Brad and Angelina in N.O. for Screening

The New Orleans Office of Film and Video said Monday the city is about to wrap up a record year for movie-making, and one of the first films to be shot in the city after Katrina is getting ready to hit the big screen. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button doesn’t hit theaters until Christmas Day, but Monday night, the movie’s producers and stars were in town for a special screening at the Palace 20 in Elmwood. Among that star studded crowd was one of New Orleans’ most famous residents, Brad Pitt.

Pitt and Cate Blanchett star in the movie, an unusual story of a man who was born in his eighties and ages backwards. The story is set in the 1920’s in New Orleans. Much of it was filmed in a New Orleans Garden District mansion, blocks from St. Charles Ave.

Pitt said, “it (New Orleans) made the magic believable.” Angelina Jolie, who was with Pitt for the screening, said “it (Benjamin Button) touches on deep love, but it also touches on death and people who move with us through life.”

Benjamin Button was filmed all across the New Orleans Region, in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Tammany Parishes for nearly 100 days. “That’s basically about three movies worth of shooting days just for one project,” said Jennifer Day, Director of the New Orleans Office of Film and Video. She said film crews even helped in rebuilding efforts while filming. “If they chose a location that they wanted to use for the project and it needed sprucing up or refurbishing, they absolutely did that,” said Day.

Benjamin Button is one of 20 film and tv projects that is setting up New Orleans for a record breaking year. Day said, “those 20 projects equal total budgets of an estimated $275 million.” She said at least half of that is spent locally.

So, why New Orleans? “With the film business, it’s all about money, and they (filmmakers) came here because it’s all about economics and they can mount this here, ” said Pitt. Louisiana’s tax incentives are a huge draw, and Day said add to that the region’s strong local talent base.

Local actress Donna Duplantier said, “I’m actually the mother of the young gentleman in the beginning of the film who passes away during the war.” Local actors and actresses are part of the talent base. Day said the behind the scenes crews, the folks who actual make the movie, have a strong base in the region too.

Pitt said, “I’m telling you, we had some of the best extras we’ve ever had. They were really engaged.”

Some believe Benjamin Button could make New Orleans the setting for even more films. “I think that if this film is successful in winning some awards, and I think that’s going to happen, I think it will open up a Pandora’s box for more movies to come here, and give more local actors a chance at some meaningful roles,” said Lance Nichols, another local actor who has a significant role in the film.

“I think the impact of the industry over the next year, maybe two years is really going to explode,” said Day.

As other parts of the country struggle, New Orleans and Louisiana shine brighter than competing states thanks to tax incentives and local talent.

The New Orleans Office of Film and Video said six viable projects are already on the table for 2009. They also plan to target European feature filmmakers as well as national ad agencies to lure in more national commercials.

Brad’s doing Ellen? Okay…NOW Brad is pimpin’ his flick. You can tell this movie is important if he’s out there doing talk shows he doesn’t normally do. Plus, he may be thanking Ellen for all the support she gave to MIR last year when he started it.

Is Brad going to be at Ellen’s studio or is it coming from NO? I’ll know Brad is pimpin’ his movie if he does Leno or Letterman. Most certainly Letterman because I don’t think Brad has ever done his show.
