video, posted not too long ago on utube, have never seen this version - you really get a feel at just how huge this premiere was in terms of people that crowded the street — and listen to what Doug Liman says about B&A….muahahaha…hope x was tuning in for that.

Oh, and thanks for that letter to Brooks Barnes the hack from mediamatters, it will be interesting to see what happens. I have a feeling, he’ll either tell a bald faced lie, he looks the type — or he’ll back off completely, and claim he was only printing what he heard - which will make him and the times look even WORSE.

Afterall, if he had the proof, why wouldn’t he have put that in the article as indisputable….and hit whatever he’s trying to say out of the park. He’s a hack that’s why - spreading innuendo at the behest of *others* — he’s in someone’s pocket. I hope the Clay Aiken lookalike goes down.

Wow, great posts. Thanks all. I wonder when I can see more pictures of her family again. I miss Shiloh and her siblings. I hate it when I’m bombarded with a post of Suri every single day. The kid is cute, but gosh, everyday, really….???

Len LT @ 11/25/2008 at 1:59 am

+++++++++++++
That is why Suri topped the Forbes kiddy list. Her parents are pimping her everyday (and she doesn’t have a film to promote, lol). Notice in one picture she’s finally wearing a jacket? Congrats Katie for being a good mom. AND THE HATERS ACCUSE THE JOLIE OF USING HER KIDS AND MOM TO PROMOTE HER VIDEO!!! Those pea brains . . .

ooppps, sorry, i mean her film (not video)
I’m thinking of X ( her films went straight to video)

Superbly made and winningly acted by Brad Pitt in his most impressive outing to date, the audience for this Paramount/Warner Bros. co-production is large. Strong boxoffice should ensue.

By Kirk Honeycutt Hollywood reporter

Pitt’s is a performance so good it could go unnoticed: subtle and seamless and gloriously free from any actorly pretention, any obsequiousness. It could easily be underappreciated amid the sure-to-come hyperbole (here, for starters) about the picture’s digitally-aided aging. And ok, the effects are extraordinary - you see Pitt as a pensioner and then as a young buck, as vital and offensively good looking as he was in Thelma & Louise.

by Nev Pierce Empire

This is the third successful teaming of Fincher and Pitt, who starred in the helmer’s best features, “Seven” (1995) and “The Fight Club” (1999). Essaying his most demanding and complex role to date, one that should garner him his first Best Actor Oscar nomination, Brad Pitt begins as a character who may be nave and limited in consciousness, but is generous in feeling and heart, hence facilitating the audience’s identification with him. As the glue that holds the episodic film together, Pitt never allows his persona’s eccentricities to become a comedic or satiric caricature, though a good dosage of humor is interspersed throughout the yarn.

Emmanuel Levy

“The actors are superb, especially Pitt and Cate Blanchett, who should earn Oscar noms.

Anne Thompson Vareity

“Pitt gives his best performance to date, capturing the weariness of old age as convincingly as the vigour of youth”.

Mike Goodridge of Screen Daily

“In all his physical manifestations, Benjamin is a reactor, not a perpetrator, and Pitt inhabits the role genially, gently and sympathetically”

Todd McCarthy of Variety

Hey I’m alone here. No night shift for the trolls.

4 more days befor e the big day. . .
Happy 5th birthday Pax Thien Jolie-PItt!!!

http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm

And that’s the poll results in america. If you think that Asians approve of George W Bush more than American’s do, that’s OK with me.

Alan Greenspan, Scott Mcllelan, Paul O’Neill, they are all protecting their legacy and in a conspiracy to be mean to George.

If you think that Bush had no choice but to keep his tax cuts and keep spending that’s your opinion.

Let’s agree to have different opinions. I’m done with George W Bush.

This is for Guli,

That guy that sold the Brad and Angelina pictures for 500,000 was Darryn Lyons.I too remember watching his show when he said that they followed Brad and just got lucky. The name of the show was Papparazzi or Mr Papparazzi (sp?).
Hope this helps you find what you’re looking for.
